OMG for years I've been waiting for someone like YOU to EXPLAIN the prepatory phases of what inversions and postures like these (that have baffled and intimidated the hell out of me for years) and I just nailed this posture! I love you! Heart of gratitude for your presence and the gifts of your ability to articulate poses. Namaste
+Laura Mazucca for some reason, i am just seeing this comment now! youtube doesn't always tell me when people comment. :/ but your message totally made my day. i'm so glad that you got the tools you need to nail the pose! :D thanks for your note!
This was a really excellent video. There are many yoga instructors on YOUTube who are not really teaching anyone anything but just showing off that they know how to do a difficult pose. But you actually break things down step by step and are actually teaching something. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
+TheYogina i really appreciate that, as that is exactly what i find as well! my whole goal is to show how instead of show off...so, thank you and glad it helped. :)
OMG. What a GREAT video on EPK2! Thinking of it as a backbend all makes sense now. My teacher usually has us enter this from lizard pose too, and I always find it hard to externally rotate the front leg from there, never have lift-off, etc etc. I found it weird because EPK1 lift-off is pretty much effortless. Gonna try out what I learnt tomorrow. Thanks Shana!!
Hi Sapna! Yes, I teach online all the time. You can email me through my website, www.yogathletica.com if you are interested in privates. My online students have the same level of breakthroughs as my in-person students! I also have a channel of full-length classes on vimeo ( vimeo.com/ondemand/yogathletica ) if you want something more cost-effective. As of today, I have 102 unique classes there and I add one or two every month. Would love to help you out! :) shana 🙏🙏🙏
THANKS so much Shana, this is the video i've been searching for ages! I've been struggling with this pose for 2 years and still couldn't figure out how to get my back foot off the ground, so I've pretty much given up. Definitely gonna try your suggestions and thanks for making me feel hopeful again!
yay yay yay! i hope the technical details provide the missing link for you. :D let me know if you have any questions and you can always post a video response, too!
shana meyerson Hi Shana, I tried your suggestions but it certainly wasn't as easy as it looked on you...:-( I felt very heavy once I put my leg on my arm, perhaps that's when i lost the connection with my core? (I want to engage my core but i don't know how once i got into that position!) The way I was taught in class was usually entering from lizard pose : wriggle shoulder under the front leg then shift forward into Chaturanga arms, and straighten the front and back legs immediately. Is that suppose to be easier for someone without enough core strength?
either one is a fine entry. i like coming from dog because it is easier to "cheat" the back leg/hip upwards. if your leg feels heavy, it's one of three things (1) you are not melting your chest/backbending, (2) you are dropping your back hip, or (3) your body weight is not shifting forward enough. [or (4) any combination of 1, 2, and 3]. if you want to post a video here, i'm happy to look at it and tell you what's going on. also, videotaping yourself is a great way to literally see what is going on in your body so you can fix it. :)
Thanks again for the tips. Videotaping is a good idea, let me see if I can get someone to help me do this since the only equipment I have is my cell phone... BTW, my teacher taught another way to transit into Koundinyasana today : by hooking one leg up on shoulder, lifting up the other leg (like in Astavakrasana) and shift weight forward, while lifting hip up like crazy, bend the knee of back leg, roll forward and extend it back. Since I can almost do Astavakrasana, so this move seems to make sense for me! Geeze, this pose is fun because it seems to have the element of many other poses.
you can actually also enter directly from astavakrasana! not sure if you've seen that video...? th-cam.com/video/meizGcM4MrE/w-d-xo.html (be sure to watch to the end). there are always a lot of different ways to enter all poses!
Update for my VC (virtual coach). I've now incorporated epk1 & 2 into my practice. When the opportunity presents itself in class, I flow epk's. Thanks again for your beautiful supporting videos. You make my practice. I'll send you pictures if you would like to see your students progress :)
+TheBridgeNuts i would love pics! can you email them to me? i don't get notifications when people email me through google and sometimes it sits there for a year before i remember to check. :) also...will be doing a epk1 to epk2 video soon. :)
Hello Shana how are you? Seeing you after a very long long-time. I have been following you for quite a long time. Right now I am watching a 9 y rs old video of yours EPK 2 asana
Not yet! I'm still working on straightening the leg when I get into the pose! and I had thought about the similarities with chin stand but I thought it was just my imagination and then...your video! Enlightening! Thank you! I wish I lived in L.A. instead of Lafayette, Indiana! :(
i travel! :) be sure to sign up for my mailing list on my site (www.yogathletica.com) and i'll keep you updated where i'm teaching. :) i've taught twice in indiana. :)
I know a well known studio here in Cheltenham where I live but I personally have not been there for a class. In the new year, I will probably try it and then will intro them to you. That'd be so cool. Great week to you!
Owww love it! But I have à question🙋, i support my right leg for example in my right arm and my body will be supported by my left elbow? Or is this also a cheating balance?... Thank you🙏
great question! it is a cheat...but it is a kosher cheat. 😉 try to shift focus on lifting the hip of the back leg (and the leg itself!) to, at least eventually, get off the arm. ❤️
@@YOGAthletica thank you so much for taking the time to answer me❤!! I will try tomorrow morning , but not sure it will happen in at least few attempts... Thank you shana 🌹
hi shana! thank you very much again for a very well explained video! if i go forward and lean forward, wouldn't that damage the shoulder as then the shoulders would be pointing at a downward angle? since its chaturanga arms, i thought its always shoulders parallel to floor. thanks in advance!
+W Tan great question. even though the shoulders are moving forward (and possible angling down) in space, they are still rolling back and down your back to keep them safe. :)
Jake Pham though, i've studied primarily with ashtanga and iyengar teachers, but overall, i make up my own instructions. i tell the thoughts that make sense to me. almost 100% of what i teach is based on my own discovery and creation. :)
+shana meyerson Thank you very much. I'm so happy to be able to lift my back leg for like 2 seconds by following your instructions in this video! I am very grateful that you are sharing these!
great tutorial! I finally realized why I cannot make it, will follow your instructions and practice again and again, until I nail it, thank you so much!

WOW stepping back into chaturanga from the knee on the tricep and pushing back up into plank is so super difficult
it is a big challenge, but a great shoulder and core strengthener!

glovenny weird, right? :)
you are such a dedicated yogini! you rock!

+shana meyerson Is your practice of yoga Iyengar based? You have a good explanation of alignment.
Jake Pham though, i've studied primarily with ashtanga and iyengar teachers, but overall, i make up my own instructions. i tell the thoughts that make sense to me. almost 100% of what i teach is based on my own discovery and creation. :)
