Sawyer Michaelson Be a Pro was best in 14. Really liked the like/dislike system of the fans, coach, management, and team along with the post game interviews and random events. Bought 15 thinking it was going to expand in it and the guy at GameStop laughed when I had the game back to return in less than an hour. Still pull 14 out and play from time to time. Wouldn’t mind something more immersive though.

The EA game is just lazy. That’s basically the bottom line. Playing NHL 20, there were so many missed opportunities to just make the game more fun. This doesnt even have to come from the gameplay itself but just stuff that you can include in the game presentation wise for example, pregame warmups, player interviews, live score updates across the league in franchise mode during a game. It’s just lazy. The current franchise mode for NHL 20 has a tshirt promo and on the tshirt it has a team logo and 2017-2018 on it.... L A Z Y
The gameplay is pretty much the only thing the game has going for it, and that hasn't really changed in years. Also, even then there are points in the gameplay i think could be executed much better

The AI sucks, defenseman don’t play correctly in front of their own net. On a 2 on 1, the guy without the puck skates past the goal line. And, goalies make stupid unrealistic saves.
Agree my defense on all star on nhl 17 literally just move out of the way and guys will go for a line change as your passing to them giving you an icing it’s horrible. It’s like if in madden the cpu threw a pass and before you could take control your corner would run the opposite direction
Also, trying to actually play as the goalie is a lame experience. You either move so slow that one-timers are a death sentence, or so fast that you leave the crease with a single flick of the stick. Nevermind the fact that most of the actual save mechanics are done completely for you, and you share almost none of the same controls as a skater. Like, ok, when i'm a winger I press RB to poke check. What does RB do as a goalie? NOTHING! Why would you change that?! And there's input lag so when I call for a pass right when someone already decided to pass to me, I now just throw the puck away as soon as I get it.

They slowly fleshed it out and made it more and more anti consumer as the years went on so the core fanbase wouldn't notice it happening and it worked really well because the madden fanbase is legit blind to the garbage their playing right now
Yeah the soundtrack. Preferably get tracks from bands that people HAVE HEARD OF. Or use in-house compositions - sometimes they're better than the licenced stuff. IMO, the NHL 2001 track Dwight The Goalie Pilot is the best track on any NHL soundtrack, a masterpiece of drum'n'bass if there ever was one.
my one thing would be CPU's that know position in hockey. Ex: dont skate away from a possible 2 on 1, or stand outside the blue line as the defenseman on a power play.

Great vid. I loved the games back in the 90s and early 20s. Now the game doesn't change much and there are too many hardcores online so now I just enjoy playing offline Season mode
A little story line and the attribute system like 2K would be sick. Then have threes and drop in and pro am where you use your pro. I think it would be sweet.

Not gonna lie, nhl 19 is underrated. It only gets shit, no praise. Everyone says the want it to go back to the old days, but 19 was really good (although it was the only good next gen game)

You have to change the strategy for the AI to not dump the puck during a PK. If it's on Standard, Conservative or Defend, they'll always dump it no matter the situation. If it's on Aggressive or Full Attack, they'll hang on to it and bring it up ice

@Preston Ruttan there's half the aspects that are realistic and the other half are horrendously unrealistic. People would love true realism but when you have things like backskating and having full puck control, dangles for days, etc. and super poor ai it ruins the experience of some of the great realism touches they do have.
@Preston Ruttan I played NHL 11 to death and had a blast, then I was busy in life for a while but decided to buy NHL 18. Yea, game is incredibly boring to play, sure the presentation and graphics are nice, but the gameplay is just not fun in any way. The AI is in some way heavily improved in that their passing in the offensive zone is much better, but they are also incredibly frustrating to play against due to OBVIOUS cheating from their part. The worst part is how awful your own player's AI is. Whenever I play NHL 18 I feel like I could be doing something else more fun with my time, and i'm right, game isn't fun. I don't touch online btw.

I don't play many games these days, but from the few new games I have tried it feels like it is a current trend in gaming, realism over fun gameplay. I don't care how good the game looks, I don't care how realistic the animations are, I don't care how much content the game has, if it isn't fun there is no point. Everything else is secondary, and I feel like the prioritizations these days are awful, gaming used to be much more fun honestly. Sure you can't measure fun, it is subjective, but I could argue for days on why games aren't as fun as they used to be, in general obviously, there are exceptions.
I used to buy every year, now I wait every couple years. I used to look up the release date and get so excited at the end of August when it was getting close. I jumped from 18 to 20 this year, and probably won't get another until the PS5 generation. Its depressing how far the quality has dropped...
When talking about NHL I feel like almost everyone forgets how fun the gameplay is. That is the most single important thing in any game, specially sportsgame. I played FIFA from FIFA 10 to FIFA 18 and invested my soul in the series. I´m a massive football (soccer) fan so the choice was simple for me. But in the end it was boring gameplay the killed the hype of FIFA for me. Ultimate team was and is a great game mode, but in the end it didn´t matter because the games was too dull. I have a lot of friends who still play FIFA but almost any actual game, just grinds the market or open packs. But last I rediscovered NHL, and i fell instant in love, because the gameplay is so intense and fun. NHL also made me a big fan of Hockey again. Yes, the gamemodes can improve but the main focus should always be gameplay. Love the channel from Sweden!

