Yes, That is Rob Reiner the one and only actor to play Mike/Meathead. This clip is actually from a 2nd season flashback episode that starts with Mike and Gloria celebrating their first wedding anniversary and they start talking about when Gloria brought Meathead home to meet Archie for the first time. There’s a 3rd season 2 part flashback episode where it’s Mike and Gloria’s 3rd anniversary and in that one we see when they marry.
This is actually a flashback episode that was done in season 2 because back in 1972 America had the same question about how Meathead and Archie started when they first met.
Just to be pedantic, this isn't where it all started. It started back in the sixties, with the British show it was based on called "Til death do us part" which ran from 1965 to 1975. Archie Bunker was called Alf Garnet in the British original.
Archie's tie looked the way it did cuz Edith was in the middle of tying it for him when Gloria opened the door. They stopped in mid-tie cuz they were shocked at the Meathead's appearance. Back in those days the hippie look was very shocking to the previous generation cuz the men had long hair, ponytail's and they had a very unkempt and unwashed look about them.
When Archie said your polish, at that time in America, polish people were the brunt of a lot of polish jokes. They were deemed dumb by many Americans. I am Italian and we went through a lot of being made fun of also!
It is the same actor playing Meathead. A little FYI, the actor playing Meathead was actually losing his hair and wore a hairpiece the entire series. In many interviews he said he was the only cast member who never got recognized in public. Meathead is played by future famous director Rob reiner who is the son of legendary comedian and producer Carl Reiner.
Just so you know this was not one of the earliest episodes. This was a flashback to when Archie met Mike, when the series started they didn’t go back that far.
There was a time when there were many Polish jokes. They were called Pollocks slang for Extremely Disparaging and Offensive. a contemptuous term used to refer to a Pole or person of Polish descent. Or stupid person. Pronounced Pole Lock
Meathead is played my Rob Riener one of the most successful directors in US cinema. Including Stand By Me, Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally and many more. His father Carl Reiner was also a famous Actor/Director
Mike (meathead) was played by Rob Reiner the now famous movie producer in Hollywood. Carol O’Connor is who played Archie. He was a famous movie star prior to doing TV and passed away in 2001.
Lois and Peter are inspired by the bunkers but there was a show called wait til your father gets home is really what the family guy show is based off, the voice of the dad on that show was the actor that played Mr Cunningham on happy days
The actor playing meathead ( Mike) ended up becoming a well known and respected director. Some of his more famous films are A few Good Men, When Harry met Sally, Princess Bride , and Misery. He is the son of the legendary Carl Reiner.
The moment the door opens, Meathead is Archie's worst nightmare realized -- a counter-culture guy who looks like a quintessential hippy who is dating his daughter.
The reason Archie gave that expression after hearing Mike is Polish is because in his mind (and others at the time), Polish people were seen as stupid people. Pollack is a common insult towards Poles which Archie likes to use sometimes towards Mike.
Ethnic jokes were all the rage back in the 70's and Polish jokes were right up on top. The common insinuation was that all "Pollocks" were intellectually lacking.
Yes, this is Meathead, played by Rob Reiner. In real life, Reiner's politics make Meathead look like a right wing conservative. He is the son comedic great, Carl Reiner (Dick Van Dyke Show).
That is the meathead we all know and love, played by Rob Reiner. Interesting fact, there were 2 pilots before the show was picked up, and each of the pilots had different actors playing Mike and Gloria. In fact, Mike's name was originally Richard. And Archie's last name was originally Justice, and the show was going to be called Justice For All. The actors they had playing Richard and Gloria were nowhere near as good as the ones they finally got. So this Mike and Gloria are the 3rd ones playing those parts. Those unaired pilots can be found on TH-cam. The second pilot was called Those Were The Days.
Did you catch Archie saying Amscray! PigLatin was popular at the time, where you would take the opening consonant or consonant blend all the way up to the first vowel and then move it to the back of the line and then put ay at the end. It was mostly something kids did but everybody was familiar with it. If you get good at it it seems like you're speaking a foreign language, laugh. Archie was telling Meathead to scram. I'm actually not sure of the origin of it but it's been that way for a long time regarding Poles. Polack jokes were exceedingly popular and quite acceptable at the time, and I learned tons of them growing up, but really they are highly disrespectful. It ties in with this notion that Poles are dumb. No idea where that came from though.
When I was kid in the 70's, for some reason Polish jokes were really popular. The stereotype was similar to blonde jokes today. To this day, I'm not exactly sure why. I think it has to do with WWII, but that's just a guess.
