      +renealanis Everybody who follows football (soccer) Identifies their team as if we own the team. The sense of ownership towards a team you love makes the sport even better. It's more satisfying to do so when there are football rivalry matches and "my" team wins you can actually have a sense of achievement. The guy who made the video apparently doesn't have passion towards football.

    If you've supported the same team since childhood then it is always "We" if followed by "Won" or "Drew". It is always "That" or "Those" when followed by "bunch of tossers" or "bunch of over-paid prima donnas" when "They" lost.

      they don't ask, because it would be well established that the conversation is about pro football and people would know I don't play pro football.
      on the other hand If the conversation was about my own sunday game it would also be established at the beginning. furthermore, people, where I'm from, would do the same "we" talking about their team so misunderstandings are not likely.

  • @Laurent_08
    @Laurent_08 10 ปีที่แล้ว +563

    You're so wrong about possessive pronous. In Europe every fan say "we". Our team is a part of our identity. In America a sport is above all a show, the main goal is to be entertained. In Europe (and all over the world, in particular in South America) soccer is not a show, it's not an entertainment, it's not a game it's a religion. It's a cultural thing that Americans can't understand
    Being a fan of a team is not something that you choose, it's in your blood. Often it's a familial heritage.
    Sorry for my English, i'm french. Good video ;)

      Kerlond, I understand.
      I was just making fun with people in the US who identify so strongly with their teams (particularly in College sports). I didn't really choose any of my favorite US sports teams, When I was young, I just adopted them from my parents, who got them from their parents. The weird thing here is the habit of saying, "We won" but when the team loses to say, "They lost". Either way, thanks for watching and thanks for your post, your english is great.

      +unnerum you don't really need to be from the area of the club to support it, I'm from Colombia and I started to support Tottenham when I saw a game against Basel in 2010 I just thought "this guys are awesome" and did some research to find out when they play and the league, the rivalry, the history; and it was later that I found that following Spurs isn't easy, they fuck up some stuff but in the end it doesn't matter because I believe in a brighter future for my team just like any other fan.

    Saying that you can't call a team "my" is the stupidest thing i have ever heard. The thing that makes football (soccer) so great is the connection one has to the team. In latin america we call the teams we follow "my team" or "our team" as that sense of ownership fuels our passion for the sport mate. It's the same for all over the world. Except for you as I can see from the video...

      I was thinking the same thing.
      I suppoort my small local dutch team NAC-Breda.
      And I always talk about how "we won" or how "we lost" (second one being immensly more likely.)
      And so does just about everyone I ever spoke to regarding football. Always talking about "us" when talking of their team.

      Rik Speek "small local team" are you kidding me?...

    • @thedutchman01
      @thedutchman01 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      AFCA 1900 You want to make the claim NAC-Breda is a huge internationally supported team? Or people from all over the Netherlands come and suipport it? Because that'd be dumb to claim...
      Unlike with Ajax... Which is internationally known. And has gloryhunters from all over the country.

    • @AFCA-vn9bl
      @AFCA-vn9bl 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      NAC Breda is in the highest division from the netherlands, the top 18. And their are thousands of clubs in the netherlands so nac is a huge club compared to other clubs, a small local team means like an amateur club

    • @thedutchman01
      @thedutchman01 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      AFCA 1900 ...*sighs*
      Not that opne can expect any proper thinking skills of an ajax-fan. Obviously when calling NAC small. It is indeed compared to other professional teams.
      And it is small in having only a localized small are where the fans come from. By comparison.
      Such things should not need to be said. They are implied by defacto. Yes. Sorry I did not say "by comparison" I thought anyone could have figured that out by themselves. Apparently I was wrong in thinking that.

      Actually 20 men, case the other two are keepers (goal keepers) but then to narrow that down really only 4 people are on the ball whether recovering possession or using the ball to retain possession, and you never play 90 mins straight, germans didn't win 2016 euros, big up gary

I was there when we were humiliated, and when we triumphed. Just like my dad before me, and his dad before him. My club is the pride of my city. It’s an 120 old institution. Yeh sorry to disagree but as a Liverpool supporter it is always we win or lost, saying not to watch the ball during a game is a little over the top but I sort of understand where they are coming from, but it's still a simple game, maybe I have just watched it so long that I'm constantly looking at the entire screen anyway screaming at a player to pass it wide when a player is through, but I would say at first just watch it with someone that knows the rules and the game because it makes it so much easier.

