The clip when Archie and Michael get locked in a basement (drunk) is an incredible example of Carol O'Connor's acting ability, and gives some insight as to how Archie feels about why he thinks some of the things he thinks. It's pretty powerful. I think the clip is called "Archie talks about his father"

@bellac1451 The other HILARIOUS basement-based episode ("Archie in the Cellar") was when an eventually VERY drunk Archie turns around and thinks he's letting Jesus in to save him from being locked out, and it was just a blue-collar contractor who happens to be black. Archie's reaction and him saying, "The Jeffersons' was right" was PURE GOLD!
P.S. Glad to see Gen Z and Millennial fans like you discovering what MANY, MANY people (incl mysrlf) call the greatest sitcom in TV history: AITF.
One of the funniest bits they do is about how you put on your Sox and shoes.

Wish I could jump in a time-machine to 1974 and show the cast and crew your reaction from 50 years in the future! They'd be amazed how their show resonates with a 21st-century New Yorker.
Inflation at the time when this show was filmed was around 8%, much higher than now. Also there was the Middle Eastern oil embargo which caused gas prices to almost double and scarce. The economic problems then in the Nixon era were as bad if not worse, than now.
The teapot thing he was referring to was the Teapot Dome scandal under the Harding administration. The Secretary of State at the time leased oil reserves in Wyoming at extremely low prices to private oil companies without going through the required bidding process

I don't know what that is on the wall . . . but I know in the 70s, Copper decor was very popular. In fact, my Mom's friend used to sell it (it was like going to a Tupperware party). We had a bit of it decorating our 70s house while I was growing up, LOL!
I'm old enough to remember "All in the Family." This was the most popular show on TV for the entire time that it aired.
You know, Britt, I always enjoy your reactions, and, when you're REALLY engaged, your insights. When I was in Germany from 1986-2002, my then wife introduced me to the German version of the show ("Ein Herz und eine Seele"/"One Heart and One Soul"). Took me a good 5 or 6 years to really understand it AND understand Germany enough to like it as much as I did. Yet, like you are saying .. Times never change. We go through the same thing again and again. Then the 20-30 year olds start picking up on it, but don't really "See" it until they're 40. By our 50s and 60s we've gotten to the point where we totally understand what "Roger Murtaugh"/Danny Glover meant when he said, in "Lethal Weapon" ; I'm too old for this Shit.

One of the running jokes throughout he series was that Archie always criticized Mike (Meathead) for his huge appetite so when Mike flung open the refrigerator door and shoved Archie outta the way it just feeds into that running joke that nothing will stand between Meathead and food.
This show tackled everything. Usually in a comedic fashion, but they also did serious issues, too. There was an episode where Gloria was SA'ed while walking home from work, having taken a shortcut that she shouldn't have, then some time later, a 2-part episode showed Edith get nearly SA'ed in her own home after letting in a man claiming to be a police detective, meanwhile Archie and everyone was right next door setting up a surprise party for Edith. The Gloria episode is referenced in the Edith episodes, and while not mandatory viewing to appreciate the Edith episodes, it definitely gives more context, knowing how Gloria handled it ,and how Edith handled it, with Gloria's help.
If you ever check out those episodes/clips, brace yourself cos it's HEAVY stuff.
One of the funniest episodes is when Edith answers an ad in a magazine thinking she is making new pen pals, but didn't realize the ad was in a swingers' magazine for those kind of "get-togethers". Hilarity ensure when Edith invites the couple over.

1973. These Clips are 50 years ago. Nixon was in office. Right before Carter in 1976
Rob Riener isn't acting, he still believe what he said in the 70's when he did the show to this day. I was in high school when this show came out.
Ironically what Archie said about inflation is screwed up but correct, to many goods and no buyers makes the price for an item come down.

Archie accidently gets locked in his own cellar and starts drinking while waiting on someone to come get him out. Norman Lear (the shows producer) said in an interview that they thought they would get taken off the air after that one. Thats probably the funniest episode EVER of any sitcom ever.🤣🤣

in the early 70's everyone ws stricking, everyone was losing their jobs. archie and edith are providing a home to their daughter and son in law newlyweds while son in law is ging to college full time..we all laughed our heads off watching this when i was in high school. you will end up falling in love with archie and all of them..
My mom had 3 copper Jello molds hanging on the wall.. She got them free with some laundry soap. They did stuff like that back in the 40's.

My step dad was a carbon copy of Archie. Outside a bigot but inside someone with a heart.
He did not lie he forgot to tell the truth?! 🤔. 😵😂😂😂. Yet...there are other times when Archie is so sweet to Edith...you get to see how he really feels. 🤗. When things get rough in life he's always there for her!
The accents were true to the time period. I was born around the time this show came out but, yeah, the stereotypical "Brooklyn" accent thing was, and still is, among us in the older folk and the gen that grew up with it. You walk into a neighborhood deli or pizzeria you'll hear, "Hey, Chief!" or "Hey, Boss!" "What ya want on that pie?" Could be a thing from the old days that they kept for the tourists. Now that I think about it, the new gen sounds more like Rocky from Phili than from any of the original accents. But you, Britt, probably know better since you were born there. Love your channel so much!
Artie's actually a really good man He's a really sweet person you just have to watch it all the way through instead of little tidbits especially after either passes away and then there's an offshoot called Archie's place RG is a good man hard to tell from a little tidbits but deep down inside

A lot of times, inflation happens from outside influences. The 70s was mostly from an oil embargo in the middle east.

