NHL 2K5 is the BEST hockey game ever. Just the intimidator/intimidated player system was revolutionary and has YET to be brought back to any hockey game. Hit a guy enough and you scare him when ur near him and his stats go down?!?! Priceless
People sleep on NHL 2K8 but it's one of the best hockey games on the PS3/360 generation. The goalie animation is top tier.
NHL 96, NHL 94, NHL Hitz 2002, NHL 2004 and NHL 14. I was thrilled to have NHL 94 Rewind. I'd love to see NHL Hitz come back......

Loved Nhl 94 as my introduction but 95 was a total rebuild and my all time fave 2D experience. Nhl 09 was another touchstone for me as I got to play just as the goalie which was awesome. Sad to see the game leave the PC and even tho I kept buying them the feature list dwindled and no goalie mode was ever made for it. Would always see PC's on sale at Radio Shack which was demo' ing the game every year.

I'd say the list is 10/10, but the 2K series continued after 2K5 up til 2K11 (a wii exclusive). Although I wonder if NHL 14 would've deserved an honorable mention?
I know it continued. I didn't say 2k5 was the last one, I just said the company ended the series. As far as NHL 14 goes. It came close to making the list, but just missed out

14 is good but overrated cause of how terrible NHL 13 was, still a solid game but not as good as 09-12
4:35 I just noticed something. This was the first year they had the skill stick so it wasn't perfected yet, but in my opinion back in 2007, they made the players stances look way more authentic. 4:45 is a real stance players take in shootouts, in nhl 19 players do usually turn their feet inwards like that. 4:55 , the good old backhand shot to the short side, that move is too hard to do in nhl 19 and in order to do it you have to use LT which is a cool feature, even though LT is an unrealistic skating style. 4:58 this one is cool though, I wish they designed their new skating physics based off of this idea. The way Torres has his body hunched over and is angling his skates, is how real players look. I find in NHL 19, players don't bend their knees or backs that much, and they just coast with still upperbody motion, and pivoting is very glitchy because you can spam LT and its like your player is being pulled by a magnet.
NHL hitz is the most fun for me.
Hitz '03 is still one of my all time favorite games as a kid. Definitely one of Midway's golden gems and one I like to go back to every so often. Nothing like it since.
Nhl 11 is the one I keep playing over and over again.

In my opinion, NHL HITZ 2002, NHL HITZ 2003, NHL HITZ PRO (AKA NHL HITZ 2004), NHL 2004, ESPN NHL 2K5, NHL 06, NHL 07, NHL 08, NHL 09, NHL 10, NHL 2K10, NHL 11, NHL 12, NHL 14, NHL ROCK THE RINK and NHL 2 On 2 Open Ice Challenge are my personal favorite hockey video games to play! Also, I just realized that NHL ROCK THE RINK and the NHL HITZ games are Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey/3D Hockey 98' but gotten a huge upgrade with a whole lot of fun, modes, features, better broadcast commentary, replay value (AKA REPLAYABILITY) and for the 5th and 6th generation video game console owners! But I would have to say that NHL 14 or NHL HITZ PRO is the GREATEST HOCKEY VIDEO GAME OF TIME IMO!
2002 HAD THE BEST GAMEPLAY, THE BEST MUSIC, AND FUNNY COMMENTARY.

Sega Sports in 2004 is the best year that published NFL 2K5,NHL 2K5,NBA 2K5,and College Hoops 2K5.
But MLB 2K5 was published by 2K Sports under Take 2 Interactive.