  • @matthewgarofalo9032
    @matthewgarofalo9032 9 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    This is a good video, but understanding a team's formation isn't really that important for people new to soccer. Player movement is so frenetic and fluid in a game that formations often loose importance in matches and give way more to specific roles or player assignments which are maintained throughout the match. But even this is probably too advanced for someone new to the sport. I agree with your other reasons to help people get into the sport, but seeing soccer as a skill game is what holds back many people from enjoying it. I think many Americans simply don't realize the technical ability required for players to make certain plays. They don't understand something like a backheel to an attacking teammate or a one-touch pass can often require immense skill and vision which is only seen at the top levels of the sport. But all and all, I think this is a good video.

    • @shutupaleix
      @shutupaleix 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I kinda disagree on a specific part of your comment. As an American, I didn't really enjoy soccer until I understood how movement within the game worked. Being able to see passing lanes, notice players making runs into space, and notice players pulling defenders out of position by making runs into said spaces, among other things, really opened up the sport for me as far as enjoying it goes. Hell, understanding tactical movement in soccer even made me better appreciate other sports as similar concepts can be found in ice hockey, basketball, and even American football, albeit to varying degrees.

    These are my the most important steps for you to watch soccer.
    1.-Pick a team, follow it and get updates.
    2.-Invite friends over, specially if they follow the same team as you or a rival team.
    3.-Get a lot beer and snacks.
    4.-Bet something on it; for example, whoever loses; hosts the next game.
    5.-Games don’t particularly need many goals to be entertaining and even a draw can be great if there are a lot of chances created and shots saved; so, cheer and don’t be shy.

      thanks for the love papa,
      Yeah, even as a Barcelona fan, Di Maria is sick. Great pick up. Falcao wasn't bad either. Will they finish in the top 3, if I had to bet I would bet straight up, I would have be bet against them this year. But who knows, the season is so long. All the TV shows make a big deal of each and every week, which they have to in order to fill up content time. But every year a team runs off 5 of 6 wins to start and finishes mid-table or worse. Either way, it will be great to watch. Glad you enjoyed the video!

    one thing Americans don't understand about Football is that the near misses are as exciting as scoring in US sports. You could have a 2-1 final score, which most in the US would think boring due to the low score, but if there were lot's of shots on goal and exciting near misses it can still be an entertaining game to watch. I've been watching National teams since HS and it took me many years to finally understand the flow and pace of the game. Playing Football and especially playing a Football video game especially helps. Also, many Americans aren't especially knowledgeable in regards to other countries and/or geography, so the Championship league and/or Premier league are quite foreign to them. Most Americans don't know where Liverpool or Newcastle are in the UK or their differences, so it's difficult to buy into, even though it is an English speaking country. This is even more so when Bayern Munich is playing Juventus in the Champions League or what have you.
    It's a shame we can't generate more support for Football in the states considering our population and resources. Although with so many entrenched traditional sports in the US it's not surprising. Our country is so proud of proclaiming we're 'Number One' but we rarely compete at a high level in a sport that other nations are passionate about through out the entire globe. Thus we proclaim the World Series winner as if it was an international competition when all the teams and players, save a few from Canada and Latin America respectively, are American. We also do this in the American Football, Basketball and Hockey championships.

      Formations, it really could have a entire video about it, you showed the only tip of the iceberg in this one, people might think formations are static and don't change in the middle of the game, but as we know they change as fast as the ball changes possession, explain how some are more offensive, others defensive, formation tactics like offside lines, counter attacks, and all of this with this video idea, "unboringing Soccer" (this word exist? lol), it'll also help explain why you should pay a lot of attention on players without the ball...
      For me, formations are the most interesting part of Soccer, as it could change the whole game outcome, without any changes in players

    In Football, we say "We won" or "We lost" because it is "our" team, not sure what you talking about there.
    But I do agree that when you watch a Football match, you should not focus on the ball but on what the other players are doing without the ball.
    Sometimes you can see a goal coming even if it is a long way from the goal line by just watching how the players are moving on the pitch (that's why there are so many armchair managers in football).
    Football is highly tactical, it is not just about kicking a ball.

