i have to giveit to the ps1 version. ess slow down. better transparency effects. ut the saturn port still looks great in some areas and it has some cut scene that the ps1 doesn't have.
One thing to keep in mind: The original arcade version was running on the Taito’s FX-1 System, which is a PlayStation-based board. So the people trying to claim the Saturn version is somehow more arcade accurate need to take a step back.
I think Soukyugurentai is the only STV TItan (saturn arcade board) game ported to PS1. Would be interesting to see that side by side. Kind of the opposite of this.
It should be mentioned that this game was designed for the PlayStation hardware. The original arcade version runs on the Taito FX-1B arcade board, which is basically a modified, slightly faster PlayStation. Much in common with Namco's System 11. With that said, although it's a bit rough, the Saturn version was a good effort despite the lack of translucency and slowdowns. But the PS version is definitely more polished, and rightfully so. Would have loved if Radiant Silvergun had a port to the PlayStation as that game was designed from the ground up for the Saturn/ST-V Titan arcade board. So, it makes heavy use of VDP2. Would be cool to see how the devs would have worked around it as those infinite planes would hit the PlayStation's GTE pretty hard. Love this era of hardware as consoles back in these days always provided something unique, which gave them character.
Hmmm...now this is an interesting comparison. On the one hand, the Saturn version has a brighter color palette and cool cutscenes that are absent from the PSOne version but on the other, the PSOne version has better transparency usages and less slowdown than the Saturn overall. Still, a great game is a great game and you can't go wrong with this one no matter what platform you play it on. Shame the Saturn version never made it overseas though.
I read in a magazine an interview with the development staff that Layer Section 2 challenged the limits of the Saturn. If VDP1 has room, it will be 60FPS, otherwise it will be variable to 30FPS. Polygons are also halved depending on the model. When I acquired this software, which has little distribution, I was fairly impressed.
Although the color palette is brighter and more vibrant on the Saturn, many textures look pixelated or downgraded in comparison to the PS1. Also, the true transparency and 3D effects on PS1 give it a cutting edge. Is the frame rate a bit superior also in the PS1? It’s hard to say. The rest seems fairly comparable. The control pad choice is debatable. I have to say that the PS DualShock is still around after more than 25 years, and that means something
I understand why they cut the opening cinematic out of the PS version, since it says "Layer section II" in the movie, but why would they remove the others?
PS1 wins but it isn’t perfect. More texture warping but it’s for sure smoother and faster than the Saturn version. And of course, Saturn can only really handle transparencies and stuff to a limited degree and only when using VDP 2 which was likely already used for the ground.
Lots of slowdown on the SEGA Saturn 🪐. The PlayStation seems to have a much easier time processing the game without much issue. Plus, the Saturn version has a top framrate of 60fps, but drops heavily as more things enter the screen. The PSX is 60fps most of not all the time (with transparency effects no less).
1. The Saturn controller is made for a game like this. Seems better at movement than the Playstation's segmented d-pad. 2. On the Saturn version the Options menu looks a little more appealing than the small text box on the Playstation. 3. The Playstation does scroll smoother while the Saturn version gets bogged down when a lot of crap is on screen trying to kill you. 4. Differences in boss fights. The second level boss fight on the Saturn stays over the water. While the Playstation version moves the battle over a city scape. 5. Raystorm is a much better name than Layer Selection II. Because you layer your ships or have twice the layers or something.
The Sega Saturn version seems to have a better color palette, I notice some different geometry going on in some of the stage, probably some polygon cut-downs. especially here: 12:15 The PS1 version runs at a better frame rate & doesn't suffer slowdowns, has cleaner visual/particle effects, & better textures.
The game was originally developed for PS1 in mind so that's where it plays the best. I still prefer Layer Section on Saturn over any version of RayStorm though.

Compared to the PlayStation version (the original version), the Saturn version had a slower game speed, but this helped ease the difficulty level, which was too difficult. Also, the Saturn version had music in CDDA format, so I could listen to music on my CD player.
Saturn was a beast of a system when it came to many things, but the poor thing struggled so hard with transparencies. On the basis of PS1 being so much better at that and it featuring so prominently in this game, gotta give the PS1 an easy win here.
the Saturn version is definitely a complete version of the game, meanwhile PS1 was straight arcade port without the videos in it. but graphic wise, PS1 win, Saturn had some framerate slow down and also cannot do the transparent is the peak of it.
Well, Saturn wasn't what it was cracked up to be after all, it had what it needed, unfortunately the developers didn't release their games on Saturn as well. The only thing I never understood about Sega was the way they did color blending with checkerboard. Dreamcast was their only console that handled color impeccably. But Saturn I could do much more.
Didn't help that Sega wasn't forthcoming with the documentation, and pulling stunts like "We're launching the console early, so we're gonna need those games quickly!"
- Boss, code is ready - Perfect. Now change some colors and gui text position. Or instead of using the original code that you already have, rewrite and replicate everything by eye. I have the Saturn version and absolutely love it. On a CRT of course, where you don’t see mesh transparencies. It’s a really hard game to beat though. Imagine how bad an N64 port would have looked. 🤮
actually nope. at all, since saturn texture are mostly made up of square texture it's worst when the texture are shown slanted (you can see that on the first stage boss floors), so it looks like the worst aliasing compare to PS1, PS1 wobbly texture is already a given thing but it's totally much stable than Saturn did in this game.
@Trako26 The phenomenon known as Texture Warping is most commonly seen in 5th generation Playstation games, specifically the polygonal ones. Most of the Playstation's library was comprised of games that used polygons, so it's almost unavoidable. On the other hand, the Saturn generally has issues with displaying "true" transparencies on one of its main graphical processors (the VDP1). The "fake" transparency effect is called dithering. "True" transparencies *can* be found on the Saturn though. It's often dependent on the developer's level of proficiency with utilizing the hardware and/or tools that they had access to.