I liked 95 a bit better, they added trading. I think 96 had crested a player so you could play with Gretzky and Lemieux. After that it was a bit of a drop.

Make "Be a Pro" start at childhood learning to skate (tutorial mode), key milestones like high school and college championships and tryouts, playing street for a bit, all working your way towards the pros. Then it's all about the cup
What I would do is have a quick time event mode or kind of story mode. It recaps legendary moments in hockey history and puts them into a game. Examples: Leafs vs Bruins Game 7 2013, Blackhawks vs Flyers Game 6 2010 and many other amazing moments. It would tell the story throughout the “Episode” and when you needed to step in to make history it would give you a quick time event. If you fail you lose that part of the “Episode” and have to restart. Get it right, you complete that task. I would enjoy it personally but I would understand why some people wouldn’t.
NHL needs a personalized Be A Pro mode with some effort out into it. It’s unacceptable to enter free agency as the Hart Trophy and Conn Smythe winner as a playmaking center and only draw two 2-year contracts from 2 teams as your agent tells you the market is dried up.
I want a new shot aiming system that allows me to shoot for open spaces rather then what ever corner I tilt my stick into (usually upper as I'm skating forward).
The Slapshot motion controls. It made it so I can't go back to traditional ea hockey games. Actually having to wind up and shoot, cross check to hit, and so on, made it something I still play almost daily. I can't get out to a rink, and growing up, there was only one other hockey fan I knew. This was/is a decent substitute. I would love to see a better version of this return.
In order to make the series fun again, it requires only a few minor upgrades: AllStar weekend (skills + games), scrap the HUT, EASHL or whatever useless modes the game is full of now, focus on OFFLINE modes such as BAGM, BAP. EA, there you go, you can have that advice for free.
Story mode for Be A Pro for sure - it’s something that’s actually watchable for someone else to play on TH-cam which was a big push for NBA 2K. Also, the game needs to be more in depth offline which creates more interest in online modes.
I've always hoped one day an NHL game would be made where in the Be A Pro mode (or its equivalent) you also control your player off ice. Where you have to attend practices, manage fitness in the offseason, but also enjoy your money by buying cars, properties and such and actually be able to use them in the city you are playing in (unless you are on the road obviously). I want a full on NHL player experience as much detail as possible, I realize it would be a huge undertaking and probably quite niche but it would be a really interesting game mode, would probably require next gen consoles to operate.
1. Winter classic 2. 11 vs 11 brandy mode (nhl meets FIFA) 3. Street mode with 3-6 players per team with option of in-line or quad skates and option of street puck or ball.
The career mode needs to be upgraded, its literally been the same since NHL 11. It needs to be like NBA 2k where there’s a deep story mode, a my park and you can upgrade your player through offline and play as them in online too. They also need to add Gm connected and add the frostbite engine
The 90s NHL games were amazing. More arcade style and focused! Even people who didn't like hockey would play those games. I also agree with a previous comment about NHL games needing to make a return to PC, as well.

