    I can't "start slow" from home -- immediate steep uphill / turbo whizzing. I like to give it 1-1.5 minutes in winter, then go.

      +Gary Allman Definitely, not everyone will have the ideal situation to start with. Hills are tough, so doing what you are doing will help - are you running synthetic oil as well?

      @@YourHomeGarage I did say "turbo" so yes I am running synthetic oil.

      Yes unfortunately, about a quarter mile into my commute I need to accelerate to 70 mph up a hill with a small engine. It can be tough if there's traffic. I let my car warm up 2-3 minutes beforehand in winter. Luckily it doesn't get too cold where I live most of the time.

    I warmed my Toyota up in winter for 22 years engine and transmission fluid I have Pennzoil oil in both plus motor kote in there the car is 29 years old and has 1,000,048 miles and still rolling every day. I'm not sitting in a cold car.

      Your car will warm up quickly if it is working. You won't be in a cold car all that long. My dad would be be 108 if he were alive today and he Hated wussie people and I do as well.

    This implies to engine wear and fuel efficiency but not for the trasmission lifespam. You cannot forget about the trasmission OEM oil temp conditions.

    • @YourHomeGarage
      @YourHomeGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s definitely not a once size fits all situation, as you clearly live very close to the highway. At 1:19 I recommended 5 to 15 minutes of taking it easy with temperatures of -40 Celsius when this video was made. At the end of the day, the vehicle operates better at normal running temperature - so that maybe different for every vehicle.

    Very helpful !!!! Thank you very much. I have a quick question though, what if I have to go up to a 5 meter slopes ( not very steep hill) to get out of my apartment area in North Dakota (temp can get below zero) . Should I let the engine run a little longer, would that help? Thank you for any suggestion.

    • @YourHomeGarage
      @YourHomeGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A five meter slope really isn’t placing an abundance of load or stress on the drive train. Of course engines run better at normal operating temperature, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start driving well before that is reached. As long as you give your oil time to circulate and coat all the working parts (less than a minute), and you’re not redlining the engine before it fully warms up - you’ll be fine. Even if it’s cold outside. Hope that explanation helps.

    1:19 I don't agree with you,sorry. As a mechanic I suggest to all to warm up your engines and let in run at least 5 minutes before you will drive in cold temperature. (-5 C and so on )

    This is soooo stupid. Idling a car sure isn't great for a car but cars idle at red lights etc. Over the long haul it doesn't have a major impact when idling a car.

    • @froggy0162

      when your car is ideling it takes it much longer to warm up then if it is working. While it is ideling cold it is producing a lot more water then if it were warm that water causes sludge in yout engine. Google cylinder wash explained.

    I knew a man that as soon as the engine started it was in gear and going winter,summer didn't matter never had a rebuild had over 200k on the clock! Also known people with complete opposite starting and letting run for five to ten minutes in the winter and summer and had to have their engine rebuilt before 100k! It's all in the luck of the draw!

      Not all engines are made equal but all engines do in fact need an oil change every 3,000 to 6,000 miles in most conditions. If you drive electric then good, but gas engines tend to need to warm up whether in hot climate or cold just that the colder the temp the longer you should let it warmup. If you do oil changes regularly as noted in your manual or every other 3,000 miles depending on your preferences to give you a piece of mind you'll likely be ok with a 1 minute warm up. Most drivers like me tend to get the snow off the car, look in the mirror, make a quick text before heading out and that takes me like 1 minute and then I'm off. Most times I'll take 2 minutes to drink my coffee etc and I'm off and the engine is likely already warmed up so it's all about what you're doing ɓefore heading out as that's really all you need. For extreme cold temps like -20 which we barely get in Indiana I just let it warm up about 3 minutes max. I drive a ford mustang 1999 with 129,000 miles and I've done radiator change, new battery, new tires, oil changes every 3,500 miles, and basically put gas on it regularly no matter what my car has basically been treated like a girlfriend at this point. Lol 😂😂😂😂

    When it's really cold transmission needs to warm up to shift right otherwise they don't shift. Y'all don't know anything about cold climates. Y'all think you but y'all really don't know a damn thing.

    • @Dr.Ticklebum69
      @Dr.Ticklebum69 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Lived in a cold climate my entire life. I can comfortably tell you that no, the trans is not warmed up one bit by idling. You can idle there all day and it will stay cold. If it won't shift at all in the cold then you have other problems.

      That's because that's not what that light is for. It just means your coolant is not at temp and you won't have full heat and shouldn't beat on the motor. Drive like a normal human and it'll be fine.
