    The Fifth and final step to Understanding Club Soccer in Europe. How are players transferred between clubs? When can these transfers occur? Is it expensive? Custom tailored for Americans.
    Transcript
    Welcome to Understanding Soccer in Europe: The Fifth Step Transfers: A Guide For Americans. Now that we know the Four Basics of Soccer in Europe, It’s time for the final step, TRANSFERS. A TRANSFER OCCURS when a player under contract moves between clubs. There are a few differences between Europe and the US here. #1. Unlike most American sports, TRADING PLAYERS is quite rare in European Soccer. #2, managers can be transferred as well. And #3, sometimes a team has no current use for a player but wants them back in the future. In this case, Team A will LOAN a player to Team B for a set period of time, from just a few weeks to up to multiple seasons.
    But all of this action can’t just happen at any time because FIFA only allows for 2 transfer periods or WINDOWS per year, once in the summer for up to 12 weeks and once in the winter for up to 4 weeks. Each country can decide exactly when their window opens and closes as long as they fall within these time constraints. So, when a given league’s window IS open, a player can transfer within that league OR from a league in another country EVEN IF THE OTHER COUNTRY’S WINDOW HAS CLOSED. SO, it is the country of DESTINATION that determines if a player can move teams or not.
    OK, so we know what a transfer is and when it can happen. But what actually occurs if Team A wants a player from Team B? GREAT QUESTION: Well if the player is any good, Team B won’t just give them away, but they will CHARGE Team A and give up their rights to the player, and this CHARGE is called a TRANSFER FEE. When team A wants a really good player from Team B, the sky’s the limit on the FEE. And HERE is a quick look at the history of record-breaking transfer fees.
    Way back in 1893 Striker Willie Groves was sold by English side West Bromwich Albion to Aston Villa for 100 pounds (the first 3 digit transfer fee in known history) and from that point, it’s been game on. The 1,000 LB mark was crossed just 12 years later in 1905. 10,000 LBS in 1928, 150K LBS in 1961, 500K just 7 years later. Then in 1975 Italian Striker Giuseppi Savoldi was sold to Napoli for 1.2M LBS (The first at 7 figures). But this that noise shrinks in comparison to more recent activity which has seen Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009 bought by Real Madrid for 80M LBS ($137M) and Madrid was at it again in 2013 when they bought Gareth Bale for an estimated 100M LBS, which is $146M, and remember that’s just for the right to pay Bale an additional $26M per year to play in Madrid. The reason we say “an estimated 100MP” is because the exact fees are not often unknown because they are incentivized by stats like time played, goals scored and trophies won.
    So, after the TRANSFER FEE is agreed upon by both clubs, the player must pass a medical exam AND agree to terms on a NEW (LARGER) CONTRACT with his new club. The player is then usually introduced to the media and fans, then is free to play in his new home. And THAT is how transfers work in Soccer in Europe. Thanks for Watching.

      Depending on the league but simply put: if on team values a player under contract they can trade other players for said player. Sometimes 1 player can be traded for multiple people. This typically occurs when someone that is playing on a losing team with no chance of making the postseason, there is no Promotion/Relegation, who might fetch an expensive contract the next season
      MLB teams often will trade a player for multiple future stars and sometimes the deal will include cash considerations and draft picks.

      Leagues in North America can sign free agents at any point, again each league has its own rules to this matter. Trade deadlines are set a specific points in the season usually with 1/4 left in the season.

    Do the players have a choice or is it 100% up to the teams about transfers?

      As far as I know, football/soccer players have a contract for several years. If that contract runs out, they can either make a new one with the same club (if the club accepts) or transfer to a different club. If their old club doesn't want them anymore, they have to find a new one. They can also change club when they still have a contract, as long as their current club allows it.
      I apologize if I made any mistakes, my English isn't the best ^_^

      A player can reject the contract from the other club, even though the clubs have decided on a transfer fee. If the player rejects the contract the transfer is cancelled.
      If a players contract runs out with their current club. They become a free agent, and can sign for any club they want.

      The players have a choice, of course. They can initiate negotiations for a transfer and make the teams work everything out (although this is a bit shameful for the player as it shows greed) renew their contract if both them and the team want, leave the team when the contract expires, decide which team they want to play for (from these who offer a position) and/or reject whatever they feel like. It's almost an open market.

    • @saucydaddy6931
      @saucydaddy6931 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The team will accept a bid for the player but it would be for the player to decide if he wants to sign the contract and legally join the team who bided for them.

    Ok so why is Willie Groves saying “I’m rich!!!” if his old club is the recipient of the transfer fee?
    This is the part that consistently confuses me. If Ajax pays €17b to Bayern for Donglediño - does the player see any of that? What if the buying club can’t come to terms with the player they just paid the fee to?

    • @edgargallegos9765
      @edgargallegos9765 ปีที่แล้ว

      The player receives an small percentage of the purchase. The team must first agree on everything with the player prior to pay to the other team. Also, if the player is injured the whole operation is cancelled

    how do you go pro, is there a draft?

    • @saucydaddy6931
      @saucydaddy6931 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      You start off playing for a youth team, or a pro team's academy to train young kids/teenagers and young adults and eventually when they are good enough , they will join the main team playing Professional football/soccer.

    • @martinxp86
      @martinxp86 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      No. Most players start at their local team (usually amateur club) and get sold or move to a better club if they reach the required level or show potential. Any player can potentially join any club and any club can potentially buy any player at any time if all parties agree.

    • @AFCA-vn9bl
      @AFCA-vn9bl 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      martinxp86 lol they don't buy 6 years old. They usually scout hundreds of kids and invite them for trials. Then they they keep on making smaller selections and eventually a few kids are allowed to join one of the professional club's youth teams

    • @martinxp86
      @martinxp86 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No, I wrote "get sold OR move", which of course includes what you describe. Where should they scout them if not at their local club? But there are also many examples where players literally move up league per league and, say, get sold to a pro club at 21 by an amateur club.

    • @meltedbutters9821
      @meltedbutters9821 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      there is no such thing as a draft...the pro team make an academy and if they find potential in the academy....they *sign* the player

    how bout Free Transfers ...

    • @Psi-Storm
      @Psi-Storm 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are pretty common. Players sign multi year contracts and when those run out they can transfer freely, but teams are interested to re-sign the players early so they get paid when another club really wants the player.

  • @aaronmontgomery6977
    @aaronmontgomery6977 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    are there no free agents? can players ever decide where they want to play?

    • @osiand9328
      @osiand9328 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Players who have run out their contract are free agents

    • @TheRedSphinx
      @TheRedSphinx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeapp, six months before their contracts expire, players have the right to start talking to other clubs. A club does not hold the rights to a player after a contract expires. It's been like this in the EU since 1995 "Bosman ruling" by the European Court of Justice.

  • @aaronmontgomery6977
    @aaronmontgomery6977 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    wait why don't they trade players?

    • @Psi-Storm
      @Psi-Storm 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no limit on the number of players you can have and no limit on the total salary of your team. So you buy the player you want from a top team and sell the players that under perform to less wealthy clubs.

    • @TheRedSphinx
      @TheRedSphinx 3 ปีที่แล้ว
