It'd be great if they cast him as a J.W. Pepper-type character, but only for a few seconds. That, or somebody who runs a group therapy session called "My Weekly Bond."
Calvin not wearing a tie was fitting because this is the only film where Roger doesn't wear a tuxedo And strangely enough Sean doesn't wear a tux in YOLT even though he's plastered all over the poster art in one
Honestly, I always thought this was Roger’s Bond at his most cool. You know what I mean? He approaches every scene with a cocky swagger and bulletproof attitude. Especially with the villains trapping him and outsmarting him, he always seems in control and makes it all look easy.
I also adore his style in this one in particular. Drinking bourbon and smoking cigars. This movie has one of the coolest Bond looks, in my opinion, when Moore is in his black turtleneck with the shoulder-slung holster, and he's carrying around that big revolver.
Fair point, although Moonraker seems to be Roger Moore at the top of the James Bond game, as he had developed his own style, less influenced by Sean Connery.
I have always enjoyed how he has to operate in establishments where he sticks out like a sore thumb. He's mocked and is no longer master of his domain. In fact, his airs and graces are to his detriment
My earliest Bond memory is seeing a clip of the speedboat chase from Live And Let Die on Screen Test. I was 7 years old and have been an avid Bond fan ever since. Screen Test, for those too young to remember it or who live outside the UK, was a children's TV quiz where contestants would watch a movie clip then have to answer questions about it. I only remember one of the questions from the LALD clip - the boat that ended up in the swimming pool first went past a man sitting next to a small table, can you name two of the items on that table? To this day I can't watch that bit of the film without reeling them off in my head - drink, ash tray, packet of cigarettes and a book of matches...

I distinctly remembered the parts about Rosie because she was one of my favorite characters, lol
Clifton James again does the comic Sherrif shtick in Silver Streak (1976) although toned down considerably. It also features Richard Kiel as a henchman with "bad dental work" pre TSWLM
I have a special affection for LALD because it was the first movie I ever saw at the cinema, aged 10. Calvin, I've been a fan of yours since these were the main reviews on your channel. Thanks for all the great commentary over the years. Every time I rewatch a movie now, I notice little details you've pointed out. I'm looking forward to your TWINE review, as it is has been my favorite Brosnan since I was a kid. I really hope that David Arnold/Scott Walker's "Only Myself to Blame" will earn a mention. One of the two most unfortunate unused Bond songs (the other being the Arnold/Bassey QoS song), and an important one, as its melody is prominently featured through Arnold's incredible score.
As an aside, It's a myth that the Arnold/Bassey song ['No Good About Goodbye'] was related to QOS in any way. Arnold himself said in 2009 it was barely started when 'Another Way to Die' was being made and only intended for Bassey's 'The Performance' album which Arnold co-produced.
The melody that accompanies the words "no good about goodbye" in the chorus shows up prominently in the QoS score. So, it was obviously connected in Arnold's mind. Maybe the song was written after the score was complete, or as an after thought?
@@kayakeenut Arnold says it was done after the score for QOS was completed but it makes sense QoS was still on his mind and bled into his next project.
Another wonderful young Calvin review. Still laughing at the last one. AVTAK being the previous one, it was nice to contrast it with Roger in his pomp. Apparently, he wanted to do the double decker stunt himself, but it was too expensive for the insurance. Hope to see young Calvin again soon. Really look forward to them.
Lol same. I was laughing really hysterically when he said that "this stupid cow turns up" :D Anyway, fun watching as always. Also Live and Let Die is actually my favourite with Roger!
I wonder if you’ve ever seen Silver Streak. Because Clifton James yet again plays a sheriff and while still comedic, he plays it so differently! I’d love to see you review that someday. Hehe, I think this is the most I’ve seen you cringe at a past review.
I’ve wanted a review of this for a while now. Mad that Richard Kiel is also in it with teeth but before Spy. A brilliant film - Wilder, Pryor and McGoohan!
Unlike some fans I find the character hilarious and his second appearance does have him interacting with Bond which doesn't really happen here, but a third film would be pushing it! He could have turned up in 'View' for the fire engine bit though!
Second Bond film I saw all the way through in late 1982 (shortly after seeing Dr. No just a week or two before). Clifton James was also in Bad News Bears Breaking Training (but not as a sheriff), which I understand Quentin Tarantino considers one of the best sequels ever made.
