- After watching a Nick Agar demo I just had to try the Robert Sorby spiralling/texturing tool. I need a lot of practice but this is a brief example of what it can do. Hopefully, I can do better with more practice!! 😃😃

I’ve had mine for 2 years and love it. I use it a lot on the bottoms and inside bottom of my bowls.

Yes, the John Beaver was one of the best demos I have ever seen. I was amazed when I looked at the clock and realized two hours had elapsed. I usually get pretty antsy about an hour and a half into a demo.

😂🤣😂🤣 it used to be my practice to throw instructions in the garbage as soon as I opened up the box. I got tired of digging through the garbage finding the instructions so now I set them aside for a few days before I get rid of them! LOL! I am looking forward to the day when it becomes fun! I have one also. My best results have come with using the corner of the cutter at a slight angle rather than holding it at a right angle to the wood. I look forward to watching your embellishments develop.

Nice demo, Gord. Well shown how they work. Texturizing has definitely been something of interest to me since I learned about things like liming wax. One of these days those tools might make it to the top of the purchase list.

I've got the same setup, Gord, and every time I want to use it (seldom), I have to get out those instructions again. I have mixed results every time. I think it has great potential, I just wish I understood it, better. I will say, and I'm sure you know, outlining those patterns with a groove on each side really makes them stand out. Anyway, great instructional video and one I will refer back to next time I want to get fancy.

I am betting you will find one or two you like more than the others. I love doing the center swirl/flower when the bottom needs a little something. I was taught to hold the pressure to the count of five before pulling back. Tricky, but interesting is to hold in one place, then slowly skate at a steady speed.I labeled my test piece so I could repeat the ones I liked.
I haven’t done much with it yet, Valerie, but it is an interesting tool. The spiralling effects are really quite fascinating. I think I have a long way to go to really learn how to use this even a little bit but it’s going to be a fun learning curve just the same. Thanks for the input, Valerie. Thanks for watching!
I have the Simon Hope version, Gord: no tool rest and only two cutters. Really easy to use, and gives good effects when different felt tipped pens are applied. My first experiments were on pine, which gave good results, as did sycamore and Blue Atlas Cedar under different pressures. I would not expect your learning curve to be too steep, so enjoy some rimmed platters. You will find tremendous scope. Bernard.

Thanks for showing the tool. I’m at a point where I don’t want to take the chance of ruining my material with a tool like that, just using the gouge and skew gives me plenty of those opportunities. Ha!

Hi Gord. Great process for trying it out. I have that set for about a year. Can be frustrating. Even when you find success one time. Duplicating is another matter the next time! So many variables on how the tool reacts to end grain, side grain and wood types. Not at all comfortable yet attacking a nearly finished piece and finding out the tool has made a mess!
I think I’m in for a long learning curve, John. This could be one of the more difficult tools I have tried. Thanks for watching!

Yikes! I hadn't seen a new video in a week or so, and was going to write to commiserate on your bad back. But I saw that same Nick Agar demo, and now I know what you've been playing with. So I checked it out, and flipped at the price! I am going to have to go to WalMart and apply as a 'Greeter' to save up the pennies for that toy. :)

I have the tool as well. Cutting on flat is a cake walk compared to the outside curve. It’s all to do with the mathematical results of cutter size to object size. I have taken as little as a 1/16” off the piece and got the results I wanted and also removed that 1/16” and ruined the cut. Now take a bowl with varying circumferences and the problems are out of this world. I believe the tool is made more to sell than to use.
Yes, you explanation is key in understanding how to get a clean cut. The circumference matters!

Gord I have the same tool, and I believe the bevel of the wheel being used is suppose to be up. A little hard to tell from the video but it appears you are using it on the bottom. And as I’m typing this I see you flipped the wheel over. Spirals look cleaner cut with bevel up to me. Thanks for sharing your turnings
Thank you for the input, Paul. During his video Nick Agar said that the bevel should be leading into the wood. Maybe by saying that the bevel was on the top or the bottom I was being misleading. I don’t believe the camera angle really showed properly just what was going on with the bevel. I have a lot of practising to do to conquer the learning curve of this tool. It is a lot more difficult than it looks when in the hands of an expert like Nick Agar. Thanks for watching!
I’ve only used mine maybe a dozen times or so. My best results were on my son and DIL’s wedding goblets. I put a spiral on the stems, came out great if I say so myself! Wish I could post a pic here to show you. Need to remember to incorporate this tool on more turnings.

I have had the same kit for a while, it takes some time to get it sorted out , don’t give up . If I can figure out how to I will send you some photos , I like it on the rim of bowels.

Wow, I figured it out, Pete. I'm just going to look at the photos now. I might even figure out how to reply on there. Well, maybe not!!! 😃😃😃
Now get some gilders paste and fill in those spirals and textures to make those plain bland grains and really make the work pop. Note: make sure you seal the wood before gilding so the metalic paste can be cleaned off everything except the spirals and other designs you make.. Gold, Silver, Bronze, Copper and other metals are available.
You can also use one of those cheap bristle brushes after trimming the bristle length to about 3/4" to clean up the design and make borders at the inside and outside borders of the design with a point tool or a beading tool to bring out the pattern. The possibilities are endless.

A tool I have been wanting - but obviously it will take a lot of practice. Looks like a fairly hard wood that you used - was it a hard maple? Also appears that surface preparation "before" you use this is very important. Thanks for sharing - just one more thing for the wish list. Thanks again - Dennis
I am sure you are right about the surface preparation, Dennis. That’s not something I’m going to worry about very much until I get a better handle on how to use this tool. Gord, have you ever tried a chatter tool, if so what was the results like, and how did you make it. I'm interested in decorating some boxes I make but can't afford the Sorby tools. Good video.
Denver, I made a chatter tool years ago out of an old hacksaw blade but it did not work very well. I may have to take it out and try it again. I forgot all about it to be honest. Thanks for watching!
Denver Lewis, you can make a chatter tool really fast. Turn a small hand size handle. Find one of those no-drill skinny screws, the longer, the better. Screw it into one end of the handle! But only screw it in 1/4 to 1/3 the length of the screw. Done. The sharp edge of the top of the screw does the chatter work.
