Gotta disagree with that one. Was by a mile the most interesting / complex character in the dreadful Gordon family - slowly revealing the monster he was. Basically all the main Gordon family were unbearablly awful... Top 5 worst Gordon family members: 5 - Alli Gordon - a smidge of personality and somewhat likeable, could definitely have done more with him. 4 - Baldie Gordon kid - occasional wise crack but 0 personality 3 - Ruth Gordon - completely dense, a terrible decision maker, not very self-aware and generally annoying 2 - Kirsty Gordon - -100 personality, boring, generic Joint 1st: Alan and Debbie - where to start? The fact they have 0 chemistry with eachother or the never-ending smoking storyline, or the fact the whole family have different accents... they could've killed the lot off in the Siege II which would've been the least the viewers deserved!
I can reveal some behind the scenes info about the Gordon's. I know someone who worked on Brookside. The guy who played the Gordon father Alan was sacked suddenly - which is why on-sceen all you see is Debbie asking him to move her car at the garage, but he wasn't seen moving it onscreen because the actor had already gone! The next episode, it's established he's disappeared and he never appears again, but the character wasn't intended to be a victim of the seige/helicopter disaster. Even the later explanation that Terry somehow managed to shoot down a police helicopter, then kidnap Alan, make him drive to a quarry and then kill him, didn't really fit because we didn't see it, or have any idea whatsoever that it was happening offscreen. The writers basically made his exit fit with the whole seige storyline. It was so contrived because it wasn't meant to be part of the plot. He was sacked over an incident with a co-worker. They were going to recast - which is why the character wasn't simply killed-off like invisible Diane Murray apparently was by the falling helicopter, but by that point, Brookside had been moved to the weekend omnibus only, so the writers decided to kill him off. Next, the actress that played the mother quit after her 12 month contract ended (actors on Brookside by this point were employed on an 'as-and-when' basis, and some couldn't be arsed with this arrangement, and asked to be written out, but most just disappeared!), and so they killed her off as well. This meant they were left with all these miserable Gordon kids, and some mileage was made out of this situation by having a family of orphaned teenagers. In fact, Phil Redmond felt the "killing off the parents" story arc worked so well on Brookside, a couple of years later, he decided to kill off both of the Cunningham parents in Hollyoaks as well. Phil Redmond did seem to like killing off young children and/or their parents in his soaps.
Who would think that they would bring it back in the future? Amazing!
