    Oh god, that EJ bloke again! Surely everybody is fed up with him by now! Seriously though thanks for coming to see the layout, I had a really good time. I'd love to see Dean Park in the flesh as it was a major source of inspiration for my new layout. Will have to book some more time off, cheers. Richard

      Haha! People are going to be bleedin' sick of him lol. Yeah I had a blast, two days that have defined summer 2019 for me are the Hornby visit and my Everard day. I'll get the goo gone out for your visit, you'll feel at home with the smell. ;-) Cheers. Dave

      Very Interesting, I find myself in a similar boat. Having been born in 96, but I model the LNER in 1937/8 on the Great Eastern in OO and on the ECML in 0 so I find myself doing the same as you. Lots of research and finding photographs & videos. All very interesting.

    I started working for BR InterCity &ScotRail in 1986. I worked 47 Push Pulls&HSTs on E&G all Scotland's 47s were transferred to the Network SouthEast after we got 158s.

      It’s never too late to start. 57….still young enough. But avoid crawling on your knees if you do get a layout going lol, as even in my mid 40’s I’m feeling the result of crawling about my loft for 10 years 😆

    I must admit I too thought Richard was my age (50s) by the way he talks with such knowledge and authenticity and his choice of words.
    I’ve never been all that interested in model railways but am fascinated by the model making, attention to detail and interpretation of an era that you two bring to TH-cam.
    Really enjoyed this chat between you two.

    Ah you guys are great , so good to see and hear you reminiscing and exchanging memories, you were both my inspiration back in 2012/13/14 , we had the odd exchange when I was ‘OldOakCorner’ .. same era as you guys . Alas took it all to bits when my son was due to make storage room in the loft . Since moved and have a man space I built in the garage, where I run a few remaining locos .. moved more into scale modelling , sci-fi kits etc looking to dioramas , miss the sound of a running session , it could get quite loud ! There will be another proper layout for me at some point one day , still have boxes of stuff I spent many an hour over .. keep it up fellas and thanks for all that inspiration you gave me , and still give me as I dip in and out of your channels .. the modelling skills I practice now all stem from those OldOakCorner days watching you both on TH-cam . Many many thanks ! Simon , @ModelbuildStar

      Hi Dave , great to hear you remember me . I have one treasured 4 min running session on video of the OldOakCorner ! I watch now and then and amaze myself at all the graft I put in . So much fun too !
      Really good to see you boys all connecting in the flesh and making videos with the old and new .
      All the best

    "I like me 47 with a clapped out rake of MK2s behind it... I wouldn't wanna go on it as a passenger paying the fares, but as a model it's nice."
    🤣🤣🤣 What an absolutely picture perfect quote from an 80's era modeler.
    As a modeler in his early 30's I can totally relate to Richard's answer regarding colour. Even before blue we had some wonderful colour in our railways. Brown and white, red and cream, greens and then suddenly blue, blue everywhere, everything blue. Then all of a sudden we're hit with these amazing liveries, and Richard's trains running in the background paint the picture perfectly. Blue and grey DMU, Intercity behind RES, full NSE both with a bit of old blue/grey mixed in. Moving North we have Scotrail and Intercity mixed in the Blue/Grey. I see a lot of grey in modern trains. Grey?! They might as well have just left it primed and took the cost of paint off the ticket prices.
    For me it's the clicking of the 86/7's. I can still hear that, standing at the end of Lime Street. 90's and the mighty 91's in IC livery. EJ would look amazing with overhead, eh? All of those electrics but still 37's, 47's, even 40's rumbling around the place. I remember the 158's and 92's being new 😐

      I think those are the coaches I used to travel in as a kid, there was a corridor and seperate little rooms which from memory would sit about six passengers. I actually enjoyed it until some stranger sat opposite you , I much preferred having the room to ourselves LOL

  • @ocalicreek

    I think one reason, if not THE reason you, Richard, Luke Towan, Jason Jensen et al, are doing so well is your willingness and intention to continually learn, grow and improve your skills. That your videos are well made with good sound, focus, pacing, etc. is of course important, but that's simply necessary to provide a platform for the content, regardless of what it is. I know from participation on model railroad forums that too many modelers seem content to settle for mediocre. Perhaps they are afraid to try or maybe they are part of the culture that doesn't value excellence. You prove that it is possible to find great enjoyment in the hobby while striving to do better.
    I appreciate your willingness to share your progress and I wish you the best in all your modeling endeavors! Cheers just now.

