- The Stars and Stripes Forever | John Philip Sousa
Featuring 70 U.S. Navy Band musicians and recorded at their homes
“Hurrah for the flag of the free. May it wave as our standard forever.”
We honor #MemorialDay weekend with our NATIONAL MARCH, John Philip Sousa’s The Stars and Stripes Forever, recorded at home by 70 U.S. Navy musicians. #MemorialDay #InThisTogether
When they started singing I got serious goosebumps, that was amazing.
Same
I never realised before that the song actually had (official!) lyrics. As kids, my brothers and I ad lib-ed our own words to it, relevant to the situation at hand.
not an american so I never knew there was signing and it was amazing.
Same
Me too!! I actually got teary eyed! What a surprise!!!
Imagine being the cymbal guy’s neighbor
Looooool
Or the timpani, ha
Or the bass drum. Lol.
one word. piccolo.
nah piccolo beats it
the one guy that clapped for the piccolos is me
They were so in tune...🤩
Dude the piccolos killed it!
They executed it damn near perfectly (excluding the tempo issue which probably wasn't their fault), but when you play piccolo in a marching band with at least 10 piccolos for 4 years, and play Stars and Stripes all 4 years.. it gets irritating. I can't stand the sound of a piccolo anymore. Sorry for the mini rant
Victoria Bridgewater me an flute / piccolo player👁👄👁
Thank you for your service...and the spectacular performance!
Imagine having enough money to buy a full set of timpanis
It kind of looks as though some, if not most of these are recorded on base, like in the instrument storage areas, or one of their music rooms.
At first I thought that too, but then I realized that they are active duty musicians, and although recorded separately, most(at least the bigger instruments) probably don't own or take home to practice.
I can’t get a good view, but they look like nice gigging drums similar to my timpani. What’s more interesting is that there is timpani on the recording at all, because scholars generally agree Sousa didn’t write timpani parts for his marches.
Trust me....your tax dollars paid for that timpani.
David Hunt They may be active duty but they are professional musicians so most of them likely own their own instruments.
Timpani is plural by itself. No "s".

That by their might and by their right
It waves forever."

damn man those chicks playing the flute are experts , anyways what instrument is that at 2:00 , the red one ?? I've never seen that before
@@sinabagherisarvestani8924 that's a bassoon.. a very common instrument in an orchestra setting.
@@MaestroSong its can't be that common since its my first time hearing the term " Bassoon " but its looks like a giant flute , its like a flute on steroids , I've never seen one before
@@MaestroSong looks cool , I've never seen one before , looks like a flute .
How have I gone 31 years and not known that this ever had any lyrics? I've never heard it performed that way.
i was going to say the same thing! but 30 years, haha.
I feel like I knew it had lyrics from being in JROTC in high school or performing with my national guard band once, but I always forget until moments like this
Hurrah for the flag of the free
May it wave as our standard forever
The gem of the land and the sea
The banner of the right
Let tyrants remember the day
When our fathers with mighty endeavor
Proclaimed as they marched to the fray
That by their might and by their right it waves forever
I’ve got significantly less years but I had no idea either - does anyone know whether the lyrics are from Sousa or if they were written later on?
@@lameborghini6980 They were written later on Sousa made his own lyrics.
My brother was a Navy band musician. He played Memorial Day concerts. He became a music teacher and led the kids in the school band marching down the street. Anchors Away from brother, the Army vet.
GOD BLESS your brother. I always admire and honor military men.
Thank you for your service!
Amen
🙏❤🙏🤍🙏💙🙏
I've only known the last part without lyrics and have played that part only before in the band.
This is absolutely wonderful to hear everyone performing together again. I'm sure everyone absolutely loved yo be "together" again. Thank you for your service to our country. ⚓🇺🇸⚓🇺🇸⚓🇺🇸⚓🇺🇸⚓

Weird, I can't see anyone in this video...anyone else with the same problem?
I just see floating heads playing instruments
Wierd glitch man

