Absolutely spectacular playing!!! Staryk is one of the top violinists I have heard in my lifetime (and I have heard some damn good ones), light-years above most of today's renowned soloists in tone production and sheer musical brilliance. His command of stage and concert hall is one of true gravitas, reminding strongly of David Oistrakh in his heyday, with a tinge more fire. Stunning, and humbling. Honoured to live in the same city.
One of the greatest violinists of all time. Young virtuosos today probably sigh in relief that Mr Staryk isn’t out there competing against them, otherwise they’d be considering a career change. Steven Staryk, like Oscar Shumsky and Aaron Rosand, is a prime example that the most famous violinists aren’t always the best or greatest.
great fiddling! i like how he comes out like he owns the place, commanding stage presence. and how refreshing to hear it with the cuts, not the annoying repeated measures. for some reason, i know him mainly from his recording of well known etudes, like Kruetzer, Dont, Rode. the only great fiddler who recorded all those pedagogical exercises.
Wonderful tone: just as when he was leader of the Royal Phil. (If you get a chance to hear Beecham's recording of Rimsky's Sherezade with Steven Staryk playing the solos, take the opportunity!). His left hand is so relaxed ... very like David Oistrahk (and, like him, frequently lifting his little finger at moments of emotion) and probably the only person whose clarity of sound and power was like Oistrahk's. Thanks for uploading such a great performance.
Agreed it's a fantastic bit of fiddling, however the tempo is over the top and is a race to the finish with the orchestra. He is faster than Heifetz who has the advantage of clarity.
Bravo ! Bravo ! Steven Staryk was A FAR better violinist than Sydney Harth, who was a big bully in the universe, especially when he taught. Sydney was so frequently out of tune it was disgusting. He has one speed of vibrato, equivalent to what one might find in a personal vibrator, very very fast and narrow. Yet Staryk has color and authenticity. I wish I had studied with Staryk when I was in Seattle. it would have been ideal. His tempi are a match for Heifetz, yet it's his own interpretation. Performing is not necessarily an interpretation....

This gentleman plays the violin quite well, doesn't he?

It has been too technical and virtuoso for me. Handsome, but not passionate. Sometimes not strictly touted.
It's joyous. I'd be curious to hear the 1st and 2nd movements where the passionate romantic heart is more evident.
