NHL 94 was by far my favorite hockey game during the 16bit era. I had NHLPA 93 for the Sega Genesis and NHL 94 for SNES. From 95 and up, the game was just too fast. I remember we used to rent videogames at the video store every week or two. That was good old days. From NHL '97, I move to the PC version which was the first 3D polygon hockey game that I like. Nice video as always!

"You can comfortably do hockey things"
As someone who cannot for the life of me understand hockey, that is probably the best way to describe any of these games.

    • @rars0n
      @rars0n 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

That's not true, because in some of these games, you cannot _comfortably_ do hockey things. In a few of them you can only vaguely do hockey things.

5:57 NHL Stanley Cup had a goal glitch: take your player and go towards the goalie straight on from the center. right before the blue line, dump the puck towards the net and the goalie will come out of his crease and the puck will sail over him and light the lamp.

And because of that cheat my friends and I agreed to never use the "dump" move. There's a similar cheat in NHL 9x series that we banned. Skate the puck in to the corner, circle around toward the net and skate through the crease. The goalie freezes for a moment and then heads to the far post as you cross the crease. Pull the puck back and jam it in on the short side.

In Brett Hull hockey, if you max out the score 99-99 then you can soft lock the game. The score can't roll over and the game can't end in a tie, so the game can't end. I'm reaching back into childhood memories for this little factoid, so, confirmation required.

NHL Stanley Cup was my favorite. Though if you play it on the highest difficulty, with penalties, you'll either be on the power play all the time, OR get so aggravated with the characters checking you that it will play on a super fast 3 on 3 no holds barred mode where anything goes, since the box is full.

When I play NHL 94 with penalties on I always wind up on the PK all game. Which I like as it makes it really easy to dump and chase from your own end and get a lot of short handed goals without icing. Or I just take control of the goalie and ram an opponent, it often results in an interference call on them.

I agree about NHL '96. I think it's my favorite. It has just the right amount of gameplay quickness and smooth controls. '95 is a close second. '93 and '94 feel clunky and lethargic after playing later ones, along with less controls. In '97 and '98 they started going overboard with how fast they are. Not that I mind fast gameplay, but it's just way too easy to avoid opponents in these ones, even against a 2nd player. Plus in '97 you can score almost everytime by passing the puck at the opposing goalie, which can be stopped by switching to manual goalie, but not by the computer opponent. The people who always include '94 on lists of greatest sports games remind me of people who list Tecmo Bowl, as if Tecmo Super Bowl doesn't. Basically people who are barely familiar with these games/systems, don't have actual opinions of their own, and are stealing from other people's half-assed lists.

If your goalie made a save you could walk him out to the blue line and he was basically invincible, then make a slap shot all the way across across the ice, and the other goalie would only stop it maybe 50% of the time. While NHL '98 was fine to own, as a hockey fan I can't help but prefer NHL '94 for several reasons... namely the original NHL game engine/graphics, & most importantly for me, the Gretzky-Lemieux-Roy era in its prime with the advent of Euros Bure-Mogilny-Selanne instead of the late 90's dead puck era.
'94 wasn't just peak NHL series, it was arguably one of the NHL's all time peak seasons.

NHL 94 is really the only EA iteration worth playing. There's a reason an online league exists only for this version. If you understand anything about the game or play it yourself, you'll know that the AI took a nosedive in the later games. The Holy Grail of hockey plays, the one-timer, was perfected in NHL 94. Your wingers and even defenseman will be in the best possible positions to nail the shot in. They'll set up on rushes, powerplay time in the offensive zone, and best of all, in shorthanded situations.
The Sega Genesis version of the game made slapshots the go-to play, so they had that. But in the Super Nintendo version, the emphasis was placed on deking, so you can really get the goalie swimming on breakways, penalty shots, and the shootout. The Genesis version also lacked a feature found only on the SNES, defensive control. One irritating thing about any EA NHL game, up to NHL 17, is trying to take control of the right defenseman when the opposing team has a rush going. EA understood this frustration back in 1994 and created "defensive control" which allows you to pick the left or right defenseman by using the corresponding shoulder buttons.
Every NHL game for the 16-bit era after NHL 94 completely ruined AI and the tempo that makes NHL 94 a universal game. It really doesn't matter how often you practice with those later games, every game that you're playing your guys look like the 16-17 Colorado Avalanche out there, completely out of position in every fucking situation. Whereas the computer controlled opposing team looks like the goddamn Gretzky-era Edmonton Oilers with perfect passes and unbelievable speed.
I could go and on, but I think you get the point. I don't blame SNES Drunk for not going into this detail, it doesn't look like he's a fan of hockey.

