OK so I finally finished my 'binge watch' - what am I going to do now? I feel I have learnt a lot; the subtle use of shades of grey, the glory of the finer shades of rust, and the joy of well laid static grass for starters. More seriously, that attention to detail, "god is in the details" certainly applies here. You have made glorious use of the ordinary things in life, rail-side clutter, building sites, caravan parks, re-animating disused station buildings; there is a signal box nearby I have been watching, sadly, as it falls further into decay - one day it will just disappear no doubt. But you are also able to breathe a subtle sense of humour into things - I hesitate to mention the Weasley car, the way certain people/passengers move around, the time-slipping Mr Portillo on the platforms of Dean Park. And of course the fact that you are only halfway(?) through the build, we will all be watching to see what happens next - for years - hurrah!!! And that is without even mentioning your educational, and analytic, reviews of trains and products, excursions off-site to shows and other layouts, interviews and real trainspotting. Thanks you so much Dave, and "Floreat Dean Park"…
Chazzy B hi. Thank you sooo much for watching them all. You deserve a medal lol! I am humbled by your kind words. Don’t panic.... I e another video coming tonight, so you’ll be able to sit and enjoy me grappling with detailing tarmac and installing office interiors!
The level of detail is phenomenal, what sets it all apart is the realism, the track look and 'wear and tear' etc is the best I've ever seen. On the camera you cannot tell it apart from the real thing. A lot of people pack in detail but never finish it off 100%, always looks a bit rough round the edges when examined closely, no hint of that here, your eye never stops looking around for the next gem to see.
Stewart Ross Hi. Really kind of you to get in touch, thank you. I like to make sure I’ve got a section looking finished and tidy before I move on. Nothing worse than an untidy scene. He camera shows up everything. Cheers Dave
Dave, one word, INCREDIBLE. You’re an artist and craftsman. I must confess my extreme admiration of what you’ve achieved. I used to watch the trains down at Hendon in the late 70’s, early 80”s, so a little bit earlier than the period you’re modelling, it was pure BR back then ... a lot of 45’s and 47’s with the odd unexpected visitor ... I was also a modeller back then in my teens ... your layout is simply amazing !! Brilliant !! I congratulate your achievement. 🙏
Nigel Eric Ogden thank you so very much for that really amazing comment. I try my best and for people to give me encouraging feedback is really humbling. You can’t beat BR blue lol. Dave
Stephen Farmer hi. Thank you so much. And thanks for subscribing too. I’ve got a new layout tour on the way soon, showing a lot of developments in the last year. I hope you enjoy watching my other videos. Cheers Dave
Love the scene with the Grandma smacking her grandson with a brolly! Great tour, good to see all those small details that are difficult to spot in the wider shots.
EverardJunction yeah I am sure we’ve all seen a naughty grandchild being walloped by a granny in real life! ...or even been that mischievous child?! Lol
OMG. What a fantastic layout.Im just getting back into the hobby and while my station area is basic hornby off the shelf buildings this has given me some real inspiration to try and make it look more realistic. Amazing. Best layout on TH-cam in my opinion.
Citsemabutfo Dlamini Hi, thank you so much for getting in touch. I’m really glad you enjoyed seeing my work. It’s great that you’ve subscribed and I hope you enjoy watching other videos I’ve uploaded. Cheers. Dave
Absolutely fantastic layout mate.. fantastic job indeed. I've not touched mine for some years now and it makes me want to get it up and running again. Keep up the hard work and I will be following you on your journey. Regards Chris 👍🏼
There is only one word for it "Amazing" The amount of research, attention to detail, weathering, painting all the little extra bits lying around all add a great sense of realism. I don't know how long you have spent making it and of course, there is still some more work left to do. I have learnt a lot from what you have done. I have nearly finished all the buildings for my son's (And me) layout according to the plan. Which you can view on Facebook "Yorkdale LNER Preservation Railway" Best wishes, Martin (Thailand)
Hi, thanks. I think I am well into the tens of thousands of hours on this build so far! So glad you enjoy the level of detail I try and include. Thanks. Dave
Hi Dave, just caught up on all your Vlogs,as always thoroughly enjoyed watching everyone, especially part 1/2 of the Depot shed such incredible detail and patience of the build.Have been watching you for quite awhile now,not being a modeller myself as I’ve mentioned before, your attention to detail is absolutely breathtaking,so pleased to have subscribed to your channel, and will look forward to your future videos.Keep up the hard work my friend, all the best mate Tom.