Most large cities in the 1800s ended up with segregated neighborhoods based on imigrant's nationalities. They felt safe and comfortable there. Distinct lines of territories were drawn. All humans, whether they want to admit it or not, think that blowing out someone elses candle makes theirs burn brighter. Hence, nationality jokes and racism.
In regard to the Polish people right about that time There was a huge amount of Polish Jokes That were pretty mainstream during that time. Just thought you'd like to know
I’m pretty sure this was a later episode that was a flashback to when they first met. There were stereotypes about Polish people at the time. I won’t repeat them here, but they were not flattering.
The 3 things that makes Archie likeable as a character. 1: He was never a full blown racist. He was bigoted but he didn't wish harm on others he just didn't want them near him and didn't understand their struggles. 2: As the series went on he grew as a person even adopting a Jewish Girl Stephanie. 3: He did have a heart even for the "Meathead" I mean for all his jabs at Mike for not having a job and being in school he also kept a roof over his head and food in his belly. Which was a vast belly to fill according to Archie.
Meathead is played by Rob Reiner, who went on to direct movies like "This Is Spinal Tap", "The Princess Bride", "When Harry Met Sally", and "A Few Good Men".
Check out Archie Bunker's Place | Archie Mourns Edith | The Norman Lear Effect. This shows just how Amazing Carroll O'Connor was as an actor!! RIP Carroll!!
When I was growing up, which is when this show comes out, stupid jokes were told about Polish people. These are the jokes that later would be told about blondes, jokes of the "How many Poles does it take to screw in a lightbulb". There doesn't seem to have ever been a good reason for this. The US has no negative history with Poles, and the Polish general Casimir Pulaski was a big help to us in the American Revolution. (Chicago, where Mike says he comes from is a very Polish city, with Pulaski being one of the major streets). My guess is that there was an influx of Polish immigrants when the movie industry was getting going, and so a type of joke that would have been applied to whomever the newest immigrant was at a given time got fixed by the movies on Poles. But that is just a guess. I have never heard an explanation. But I think that is the only issue with Mike being Polish. If you ever see the very funny Coen Brothers movie Raising Arizona, Polish jokes actually play a role.
Immigrants from Poland, and even descendants of immigrants from Poland who had been in America for many years, were frequently looked down upon by WASPs (White Anglo-Saxon Americans) and Irish Catholic Americans. Even other American ethnic minority groups, like your Italians and Hispanics, viewed people with Polish ancestry the same way. They were derisively called, "Polacks", and were considered to be a stupid, backward people. In the '70s when this show took place some of the most common jokes people told were Polish jokes, like: *"How many Polacks does it take to screw in a ceiling light bulb?" "Ten. One to hold the bulb and 9 to turn the ladder."* Oh we'd laugh, and laugh and laugh, no matter how simple and silly the jokes were. Meathead told Archie he was from Chicago. Chicago had one of the largest Polish immigrant populations in the country. The popularity of telling Polish jokes gradually began fizzling out in the '80s in America, and while they still persisted somewhat into the early part of this century, I honestly haven't heard a good one in quite a while.
Yes! That's Rob Ryner later he had longer hair no beard. He's the son of veteran comedian actor writer Carl Ryner. F.Y.I. I think in the pilot the actress Jean Stapleton that played Edith is the only one from the original cast.✌️❤️
Yes Ms Britt please do research on Rob Reiner since he left the show in the 70's. Been active to say the least. Great director, accolade after accolade, some excellent movies that I am sure you have heard of or seen. Also, the often unappreciated 'Edith Bunker', was one of the best actresses I have been priveledged to love. 3 Emmys and 2 Golden Globes for best actress just for this show! If you watch, more than just excerps that address certain aspects of life, you can not help but to fall in love with Edith-Jean Stapleton! If you watch this heart wrenching, superb acting, decorated cast that faced 'head on'-hard topics of the day that are still relevant- and do not become emotional when Edith passes away? Then the premise of the show was not understood. Tackled in a funny-some time deadly serious-way exactly what the problems they faced stemmed from and comedically teaches its audience how to deal with them without violence. But realization of everyones part in any serious issue! Race, integration, segregation, bigotry, prejudice, homophobia, etc...! And many many more. IT ACTUALLY, IN ITS OWN WAY, HELPED TO HEAL AND HUSH OUR NATIONS INSECURITIES! PLANS FOR THE FUTURE, OBJECTIVITY, IN A HUMOROUS WAY, FOR SO MANY SOCIETAL ILLS THAT HAVE AND STILL PLAGUE OUR GREAT COUNTRY. SHOWS A PATH TO HAPPINESS AND AMERICAN PRIDE! Love you Ms Britt❤❤❤❤❤ so sorry for rant but great TV!