Counting emulation, Saturn for sure since you can fix the only issues it has, decrease load times. For original hardware, would still pick Saturn due to the bonus content. But if I was stuck with the PSX version, it would not be a problem.
Ok! I prefer the Saturn Version. For starters, both systems were never meant to be played in anything higher than 480i. Having said that I am one of the few who prefers to play Saturn with upscaled AV cables coupled with the Mclassic. Using this combination gives the best of both worlds, more vibrant colors, and the CRT look for dithering as it was meant to appear back in the 90s. While not true transparencies, it is difficult to tell them apart, when the Saturn is played this way. Arguably games look for less pixilated as well. Additionally, if you bother to pause the video and do an actual side by side, you will see that the Saturn version has more geometry in areas. Finally, while the texture work appears to be smoother on the PS1, It really boils down to how the games are being played. As the Saturn version is equally detailed.
The game has been created targeting PSX arcade board, of course PSX version got the best performance. Also, as shown by SS Castelvania SOTN conversion, the programming team capacities behind every conversion is a crucial choice too...
@@SomeOrangeCatFact is, noone knows if its really SS fault (as you clearly imply) or not, almost noone has really pushed that hw in the past. Right. The PS1 version is closer to the arcade, due to the similar hardware, but *somehow* the Sega fanboys are claiming that Saturn version is just "better!"

Sega killed there company by bad decisions. If they supported Saturn and launch next console after a much longer time. People wouldn’t have abandoned them fearing bad support especially with things like 32x support etc
The frame rate of the Saturn version is quite bad, but it was ported by Tose! Taito would definitely have done a better job.
Take the hardware into consideration to. Look at the Taito’s FX-1's specs and then the Playstation's.
Nesse jogo um empate e justo
a versão do Saturn fico caprichada
Obviamente no va a estar perfecto y va a tener carencias. Proba Soukyugurentai y volvemos a hablar
I don't think VCDecide has done a Souky comparison. That game is based on Titan arcade hardware. I've compared both versions on my setup... and yeah 👀
Sega Saturn
Don't try to talk rationally with Sega fanboys. They always have a double standard.
Right. The PS1 version is closer to the arcade, due to the similar hardware, but *somehow* the Sega fanboys are claiming that Saturn version is just "better!"
Because it has less polygons
wonder if the Sega Saturn version of Layer Section II had used the 1MB RAM expansion if it would have helped it look better
top
They're both equal except that the Sega Saturn version makes more sense.
How does it "make more sense?"
Sega Saturn wins!!
I suspect the Saturn team didn't have as much time to port the game because the Saturn version should easily be superior to the PlayStation version!
The arcade version is running on a PS1-based board. The Saturn version never had any chance of measuring up.
@@SomeOrangeCat Not really, arguably the Saturn's arcade board, Titan is better! The Saturn is also great at doing 2.5D so I don't see why the port could not be better but it probably would have taken a skilled team to pull it off!
@@entertainmentwizard2703 No, I'm telling you that the base game is running on the Taito’s FX-1. Its a PlayStation hardware derivative. It's literally a PlayStation game to begin with.
The Playstation had a few Titan arcade hardware conversions done on it. And those were *inferior* by comparison, but that's just how the cookie crumbles sometimes.
Star Fox 64 vence fácil
Not different
Welp, this is where 3d focused console development paid off, ps wins this one 🤔.
Erm....why's Playstation asking for...coins?
This was originally an arcade game
Una vez más gana SSEEEGAAA!! ;)
Sony PlayStation wins!
Jejejejejeje…No.
Not with that dpad
Playstation definitely had better graphics but it was missing a few things that the sega version had
Insert coins
Are you delusional or what?
Sega Saturn wins !!! 😎👌
Sega being the king of the arcade and came with this mess up hardware.
Playstation
A versão de Saturn é podre demais kkkkkkkkkkk 🤣
Sega saturno ê bem melhor !
Saturn wins
PlayStation wins ! Flawless victory ! Fatality ! 👍👍👍
challenged the limit ! saturn!
Saturn version is better, he got a higher score
Easy PS1 victory. Saturn can't do any of the nice transparency or lighting effects. They're some ugly dithered mess.
The dithering are so ugly… I hate when programmers don’t try to use the transparency that the Saturn can provide. I know that most of the time it was a lack of time and also it uses the cpu to display those real transparencies ( like burning rangers).
They were trying to port a PlayStation-native game to the Saturn. Its a miracle it runs as good as it does.
@@SomeOrangeCat i know it. The Saturn has more raw power than the ps1, despite what Sony fans think. We all know how hard it is to create amazing graphics on the 32 bit but with some dedication and a lot of time anything that was available on the ps1 would also be possible on the Saturn. I hope that one day we will get our hands on the Shenmue prototype and it will definitely show the superiority of the sega’s console
@@sega-re-trop-vieux All that power the Saturn had didn't mean squat, because Sega made no effort to teach third parties how to best utilize it. Its why so few games took advantage of all it had to offer. Meanwhile Sony had a simpler, easier to grasp, system design, and actually taught the third parties how to use it.
@@sega-re-trop-vieux Saturn's transparency is the most half-arsed thing ever. It's slow and broken to the point it's useless. This game is detailed and fast, uses dithering and still has some slowdown. They likely could not afford to sacrifice performance to implement a better effect.
@@bizarroeddie1 the slowdowns are the struggle to use efficiently both vdp. No cap, only Sega and lobotomy were able to make amazing 3d graphics without killing the framerate ( virtual fighter 2, Duke Nukem).
Saturn Lose!
