In a publicity interview for TND (which is on TH-cam) Pierce Brosnan talked about how he almost made an 'unofficial' Bond produced by Kevin McClory (yet again based on Thunderball), during the post LTK/pre GE time period. They had finance from Japan and were setting the thing up but legal issues stopped it from filming. I am slightly surprised EON were still happy to work with him after that.
I was surprised to hear that too. I suppose Brosnan has a long term relationship with Eon [having first meet them on the set of FYEO] and given 'Goldeneye' had to be a hit to relaunch the series, getting the popular Brosnan possibly motived them to 'forget' about the incident [it had virtually no chance of being made as the later 'Warhead 2000' proved]. The Tomorrow Never Lies rumour is probably also perpetuated by Pulp's song being called that. Of course it's likely that they just changed the title when it was rejected? Either way, having the song floating around likely only keeps the rumour going... Excellent video as always!
Pulp do have a song-'I Spy- on the previous years 'Mission Impossible' soundtrack album. Like a lot of 90's tie in albums, it's songs 'inspired by the film' so only a few actually show up in it.
It's interesting as 'Radiohead' were able to release there demo as 'Spectre' but maybe Pulp would have met a copyright issue if they didn't change the title, hence picking something that sounds like the original but is different [like how a lot of 'parody' songs do] which might have started the rumour. Like you, I wondered if the title story was an 'urban myth' like a lot of Bond stories [I keep seeing 'That Shirley Bassey song should have been the theme for 'Quantum' when David Arnold confirmed it was written after the film was released for example].
. It's funny as I Spy is something of a parody of spy life. It probably would be a good summing up of Harry Palmer and one of Le Carre's anti heroes in talking about the mundane doings of a basic level surveillance officer. I like to think the person compiling the soundtrack album read the title and thought that'll do, without reading the lyrics.
I know the 'dodgy fax' story was also rumoured to be how Donkey Kong got his strange name - that it was meant to be Monkey Kong but the D turned into an M due to said dodgy fax. That one has been disproved - it was just a bad grasp of English on Miyamoto's part. But maybe, in an alternate timeline somewhere, Rareware made a Tomorrow Never Lies video game that connects to Monkey Kong 64 and Dream: Land of Giants via fully functional Stop 'n Swop technology.
That reminds me of Black Box's 1989 hit 'Ride on Time' when the song's lyric is 'Right on Time' which occurred due to the Italian producers limited English.
But does the fact that the title was taken from Tomorrow Never Knows disprove the "the ink in the fax machine ran" story? Because the producers could still have wanted to call the movie "Tomorrow Never Lies" originally because that title is already different from the song title. Then the ink ran and they said "You know what, Tomorrow Never Dies is a better title let's go with that instead."
. The song Voodoo Ray by A Guy Called Gerald was supposed to be called Voodoo Rage after a sample of that phrase appearing in the song. But the early electronic recorders memory couldn't hold that many characters when saving a title.
TND was made when Teri Hatcher was still riding the Lois and Clark popularity wave. She was the "it" girl for a time. Jonathan Pryce strikes me as more of a Conrad Black/Robert Maxwell type. But the foreshadowing of Murdoch's move into the Chinese market was on point.
As you say, Hatcher was a massive name in the USA at the time and MGM was trying to re-establish Bond in America so her casting made a lot of sense in 1997 as did getting Sheryl Crowe [who's was establish herself as a very popular artist in America] to do the title song. For my money, given Paris feels quite underwritten and isn't given much screen time, Hatcher did a good job.
In the Die Another Day novelization, Bond sees a Korean read the Korean edition of the Tomorrow newspaper, so that's a neat bit of continuity within the Brosnan era itself!
That does fit given the big newspapers/media often survive and keep a core audience despite various scandals [Hence why 'News of the World' ceasing publication in 2011 after the phone hacking scandal was very unusual]. .