This is a "flashback" episode from Season two and that's a fake beard he's wearing (as is most of his hair because he was starting to go bald in real life). There's another "flashback" episode that shows Mike and Gloria getting married in their house as well.
Polish jokes were very popular in the 70s. Making fun of polish people in the jokes. Polish people were looked at as being dumb. Did you hear about the polack who locked his family in the car? Yeah, it took him a week to figure out how to get them out! Stuff like that.
This is season 2 of All in the family, this is a flash back episode. In the first episode of the series, Mike and Gloria are already married and the polish and meat head jokes are well established in the first episode.
I do not know when, but Archie will be calling his Meathead by not so nice slang of Polish people. Years/episodes later, when Meathead and Gloria come back in guest episodes, I remember there is one episode that Archie sides with Meathead and not his daughter. So, touching. Did you notice, all the troubles in America can be said of today. Some 50 years later. I believe, the real Mike/Rob does have the same political beliefs he portrays in the show.
In the mid-70's, All In the Family, The Jeffersons and Maude were in the top 5 television shows. Two made fun of bigotry, one featured a black family, and the other a strong woman figure. All 3 came from All In The Family. Then rounding out the top 5 was Chico and The Man feature a Latin comic. It's worth a ponder.
I'm 60 yrs old so I remember the 1970s. It was in vogue to make fun of Polish people back then, tons of Polish jokes etc. Not saying it was right but there it is.
Norman Lear created this and other wonderful, very different, needed tv shows back then. He took a lot of risks that worked. All in the Family gained popularity more in the summer during reruns than in the regular season. I'm assuming the first season. Rob Reiner is fantastic as Mike . He's directed and acted in so many great movies. I occasionally see him as a guest on the news talking about the same things his character did in All in the Family. Same issues going on today! His dad, Carl Reiner was hilarious too. He created and stared in The Dick Van Dyke show in the 60s. He and another great actor and director of comedy, Mel Brooks, were best friends. Mel is still among us at 96.
Norman Lear didn't create this, he produced it. This was an American version of a British T.V. show "til death do us part" Archie Bunker was originally called Alf Garnet in the U.K. original. Fun fact.
The reason why they were looking at him like he was homeless is because he was. He literally had the nerve and lack of pride to move in with them and then argue with the man of the house.
Nope, that is indeed Rob Reiner, the same actor who portrays Mike/Michael “Meathead” Stivic throughout the entire 9 season series. Nowadays, Reiner is very active trying to hold Mr. Trump and his cronies to account for their actions. Also, I don’t know if FG creator Seth MacFarlane got the idea for Lois and Peter from Edith and Archie, though that’s a thing I’ve never thought to possibly connect. I do know, however that the recently deceased Norman Lear (at 101, GG and RIP, sir 😢) co-created the show with Bud Yorkin, and it was based on the Britcom (“British sitcom”) _’Till Death Do Us Part_ , which started in 1965 and ran until 1975 on the UK’s BBC1 channel. There were 2 AitF pilots, one in 1968, one in 1969. Both starred Carroll O’Connor as Archie and Jean Stapleton as Edith, but their surname/last name was Justice, not Bunker in those pilots. Additionally, 2 different actresses and 2 different actors portrayed Gloria, whereas the actor who was Gloria’s love interest was named Richard, and D’Urville Martin played George and Louise Jefferson’s son, Lionel.
Hahaha, yes, that is the same Michael "Meathead" Stivic actor (Rob Reiner). He just has a beard. As for Archie's sloppy tie, he was fighting Edith on wearing a tie cos he felt there was no need for it just to meet the "loser" his little girl was bringing home, and Mike showed up before they finished.
All in the Family is great because it is like a parody showing how ridiculous racism is. I saw other reactors that couldn’t understand why Archie was saying such racist things but it was a “character/role” to show that racism is real. Thanks for watching and reacting. It was a great show.
Archie and Michael could carry this conflict for years. Archie had periodic moments of awakening as his prejudices happened to affect him personally, but he never became "woke".
As far as Family Guy, goes, I never thought about them being inspired by All in the Family, but I can see that now. (And it is the same guy throughout the series) I like that Carrol O'Connor, who plays Archie was in reality a liberal, and nothing like the guy he played on TV. Ron Reiner, who played Micheal\Meathead went on to be a world class director. (Spinal Tap, Princess Bride, Stand By Me, A Few Good Men, and on and on and on ...) His dad was Carl Reiner, creator of "The Dick Van Dyke Show"
Archie and Edith are sort of a protype for Peter and Lois. Look at how Family Guy starts with Peter and Lois sitting at the piano just like All In the Family, but everything goes over the top pretty fast. That is a metaphor for Family Guy. But your are correct, the similarity is absolutely on purpose.