NHL 2002 will always be my favorite, the arcadey hits and shots and the card system, music and hilarious commentary have a plac ein my herat still to today. Ive tried to get into NHL games since, but none has captavated me anything close to 2002

I missed a few of these along the years including the #1. I was too busy falling in love with the 2k franchise after the disaster of NHL 2003 from EA. 2k3 got me hooked and 2k4 and 2k5 were two of the best hockey sims ever in my book. Pure fun factor i'd have put Blades of Steel at #10 probably. NHL 09 was also pretty dang good and would be in my top 5.
I really loved the faceoff series. Also for arcade action was open ice. . all time favorite was probably espn tho.. that trophy room was a dope idea. Man I wish 2k would dip back into hockey
NHL 98 holds the crown as far as I'm concerned, Everything got complicated after that. Blades of Steel comes in second, Third place goes to 99 , I think the mid 90's were the high point of sports games especially arcade. NBA Jams NFL Blitz . Great intuitive gameplay, no junk, just good gaming. Seems to me like most new sports games consist of a bunch of menus options and modes, which just end up complicating the game.
That opening video to nhl98 always gets me pumped up . Got a problem with authority .. are you afraid of the masked man?!

NHL Hitz 20-02 and ESPN NHL 2K5 took the cake for me. SEGA/2K and Midway were my main companies for sports games.

95 for PC is my favorite old game right next to 94 for Sega Cd or Genesis. NHL Legacy Edition is the best new game imo

Due to myself becoming Disillusioned with 2019 Madden/NHL19 I went to used game store to buy a 'PS3 ~TO~ PC controller converter
because I ordered a bunch of NHL & Madden games for PC..
ESP NHL 2004 thanks to Tapatalk mods..
and came home with a PS2,Official white controller & 12 games..
~All the Madden & NHL games I bought we're $0.95 cents & buy 1 get 2 free..
So I spent like $8 bucks on MaddeN 2003-2008
AND NHL 2001-2007..
(also got NFL2K5 & DarkCloud& MGS 2+3)

I already played NHL 2001 +2002 AND got bored in dynasty
and went to 2003..

I remembered how NHL 2004 is why I started all this and put it in & instantly disliked the cnew controls..
Moving Speed burst to the L1/Left Trigger instead of Circle was awful..
SSo I realized how much fn I was having with 2003 and put it back in and im now almost 1/2 way through 1st season.
my record so far is = 16-29 BUT I switched from medium to the next hardest & highest difficulty setting "HAR" and
star players score almost every time they shoot a wide open wrister..
And players like Lecavier & Yashin & Huselius shoot the wrist shot SOOO FAST I CAN BARELY SEE IT...
Im excited to get to NHL 2006(one w/ Lecavier on cover) because my 90's hockey bestBros swear by it and so does online list makers.
And then more modern = looking forward to NHL14(Brodeur on cover) as same bros swear by this year also..
Haven't decided what system to go for PS3/XBOX360 as I still own both and hooked em both up in my mancave next to PS4 & XB.
(PS4 im still playing Diablo3 & Xbox1 still playing DOOM & was playing NHL 19 since I got it free via xboxLive.)

Cool post. Hockey games are so fun. I have NHL 2003 and NHL 2005 for PS2 and i had NHL '99 for pc. I loved both NHL 2003 and NHL 2005. 2003 is still kind of cartooney and too easy to score but when i bought 2005, i saw a huge jump in realism and features. It was quite significant at the time in 2005 when i bought it.

i likede 95 in spite of the bugs...you couldnt deak very well in 96 and it had a cheap blue line shot on the sides of the ice...it would slip right by the corner of the net with the best golies against the worst shooters...96 also had a programmed center zone trap that new jersey used to win that year...the playing style was actually banned....the players all circled and caused the other team to play into your hands

A really cool feature in NHL2003 is you can check after the whistle & each hit extends the moment for a extra second or 2..

Good list! I remember when NHL 99 came out. I bought it on N64 and played the hell out of that game. I still play it from time to time. NHL 94 is awesome too and I still play that on emulator so I can play different years and with updated teams. I was glad to see NHL Hitz 2002 on here. I LOVE that game. I remember buying it when it first came out and loving how different it was from NHL 2002 which was also a great game. I was surprised that NHL 14 wasn't on your list but I understand that not every game can be on here. I did not enjoy Wayne Gretzky's Hockey on N64 as much. My list would be as follows:
