I played the first 3 gens of Pokemon as they came out and I tend to agree. Gen 3's starters had spunk. Mudkip was the perfect stand-in for Totodile, Treeko was literally the archetypal "cool anime character" in gecko form and Torchic was this adorable fire chicken with jois de vivre (who then turns into my favourite final evolution). Good point.

Really enjoyed the video! Personally I would have put Hoenn a lot higher, I think all 3 are really solid designs that are cute & cool. My personal favorites have got to be the Sinnoh starters, Diamond & Pearl were my first Pokémon games and I just think all 3 of them have such great designs. I loved Monkeys as a kid so I’ve always been a huge Chimchar fan, especially as I lean toward Fire type starters, though both Turtwig and Piplup are super cute!
Swampert is my favorite. And op. But I’ve only played the first 3 generations.
As someone who didn’t play a whole lot of Gen 3 when it came out, I think mudkip looks kinda derpy, to the point of not even cute derpy. And if it weren’t for the anime, I think Treecko would be the same. But it’s all subjective.

I'm feeling personally attacked that Totodile wasn't ranked higher. He barely managed to top Bulbasaur when I was a kid and I've been a Totodile stan ever since
I'm a pretty dedicated Grass Starter person but Totodile is one of my favorite starters despite that.
Totodile is not only my favorite starter, but it's my second favorite Pokemon of all time. For the record, Dragonite is my favorite Pokemon.
Mainly a grass starter myself but water usually comes close second, Totodile is my favorite water starter. Absolutely love the huge gremlin/chaotic nature and personality it has. Plus Crocodilians are the best thing

I simply like Popplio a lot and when Brionne was introduced. I fell in love with the entire line and I regard Brionne as one of my all time favorite Pokémon

The gen 2 trio is my personal favorite. Totodile is the cutest thing I've ever seen and Cyndaquil is adorably shy. Chikorita isn't that great but she's still cute. My least favorite has to be gen 4. I just don't like any of them
Why does everyone bash on Chikorita? She’s one of the few base form Pokemon that still looks good when they evolve. Much cuter than a splotched skinned wart covered Bulbasaur evolution.

Probably because it’s the worst starter in the game and doesn’t have an alternate typing to boot.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Chikorita, and Bayleef is awesome, but I think they dropped the ball with Meganium.
Totodile is absolutely amazing, Chikorita is one of the most underrated and over-disliked Pokemon I have seen. Bayleef is a top tier Pokemon design and Meganium is ultra sweet & loving.
@@RolfeSenpai Not true at all. In original Gen 2 Totodile is the worst. Why? Because it was before the Physical/Special split. Totodile's evolutionary line is all physical with a typing, Water, that was only special attacks. This made Totodile's line worthless in original Gen 2. It was only until the remake that it became viable in any way.

Gen 3 is probably my favorite, I love all 3 starters and their final evolutions.
Fennekin will always be my favorite starter, because Delphox is my favorite Pokemon of all time. I just love the idea of a fox with fur resembling a wizard's robe.
Also, I just had a thought. Remember that duck fakemon that got bought by Temtem? You think Quaxxly was designed that way to set it apart from it?
Delphox is my least favorite Pokémon, I want to gouge my eyes out when I see it. But if you like it that’s cool bro.

I like next to no fire starters actually. I know, they’re always the most popular, but it’s VERY rare for me to go for them BECAUSE of that.
Gen 1: Squirtle
Gen 2: Totodile
Gen 3: Treeko
Gen 4: Turtwig
Gen 5: much closer but Snivy wins out
Gen 6: Fennekin
Gen 7: Poplio
Gen 8: yes I did cave on fire because soccer bunny was too good to pass up.
I often WANT to go for the unpopular ones. (Except gen 1 and all 3 are given too much attention if you ask me at this point) Some I knew outright were unpopular for good reason. Like Meganium. Or the other 2 completely overshadowed one. Like Turtwig by Chimchar and Piplup. Or how Poplio was overshadowed too. Primarina is my favorite gen 7 mon no questions asked. It’s SO fun to use.