The show got so popular that there where posters and t shirts made saying Archie Bunker for President of the Us. I am pretty sure Rob Reiner was the only meathead.😊😊
It's always funny in sitcoms when the folks meet the partner for the first time, Mike was cool, he always stood up to Archie when he felt passionate about something, such a funny slice of family life "All In The Family" was back in the 70s 🙏

At the time, the "Polish Jokes" (as dumb) were very common (as much as "blonde women jokes" as dumb).
FYI, in the 60's and 70's Polish Jokes were quite common. Not something you hear any more(thankfully).
Archie was very vocal about politics and raxe which made the show. When the jeffersons enter the game it takes off
Nope, that is indeed Rob Reiner, the same actor who portrays Mike/Michael “Meathead” Stivic throughout the entire 9 season series.
Yes, and Rob Reiner is just as ignorant today as his character was in the show 50+ years ago.
"he's in his chair, he's in his chair"Makes hearing it like a proud parent that your starting to grasp things.
ya he be da one and only head of meat in All da Family just got older like me did. I literally turned around and became ancient. 🤣 the jokes on me!
Same guy playing Michael (Meathead) lol. It's Rob Reiner. After All in the Family, he went on to become a really famous director/producer.
All in the Family is great because it is like a parody showing how ridiculous racism is. I saw other reactors that couldn’t understand why Archie was saying such racist things but it was a “character/role” to show that racism is real. Thanks for watching and reacting. It was a great show.
Meathead is very likely THE most iconic nickname for any individual in a sitcom, ever.
Archie and Michael could carry this conflict for years. Archie had periodic moments of awakening as his prejudices happened to affect him personally, but he never became "woke".
As far as Family Guy, goes, I never thought about them being inspired by All in the Family, but I can see that now. (And it is the same guy throughout the series)
I like that Carrol O'Connor, who plays Archie was in reality a liberal, and nothing like the guy he played on TV.
Ron Reiner, who played Micheal\Meathead went on to be a world class director. (Spinal Tap, Princess Bride, Stand By Me, A Few Good Men, and on and on and on ...) His dad was Carl Reiner, creator of "The Dick Van Dyke Show"
Well the theme song is almost the same and obviously based on the all in the family theme song.
Wojohoitz was a polish character on the Barney Miller show it had a few polish jokes in the early episodes
Already mentioned in the Comments but I'll mention it again, Norman Lear was the main writer and creator of this show.
This was actually a "flashback" episode.
That's Mike (meathead) he shaved just before he married Gloria
Gotta watch the whole show from beginning to end!
(this comment is for BrittReacts) - i found what you were looking for on TH-cam - "All In The Family / Sammys visit / season 2 episode 21 / full episode" .... TH-cam edited out the bad words
The Polish were looked down upon back in the day. The discrimination was as logical as any other.
In Living Color did a spoof of this show with several skits called All Up in the Family that you would enjoy!!
in those days the Polish were considered not so smart and there was a great prejudice against them.
Mike is a pollock that is the joke from back then
*In Living Color (All in the Family)*
That chair is now in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC ! He is from Poland in other words a derogatory term a “pollock”! I do not think that though!
This tv show was the epitome of social programming.
You ought to research the one where archie steals mike and gloria's son to try to have him baptize behind their back
Wonderfull reaction, brings back memories my parents never missed an episode and back then most houses had 1 tv so I saw most of them. The show got so popular that there where posters and t shirts made saying Archie Bunker for President of the Us. I am pretty sure Rob Reiner was the only meathead.😊😊
Fun fact: Harrison Ford was offered the role of Mike "Meat Head" Stivic.
It's always funny in sitcoms when the folks meet the partner for the first time, Mike was cool, he always stood up to Archie when he felt passionate about something, such a funny slice of family life "All In The Family" was back in the 70s 🙏
The Polish in the US faced a lot of racism back in the 60s and 70s.
This episode was in the middle of the hippie movement which the conservatives saw as communist sympathizers. Archie was a devout conservative!
No it’s the same actor Rob Reiner who is the very famous Director today.
Yes that is the original Mike
Remember, it was the Allies who betrayed Poland after WW2 when Stalin was allowed to take over the country.
Meathead is the nickname of michael stivic played by rob reiner.
People used to constantly make pollock jokes. They were always about how dumb they were.
Another 🔥 reaction
Yes, same guy, Rob Reiner.