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for those kind words and encouragement.
      You’re right,too many people settle for mediocrity and don’t try new things. Some people on the other hand try things just in order to put a video together.
      I know from speaking to Richard that he is in the same mindset as me, in that we only release videos when we feel there is valuable content to share. I’m not in the market for churning out pointless videos as people get sick of contrived and poorly produced content.
      You’re totally right when you say it’s possible to have enjoyment whilst learning new things.After all isn’t that what the hobby is all about?
      Thanks for watching and I hope you continue to enjoy the videos that I produce. Cheers. Dave

      Hi Robin. Thanks for that and your support over a long period of time. Richard, myself and Charlie are three modellers who are on youtube. There are a lot of youtubers who try to model, if that makes sense. The sole purpose for Richard and my channel is to model first and youtube second. Thats the way it should be in my opinion. We just love what we do and I hope that came across in that video. Cheers. Dave

  • @bryanlane62
    @bryanlane62 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well Gentlemen, what can I say..... that video is just superb on so many levels.
    As always, very informative and great to hear both of your experiences of learning how to do things while your railways evolved. Interesting things I’m taking away from the video are that the railway is what you want it to be, it grows at the pace that is right for you, it’s what you do because it’s what you enjoy doing, no way is the right way or the wrong way and don’t ever think that it’s finished !
    I enjoyed the video because I felt as though I was sitting in the loft with you sharing your conversations ! But it was more than just a discussion about a shared interest, it was two really nice guys, two talented guys, chatting together about something that motivates them, sharing openly their thoughts, knowledge and experiences and without agenda or reward, that’s incredibly generous of you, thank you so much.
    Dave, I’ve previously mentioned to you soon after I found your channel, that I’m going to embark on building my own railway, Pevenbourne. Well, my railway room has now been cleared of all the stuff that was dumped there after we moved into the house and all that’s left is my model trains and buses. Next job, putting some sockets around the skirting board in trunking, then new LED track lighting around the ceiling. After that, I’ll be wallpapering around the upper part of the room with blue sky and clouds wallpaper before putting up some cabinets for my 130 or so model buses. And then, I’ll be starting on the lower level boards for the railway. The design of the railway is mostly completed, it’s on two levels with a helix. Lower level will be sidings and a turntable yard. Upper part will be the main running layout. Hopefully, timeline is to get the room to the point of starting to do the lower level boards early next year and then gradually over then next year or two complete the lower level, then the helix and then the upper level. I’m retiring in October 2023 and the railway will be my retirement project. Can’t wait to get started on the lower level so that I can get some trains running. I love watching your videos, it’s all useful information for me for when I build my layouts.
    Thanks again gents, I may have one or two questions for your over the coming years !
    Looking forward to the reciprocal video when Everard Junction visits Dean Park !
    My best wishes and kindest regards to you both.
    Bryan

      Bryan Lane Bryan, I’m am blown away by your comment. Than you for taking the time to get in touch.
      Richard and I could have chatted for hours more! Two modelling friends who are both passionate about doing it right. We are always learning and both of us were open and honest about our stage in the hobby. I’m so glad you picked up on the informal nature of the video, that’s exactly what I was trying to achieve.
      As for your project, it’s great to read that you’re now getting geared up to go for it! By 2023 you will have made god progress, so hopefully retirement will give you the time to really push on with it.
      I’ll let Richard know about your comment too.
      Thanks again for getting in touch. You’re a gentleman. Warmest regards.

