The Robert Sorby road show was demonstrating at my local wood turner's shop a few days ago after I first saw your video. And, yes I succumbed a bought the tool.
I have had a lot of fun with it since but only on practice pieces.
It's going to take time to master it but already I can see how it can enhance the beauty of a piece.

Sorry, I think I forgot to respond to your question. On the bowls I did, they are hard maple. So being very hard wood it helps the dyes not bleed. I sometimes just use a small artist's brush and that helps. OR.... if the color does bleed, I just turn the adjacent wood away or sand it. Sam

Thanks for making the video. I've been interesting in texturing, but had never found a video that made it look do-able for 'normal' people. Made a chatter tool a while back and never have been able to get anything anywhere near what I see guys online get with the same thing. Might have to give this type of texturing a try - looks much more repeatable than a chatter tool.

I agree that it is all about repeatability. I do have a chatter tool that sometimes give good results but more than not---it does not work too well. The Robert Sorby tool I used is the smaller version. The larger one cost over 200 dollars which I just can't justify. The small one is more affordable. I recently went to a turning symposium where I saw Rex Burnigham demonstrate the tool and picked up some good tips that I used in the video. Sam

It is not my idea, I learned it from Nick Agar in a demonstration. I am sure lots of people have done this technique. It is always good to add a little of yourself when inspired by others. Sam

great video, but how do you keep the dye or ink from bleeding out of the circle?
It is gilt cream. It is made by Liberon and you can find it on Ebay.

Great video, Sam. I could not find the Gilt Cream on the CSUSA website. They do have Rub N Buff which I think may be similar. I have used the gold Rub N Buff on textured items successfully and plan on getting some silver.

I have found a great number of marking pens like this at Dick Blick. Dick Blick.com is an art supply catalog and is also found online. Pentel makes some very good markers. I have other videos dealing with coloring in markers you might search my channel. And find more information there. Thanks Sam
Hi Sam, I've really enjoyed your videos on texturing. I've been thinking about getting a texturing tool and was looking at them on amazon. The micro tool like in your video only comes with 2 cutters for $84.99, the texturing wheel is an extra $19.95 = $104.94 and according to the details the wheels don't have bearings.
The larger one comes with 4 cutters (which have bearings) for $169. and has two more available size cutters.
If you had it to do over again at today's prices would you still prefer the micro over the full size?

I have gotten two point tools from Craft Supply USA. I have seen on handled and the other unhanded. I have never made one but I think with a round screw driver it would be easy.
I have a video on the point tool if you search my channel you should find it. Let me know if you can't

At 9:28, you use the bottom of the tool to make a highlight. Is that recommended? I saw on the other videos, that the tool is to be used from the beveled edge. I just got the tool and would not want to do anything to ruin it, and had to ask.

No I don't think there is any way or angle to hold this tool that would do any damage to it. One thing I have found is that it is very important to lubricate it with some fine machine oil. I would do this once or twice each time you use it.

Are the bearings not sealed? How common are they to replace (should the need ever arise to do so)?
Bertminator I would think the bearings are sealed. I think that it would be just about as cheap to replace the tool. Not sure??? Sam