TOM MAHONEY good to hear from you again Tom. It’s great you enjoy my modelling even if you don’t model yourself. I hope you keep enjoying my work. It’s a pleasure to be able to share it with you and others. Cheers Dave

Robert Masterman hi Bob, it’s been a long journey so far, with a distance yet to travel. I’m thankful you’ve always given me encouragement and honest feedback. Cheers Dave
It's a pleasure Dave, and how on earth could I criticise what you do, as it's impossible to find fault with what you do...I just watch and learn in awe....Best wishes...Bob
Morning Dave. So glad I’ve been on this journey with you 😄 It’s really taking shape and these little tour updates are handy as you can see how much progress has taken place 👍🏻 Are you thinking of running some motorail trains on your layout as another aspect of your running different types trains 😄 Cheers Stevie 😎
Your layout is amazing! You and Everard junction have made me wanna build a model railway!! I particularly like the 80s era with the BR blue locos and DMU's. It brings back nostalgia when I visited my grandparents and went places on these trains. Always wanted a model railway. I'm going for N gauge as I don't have that much space. But there seems to be enough products for this miniture scale.
James Smith hi. Thanks so much for your really great feedback. I’m really glad you rate my layout and I hope it’s given you lots of ideas for your own layout... n gauge is so much better than its ever been. The level of detail on the models is great. Cheers Dave
Hi Dave, That was just superb ! Loved every minute of that video, so well put together. Your attention to detail is amazing and quality of workmanship very impressive. The resulting effect is a very convincing railway in miniature with s strong Scottish flavour ! I particularly love the Lothian Mk1 Leyland National ! I once owned one that I bought from Lothian, when I came to Edinburgh to view it, prior to purchasing it, it looked just like the model on your layout. It was VKE 566S, can’t remember the fleet number Lothian gave it, though 137 springs to mind. Well done on your railway, and thanks for the video tour, I really enjoyed watching it. Kind regards, Bryan
Bryan Lane hi Bryan! Thank you so much for letting me know you enjoyed watching it all. You bought a real bus?! Wow! Bet that was a bit different! Cheers Dave
Hi Dave, Yes the bus was quite a talking point with my family and friends ! I had it for over ten years, took it to many bus rallies. but then I gave it to a friend. It’s still in preservation, lives in Kent these days.
Like how you put the pantograph up between scenes on the 91 very catchy dave love how layout has come on for me I'm all the TMD been waiting for you to get to it now I'm enthralled 😊
mark johny5* Thanks. I’m excited to finally be working on the tmd. Hopefully between now and the end of the year you’ll see a major transformation in the depot. :-) cheers. Dave
ERIC CRAIG cheers. Yeah I’m very proud of it. Love the hobby and how it always forces you to keep challenging yourself to try new techniques etc. Thanks for the feedback, it’s Really very kind of you :-) Dave
fantastic layout, always great to watch, and an inspiration !!..i know its not a big part of the layout but i love that caravan park for example...amazing detail...thousands of subscribers, thousands of views,..i'll just go away and lie down in a darkened room.........cheers,dave
davestrains haha! I’ve not got time to find a darkened room.... I’m too busy building a depot! I really like the caravan park as well. A nice and unusual addition to a layout :-) Cheers. Dave
Fabulous Dave, read an article about you and your layout from a Scottish paper on the internet, it popped up on my home page screen ...congrats it's famous .
Ewood Railway hi thanks. Yeah the local and region press seemed to be interested in my layout :-) great for spreading the word about model railways :-) Cheers Dave
simon hi, thank. Glad you like it and please do keep looking in. Can I ask, as a new sub, how did you come across my channel? Thanks for subbing. I’m truly grateful for your support. Thanks again Dave
Ah Mr Dave . Good day my man , I believe if i can remember i was perusing train videos possibly checking in on my own channel and it was on the screen with other videos and looked interesting . i do like modern image . but i also run a preserved line on the old layout so can run steam lol . Ah the model railway community grows , welcome . I have some great model train friends on my channel feel free to join the family .come in make your self at home and mingle .
Great sharing with us Dave. So lovely to see and watch this layout continuing to develop. My admiration to you for the amount of effort, with superb attention to detail, being put in by the hours you must spend on this. Brilliant! Iain
Dave, your layout is simply stunning. I love the use of multilayered track with the tunnels and bridges and retaining walls....brilliant. I have two questions if you dont mind? How high is the higher level track from the lower level, ie base board to higher track board level? Is there anywhere online that you show your track plan as I would like to setup my new build layout using inspiration from yours. Thanks Dave. Regards John.