Its been the same game since like 09... no market competition... no ground breaking or new modes, no good story line in career. The same gm/franchise mode for the last 3 years.... changes menu layout/color every year and calls it a day. Same (NON world of chel) equipment/customize options... remember when you could run the goalie depending on speed? that was fun! Take a page out of NHL hits and bring come CRAZY arenas and scenarios?
NHL07 - NHL15 or so the Capitals goalie masks don't change and I'm pretty sure the others dont either, and it takes 3-4 releases for anything new to be added and make it worth buying. Making it so you can customize your pro and his equipment more (or just have more than 5 options) would be amazing, as would customizing goalie masks. Making a be a pro story of some sort or just more involved behind the scenes would be great. The 3's thing with the mascots can stay, it's really fun when a friend and I sitting in the same room play as the fridge raiders together and it becomes a silly check everything contest.
I still play nhl95 on snes and a whike back my buddies and I had some beers and fired up nhl 99 for n64 and had a downright blast.....cant say that for alot of the new stuff. I also miss the first person fights
EASHL list of needs: -Bring back hits after the whistle -More accurate poke checks -Choosing what type of Player your CPU goalie or player is .....but that would all make too much sense and this is an EA title....
story mode like madden!! i stopped playing NHL games because i got so hooked on the madden 20 FOF, its an amazing game mode and id love to see it in NHL 21.
Be a pro progression is all I ask for. Like show us records that can be broken. Trophy cabinet for the awards we earn throughout the season. Even the all star weekend would be nice. I choice on where to be traded to. Just stuff to keep you immersed in the game
My suggestion, which I've even tried writing to EA about is bring the old looks of equipment, old great teams over many years, from Bobby Orr ( with 70's look) to Mario an Gretzky ..
You already said Be A Pro - Story Mode. I haven't played Madden in years, but if it follows your entire career, that'll be great. Also, improving the soundtrack to have more songs.
Be a pro needs more to it like a story being able to get to talk to teammates in a way and being able to play past the first round of playoffs and being able to hold the cup maybe even being able to become the captain
Do something retro like a NHL-Greatest Teams of All Time format, with like the 81 Islanders, 84 Oilers, 1970 Bruins, 1974 Flyers, 95 NY Rangers, 79 Canadiens etc. Like what Madden 94 once did. It would be cool to play as Bobby Orr or Wayne Gretzky.
Just want a compelling story mode like the Journey and The Longshot. Integrate some of the modes together. It would be interesting to start as a player on World of CHEL circuit, and catching the attention of your favourite team in the NHL.
Play station NHL O8 for me has really good graphics, but the best part is creating any season i want, with player creation of myself and all the current players of the day. I created a WHA (World Hockey Association) for off season play. So essentially I have Hockey year round , with a throw in of International Jr and teams tournaments with teams representing their cities and country's. For me the creation aspect is the best part of the game,and my interest continues to carry me threw.
I stopped in NHL 11 when my stick kept breaking every time I tried to take a shot from the point. When my teammates suggested practice more I quit. Will practice make my stick stop breaking? I will never know...

Sure you can't measure fun, it is subjective, but I could argue for days on why games aren't as fun as they used to be, in general obviously, there are exceptions.
Yeah you're right. NHL 18 was just a lot less fun for me, even with all of the tweaking to the sliders. It was a chore.

I used to buy every year, now I wait every couple years. I used to look up the release date and get so excited at the end of August when it was getting close. I jumped from 18 to 20 this year, and probably won't get another until the PS5 generation. Its depressing how far the quality has dropped...

When talking about NHL I feel like almost everyone forgets how fun the gameplay is. That is the most single important thing in any game, specially sportsgame. I played FIFA from FIFA 10 to FIFA 18 and invested my soul in the series. I´m a massive football (soccer) fan so the choice was simple for me. But in the end it was boring gameplay the killed the hype of FIFA for me. Ultimate team was and is a great game mode, but in the end it didn´t matter because the games was too dull. I have a lot of friends who still play FIFA but almost any actual game, just grinds the market or open packs. But last I rediscovered NHL, and i fell instant in love, because the gameplay is so intense and fun. NHL also made me a big fan of Hockey again. Yes, the gamemodes can improve but the main focus should always be gameplay.

I liked 95 a bit better, they added trading. I think 96 had crested a player so you could play with Gretzky and Lemieux. After that it was a bit of a drop.

Make "Be a Pro" start at childhood learning to skate (tutorial mode), key milestones like high school and college championships and tryouts, playing street for a bit, all working your way towards the pros. Then it's all about the cup

What I would do is have a quick time event mode or kind of story mode. It recaps legendary moments in hockey history and puts them into a game. Examples: Leafs vs Bruins Game 7 2013, Blackhawks vs Flyers Game 6 2010 and many other amazing moments. It would tell the story throughout the “Episode” and when you needed to step in to make history it would give you a quick time event. If you fail you lose that part of the “Episode” and have to restart. Get it right, you complete that task. I would enjoy it personally but I would understand why some people wouldn’t.
NHL needs a personalized Be A Pro mode with some effort out into it. It’s unacceptable to enter free agency as the Hart Trophy and Conn Smythe winner as a playmaking center and only draw two 2-year contracts from 2 teams as your agent tells you the market is dried up.
I want a new shot aiming system that allows me to shoot for open spaces rather then what ever corner I tilt my stick into (usually upper as I'm skating forward).

The Slapshot motion controls. It made it so I can't go back to traditional ea hockey games.
Actually having to wind up and shoot, cross check to hit, and so on, made it something I still play almost daily. I can't get out to a rink, and growing up, there was only one other hockey fan I knew. This was/is a decent substitute. I would love to see a better version of this return.
NHL 04 and NHL 06 are still my favorites. EA needs competition. Also Be a Pro desperately needs to be updated. Make it more like 2K's.
In order to make the series fun again, it requires only a few minor upgrades: AllStar weekend (skills + games), scrap the HUT, EASHL or whatever useless modes the game is full of now, focus on OFFLINE modes such as BAGM, BAP.
EA, there you go, you can have that advice for free.