Ahhh you've come a long way Calvin!! I have such a soft spot for this one, like you say it's very "Bondy" and hits all the tropes well while giving us a little more on them at the same time, especially having Michele Yeoh as his equal!! Plus I saw it in Argentina while travelling, I'll never forget the publicity ... Mañana NUNCA Muere !! 😂
I don't know why people hate on the bad guy. The actor looked like he was enjoying every minute of every word he would say. He looks like he is savoring his Lines haha. Love it
I never forgot that gynecologist joke (I know it spells differently sometimes). Every time I re-watch either the film or that scene, I never fail to remember it and then proceed to have myself a perverse little chuckle.
Tomorrow Never Dies is clearly a better title than 'Tomorrow never Lies', which would be a weirdly literal reference to the plot. The phrase 'Tomorrow Never Dies' is very Bond and even quite Fleming-esque in its mysterious and bombastic feel
Great new reaction video, Calvin. to your old & entertaining Tomorrow Never Dies review. its one of the best James Bond films & definitely one of my all time favourites. :)
You gotta review Goldfinger 64. The spy who loved me 64 is coming out soon. Both unnoficial fan remakes, but they're so well done in the style of goldeneye I think it's definitely worth your time.
Great video, Calvin! Hope you had a great birthday yesterday. I watched Octopussy and then saw a tribute to Roger Moore and remembered it was his birthday- and yours! I enjoy visiting your Lost Media wiki pages. Unpopular opinion, but I don’t think you’re that wooden in your older videos. I think your passion and enthusiasm still shines through. And besides, you were in the beginning stages of your TH-cam career, so you were still adjusting to it.
Well that’s an understatement. HUGE difference between the two languages. I speak Japanese (poorly) and can’t understand a word of Cantonese or mandarin. My wife speaks Cantonese and can’t understand any Japanese.
I watched this and ended up watching the actual movie! I agree. It's a perfect Bond film for a Sunday afternoon (I recall you mentioning that bout TMD in a video a while back)
Wonderful as ever from young Calvin. I must admit, I would have preferred kd langs song at the end, to be the actual theme. It's got bit of Shirley Bassey about it. You have said Calvin on a couple of the previous videos you would be doing The Man With The Golden Gun next. Is that coming soon, or are you saving it for the 50th anniversary next year. Either way, look forward to more young Calvin.
I enjoy seeing the appreciation for Jonathan Pryce in TND in these videos. I've always felt like an outlier for being a fan of his performance in this film. I usually see a lot of negativity when people comment on Carver.
I think it goes too far in places [like that 'Kung fu' bit which should have been cut] but if you like OTT villains, Pryce is certainly having fun with the part.
My guess is that Lost Media Wiki is owned by Elliot Carver and you will be paying for your insubordination for releasing the video. Get your Nokia/Taser ready mate.
Another great video! Love these retrospect reviews of reviews 🤣. I agree with you completely I find it hard not to go for Octopussy or Tomorrow Never Dies when looking for a film. Although I do always watch for your eyes only too. Particularly love Conti's score. The 70s disco over the PTS... brilliant.
To be fair, its just the mood. Sometimes a great Bond can feel flat, and sometimes a dull one can seem great. This is a good example. It's kind of sloggy in places, but it feels the most grounded since TLD. Before all the 'Ah Bond, James Bond' nonsense, and the other top 10 bond clichés were mocked in DAD.
TND(1997) has some very great stuff: Pre-title sequence, Bond & Q scene, Dr. Kaufman scene and of course: BMW 750iL car chase!!! *** Sadly, that last 3/3 is very boring/uninteresting! And as soon as Bond and Wai Lin board the Carver's stealth ship... OMG! One of the worst unglamorous endings in the franchise ever! So, overall a very average movie.........................
Given the rushed production it's not surprising the last 3rd is pretty much action scenes as there wasn't the time to beef up the script. Bond+Wai Lin hooking up at the end feels pretty forced too. Agree it's pretty average.
I still find it amazing that Tomorrow Never Dies gets so much love and I don't really understand why 😄 TND must be for me what From Russia With Love is for you
Calvin I think the reason you come back to TND is Carver. Perhaps the best Bond movies have the best combination of Bond, Villian, and Bond girl. If that's true then yes.. TND is awesome :)

While I do enjoy the content you upload on a basis that fits your schedule, I was just wondering... When's your next indepth James Bond film review? 🥺👉👈
Your point in the original video about how you like Tomorrow Never Dies the same way you like Octopussy makes total sense because those movies share a lot of DNA. They're the most fun yet still quasi grounded movies of their respective actors. Then if you look at A View To A Kill and Die Another Day both movies are much more ridiculous.