Sorry for not replying sooner. I just saw this comment! Track is 90mm above the lower baseboard. I dont have a track plan to hand. It was all designed with sketches, templates and imagination. Old school 😆 cheers. Dave
Truly excellent work Sir. I am intrigued by the 'main line' running around and above the station would you be so good as to explain why you chose to do this? Additionally on your station platforms you have a model of the ramps that are used for disabled passengers to get from the platform to the train can I ask where you got those from please?
As well as detail on your layout your editing and timing is first class when you create your movies. You never linger on anything too long and there are always interesting changes of locos running. :-)
Hi Dave, On your Scotrail push pull class 47 what couplings do you use, please. I know Richard advocates Kadees I thought you were tension lock but that doesn’t always work when propelling? Well not on my helixes.
Lucas Junction hi. I find that the best couplers for propelling are the wide tension lock ones found on most Hornby mk3! The wide slightly curved design allows the bogies to move freely as the coaches go around a curve! However these are no longer produced (Hornby updated this coach to roco close couplers) they work well being pushed. Not tried kadee in a push formation. I did a video on the Oxford Mk3a in scotrail where I think I covered different couplers the Oxford coaches aren’t great At being pushed as their coupler mechanism sags and can dismantle itself!!
I really enjoyed another look all round the layout Spotted lots of little changes. Tweaks you have made. No part of the layout seems to lack a little scene of some kind but they are not over done. Small groups of workers line side clutter all fit in beautifully.
I do Dave. You have a good eye for detail. Oh and I forgot to say. Nice there was not an add popping up every 6 or 7 mins. So thanks for sorting that out
Fantastic update Dave. With the station lighting back in the 90s most lighting was of the old orange type however I cannot seem to find any website that sell orange lights for stations and streets as all streetlights appear to be white. Any ideas.
South to North tamiya clear yellow paint! Paint it on the light lens and it turns them into a orange/yellow effect... I’ve done it with my depot shed lights :-)
It’s an amazing project Dave, it must be quite daunting to someone just starting out. The juxtaposition between this and their own little layout. If you ever want any souvenirs let me know mate.
A cracking video. Love the way you focus on small intricate parts of your layout that can be easily missed. Your attention to detail is very intimidating! Newbies like me can learn a great deal from your experience. Thank you for showing your layout, as it will not be seen on the model railway exhibition circuit for obvious reasons. Have you any plans to do an exhibition layout?
Fircombe Hall Railway OO Gauge hi thanks. Please, Don’t feel intimidated.... it’s just about planning a scene. I get a rough idea of what I want in that particular area, for example a couple of relay boxes. Then I look at a photo or see it for myself at the line side to get an idea of what other details go there. I then make a wee list, Such as cable trunking, speed signs, old rails, sleepers etc. I then try to work them all into that area. I get a lot of my detailing parts from scale model scenery, York model making, or sometimes Bachmann accessories, figures etc. cheers Dave
Constantly amazed by the care and work that you put into your modelling Dave. Just two mysteries: the road over the level crossing doesn't appear to go anywhere and I'm surprised that, with your attention to such fine detail, there are no passengers or lights in the coaches. It's still a work art though!!!! Look forward to the next video. Thanks.
Do you think you will do any replicas of the electrification of the rails in Scotland? Also the new Glasgow station will be finished soon which could be an interesting build!
ViolentTenshi hi, thanks. That would be an interesting task, but the masts etc are of a more modern design so might not fit in with my late 1980’s early 90’s era.
I'm pretty familiar with your layout, but it's still nice to get a tour, and great to have action shots interspersed with your good self telling us all about it. Cheers
Nice one Dave. Havent been following since the beginning, but I did start from video 1 when I did come across your channel about 18 months ago. Has come a long way since the single track in the beginning and has been a lot of inspiration for my own build. I love your detail on even the most insignificant things. This is what separates your work from others. So many things I always think I would never have even thought of. I feel like watching your channel has helped open my sense of imagination. Keep up the good work and I can't wait to see the end result of this loco depot.
Hi, thank you so much for that really kind comment. I do love adding the details, so its great when someone picks them out and appreicates the work I go to ;-) Dave
Absolutely brilliant! Have you produced a track plan? The video, great, but I have a problem sorting out in my ageing brain how it links together. Cheers Matthew .
Aaron Yeoman hi thanks. I use peco code 100 streamline turnouts and flexitrack. You cAn get code 75 which is finer but I found the code 100 was more robust for using up the loft where temperatures fluctuate.