What we are going through right now is a repeat of the late 70’s and early 80’s financially. We put an actor in the White House before that he fixed the California economy as governor 1967-71. You aren’t paying rent to stay in my house you can leave MY HOUSE.

Britt, you should watch some of the episodes that include George and Louise (“Weezie”) Jefferson. They move in next door to the Bunkers. Archie and George are the same people on opposite sides of life.
Britt, it just occurred to me that since you like this and especially because you really liked Key & Peele, I would love to see you react to some classic stand-up comedy by the comedian / actor Patton Oswalt.
I think one reason why I liked Key & Peele so much when it came out, and I had watched Obama Anger Translator on TH-cam prior to the show even starting and so I was a huge fan from the very first episode, but I think one reason why I liked it so much is because I was already a big fan of Patton Oswalt, and, like Key & Peele, Patton we'll go there all the way, nothing is off-limits to him and yet he's this incredibly intelligent and compassionate and witty and lovable human being. But he pulls no punches and he's funny as hell.
To me I think the best entry point is his iconic bit called Famous Bowls about KFC. And it kicks off one of his comedy albums.
Physics for Poets is also one that just anybody could drop into and immediately see why this guy was so funny. It's in an academic setting.
But because of your Christian background, there is a great animation of him analyzing a Christmas song, and I love it so much. It's endlessly funny but it talks about religion and all kinds of things and it pushes the boundaries, but it all makes sense. I laugh because my mom, knowing full well what my dad would say, asked him about re-doing their vows. He said, "If I didn't do it right the first time, I'm not doing it again."
I think my dad used Archie as a role model! No matter how illogical it was, it was his house, his rules and his opinions.
I watched this as a kid, but really didn’t get the political side. Watching again, with you as a narrator really makes me understand why this show was so popular.

"Stagflation" (economic stagnation combined with high inflation) of the 1970s. Difference today (history never exactly repeats itself) inflation was only temporary (caused globally by the Covid pandemic and the recession and supply shortage inflation it spawned everywhere) versus 1970s decade-long stagnation and inflation due to the OPEC oil embargos that created doubling and redoubling gas prices and long gas lines.

The recession of the 70s would blow people minds today. We could only buy gas an alternate days . To drive anywhere that wasn’t absolutely necessary everyone would pitch in . My mom would say to us You want heat well- heat or eat . All of us kids worked doing odd jobs to have anything . We folded boxes at the sandwich shop to earn a sub & soda. I see people have so much and think they are so poor. Just boggles the mind.
"Past Presidents hv done worse." I read book abt 1920s Presidents (Coolidge & Harding). A part talks abt (unsure how much is 100% fact) of Harding's infamous Poker / Drinking parties at the White House (after hrs.). Legend has it the morning after 1 party, Mrs. Harding found one of the "dancing ladies" passed out in a closet. Again, unsure if 100% true. What I DO believe is "past Presidents hv done worse." Goes to show us "the more things change, the more they stay the same."

While they are fictional shows, All in the Family and Archie Bunker's Place, provide a great view of economic history, of the of 1970s to early 1980s and how that time period affected the American middle and lower-middle class.

We love and miss you, Carol O'Connor. Surprisingly, one of his favorite roles of mine is one of final his movie roles was Marty O'Reilly in Return to Me. Want to do a Movie Reaction, that one will touch your heart and it's an amazing movie of loss, love, family and memorializing love. Plus, it has a great Gorilla in it. C'mon, who doesn't love Gorilla's!?!?!?! A movie for the entire family.

Have you ever seen "Good Times" with JJ? This was about a family in the projects and came on after Archie so then you got the Black Archie on that show. Janet Jackson played Penny when she was a kid. I think people nowadays would be shocked at the humor.

I mean that is actually what the fed are doing. Not the increasing production part just the increasing unemployment part. Increasing production in a key resource like i dunno oil would decrease prices for sure....but why would they want to do that 😊

For Nixon, the VP under Dwight (Ike) Eisenhower gave the V sign after speeches.
for his time frame more likely associated with V for Victory from WWII than the peace sign from the Vietnamese era.
The victory sign is another positive meaning associated with raising two fingers up. It is made by raising the index and middle fingers in a V shape, while the palm faces outward. This gesture has its origins in World War II when British Prime Minister Winston Churchill adopted it as a symbol of victory.
I still strram a couple of episodes a week of this show when I want a good laugh.
We are still dealing with the same issues now as the show talks about because no one has had the political will to change it. IMHO.