A brilliant use of tax payer money. Don’t you think?
If that doesn’t make your pride swell and put a tear in your eye, then you’re not human. Thank you for that isolated morale boost.
If that doesn't make you swell and put a tear in your eye, then you're just not an American patriot.
There are other countries, other people and other political views on this earth.
Please consider them/us, too
Why would it bring a tear to my eye? I'm not trying to sound rude
L!nus C. Nobody asked
If that isnt the most arrogant American sentence, then I don't know what is
@@nikn1250 Well, not directly. Robert Hume stated, that if I am not gonna swell of pride and if my eye is not full of tears, I am not a human.
But I am
And please consider, that you are not alone on this earth, and that everybody is equal, but not the same
1:52 the saxophone guy with his little clap aww 🥺 we need to keep him safe guys!!
The piccolo snippet in this piece is something fantastic and unparalleled in the entire repertoire of world music.
I'm a Japanese bass clarinet player.
I've played "The stars and stripes forever" many times.
Let’s do our best together.
Bravi💓💓💓
I just started playing!! I bet you're really good at it too :) have a good day my friend

That poor dog. It must be paralysed by the tume she played it...
Dead?!😅
The amount of reps do you half to do make it where your dog sleeping
The coordination that had to be doing is so amazing

Absolutely Awesome 🇺🇸
The couch pup added just the right touch :)
That was a suspiciously unreactive couch pup. Just lying there, ignoring a piccolo playing right beside the couch... haha.
@@Fleetwing1627 which indicates he's heard his mom play many times before. He's just waiting for mealtime. LOL
I just want to understand how the dog didn't even move during Piccolo's solo...
When they started singing, I cried.
明らか自宅っぽいのにティンパニとかハープとかあってすごすぎて笑った
演奏も最高
I don’t know about anyone else but I got the chills once they started singing
This song makes me feel patriotic for a country I don't even live in

Im from Mexico, and I absolutely love american marches and bands
Oh, man! But I am from Russia and absolutely in love with Mexican music, food and womens. But, I think columbiano also very good...
I currently work at and have been working there for over 7 years. The day I can finally quit I will be playing this song.
Beautiful. Every time I hear Stars and Stripes forever it stirs in me very strong emotions, to the point of tears. I love this country. PLEASE let us stand together like the human race we are!

The piccolo part was kick ass! And those are the most decorated barracks/on-post housing I have ever seen.
Yes, the piccolo part is the best part of this!
The song actually gets good at this part 0:01 and to the end
Remember, girls are temporary, but Stars and Stripes are forever
There's always that one AH.
welcome to enclave radio its your president Eden speaking
Nailed it! Terrific job all!!
Completely made me cry and I rarely if ever do that. Confession, I did play in marching band at Brigham Young Universty.
Were the piccs rushing or was that just me?
They were. But the strange thing is that the Piccolos were in sync with each other just not with the rest of the group. They were rushing equally.
I wondered, but the play was good and the overall quality just increased to the end; a real gem
Probably has something to do with the lack of a conductor in person. haha. Impressive performance nonetheless.
yes! it’s rare to hear the piccs and clarinets on the same tempo
I thought so too - but whoever edited this video could’ve easily fixed that, so it must’ve been intentional?
BRAVO!!!!
SaltyTubers: Exactly!
Thank you, I love to listen to you. Utterly fantastic musicians. Go Navy!!!
Excellent! Good stuff. Love the traditional orchestra arrangement augmented by the solid choir. Well done!
Made me tear up and put a lump in my throat. Seriously talented musicians. Bravo!!
Good job. A trombonist I knew switched to bass trombone because we were short of sousas that year. He blew our two sousas away!
星条旗よ永遠なれ とてもよき!!!
If that doesn't get your heart going, you're probably dead.
One of my favorite military songs and haven’t heard it in a while
This is one my all time favorites; Marcia Carolus Rex. This march is dedicated to the Swedish King Carl XII, one of the greatest kings in Swedish history. Here performed at the courtyard of the Royal Palace in Stockholm by the Swedish Army Band.