Michelle Yeoh has spoken very fondly about TND and Eon in recent interviews [such as with GQ and People], but has said that she struggled to get established in Hollywood afterwards, mostly due to ignorant producers [she said some assumed she didn't speak English or got her nationality wrong] but also as she wanted to avoid typecasting. It does make me wonder if this made her reluctant to return to Wai Lin either in a spin off or in the proposed 'Die Another Day' cameo-officially she was 'unavailable' which is sometimes used as a polite way of turning something down. That might be me reading into the comment wrongly, but if true while I'd have loved to see a Wai Lin return, given her varied career and success over the last 20 years [including her Oscar win], credit to her for sticking to her guns.
I can see her coming back as another character like a Bond villian or a leader of the Chinese spy service or something perhaps. It could be good of EON to take on the oppurtunity to do so seeing as see is mega popular again
You know its extraordinary Calvin that 'Tomorrow never dies' has climbed up peoples list over the past few years because I was aware that a lot of people found it to be a fairly average movie back in the day. But now it seems to be very popular amongst people. Why is that do you think? Do you think people didn't realise what movie they had back in the day and potentially its a wake up call for EON on how to go about on the next movie?
I'm guessing because of Michelle Yeoh's higher profile and the 'media' angle feeling more relevant [because of increased awareness] in the social media age than it did at the time. TND tended to be a film generally regarded as 'fine' compared to the beloved Goldeneye and the divisive TWINE and DAD so it probably fell though the cracks a little [and it came out against 'Titanic']. Personally I feel the film is very '1997' in style and tone so probably not that useful for Eon regarding Bond 26 tbh but people are free to disagree. I would say that for the general public Brosnan is only 'Goldeneye' [maybe due to the N64 game too]. Goldeneye was the 4th highest grossing film in the 60th anniversary re-releases but his other 3 were in the bottom 6.
Amusingly even though Desperate Housewives was shown on channel 4, ITV tried to cash in on Teri Hatcher being in both that show and TND by showing the film as often as it could for a while!
@@jamesatkinsonja NO JAMES NO, TND is the best ever Bond movie in the entire wolrd and even David Zaritsky's thinks its the best aswell. You were meant to be on my side james, how could you. Tin the words of Stacey "JAAAMES, DON'T LEAVE ME, JAAAAMES"
No you are very right though, I think lots of people at the mo want things to go back the way they were but they cant. Especially since Kids today have grown up with Daniel Craig, they wont be too happy if the next movie doesnt have some resemblance to his era. after all not many people will have time to watch all the movies and will only see the high lights. Like you say ...Goldeneye will be remebered more for the better compared to the others and the N64 game helped tremendously on that one @@jamesatkinsonja
@@DafyddBrooks Lol! I did forget to add they do a similar thing to the ending of TND with NTTD where Bond teams up with a female agent to storm the base [as oppose to the earlier movies where they would be more 'battle' sequences with several soldiers] although the Bond-Nomi dynamic is very different.
The smoking line at the start "filthy habit" has always bugged me. If Bond doesn't smoke because it's setting a bad example to the 1990s film going audience, just leave out the gag. I dunno, the guy didn't have to be smoking. He could have been repairing a plane or vehicle and Bond punches him.
Rapper Pras [from the Fugees] 1998 song 'Blue Angels' references TND ['Tomorrow Never Dies when she reveals her eyes, Keep your eyes on the prize...'] which might be the closest we ever get to a James Bond rap song! [nothing against rap but it doesn't really fit with the series].

The hairstyle, the sound...yeah, it is understandable that Calvin would yank his 'old reaction video' of this (and others) from his channel. The theme of this film is arguably more relevant now than back then (e.g. Zuckerberg, Musk, James Murdock, and other lesser known megalomanical media barons).
It's always been a relevant theme in media+ politics [Citizen Kane was about the media in the 40's] and real life [Rupert Murdock bought his first UK newspaper in 1969] but certainly with social media were much more aware of it now.