    Having followed you both for a few years now, it's great to see the two of you together joking like this. It's beyond just comments back and forth videos now - it's great to see the progression of TH-cam (like you talked about) in how what was almost solitary and very much behind the cameras stuff is now much more in front of the camera and really being able to see faces and interactions. Looks like you all have good fun at shows and events like this, and makes the layouts much personable and relatable. Keep enjoying yourselves and keeping it all as a hobby at the end of the day. Hi, this meeting had been a long long time in the planning and it worked out great. I was surprised when Richard sited me as an inspiration. Great to know other modellers take inspiration from me and have the openness to acknowledge it. I think a lot of it also applies to the Era of Steam too - you have to check how much weight the engine classes could historically pull, you have to check the shed allocations, what livery the engines were in, when their type of engine was introduced, etc., and that's what makes model railways so intricate, so timeless for me. It doesn't help that I intend to build a model railway set in Britain (I'm Canadian) myself, on a certain fictional island next to Barrow-in-Furness.

    What a great time you had Dave. It clearly shows how much you enjoyed making this. I hope Richard can meet you to make something similar at Dean Park. Maybe on the Glasgow show week. Richard mentioned the brilliant work of Luke Towan who I also aspire to but you both have fantastic skills and building a much bigger scene than Luke does. It would take many years to get that level of detail all round a layout. I have the same problem as Richard in that I try to complete an area but move on to the next and then go back to add more detail later, so I know how he feels LOL. I look forward to your updates but I am pleased to hear Richard like you also puts the hobby first and not youtube. The outtakes were a great way of ending Cheers

      cedarcam Hi, cheers. Richard and I get on great. We’ve kinda known of each other for 7 years since I started out. While we’ve met and chatted before it was great for Andy and I to get to see his layout. There is a mutual respect for each other and our strengths and weaknesses. It was probably the most natural chat out there. We could chatter on for hours unscripted! Two real modellers who put the layout first.
      I’d rather be respected as a modeller who has a TH-cam channel than be a mediocre modeller who has a good TH-cam channel. The latter can only take you so far.

    I'm 28 and also modeling a period from before I was born. I knew from the beginning what area I wanted to model but it took some time (and a few odd-ball pieces of Conrail equipment) to land on an era. Like Richard I was attracted to the variety in liveries that existed prior to the formation on Conrail here in the Northeastern US. Honestly, I ended up with the Reading Railroad as my focus because I think green and yellow "Bee Line" scheme is my favorite livery of all time. Additionally, I didn't want to do the 50s because of the relative lack of prototypical steam locomotives available in N scale.

    Thanks for this, you and the other Richard (New Junction) have helped unify, if you like, rail modellers content providers, over the last 9 months or so, from an "outsider"/non modeller in my opinion it's helped to show the sense of community, and introduce new content providers and viewers.
    One thing that I always said to Richard in comments, as he was probably the first person I watched regularly maybe in 2012, was first and foremost, it's your hobby and we're only here for the ride. I guess I'm one of the patient ones, it does grate me a bit where some viewers are like, you're doing it wrong, it looks rubbish, when's the next video, etc, etc, and I just think well where's your channel. But back to the hobby, people usually stay with a hobby coz they have a passion for it, that's what I love about watching, coz you get to see people doing things to the best of their ability coz they genuinely love doing it, like you and Richard have both said in this and previous videos, if you're forced or pressured into doing things for TH-cam coz a few are crying, then you lose that passion, then what's the point, it's no longer a hobby. I honestly don't care if I wait a week, a month, several months or even a year for a video, coz I know it's going to be quality content from you guys. So yeah, ignore the pressure, enjoy the hobby, and those that care will stay around.
    I really enjoy your style too, the way you speak, your presenting is great, I'm a video editor, trust me I've seen much much worse haha, and you eye for detail, been loving the scratch build stuff and how you do the internals and lighting.