Great tour! Nothing short of outstanding. How on earth do you manage to keep such a large layout dust free? I could not see any dust anywhere especially where it would be noticed on the platforms. Any tips?
Justin Semmens Hi. Thank you so much. Ok dust free. Well I’m sure there is dust lol, but I like to take a one inch soft paint brush and dust it... while at the same time using the nozzle /brush attachment from the dyson to suck up the dust.. you’ll never get it all but a little clean now and again keeps its clean. As for the trains... I dust these with a small puffer brush (which you use to clean the lens on a camera. So it’s soft and won’t damage the trains) Hope that helps.
@@DeanPark Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I do struggle to reach the areas around telegraph poles Etc... But I will follow your sound advice. Cheers Dave!
This is a fantastic layout. The minute attention to detail is phenomenal. How many years has it taken you to reach this stage and how much time per week do you spend actually modelling? Truly inspirational.
Kevin Dwvine Cheers. This is 8 years work so far. Probably another 3 to go to ‘finish’ it... but we never really finish lol. I try get 4-5 hours a week... but a lot of that can be taken up with tiny things like track cleaning or painting figures. :-)
@@DeanParkThat is impressive for the size of the layout, the functionality and the level of detail. As has been said before, it may one day be complete, but never finished. Hope you continue enjoying your project to the standards you have set for yourself.
Hi. Just wondering what you use to keep your track clean, given the size of your layout? I assume getting in with a track cleaning rubber would be a bit of a task. Thanks
Hi, I use the good old track rubber and a CMX track cleaning wagon. I did a video on it ages ago.... th-cam.com/video/HhAKzNJTCTU/w-d-xo.html cheers. Dave
This layout is absolutely brilliant. First class modelling! It has inspired me to build a station and TMD using Scalescenes kits. You have managed to make them look so realistic. A question... what is the depth of the parcel office with canopy... it is shown from 7mins and 8secs in this video. Scalescenes say the building (module B) is 56mm. Does this include the canopy.... Every millimetre is going to count on my plan as I only have 2ft depth on my board. Would love to be able to replicate this wonderful little scene.
I’ll get back to you on that... if I don’t comment again to jog my memory. I won’t be up the loft until the weekend. I so glad you enjoy my layout. I just love working on it :-) such a great hobby. Cheers Dave
Dave, thank you so much for looking into this for me. I am short for space around that side of the board... but can fit it in ok with a small turn round bit of road. Cheers for the support. I hope the build won't be too difficult!
OK so I finally finished my 'binge watch' - what am I going to do now?
I feel I have learnt a lot; the subtle use of shades of grey, the glory of the finer shades of rust, and the joy of well laid static grass for starters. Scott S Hi Scott. it’s the way to go! :-)
The detailing is absolutely amazing...
stephen leary cheers Stephen
@@DeanPark it just reminds me of every year when I used to come to Scotland for Hogmanay..with the push/pulls and 37s over to Inverness
Very nice dave I like the coincidence of the bus having 47 to Dean Park and don't push the portal toilet over lol
Milo T.K lol! I don’t. Yeah my mate mike gave me those buses :-) nice touch. Dave
great video good to see the layout in all its glory 😀👍👍👍👍
Hi, thanks. Dave
looking tidy . will keep looking in . subbed.
simon hi, thank. Glad you like it and please do keep looking in. Can I ask, as a new sub, how did you come across my channel? Thanks for subbing. I’m truly grateful for your support.
Thanks again
Dave
Ah Mr Dave .
Good day my man , I believe if i can remember i was perusing train videos possibly checking in on my own channel and it was on the screen with other videos and looked interesting . i do like modern image . but i also run a preserved line on the old layout so can run steam lol .
Ah the model railway community grows , welcome . I have some great model train friends on my channel feel free to join the family .come in make your self at home and mingle .
Hi Dave, Great to look back at the progress you have made with your layout. Wonderful video to watch. Cheers Greg
Greg Hale cheers Greg. It’s amazing for me to look back at this... I’ve spent a few thousand hours in this so far! :-) Dave
Brilliant stuff!
Mark white Hi, thanks. glad you like it. Cheers. Dave
Great layout tour - thanks for sharing Dave 😊👌👍
Cheers. I do like to do one every year just to show the progress. Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers. Dave
Bloody brilliant!
kurwayork Thanks :-)
Great sharing with us Dave. So lovely to see and watch this layout continuing to develop. My admiration to you for the amount of effort, with superb attention to detail, being put in by the hours you must spend on this. Brilliant! Iain
I M cheers Iain. I’d hate to count the thousands of hours I’ve spent on this. :-) but I love it, so it’s all
worth it.