I'm disappointed that you didn't mention George Martin's fantastic score. As much as I love John Barry's work I think Martin's one off was brilliant and really thrilling I had this soundtrack on vinyl and played it all the time. It's a fun movie mid level Bond for me. Keep up the good work Calvin as I have said many times before, you are my favorite Bond content creator. Your fan, Mike
I like this series. Ryan George has been doing that with his Pitch Meeting videos and I think this is perfect for your Bond reviews as it’s definitely time for not just revisiting reviews but a possible full on re-rank with No Time To Die in the picture.
I think this film really started the modern Bond era. Before this, the movies felt like often dreary sunday matinee films, to watch with a pipe and slippers. But this movie brought it all into the heavily swinging 70's. How many times have we seen speedboat chases after this film? But how many double-decker bus chases? The only thing which spoils it is the fact that the main villain looks identical with and without the mask, and he blows up like Jaws. I expect that's where they got the idea. But then they had to spoil it with the Man with the Golden Puns.
My wife is from South Africa and one of my first missions of our marriage was to watch all the bond films and have them rated from 000 to 007. I provided no personal opinion or context before we watched the film. We would discuss after she gave her uninfluenced opinion. I distinctly recall her giving Live and Let Die a 005. When I asked her why, she responded "It would have been a 006, but Rosie Carver is the most annoying character I've ever seen in a bond film. I hated her." The hatred for Rosie Carver transcends genders and continents.
I'm watching all your bind movie reviews one at a time. Really enjoyable. I also have a soft spot for pierce brosnan partially because I am from the same small town in ireland as he is . Navan.
LALD is certainly a very good Bond film however it always feels a little bit odd how “small” it feels in regard to some production values and also other points like the aspect ratio of the image.
Live and let die is 50 this year and Octopussy+NSNA are 40. To think in 2025 Moore's last [view] and Brosnan's first [Goldeneye] will be 40 and 30 and Craigs first is 20 the following year-how time flies!
Your northern accent was more noticeable for me in this one (the old review). You mentioned in the LTK in-depth review that you are from the north of England (when talking about Dalton's accent slipping)
Just thought of this 10 rewatch videos in. `So it comes to this, a James Bond 're watch video`. But keep up the good work Calvin :) could I ask is there any plans a foot for a review of the Andor tv series? It is a mashup of espionage and star wars which I hope is right up your street
You’ve aged well Calvin. I look at my old photos & do look (if I say so myself) fantastic but I wouldn’t like to listen to both myself & my attitude of the day (my time would be 1981 to Match) I did walk about like a 17year old Roger. My one & only Bond
i like LALD with it's Blaxploitation under tones(or overtones) but it is rather dated and dare i say it a bit racist with J.W. Pepper but i guess that were the times. P.S. did you know that J.W. stands for John Wayne, Calvin?
LALD(1973) & TMWTGG(1974): I like these movies. These are cool movies. However... I think that this is not my Roger Moore yet. Maybe I don't like Guy Hamilton's directon very much. James Bond is too brutal in these films. Especially awful was the scene with Bond and Andrea Anders in Peninsula Hotel room. And of course the death of Kananga was WTF!? I also think that 1,85:1 aspect ratio is so unglamorous... *** My true Roger Moore is: 1977, 1979, 1981, 1983, 1985. I adore these last 5 movies! My favorite era in the franchise!
I’m perfectly fine with her. She gets killed off quickly so any annoying traits never resonate (unless you’re a Bond fan who hates campy Bond and only remembers Moore’s films for some silly little thing).
It's very annoying when the character is in a position where they are clearly intelligent/successful but are written to be really incompetent to get easy laughs-such as MI6 agent Mary Goodnight or business woman Stacy Sutton.
th-cam.com/video/XGymsJIbtK4/w-d-xo.html Young Calvin, you're forgetting Grace Jones' fantastic performance as Mayday. Also Putter Smith and Jimmy Dean in Diamonds Are Forever.
J.W. Peppers line with the elephant, 'Boy you is Ugly' was one my dad used a lot back in the day. He's a character who is so out of place but he doesn't take up huge chunks to the film where its a hindrance.