I can't get enough of those piccs in The Stars and Stripes!
Bravo. Two thumbs up. Liked the dog.
Just perfect and wonderful on this Memorial Day. Thank you so much.
Tamee Marie Purdy And lets remember that 100,000 have died due to people like you and your incredible selfishness. This isn’t over yet. There are so many seniors and at risk people who cannot even go to a grocery store now that we have reopened the country because you won’t wear a mask to protect others.
@Tamee Marie Purdy i can promise you that nobody cares that you're an america. Sky
@Tamee Marie Purdy: Would you care to be more specific, so we don't misunderstand your comment?
@Tamee Marie Purdy you're probobly not racist buuuuut 😂😂😂😂
Me sitting in my room smiling like an idiot cause I play the picc
Me sitting in my room squealing at the piccs because the sound of piccs is soooo cute. I invented the words . They mean "that's cute" or "that's glinty". I have synesthesia (I hear colors, shapes, and patterns) and I think the sound of piccs is glinty. Too bad my lungs can't handle wind instruments. I do play the organ, though, which I looove. My three favorite instruments are pipe organ, oboe, and piccolo.
@@claireforestgreenorgangeek7882 that's epic bro
Wonderful 👏👏👏👏 with love for all from Chile🇨🇱🇨🇱🇨🇱
I don't know how they all stay on timing but that was GREAT! Thank you, God bless you.
I assume that they all have headphones because they're either listening to a metronome or the piece itself and playing along. Then someone compiled the audio tracks into one and voila
NotSoHandyTim I think that they each made an individual recording, and put them all together, because it would almost be impossible to do professional group music in something like a zoom meeting. At least, that’s what my music teacher said.
Crispy Nuggets Yeah it would basically be impossible because everyone has different internet speeds. Aside from cutting in and out if the connection gets unsteady, there's usually a delay that you don't notice until you and whoever is on the other end try to do something simultaneously
Yep, they all have probably have a metronome track or conductor video... so major kudos to the editor who put this together!!!! Then again, that wouldn't explain the one guy who clapped for the piccolos... so maybe they have figured out a way to perform more "together." 🤔 Anyway, PROFOUNDLY AWESOME!!!!! ⚓💖🎶⚓💖🎶⚓💖🎶
Imagine being the harp player of the US Navy Band -- Poseidon would blush. This was great (and the piccolo was tight -- go woodwinds!). Thank you!
👍piccs👍 my third favorite instrument. Love it love it love it! It's a sweet tweet.
Has to be the one time in all of history four piccolos played in tune together😅 I needed this!!!
On behalf of picc players everywhere....thank you for the quick applause from the sax player. Don't know how the picc player got her dog to sit thru it without howling! My dogo would be as far away as possible after the first note. Really, really miss live concerts. Please all of you stay safe.
Congrats to picc players everywhere.
My favorite instruments are pipe organ, oboe, and picc.
the precise tonging for those low brass players! i can only wish
This was amazing especially the piccolos.
Go piccs!👍
Can we appreciate how that one percussionist has a whole darn tympani set in his house?!
I LOVE PICOLLO......REALLY....
So do I. Organ, oboe, and piccolo are the best instruments ever.
You can't get anymore Americana than this piece of music.
that one trombone player that didnt blink
You don't have to be in the military to enjoy this video. I'm a civilian and I love The Stars and Stripes Forever.
Oh yeah, brings tears to my eyes!
They should show this on EVERY TV Channel and play it on every radio station !!! This is what America is all about. >
Fabulous! God bless you all and God bless America!

Those piccolos in the quartet part were AMAZING!!! I’m a flute player and that truly was gorgeous.
I am a flute player too!
This is one of the most beautiful patriotic song a nation has
Beautiful...just beautiful! Such amazing talent! Thank you!
素晴らしいです!!感動しちゃいました!! from Japan
Even after playing this 100’s of times, I still get goosebumps!
Eu amo J.P. Sousa🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟💓💓💓💓💓
As a piccolo player myself, I wonder how all four of then stayed in in tune
I don't play the piccolo (I don't have the lung power for wind instruments) but it's one of my most favorite instruments to hear.
#1 pipe organ
#2 oboe
#3 piccolo
I do play the organ and I love it. I'd like to hear organ and piccolo together sometime.
ABSOLUT FANTASTIC 👍👍👍👍 🎼🎵🎶🎵🎵🎶🎵🎶🎶 Best wishes from Germany 😀
I did not notice that dog! He's a cute puppy!
At 2:37 the woman playing clarinet at the bottom looks like playing snare drum at the same time.
They are all at home without an audience and someone still clapped for the piccolo solo. Its just a part of the piece now
Go piccs! 👍👏
AMERICAN HISTORY RULES I'M TRUE PATRIOT I LOVE MY COUNTRY believe me i actually act like this i have a American flag on my ford truck
This reminds me of the commercial where "I told 2 friends, they told 2 friends and so on, and so on....!" It is awesome. A tribute to their talent, and today's technology!
Absolutely wonderful, musically as well as spiritually, my salute!
I would stand outside my neighbors house and play that piccolo all day
Come to my apartment building and play the piccolo out on the front lawn (I wouldn't mind it indoors but it might be too much for my neighbors)
It’s good to see Senior Chief Adam Tyler singing again.