In fairness she's an unknown in the UK [I only know who she is as Dutch Bond fan mentioned her in his review]. Similar to how Oliver Skeete's cameo in 'Die Another Day' wouldn't register for people outside the UK. A fun example-The people clamping the car in TWINE that Bond soaks were real life ''love to hate' car clampers from a UK reality TV show at the time so while UK audiences would find the gag even funner, international [and modern audiences as that show has faded into obscurity] probably assumed they were just extras.
12:39 This does not count as 'discrepancy', since the series has been REBOOTED (Bond did not marry Tracey, nor did he score in top tier of any "Oriental languages".
The Connery-Brosnan series are implied to be the same continuity operating on 'comic book time'. Goldeneye was a 'soft reboot' in that the old continuity was implied to be still there but downplayed. In the next film TWINE, Bond is asked if he's lost someone close to him and he's implied to be thinking of Tracy. In contrast, Craig was a 'hard' reboot which ignored the earlier films.
@@bonghunezhou5051Looking into it, the Raymond Benson's novelisation actually mentions the degree discrepancy saying Bond was lying back in YOLT and doesn't actually have the degree. Technically all the first 20 films happen to the same Bond [and the other characters re-cast like Felix and Moneypenny], but not in a linear timeline [so Goldeneye's pre-title sequence is technically set between 'View to a kill' and 'Living Daylights']. The writers of TWINE confirmed Brosnan's Bond was married to Tracy ['In Electra he thinks he's found Tracy, but he's actually found Blofeld'] and you have Brosnan interacting with Connery era gadgets as if he used them in 'Die Another Day'. It's a game but 'Everything or Nothing' also has Brosnan's Bond refer to 'View to a Kill' and tackle Jaws again. But despite all that the continuity of the first 20 Bond's was fairly loose and 'Goldeneye' was certainly a 'soft' reboot so if you want to see Brosnan as a separate timeline that's perfectly fine.
The Q branch scene in Die Another Day where Bond is looking at gadgets from the earlier movies confirms that Brosnan is in fact playing the same Bond that Connery first played in Dr. No.
@@spencerkindra8822 It is totally alright if _you_ wish to consider Pierce's films as part of the continuity that started with Sean's (timeline takes precedence over background props, IMHO).

Rare making To morrow never dies sounds amazing :)
90s Teri Hatcher was the bomb.
😻
The "tomorrow never lies" thing is IN the official documentary bonus feature - "Inside Tomorrow Never Dies". That confirms it, no?
A Belated Happy Birthday Calvin 🍹🍷🥃
Never been the first viewer to a TH-cam video I didn’t make myself 🎉
I was about to mention your ads from temu but hten you clarified that you havent looked those up lmao 😂
I don't know why people hate on the bad guy. The actor looked like he was enjoying every minute of every word he would say. He looks like he is savoring his Lines haha. Love it
Give us all the old review videos they are great
#ReleaseTheDysonCut
Yeah Calvin’s gonna react to all of them. I’m so excited
I must say there were some jokes in this old review that had me laughing. Past Calvin definitely had the charisma I remember.
If Bond had a sidekick, that would be you.
You gotta review Goldfinger 64. The spy who loved me 64 is coming out soon. Both unnoficial fan remakes, but they're so well done in the style of goldeneye I think it's definitely worth your time.
Thought we were going to avoid the swear jar with this one, but nope! 😁
you should to top 10 Underrated James Bond characters
Great video, Calvin! Hope you had a great birthday yesterday. I watched Octopussy and then saw a tribute to Roger Moore and remembered it was his birthday- and yours!
I enjoy visiting your Lost Media wiki pages. Unpopular opinion, but I don’t think you’re that wooden in your older videos. I think your passion and enthusiasm still shines through. And besides, you were in the beginning stages of your TH-cam career, so you were still adjusting to it.
It's a bike chain cleaner.
I get the same adverts.
Bring the Yorkshire accent back!
FER YORKSHIRE!!
12:55 Bond learnt Japanese at Cambridge, not Chinese. Both languages are slightly different, so the gag does half make sense.
