Linklight returns to the workshop for Rivals of Aether which gives you access to custom new characters or mods! In this video I check out Soldier from Team Fortress 2 a classic game by Valve. This guy can rocket jump, rocket spam, steal your girl and hit crazy combos. It really felt like I was playing TF2 in 2D!

theres quite a few comments about how i got some references wrong. these videos are just a first impression of the character. sometimes i do research beforehand but at the time of making this video i did not have much tf2 knowledge. i just started playing the game and wanted to make a video on a character from a game i had an interest in. i did take the feedback seriously tho, for the other tf2 characters i made videos on i asked some friends for help before hand. i really enjoy the element of surprise when trying a character for the first time so it felt more like work and less like fun when i did that, but hopefully the other videos are more enjoyable because of it. writing these triggered comments feels like a pretty easy way to discourage someone from entering the tf2 community by shaming them over their lack of knowledge on a character. but i know the most salty ppl are the reddit losers anyways so stay triggered LMAO

My head, I don't know how people make these mistakes but it just irritates me so much. Make sure you read plenty of books and get those comprehension skills people! 😩
Edit: Watching more of the video has made me realize this dude has barely played any TF2 if at all and I don't know what irritates me more- The lack of comrpehension skills, or the lack of game knowledge leading to completely wrong comments or ideas about this character's moves.

a market garden hit is already really difficult and he got it on accident
I’m no soldier main but yeah slightly disappointed, BUT that sprite is like 14 points of actual color so can’t blame him
I'm so disappointed that the market gardener was not implemented as a secret spike attack if you perform it while in a rocket jump.

10:56 that is not a random crit, when you are rocket jumping and you hit your opponent with a shovel, you get a crit, referencing the market gardener
"he doesn't take damage on rocket jumping" and "i don't see healing" is funny i guess that he was so exited he couldn't read
1:45 did you just not pay attention to the last few seconds? It clearly did 4% per rocket and you're wearing the gunboats, notable by the fire effects on the feet exclusive to that item. They're also notable for reducing damage from blast jumping. Mantreads are the stomp given they literally allow such a thing in game. The slide is probably a reference to an animation. This has been another segment of me knowing way too much about something, kinda surprised i know this much about tf2 for having joined this year and having spent no money.
It's becoming a habit to watch a video and point out a lot of the references that I'm finding that he straight up missed.
Man, that guy doesn't do any research on any character he reviews. Props to him for doing an actual first look, but damn are his videos hard to watch.
Bro this isnt even about knowledge, he is just straight up fucking blind. He tried rocket jumping 4 times when he had 0% damage before that, and after the jumps he had 16% damage

2:19 he slams his grenade into the opponent, and at 7:04 its the "COME HERE CUPCAKE" equalizer tauntkill where he blows himself (and his opponents) up with a grenade
also at 6:08 i believe the red with brown helmet skin is a reference to his colouration in the comics? or maybe just toon shading in general
also at 7:20 its not a medkit but rather a power canteen from the MvM mode

If u think about it, the neutral air cud actually the a market gardener ref cuz at 9:07 when he hits the cube with the shovel, it does a crit, which is what the market gardener does in the original game, being doing cries if u hit someone with it in the air

The shielding animation uses a man vs machine upgrade canteen that is used in the pve game mide in tf2
The back air is probably a referance to the kamakazi taunt kill where soldier uses a grenade to uppercut someone but this time he smacks the licving crap out of every single one

The downtilt can be an interpretation of how soldier uses the Manntreads. It's not a horizontal slide in game but he 100% kicks with both feet like that when you goomba stomp.

fun fact about soldier in tf2: the reason the rocket jumper weapon doesnt hurt him when he rocket jumps because he doesnt believe it will since he named it rocket jumper, theres nothing special about the launcher, he just doesnt believe itll hurt

By the way, that crit you got wasn’t a random crit, it was a Market Gardener crit. Soldier’s neutral aerial crits if you rocket jump before it.

It does around 4% damage as it seems. Not a lot but that can definitely take you out if your not careful.
Also, I think the equalizer moves should be faster at higher damage percentages.