Sheriff J W Pepper fan here. Terrific character and genuinely funny (imho). I just love LALD. It's a riot from start to finish. Definitely one of my favourite Bonds. I went to see it with my father who wasn't impressed. On the way home he insisted the casting of Moore was all wrong and that he was Simon Templar and always would be. The fact The Saint hadn't been in production for more than four years having no bearing on the decision!
It's funny how in your review, you take the piss out of the movie and by the end you're saying "Live And Let Die is pretty damn awesome and feels like a real step forward for the franchise". Can't let the audience know how you actually feel until the end haha. But how did you at one point like TMWTGG so much that it was your #1 Bond film? Even as a die hard Roger Moore fan it seems odd that that'd be your favorite instead of literally any of his other six. I just think that movie is so bad and really cheesy. I guess it makes SOME sense because that movie is Roger fully as Bond but before the huge action set pieces of TSWLM and Moonraker. It's much more focused on Bond as a character rather than the overall story. Plus you've got the great Christopher Lee in it who elevates even the crappiest movies haha. Great video!
If I want to do a James Bond marathon (again), I'd start with Live and Let Die. Although some annoying parts, It's odd, wacky, somewhat cool, and we get Roger Moore fishing in a tanktop.
He's said he's reading the books in order so will get to it eventually but it will be in a while [as he's got Gardner to finish and the Benson books to do].
Unpopular opinion: I like Golden Gun more than this film. LaLD has its pacing issues, and Rosie IS one of the very worst Bond girls (pairing Mary Goodnight's idiocy and Stacy Sutton's shrill annoyingness), but its a mostly pretty solid entry in the series. The best description I've ever heard for why it works is that "it succeeds through sheer bravado". Compared to the cheap and mostly flacid Diamonds, LaLD goes big on everything and just pummels you with big performances, lots of color and music, and the longest action scene to date. But, to me, that makes it an exhausting film to watch. More of a Saturday afternoon movie than a chill evening-with-a-few-drinks staple. Golden Gun, despite being pretty stupid, moves quickly from one but to another, enjoying being weird and so LUSHLY 70s. It's all style, but a quieter kind, yet still much faster-paced than Moonraker. That puts it in the sweet spot for silly Moore outings. It's also a real trip of a film, with some of the craziest visuals; reminds me a bit of another classic film of the era: The Phantom of the Paradise. It's one of the Bond films i watch most often.
I doubt they would do a direct Never Say Never Again style remake but they have re-used elements for new stories [such as 'a third party manipulating USA+ Soviets into WW3 used in YOLT and TSWLM, View to a Kill's plot is an 80's update of Goldfinger swapping Gold for Microchips].
Greatness of amazing nostalgia memories Old classic video me watch old back in the day greatness of amazing awesome fun video of Roger Moore James bond movie live and let die greatness of amazing fun video 😊
When people complain about Denise Richards, I point to Rosie Carver and other Bond girls. You just accept their wacky characters, no matter how unbelievable they seem.
A big problem with TWINE is that it feels like it's trying to tell a more serious story with Elektra king [dealing with subjects like Stockholm Syndrome] but also has the cheesy lines and OTT action and the two tones noticeably clash. People latch on to Denise Richards because of how she's clearly not meant to be taken seriously [given her Lara Croft inspired outfit] so is the easiest thing to criticise which is unfair to Richards she lumbered with techno-jargon and her character is poorly written.
Happy amazing 50 anniversary Roger Moore James bond movie adventure live and let die greatness of amazing awesome old classic video Calvin Dyson on live and let die greatness of amazing awesome nostalgia memories fun video 😊 amazing fun video
I love these look-back videos! My favorite Bond is also Moore, but Connery and Brosnan are very close behind. Not crazy about Lazenby and don't really enjoy Dalton, but the only Bond I just despise is Craig. I can watch any Bond film, except the Dalton ones, Connery's dull cash grab, Moore's last film and every Craig attempt, except CR. Love your work, great entertainment!