See, I disagree. I really liked 94, but 95 was the game changer for me. First game that had a legit create a player and it didn't make the game totally cheese. My best friend and I perfected the one timer on the break using Quebec (long live the Nordiques!). And I never had the issue against the computer you did. IDK...what he said rang really true for me, though I UNDERSTAND why 94 is so beloved by so many. It's a great fucking game.

I only had NHL Stanley Cup.
At first it seemed not worth playing.
Then I learned how to exploit the AI and would score 20 goals if I used the 20 min clock.
I’m dying to play it again. Nostalgia and all. And I haven’t played in ten years.

The problem with 94 and up is they removed fighting...of course, the problem with 92 and 93 is there's no one timer. I think I prefer the first two for playing 2 player (it's so fun to fight your buddy!), and 94 or 95 for single player.

Love that you tossed in stuff like Super Hockey '94. That's a goofy game. I collect hockey games so I own that and play it on the Retron - you can score from across the other end of the ice lol. I actually like the PAL release of Stanley Cup (just "Super Hockey") for its goofy fantasy team names. But in all honestly, NHL 96 is probably my fave. Skip ahead past the SNES and NHL 2002 for GBA has the 16-bit engine with all the current teams (sans Winnipeg) if you really want a more up-to-date experience...

I loved Stanley Cup 😂 game was so good, I found an exploit were you shoot the puck over the goalie and it bounces back in front of the net. The goalie thinks it’s behind the net and goes around and you shoot it into the open goal. Hahaha
    Good times

You could also dump rhe puck and it would go right over the goalies head and in if judged correctly. I tried to play normally most of the time, but it could get frustrating throwing 40 shots at some of the better goalies and losing 1-0.

NHL 96 still featured the Nordiques, actually, even though they had already become the Colorado Avalanche before that season.
I apologise for the brick of text, but my theory is that it's because after the team moved, they announced their new name as the "Rocky Mountain Extreme"... which was then scrapped immediately afterwards, because nobody really liked it that much. (It was too 90s for the 90s, basically. :P) So then they had to come up with _another_ new identity; logo, uniforms, etc. all in the same summer, and this was going on while EA was finishing up NHL 96. This would've also been in the days before teams gave game devs the inside scoop on new uniforms for 100% realism, so in all likelihood EA just didn't _know_ what the team was gonna be called; my guess is this, maybe combined with them having to use the full, unused schedule from the lockout-shortened 1994-95 season in the game's season mode (which still had them in the Eastern Conference), is what led to them just keeping them as the Quebec Nordiques for one final year.

In EA Sports NHL 96 one thing they got wrong, was the Quebec Nordiques they were in the game. But the team left Quebec City and went to Denver Colorado in become the Colorado Avalanche. It's a good thing that EA sports NHL 97 got it right and pay attention to their hockey news, before the 96-97 NHL season. EA Sports NHL 97 the Colorado avalanche that was in the video game also the Phoenix Coyotes team that was the original Winnipeg Jets and Wayne Gretzky is in the St Louis Blues roster, but one problem he's on the New York Rangers roster. He signed with them during the off-season

Do the Damphouse deke, were you attack from goalies right side, put the puck on your backhand and then a quick change when youre close to the goalie to forehand and tap on shoot button. Works sometimes even when you passed the goal line. Takes some practice to do but it be a good deke to know to help you score in any EA hockey game that ever got made even to this day

I would love to see a robot futuristic hockey game. Where the robot looses limps instead of teeth. A hart hit spills bolts on the surface. This would be doable in this age. You can customize a robot team and so forth maybe add spray painted slogans you write on the robot such as your mamma was a snowblower. This would be fun and perhaps get a wider audience into hockey.

Don’t suppose you ever picked up on the unreleased Roller Hockey International game? It was basically RHI licensed teams and players running on the Brett Hull Hockey engine. I happened upon this game on emulator. Yea, it plays bad (because it’s Brett Hull Hockey reskinned), but man, did playing as the Philadelphia Bulldogs bring me back to the summer of 1994. That was a good time.