    I'd say that the hardest thing about finding soccer interesting is learning how to tell when a team is getting close to scoring, and how dangerous the situation is. In American sports, we have "mini-goals" that are stepping stones to actually scoring. I'm talking about that sense of accomplishment that comes from getting on base (or advancing one or more bases) or earning a first down. Such mini-objectives in American sports serve as an objective way of measuring progress, making it easier for a newbie to know how well the game is going, and which team is doing better. Soccer lacks such concrete, simple, objective mini-goals, and as a result it takes some experience to know when a team makes a good play, and how close they are to scoring (or getting scored against!).
    This obstacle would hinder a sport's growth in any country where it wasn't already popular, not just in the USA.

    • @adnanomerovic1224
      @adnanomerovic1224 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Philip McNiel you can watch football also as conquering the field (european football just to be clear) just in bigger time intervals and also it is not just linear progression it is constantly searching for free space so that your formation can spread into enemy territory (I’m a bit dramatic with enemy terms). That is why possession is important and yet again not just passing a ball with out actual progression so that is why it can appear like its nothing happening when in reality 10 people trying to poses certain of field in certain periods of the game. Of course there are teams that are technically superior than other teams barcelona is best example, in that case opposing team deliberately surrender space and possession of the ball so with hard defense on their turf they can steal the ball and trough speed players use now large portion of the field that is unprotected coz technically superior team was to deep in enemy territory. I would say that middle field is the part you wanna dominate and that is where are the playmakers who set the pace rhythm and whole dynamics of game and when you direct your pace onto your rival you making them run more and as a result more tired and slower. Now obviously I’m talking bases here but my point was to in some way create a perspective of football as a concurring larger field piece by piece so you can progress toward the goal. Now of course is different you don’t have those markers but if you put a little effort and learn to recognize each players role (central back, offensive middle fielder wing or center for and so and so) different formations and give your self some time and patience and anticipation and how actions builds up, so when your team score you unleash something that was always inside you but only like this it is set free (now im poetic ). That is way even if game ends with one to null its not boring . Now of course there are boring games for sure and i do prefer NBA to any other sport, but amount of emotions are light years apart and that is the biggest difference in sport culture of USA and Europe, not to mention South America. Im not saying this is better and this is worse, just that emotional investment is a big part why is football like a religion (now that is cliche) live long and prosper

  • @MarcellusAugustusGermanicus

    the part about not referring to teams as "we" may count for americans and their franchises, cause their team can get transfered to another city, if some people are like it. but it makes no sense at all for football clubs in europe, i'm from Dortmund in Germany, and anything that ever happens to the club is refered to "us". it's our city, our coach, our players, our chants, our hopes, our success and our failure. the cultural aspect is huge, so if you have a club, and you are bleeding, sweating and shitting your club, the monday you get to work or school or whatever is horrible just because your team lost at the weekend, then you should always refer to it as "we". there's no "i" in teamwork. but don't try to be a bandwagoner obviously, there's a quote of Bergkamp, which explains it really well. "When you start supporting a club, you don't support it because of the trophies, or a player, or history, you support it because you found yourself somewhere there; found a place where you belong." it's a cultural thing, and because of the different ideologies in sports americans think differently about it. americans have franchises and their teams are not connected to the region or the city. but in european football, the cultural aspect is everything, it's "us". you can't take the BvB out of Dortmund and it's people, it's not just their sport-team, it's their family, region, culture, philosophy and home. it's a complete contrary mindset to american sports, hard to understand for most of them i think. there are players who start to play at the age of 5 years for their club, there's no drafting or whatever. it's a lifebound.

      @@zerevity007 of course it does. Fans are the most important part of the team because they are the reason players, coaches, staff make money. It means something to me because I've invested 20 years of my life watching it and playing it with friends growing up.
      I look at the phases the team is going through now and put them in perspective with the club's history. This creates a connection difficult to explain to someone who doesn't follow sports like you do. Players play better with the fan support. That is why we have a thing called ''home advantage'' in football. Mourinho had a 10 year streak withouth losing at home.
      Look at Liverpool and Man City. Two successful teams with two very different fan bases. On which stadium would you rather go and watch a game? You're telling me Liverpool's fans didn't play their part in the '05 UCL final against AC Milan? There are countless examples like this, both positive and negative. When fans stop supporting the team, it shows on the field.
