I feel like a similar thing is going on in a lot of genres right now, with many indie games coming along and trying new things in a genre, but also aren't tied down by the need to make a quick buck. The Monster Taming genre, games like Pokemon, Digimon, and Shin Megami Tensei, has been getting a lot of unique indie ideas from games like Monster Sanctuary which has collectible creatures in a 2d Metroidvania, to Nexomon Extinction having custom game modes available from a menu as well as allowing you to bypass progression blockers in numerous ways. And then there's been the return of beat em ups', with the new TMNT game, Streets of Rage 4, River City Girls, which yes are all older brands, but they're being made by indie teams. But also there's FPS developments, such as BPM, and other fps rhythm games. And there's a lit of indie 3d platformers coming out a lot recently. Just saying, don't always look at the biggest tree, sometimes take care of the saplings.
I HIGHLY suggest looking into Two Strikes. It’s featured at 1:33, and it’s such a cool game to play. I’ve been following development for a long time now, and it’s been so exciting seeing the game come along and grow.
The truth is, the idea for Motionsickness was born as a reaction to Fantasy Strike, but I didn't want the game to be fully unplayable, so I came up with the idea of the three styles. Sometimes there are players who tell me that they like the fact that thanks to B style, the game is really accessible to newcomers, but has a high skill ceiling due to the whole idea of sacrificing damage for consistency (+ X-treme mode). I am glad you found that interesting enough to cover it!

It's more card game than fighting game, but it's a really interesting take on how to make a genre hybrid with the fighting game as one of its two genres.
Aerial Raver is basically the dev taking one of the most random and barely not nauced enough mechanic from Tasunoku vs Capcom where you get damage boosts the higher you take your combo and how all air combos are called Aerial Raves lmao. The whole community collectively went ???????????? when we learned that vertical height affects your damage lmao. This game feels like a macrocosm interpretation of that one mechanic.
Some of these titles do look pretty cool. It's always nice to see indie stuff for fighting games and platformers since they get creative or are at least visually interesting.

However the idea of an open world fighting game gives me a sense of more like a combo based Beat Them Up open world, like Yakuza. I think I'll add in a small idea I had for a fighting game, so basically imagine a game like dbfz but instead of spark you choose a 4th character (that is probably confined to a few master type characters) that has buffed up stats, can't use assists, and only comes in once a 3rd character dies. This isn't the most creative or insane fighting game mechanic but I think it would be cooler than seeing some make a sparking or lvl 3 x-factor comeback
The likes of Fraymakers, Terrordrome: Reign of the Legends, Cereal Killiaz, & even GigaBash to name a bunch are making waves into the genre with ease!!!

I've had an idea for an RPG/Fighting Game hybrid (think FF2/3 SNES style, but where random encounters are fighting game matches) since I was like 12 (aka 25 years ago). Seems like you could easily have story driven game with RPG-esque character mechanics that replace the stop and go style of RPG battle with actual matches. Surprised it's never been done, let alone done by a major studio in a AAA title.
I was looking for 3D indie fighting games. The only one I know is Schwarzerblitz, which was the previous project of the creator of Motionsickness. It has a story mode and interesting things, so I would recommend you check this one out :)

I don't have any definite information but I am kind of hoping it has co Op and online competitive gameplay mode. The game draws a lot from Absolver.
If I can shoutout another one. Y'all know about Sonic The Fighters. What if I told you there's a fan game that it's like that but SOOOO much better? Look up Sonic Smackdown ASAP. He even put in Balan recently and he looks busted af

I’ve rewatched the segment about open world fighters then going into that pixel one multiple times and I still don’t quite see how it relates to the idea of an open world fighter? Especially when you show absolver,an actual open world fighter, on screen. A lot of these games look cool but the art direction on many is abysmal.

Soul Calibur and DFO are kinda open world? Soul Calibur has an old school map with random encounters.
