- Finale from our 2017 Star-Spangled Spectacular, featuring 94 piccolos playing John Philip Sousa's "The Stars and Stripes Forever".
Jeff Gershman conducting. Piccolo soloists: Margaret Shin Fischer, Kathy Johnson, Tim Hagen and 91 others. (We set the World Record last year with 189 piccolos.)
I love how the brass is louder than 94 piccolos
Harrison Dixon a couple of the trumpets had mics. On top of that high frequencies don't travel as long/far as lower frequencies, and trumpets and trombones are also built to louder
I don’t like you
They should have added 76 trombones and 101 cornets.
@@Ace1King1 and 100 more tubas for the lowbrass feature lmao
Yeah, complete with horrific cracking. Blast. Splat.

Me: *shudders* I don’t want to imagine why tuning was like.
I'm thinking it was every man for himself. Try to survive the song. :)

It's the old joke: How to get two piccs to play in tune? Kill one.
When 76 trombones and 110 cornets weren’t enough
well, it clearly needed to reaaaally be the big parade.
they definitely caught the morning sun
HAHAHAHA I've been grinning at all the comments but this one made me actually shout with laughter
Don't forget the rows and rows of the finest virtuosos
That’s trouble with a capital T, and that rhymes with P, and that stands for… Piccolos!

*Lord save us all*
Dont judge a book by its cover mate
I'm still really confused as to why there are two different performances melded into one video. Or did they play it twice at the concert? I'm just confused.
But thanks for including the five min link in your comment. I totally would have stopped the video before that and assumed everyone was playing along with a joke that I want getting.

They are for the little notes in the pauses of Arabic music
Sounded like 100 penny whistles...…. ;o)
As a drum major, I agree
Lol. So rip for that piccolo player in Kyoto Tachibana SHS Band. They always jump and move around while playin

94 Piccolo Players: "Hold My Beer"!
I’ve played the piccolo for 9 years and never in my life have I ever seen more than two play together
Through out my high school marching band, we swapped out all flute players with piccolo players. At one point, we had 10 piccolos. Flutes are lost on the field. No one can hear them.
@@Nymeria0 I've been playing piccolo for 4 years, and I've never played with any other piccolos!
@@hellothere9848 I’m not saying it was easy on the ears 😅😅😅 it was just how our marching band director feel. On our sectional practice days, we always opt to practice outdoor. If possible ear plugs.
@@Nymeria0 I've never used ear plugs, but I probably should 🤣
My high school band has 35 players and like 6 or 7 are piccolos
Finally somebody understands that Stars and Stripes should be a piccolopalooza (piccolopocolypse?). There should be 1000 more.
David Heald need to set a ridiculous world record for most piccolos being played at once
Adding 1000 more would be 1093 piccolos too many

I agree... it is one of the few music compositions with a dedicated piccolo portion.
Stars and Stripes Forever is THE best patriotic march, and this piccolo-ed version of it is SUPERB! Texas does everything right!
I’m sure most countries have their own patriotic marches. I’ll stick with Scotland the Brave - you know it’s a real match when the enemy regard the instrument (great highland bagpipes) as weapon of war.

I am a lifelong trombone player. I was never great, but I made it up to third chair Pennsylvania state band way way back in 2002. I cannot stress enough just how difficult a piece this is for a regular trombone. This speed is almost unheard of. This was sharp, crisp, and unbelievably well done. I swear before God that I actually teared up listening to it. Marvelous, amazingly well done, and please keep it up!
I’m a trumpeter and my lip was always putty by the end every time I played this song.
This piece does showcase trombones very well.
The clarinet 1 part for this song is SO HARD- I always hated playing this song lol

94 piccolos and still couldn't out blown by a trumpet
Ayrton Hockaday Yeah. It’s just too bad that trumpet couldn’t play in tune.
they couldn't out "blow" the trumpet but their sound surely pierces through
they sound like whistles
the trumpet was miced

This is amazing. I did not expect all of those "crowd" members to actually be the other 91 piccolo players. What a brilliant performance and bravo to everyone involved in putting it together👌❤
Wonderful! As a flutist, a mom, and a music teacher, I just about cried when I saw all those middle and high school kids getting this opportunity to be part of such an awesome, memorable experience! It was probably also pretty cool for the adults in the group, but for those kids! Yes! Thank you, Dallas Winds!