Small groups of workers line side clutter all fit in beautifully.
cedarcam cheers. Glad you appreciate my efforts to get the balance right. :-) Dave
I do Dave. You have a good eye for detail. Oh and I forgot to say. Nice there was not an add popping up every 6 or 7 mins. So thanks for sorting that out
Fantastic work, Dave! Looking forward to more of the TMD.
cheer, really glad yyou enjoyed it. Dave
Like the great detail ,Dave and the great rolling stock
Thank you. Dave
Great Stuff = Driven by detail if I remember right?. More Please. Al going back to the loft in DC...
Alan Reynolds hi thanks. Hopefully now that autumn is here I’ll be getting up the loft more. :-) cheers
Dave
Been looking forward to the tour for a while. Nice job, Dave.
Hi, thanks. Glad you enjoyed it. Dave
I get a lot of my detailing parts from scale model scenery, York model making, or sometimes Bachmann accessories, figures etc.
cheers
Dave
@@DeanPark Any plans for an exhibition layout? It would be a bit far for me to travel from Kent to see it though!
Thanks for this video Dave, your layout is beautiful! Joachim
Hi, my pleasure. Glad you enjoyed it. :-) Dave
Constantly amazed by the care and work that you put into your modelling Dave. Just two mysteries:
the road over the level crossing doesn't appear to go anywhere and I'm surprised that, with your attention to such fine detail, there are no passengers or lights in the coaches. It's still a work art though!!!! Look forward to the next video. Thanks.
Dave Hutton yes the road is a tricky one lol.
It simply could not be more realistic Dave. A masterpiece. Cheers, Bob
trainmanbob oh now there’s a challenge!! Lol...
Absolute perfection!
Perfection...well I aint sure about that lol. But I do try. Dave
I wish I could have the space and money for that 10/10 effort making it👍
Do you think you will do any replicas of the electrification of the rails in Scotland? Also the new Glasgow station will be finished soon which could be an interesting build!
ViolentTenshi hi, thanks. That would be an interesting task, but the masts etc are of a more modern design so might not fit in with my late 1980’s early 90’s era.
@@DeanPark Thats fair :)
I'm pretty familiar with your layout, but it's still nice to get a tour, and great to have action shots interspersed with your good self telling us all about it. Cheers
davie maclean cheers Davie. I like to update my tours every wee while. Dave
Hi Dave. Been looking at some of your previous videos. What did u use for the wall capping
Hello Dave,
Fantastic layout, i love the detailing on it. How you made yor backgrond ?
Regards, Herman HC Treintje Belgium.
amazing
Beta Prime hi, thanks
Always a great video Dave...cheers, Chris
Wheezy Palace N gauge hi Chris. Glad you enjoyed it. Dave
Hi, I dont have a track plan that I can really show on screen, its not digitallu produced. I did it the old way...paper and pencils! Cheers. Dave
Excellant video layout looks amazing dave keep up the good work
Kenny Attlesey thank you. So glad you’re enjoying it. Dave
Brilliant
Good layout
Awesome layout, very inspiring. I'm about to start building one myself. Could I ask which track you use for your layout?
Aaron Yeoman hi thanks.
I use peco code 100 streamline turnouts and flexitrack.
You cAn get code 75 which is finer but I found the code 100 was more robust for using up the loft where temperatures fluctuate.
@@DeanPark thank you. Mines gonna be in the garage so would you recommend me getting code 100 then due to the same issue with temperature?
@@DeanPark sorry to ask another question but do you solder your track joints?
Aaron Yeoman hi I’d go code 100
No u dont solder my rail joins. They need room to expand and contract
So it’s soft and won’t damage the trains)
Hope that helps.
@@DeanPark Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I do struggle to reach the areas around telegraph poles Etc... But I will follow your sound advice. Cheers Dave!
You have a good eye for details and mixed textures rather than uniform representation. I hope you still enjoy operating too.
That's an incredible layout, the detail is phenomenal! Is the Dean Park name a nod to a certain star of Ayr's Gaiety Theatre?
Dave
DaveClass47 thanks for the quick reply. I will check out your video on this
This layout is absolutely brilliant.
Cheers
Dave
Ok, I’ve had a look... the parcels office is 55mm but with the canopy is 90mm. Hope that helps?
Dave, thank you so much for looking into this for me. I am short for space around that side of the board... but can fit it in ok with a small turn round bit of road. Cheers for the support. I hope the build won't be too difficult!