Story mode for Be A Pro for sure - it’s something that’s actually watchable for someone else to play on TH-cam which was a big push for NBA 2K.
Also, the game needs to be more in depth offline which creates more interest in online modes.

I've always hoped one day an NHL game would be made where in the Be A Pro mode (or its equivalent) you also control your player off ice. Where you have to attend practices, manage fitness in the offseason, but also enjoy your money by buying cars, properties and such and actually be able to use them in the city you are playing in (unless you are on the road obviously). I want a full on NHL player experience as much detail as possible, I realize it would be a huge undertaking and probably quite niche but it would be a really interesting game mode, would probably require next gen consoles to operate.

1. Winter classic 2. 11 vs 11 brandy mode (nhl meets FIFA) 3. Street mode with 3-6 players per team with option of in-line or quad skates and option of street puck or ball.
The career mode needs to be upgraded, its literally been the same since NHL 11. It needs to be like NBA 2k where there’s a deep story mode, a my park and you can upgrade your player through offline and play as them in online too. They also need to add Gm connected and add the frostbite engine
The 90s NHL games were amazing. More arcade style and focused! Even people who didn't like hockey would play those games. I also agree with a previous comment about NHL games needing to make a return to PC, as well.
Sadly, Live The Life was the last time Be A Pro was good. They could expand on that with a story driven mode where you actually “Live The Life”

Yes. Totally under appreciated game. It's the reason I still play on a Wii. It is probably my most played game of all of my 30 years gaming. It is just that great.

Its been the same game since like 09... no market competition... no ground breaking or new modes, no good story line in career. The same gm/franchise mode for the last 3 years.... changes menu layout/color every year and calls it a day. Same (NON world of chel) equipment/customize options... remember when you could run the goalie depending on speed? that was fun! Take a page out of NHL hits and bring come CRAZY arenas and scenarios?

NHL07 - NHL15 or so the Capitals goalie masks don't change and I'm pretty sure the others dont either, and it takes 3-4 releases for anything new to be added and make it worth buying. Making it so you can customize your pro and his equipment more (or just have more than 5 options) would be amazing, as would customizing goalie masks. Making a be a pro story of some sort or just more involved behind the scenes would be great.
The 3's thing with the mascots can stay, it's really fun when a friend and I sitting in the same room play as the fridge raiders together and it becomes a silly check everything contest.

I still play nhl95 on snes and a whike back my buddies and I had some beers and fired up nhl 99 for n64 and had a downright blast.....cant say that for alot of the new stuff. I also miss the first person fights

Be a pro progression is all I ask for. Like show us records that can be broken. Trophy cabinet for the awards we earn throughout the season. Even the all star weekend would be nice. I choice on where to be traded to. Just stuff to keep you immersed in the game

I stopped playing Ea's NHL series in 2009 when they stopped releasing on the PC.
Haven't bought an NHL game new since NHL 15 and routinely log time into NHL Hitz 2003's franchise mode still to this day

Be a pro needs more to it like a story being able to get to talk to teammates in a way and being able to play past the first round of playoffs and being able to hold the cup maybe even being able to become the captain
I want a remaster or sequel for Rock the Rink. That was a wacky and insane game that deserved (and still deserves) a new entry in any form.

Do something retro like a NHL-Greatest Teams of All Time format, with like the 81 Islanders, 84 Oilers, 1970 Bruins, 1974 Flyers, 95 NY Rangers, 79 Canadiens etc. Like what Madden 94 once did. It would be cool to play as Bobby Orr or Wayne Gretzky.
Just want a compelling story mode like the Journey and The Longshot. Integrate some of the modes together. It would be interesting to start as a player on World of CHEL circuit, and catching the attention of your favourite team in the NHL.
I always loved the "one timer from anywhere" goals on Breakaway 98. We had to make a no one timer rule because it was so broken.

Play station NHL O8 for me has really good graphics, but the best part is creating any season i want, with player creation of myself and all the current players of the day. I created a WHA (World Hockey Association) for off season play. So essentially I have Hockey year round , with a throw in of International Jr and teams tournaments with teams representing their cities and country's. For me the creation aspect is the best part of the game,and my interest continues to carry me threw.
I stopped in NHL 11 when my stick kept breaking every time I tried to take a shot from the point. When my teammates suggested practice more I quit. Will practice make my stick stop breaking? I will never know...