I agree with almost everything, except I think Dalton was better than Craig and I love A view To A Kill. I can't even watch the Craig films because the cinematography is too shaky and too many camera cuts
@@TundraShiz We agree about Dalton being better than Craig. I don't watch View to a Kill, because Moore seems like he's not having any fun and the plot makes no sense, but I respect your love for it👍

Hey James - Saw it last night - and I actually thought it was terrific! I think Gal Gadot was absolutely perfect and it is probably the best of all of Hollywoods attempts at creating a James Bond inspired female spy film. Hopefully we will see this spin off into a nice little Netflix franchise! It is definitely I think something most Bond fans will enjoy - and I would love to see Calvin’s take on it. Great timing too! I wonder if you’ve ever seen Silver Streak. Because Clifton James yet again plays a sheriff and while still comedic, he plays it so differently! I’d love to see you review that someday.
Hehe, I think this is the most I’ve seen you cringe at a past review.
and JAWS himself is in that movie too ;)
I’ve wanted a review of this for a while now. Mad that Richard Kiel is also in it with teeth but before Spy. A brilliant film - Wilder, Pryor and McGoohan!
@@davidjones_1185 i'm a willy wonka fan too so i desperatley hope calvin will consider it one day :)
I love that as we grow up, we don’t care as much about what people think about us. It’s great to see your reactions to a younger you!!
Wish we got a 3rd movie with Sheriff Pepper to complete his trilogy
he was kind of funny in LALD, but he was out of place and annoying in TMWTGG. A third outing for JW might've killed the franchise haha
Unlike some fans I find the character hilarious and his second appearance does have him interacting with Bond which doesn't really happen here, but a third film would be pushing it! He could have turned up in 'View' for the fire engine bit though!
Is there a link between Rosie Carver from 'Live And Let Die' and Elliot Carver from 'Tomorrow Never Dies'?
Second Bond film I saw all the way through in late 1982 (shortly after seeing Dr. No just a week or two before). Clifton James was also in Bad News Bears Breaking Training (but not as a sheriff), which I understand Quentin Tarantino considers one of the best sequels ever made.
Clifton James plays one of the passengers in Juggernaut.
Let's go, new calvin video
I wonder if Calvin is the type of person to play TRPGs. There's a James Bond one that could make a nice video.
George Martin was fantastic - on a different level.
I like this series. Ryan George has been doing that with his Pitch Meeting videos and I think this is perfect for your Bond reviews as it’s definitely time for not just revisiting reviews but a possible full on re-rank with No Time To Die in the picture.
I love watching these reactions to old videos, very entertaining Calvin.
To be fair Rosie was a useless agent. She makes Mary Goodnight seem competent. I like the actress though. The funniest thing was the funeral dance. 😂
Very true.
Great & highly entertaining new reaction video, of your old Live & Let Die review. Calvin. this one is my all time favourite James Bond film. :)
I hated her."
The hatred for Rosie Carver transcends genders and continents.
I bought those replica James Bond Tarot Cards that Factory Entertainment made
I aslo those Replica tarot cards
Have you ever thought about reviewing Roger Moore's performance in A Princess for Christmas?
Live and Let Die is basically as old as I am were both 50 although my day is January
You were adorable then & now.
Roger plays it hard-boiled in this film.
I love how much you hated Rosie back then.
Your hatred of Rosie was so funny at the time. Memories from a very long time ago
i like LALD with it's Blaxploitation under tones(or overtones) but it is rather dated and dare i say it a bit racist with J.W. Pepper but i guess that were the times. P.S. did you know that J.W. stands for John Wayne, Calvin?
Sheriff John Wayne Pepper?
yep. it's on his Wiki page.@@sashaking1115
Teenage Calvin’s hatred of Rosie is something I can still relate to ;)
Don't get it, myself.
I find her incompetence charming.
She's a harmless first act bit of comic relief.
I had no issues with Rosie. I thought the scarecrow scene was fantastic
I’m perfectly fine with her. She gets killed off quickly so any annoying traits never resonate (unless you’re a Bond fan who hates campy Bond and only remembers Moore’s films for some silly little thing).
@@danjonmills She's not attractive. No curves. Worse Bond girl ever. Why is she in the best Bond's best Bond film?
The world is not enough critique next? 🔥
Don't hold your breath, it was eight months between his GoldenEye and Tomorrow Never Dies deep dives haha.
@@spencerkindra8822It'll probably be less as he did 'Nightfire' between the two. Around December/Christmas is my bet, can't wait.
@@jamesatkinsonja Ahhhh I didn't think about that. Hopefully you're right!