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mark. Where do I start...firstly THANK YOU for watching and for your support of the channel. You are spot on with what you say about the pressure of doing videos after videos....I know I and Richard Everard graple with the balance of this. Some others might churn out videos, just to get a video out there, but I cant....I want to make the video as enjoyable to view as I can. I am no expert but I am learning ;-) Richard Everard is a real modeller and has a passion for authenticity....hes a man after my own heart, I love adding details to a layout or scene. I have massive respect for him and we have a mutual respect and understanding of each others skills and areas where we need to work on (weathering locos for me! lol).
      Thanks again and stay tuned....when the worst of the heat goes from the summer sun I will be back up the loft doing what I love....modelling.Cheers. Dave

    • @impy1980
      @impy1980 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DeanPark Honestly mate, quality will always outweigh quantity. It's just a fact of life today that people what everything at one. Whether that's TV or TH-cam content, or stuff they want, clothes etc. The nature of modelling means it takes time, and people must respect that, as well as jobs and other interests, which I meant to mention in my preview message.
      No one is ever truly an expert, and we're constantly learning, and those that are willing to do so will always produce better and better results. I've been video editing for 5 years now (I also think with my job I'm fully aware of making videos doesn't take 5 mins), and I most certainly don't know half what's to learn, just like modelling you can take it as far as you want to. I'll leave you a message on the Hornby video as that's a good example, been meaning to, with some basic tips and principles, as I know you'll take it the right way, and not me trying to tear you apart.
      I agree with you about Richard Everard, I think that's way I find it easy to watch you both, when I edit it's the small details that matter to me, you both also take the time to research and as a result come across as very knowledgeable.
      I check my TH-cam subscription page daily, I barely watch actual TV these days, so I'll spot anything. But damn yeah, the heat, I actually stopped working for 3 days last week, I mostly work from home, in a 7x7ft room, it just turned into a hotbox with the PC on too, people forget that about rail modelling, I tend not to expect many updates/uploads in the summer, as I'm fully aware many have their layouts in the attic or shed.
      Thanks for taking the time to reply, truly a pleasure being part of your hobby.

    RE: "What do you need to develop and improve upon?"
    I hope I'm not repeating anyone else, but when it comes to moving on to a new scenic section before a current one is finished, I'm not sure it matters. In fact, perhaps because it's an artistic endeavour it might be healthy to walk away, because sometimes a new detail idea will just spring to mind which can be noted, and then applied to that given area when time becomes available.
    As for wiring colour codes, hopefully NMRA standards may have guidelines for that, and it's worth it because it doesn't matter what colour wires are what, or joined to whatever when it's all hidden away - until you need to trace a fault and fix it and your brain just wants to explode trying to figure out what's what!
    Also, you can learn more about model railway electronics by joining MERG - Model Railway Electronic Group - who produce a comprehensive range of module kits starting from beginner, and increasing in technical complexity as your confidence grows along with your layout's requirements. They also have area groups which meet at regular intervals and give useful talks and presentations.
    Thanks for getting together and making such an engaging video, it's so refreshing to have such committed young minds and faces taking an interest in the hobby, and utilising new technology to reproduce the past with such aplomb. My first train set was a Triang-Hornby Flying Scotsman set in 1970 for Christmas when I was just 5!

    Great interview I was quite taken back as like many I thought Richard was a lot older that he actually is. The 80's was a great period to be a train spotter. When I seriously started spotting back in 82 everything was blue with the odd red buffer beam on some of the namers. Then came large logo and intercity then this huge explosion of colour as the decade moved on towards the 90's. Once the units started to take over and then privatisation I lost interest hence my current layout Wemblesden is set mid 80's.

      Wemblesden Park hi thanks I wish I was old enough to be spotting in the 80’s! :-) cheers. Dave

      I remember when this new mag came out called Rail Enthusiast (now Rail) one of my school friends used to get it. It documented the run down of the deltics as well as everything else that was going on the network. The following summer we decided to cycle across the the nearby ECML every night after school where we watched the last days of the 25's, 40's 45's & 46's. The HST's were not that old back then and only started to get interesting when they started having names fitted. In 83 we stayed in a caravan for a week right next to the WCML where I fell in love with the AC locos. After leaving school in 84 a group of us bought north east rail rover tickets and clocked up over 1000 miles in a week before we all went our separate ways. Best spotting place I went was Carlisle as they still did loco changes there. You used to get scottish 47's come down where an AC would take over for the journey south. Also used to get the odd 26 if you were lucky. ;)