He got a First in Oriental Languages, so maybe that included Cantonese and/or Mandarin.
I miss the long debates with David, any plans for something similar in near future?😀
I enjoy seeing the appreciation for Jonathan Pryce in TND in these videos. I've always felt like an outlier for being a fan of his performance in this film. I usually see a lot of negativity when people comment on Carver.
Yeah Carver’s a terrific villain!!
Outstanding
Another great video! Love these retrospect reviews of reviews 🤣.
I agree with you completely I find it hard not to go for Octopussy or Tomorrow Never Dies when looking for a film. Although I do always watch for your eyes only too. Particularly love Conti's score. The 70s disco over the PTS... brilliant.
Tomorrow never dies; All my childhood. One of the top bond movies ever. 9/10
Reacting to your old The Man with the Golden Gun review next? 😁
No Time to Lie
I don't think that's an adult dummy. Maybe somebody knows what it is? Those ads just randomly change every day. It's not based on the text.
It doesn't seem right them Tossing away the ppk the way they did
Its almost a passing moment
I still find it amazing that Tomorrow Never Dies gets so much love and I don't really understand why 😄 TND must be for me what From Russia With Love is for you
By 'eck, keep forgetting your Yorkshire roots! Champion...
Calvin I think the reason you come back to TND is Carver. Perhaps the best Bond movies have the best combination of Bond, Villian, and Bond girl. If that's true then yes.. TND is awesome :)
If you get the chance listen to Letter to Paris from the Tomorrow Never Dies game soundtrack
Calvin, I can’t find the video of which Bond is Objectively the best
He said in a recent Q&A video [26th August 2023 at 29:50-31:00] he decided not to do it.
He said in his q and a he couldn’t figure out how to do it
Greatness of my nostalgia memories of your video of favorite James bond movie adventure TND 18 James bond movie adventure entry tomorrow never dies your Old video tomorrow never dies Calvin Dyson one my favorite watch your video I have a lot of nostalgia with this I love this video same with The world is not enough your old video makes me praise pierce brosnan James bond movie adventure 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😎 amazing Calvin Dyson
While I do enjoy the content you upload on a basis that fits your schedule, I was just wondering...
When's your next indepth James Bond film review? 🥺👉👈
Hopefully in December or January
Your point in the original video about how you like Tomorrow Never Dies the same way you like Octopussy makes total sense because those movies share a lot of DNA. They're the most fun yet still quasi grounded movies of their respective actors. Then if you look at A View To A Kill and Die Another Day both movies are much more ridiculous.
*JOY*
Awww Bieber cut Calvin 😅
Not half as bad as you think it is.
Madonna sort of raps on Die Another Day. "Sigmund Freud analyse this".
I bond big fan i sub to you
Thank you! I really do appreciate it!
I like youre content but i hope if you made reviews of other genres in movies i think youre channel will grow more you have amazing knowledge in cinema !
His Non-Bond reviews have covered a wide range of genres in fairness [he's done reviews of Zardoz and 'The Man Who would be king' for example] but agreed, he's very knowledgeable about films and is a you to listen to. He was also a member of the 'Diminishing returns' podcast for a time].
Do "the Saint" tv show starring Roger Moore
Pryce is one of my least favorite villains and Hatcher is quite bad, but otherwise agree with many of young Calvin's observations 😊
👍👍👍🎥
Stamper was crap henchman bullion and gabor were better henchmens
The hairstyle, the sound...yeah, it is understandable that Calvin would yank his 'old reaction video' of this (and others) from his channel.
The theme of this film is arguably more relevant now than back then (e.g. Zuckerberg, Musk, James Murdock, and other lesser known megalomanical media barons).
It's always been a relevant theme in media+ politics [Citizen Kane was about the media in the 40's] and real life [Rupert Murdock bought his first UK newspaper in 1969] but certainly with social media were much more aware of it now.
Is't a great review, still, but fails because it doesn't mention Daphne Deckers.
@@jamesatkinsonja GoldenEye states that Brosnan had been JB in *1986* - thus establishing that his Bond is set in a separate reality/timeline.
Didn’t you have any lights when you recorded your original videos 😂