Live and let die is ABSOLUTELY AWESOME and STUNNINGLY AMAZING
Rest in peace Sir Roger Moore legends never die
Sheriff J W Pepper fan here. Terrific character and genuinely funny (imho). I just love LALD. It's a riot from start to finish. Definitely one of my favourite Bonds. I went to see it with my father who wasn't impressed. On the way home he insisted the casting of Moore was all wrong and that he was Simon Templar and always would be. The fact The Saint hadn't been in production for more than four years having no bearing on the decision!
Calvin! You're old video looks like it was recorded after a night out or you were smoking something very suspicious :).
Have you seen the silver streak Clifton James plays another sheriff in that one as well
It's funny how in your review, you take the piss out of the movie and by the end you're saying "Live And Let Die is pretty damn awesome and feels like a real step forward for the franchise".
Doreen Grey had his painting to stay young you have your old videos
Apparently ioi the makers of hitman are bringing out a new bond game
Not your favorite Bond girl, but no longer a dozy cow. That's an improvement.
0:41 (Random Man who sees Hairy almost topless bond walking through hotel foyer 'Die Another Day'):
NO TIE!!!!!!
I sometimes forget you used to be Justin Bieber.
Calvin, considering your attitude to Rosie Carver here, I wonder what your younger self will be like about Mary Goodnight?🤯
Loved his nod to Golden Gun in Die Another Day.
you should read FOREVER AND A DAY by Anthony Horowitz. It's about Bond when he first gets his 00 rank.
He's said he's reading the books in order so will get to it eventually but it will be in a while [as he's got Gardner to finish and the Benson books to do].
13:25 - “The name’s Ending. THE Ending.” 👋
Live and let die is a very underrated movie.
I agree. Roger Moore is my favorite Bond as well. Though my favorite film has and will always be The Spy Who Loved Me.
Do you think EON will ever make a straight-up remake of one of the Bond films?
I doubt they would do a direct Never Say Never Again style remake but they have re-used elements for new stories [such as 'a third party manipulating USA+ Soviets into WW3 used in YOLT and TSWLM, View to a Kill's plot is an 80's update of Goldfinger swapping Gold for Microchips].
No
Greatness of amazing nostalgia memories Old classic video me watch old back in the day greatness of amazing awesome fun video of Roger Moore James bond movie live and let die greatness of amazing fun video 😊
Also, I’m glad you’re as big a fan of Roger Moore as I am
Oh my, poor Rosie...
Happy amazing 50 anniversary Roger Moore James bond movie adventure live and let die greatness of amazing awesome old classic video Calvin Dyson on live and let die greatness of amazing awesome nostalgia memories fun video 😊 amazing fun video
I like the in - depth review’s better
The “stupid cow” line had me nearly spitting my morning coffee out, so funny Calvin.
I don't watch View to a Kill, because Moore seems like he's not having any fun and the plot makes no sense, but I respect your love for it👍
@@FreeFree-ur4zq agreed, but I love Christopher Walken as Max Zorin.
@@TundraShiz Only 'Quantum' has the shaky cam-none of the other Craig films do.

This is a middle of the road Bond for me. Love that poster, such a shame they stink on ice now.
I adore Rosie.
You are the cutest thing in the world... I mean you were :(

Love your content and your videos this summer. You probably get lots of suggestions but it might be fun to do a revisit video on your great Johnny English reviews at some point and more Bourne and kinsman reviews now MI and Indy are caught up.
defo. the 2000's movies needs some more talk about
Be interested to hear your thoughts on 'Heart of stone' given the presence of jamie dornan-often linked to bond- and it feeling like an attempt to do a female version of bond
just had to google this now and wooow fair enough. to be honest theres too much stuff coming out from hollywood actors. even harrison ford is doing ' Shrinking' is news to me recentley
all the best by they way :) just saw 2004 thunderbirds hahaha ;)
Hey James -
Saw it last night -
and I actually thought it was terrific!
I think Gal Gadot was absolutely perfect and it is probably the best of all of Hollywoods attempts at creating a James Bond inspired female spy film.
Hopefully we will see this spin off into a nice little Netflix franchise!
It is definitely I think something most Bond fans will enjoy
- and I would love to see Calvin’s take on it.
Great timing too!
Because since the SAG strike and WGA strike is still going on with no real end in sight
- who knows when we will see the return of our hero…..