AS A FORMER PICCOLO PLAYER, I WAS MOVED TO TEARS BY THIS PRODUCTION!
Loved how in sync the trombones and tubas were with those fast staccato notes...sounded so clean. Also enjoyed the piccolo surprise. Well done, made me feel patriotic.
Have to do this with Rite of Spring with bassoons
Splodinate Kabloominate oh god no
YESSSSSSSS
Splodinate Kabloominate You’re a genius!

YEAAAH
Oh, that everyone could enjoy playing this march with a band....thrilling.
This must have sounded like a swarm of bees flying around in tune.
Yes but BEES have no sense of Rhythm.
With 94 piccolos im pretty sure they weren’t all in tune
With TWO piccolos I'm sure they weren't in tune.
When ever I hear these patriotic songs I never think of the "greatness" of the country...the "greatness" of its people...the "greatness" of its institutions. I think of the young kids,.... the "dog faces" (as they were called during WWII)... who fought and died for this country. These songs, at least in my mind, are a tribute to THEM!
I think about both.
Three of my friends (all were my flute section leaders over the course of three years) played picc during this performance. Loved seeing them do this!
No offence, but I only see three.....
I'm sure that's what many people said at first, including me. Stick with it to the end, when the rest of the piccolos enter. Outstanding!
I still prefer the tuba playing the piccolo solo.... less ear piercing and way more fun to play!!!
Anna can I borrow your piccolo?
Srishaan Iyengar Wtf I’m just seeing this. You ask me over TH-cam versus just texting me why?
Sometimes people ask what America still does best, or has the best of, and this is one answer. Stirring patriotic marches that fill hearts with pride, yet not with war or aggression; tunes that are perfect for a town's high school band on the 4th of July or a concert in a city's finest venue. I live just to the north, and we have nothing like this.
wow for once I can hear the piccolos
eyyyy you never sat next to one then!
@@ElfriedeRose Once you know how to listen for it, you can definitely hear it whenever it crops up. Being a piccolo or ex-piccolo player helps, though. Or having to sit next to the piccolo, lol. (Both a player and have had to sit next to one. Fun times when you're both at once and have to play a soft high E )
I've watched some marching bands with piccolos and they're really easy to hear
Wow,, THAT is the way it's supposed to be done. As a former flute/piccolo player, I appreciate this. Even more, my husband is a former trumpet player, two of my granddaughters are flute players, we have a sax player, a french horn player, and a tuba. So we have had a lot of fun with this piece over the years. Bravo, Dallas, bravo.
I didn’t even know this many people played piccolo
Now THAT'S how you smuggle in 91 pic's!!! If the trumpet player would just pull the growth, whatever it is, out of his horn this would be perfect 94 times over! Wow! What a great performance.
RIP the audience's ears
I would've gone deaf. XD
If it can't be from gunblasts and a drummer boy on the Contitution's gundecks, this is the best way to go deaf

Even when there are 94 pic. You could still hear the trumpets more😡
The magic Pillow pic is really loud regardless
A trumpet is designed to play louder and project farther than a little piccolo ever could
Lucky for anyone who listened to this
High frequences quickly dissipate in space. This is why trombones are so loud at long range. But 94 piccolo flutists could have made each other deaf.
The magic Pillow trumpet was miced and out of tune lol
What a great idea! Stars and Stripes is one of my favorite Sousa marches because of the piccolo solos. Most peoples don't even notice the piccolos. I actually got emotional and teary because of the awesomeness of this video.

I'm a proud Canadian flutist, so the only reason I am watching this video is because I wanted to see my people rise up against every other musician and enslave them for the purposes of an act of war. And guess what; they were successful.
America fucking blows.
When one has stood playing "The Stars and Stripes Forever" with tears of pride streaming down ones face you know what it IS to be an AMERICAN!
Do you feel that same pride when you hear the music of the country from which you originated?
Because until you are full-blooded First Nationals, you are here illegally.
I played the piccolo and just being around 8 was enough. 94 is suicide
The piccolos were great. They shouldn't be louder than the brass, you can definitely hear them over the brass. Great job, piccolos!!!!
According to the the parts listed on Hal-Leonard, your band would number at least 6615 if you were to keep the same ratio of piccolo to rest of band. ( Assuming one per part(other that tuba (x4))).
Where did you find this info? I’m curious
And depending on how many players you have. Our band has over 60 members currently. We play this song a lot. And there are about 2 to 4 piccolos.

My God, we come up with some of the best patriotic tunes of any nation, IMHO, And Sousa (the composer of S&SF?) was perhaps the greatest creative genius ever in this genre. These kinds of songs remind you that America, in spite of the hyperbole of the present Administration, has always been great in spite of her problems. And I loved the encore, with the prominent part played by the piccolos at the conclusion. Great stuff!!!
We?
@@djmotise Yes.
My father was a band director for over 30 years. He loved Sousa marches. I was a flautist/piccolo player. I played this many times but I doubt I ever played it that beautifully. When the 94 began to play I cried. It really moved me!

Bravo!
That is the greatest piece of band music ever composed and that band did a good job of playing it.
My favorite piece of music! Brings tears to my eyes every time i hear it! THE STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER!
I am a 66 year old man, and today is July 4th, 2022. I was sitting in my chair eating breakfast and wanted to listen to one of the greatest songs written by John Philip Sousa, and when the flag rolled down tears suddenly filled my eyes. Because I fear for this country and the Stars and stripes may not last forever. Unless we repent as a country and ask for God's forgiveness we are doomed to history as another once great country ruined by its own sin
Oh God, forgive us, relent and bring us back to you!
Relent, oh God my savior!
Honestly when that flag rolled down I almost teared up too
"If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land." 2 Chronicles 7:14 (ESV)
Sir, this is by far the best, most accurate comment I have read to describe our current, troublesome state of affairs. The sins that are being committed in this country are leading us down a path of no return. Great nations and civilization have fallen due to immorality, pride and the inability to seek forgiveness and repentance. Chief sin is the wonton, bloodlust extermination of the unborn. We are in for a terrible reckoning. I stand by my comment.
Amen!
I promised myself I wouldn't cry! Also played Tenor Trombone for my H.S. Band (a.k.a. HM3 "Doc"Johnson) listening to all those piccolos put chills down my spine!!! 🇺🇸😭💞

Awesome. Love this. I’m so proud of you all and proud to be an American.
I loved the unfurling of the American flag, and kudos to the string bass player. Again, excellent rendition of John Philip Sousa’s masterpiece!
Splendid, inspired! The piccolos evoke the pipes played by Revolutionary War infantry marching soldiers.
I am just now seeing this for the first time and it WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZINGLY AWESOME!! I am a VETERAN OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY AND A DIEHARD PATRIOT! I also played the trumpet 🎺 in my younger years and aboard the USS KAWISHIWI, AO 146 out of PEARL HARBOR, HAWAII. this was from 1/75-11/77, ALMOST 3 FULL YEARS! The STARS AND STRIPES is the MOST POPULAR REQUEST FOR ANY MILITARY BAND! And, it's because of the SOLO BY THE PICCOLO!! GOD BLESS THEM ALL!! It's one of the hardest instruments to play!
It is just beautiful! What a remarkable and powerful an energetic performance. God Bless every talented woman and man found on this stage. Thanks