Gen 5 is like my favorite gen, but the starters are personally the weakest part of those games for me. They’re personally my lowest ranked starters.

I always go with the water starters. They're always my favouites - especially Popplio, Sobble, and Squirtle. Team Squirtle FOREVER! I'm excited to try out Quaxly in a few months too.

I like the Kalos starters the most. I skipped gens 3 - 5, and gen 6 was the first time I got back into the series since Gold. Chespin was my starter, and I thought it was cool to have a mammalian grass starter for the first time.
I would really love for you to rank the middle and the final evos to see if there will be any changes, which, from what I understood from your explanations, very easily could happen. I really enjoyed that vid and even though I disagree in many parts I really appreciate the support the love for Piplup because it reigns superior. ♥

Gens 1, 3, and 4 have by far the best starter lineup. They are all so clean looking and have simple yet iconic design inspirations. Gens 5, 7 and 9 are middle of the road solid ideas but lacking in some areas. Gens 2, 6, and 8 are the most underwhelming in my opinion. Although base forms like cyndaquil and totodile are some of my favs despite their evolutions.

I really like the Johto starters. Silver was my first Pokemon game, so nostalgia definitely plays a role here, but I always really liked Cyndaquil and Totodile in particular. Cyndaquil was my first Pokemon and it always seemed more like a porcupine than a rodent based Pokemon. Plus, Typhlosion has always been a pretty reliable starter. Seeing Cyndaquil get more love in Legends Arceus makes me so happy too. Totodile was easily the cutest Water starter until Oshawott came. Popplio is also my favorite Water starter. I can understand not liking how it looks like a clown or blows bubbles, but I just always found it to be incredibly cute and its evolved forms made me love it more.
Same with me. Hisuian Typhlosion became one of my favorite starters and I already liked the original.

I was not expecting my favorite gen to be in 1st place pokémon black and white, is this what approval feels like.
My choice-Gen 3-is also 100% nostalgia-based. When I was younger, my family didn’t have much money, so while I played the beginnings of Red, Yellow, and I think Silver on friends’ devices, I never even got as far as the first gym, and of course I couldn’t save it. When I was 11 or 12, I got my very first Nintendo device: a refurbished GameBoy Advance. Naturally, I wanted to go get a Pokémon game to go with it! The selection at my local gaming store wasn’t great, but they did happen to have copies of the latest games to release: Ruby and Sapphire. I chose Sapphire because it was my birthstone, and my brother opted for Ruby (I think he liked how Groudon looked). My first Pokémon was Mudkip (waaaay before the meme). Since I’d never gotten very far in any of the previous games, it was all totally new to me, and it made me want to play the other games all the way through even more!
TLDR I’m a huge fan of Mudkip and my Swampert is basically my rock 😍

yeah i think this can be turned around a lot based on that, since some definitely has weaker mids or end evolutions.

I like the Gen 2 starters the most because mostly for nolstagic but also for the design and have been helpful and useful Pokemon (mostly Cyndaquil, but Chikorita has been helpful in a randomizer nuzlocke run)

I’ve grown to actually have a preference for Popplio and Fenniken since they were both my absolute strongest starters ever when going through my gen 6 and 7 playthroughs in recent memory. The fire-psychic combo for Delphox is insane in late game Kalos and Primarina’s water-fairy combination would sweep everything it touched.
I'm actually very much in the same boat with that; Fennekin is the only time I've preferred the Fire starter Pokemon of a trio (Froakie is alright, don't get me wrong, but I think Greninja is a bit overrated, and that Delphox and Chesnaught really should have been given their own counterpart forms to Ash-Greninja to level the playing field between the three); Fire/Psychic is also a nice deviation from the horde of Fire-Fighting themed starters, something Incineroar follows up on with Fire/Dark.
The Popplio line remains my favorite Water starter, having dethroned the first line of Water starters I've ever played with (that being the Mudkip line); cute, graceful but potent in its later evolutions, and the Gen 7 lineup having their own unique Z-Moves gives them something to set them apart from the other series of starters.
As for Grass, that I'm undecided on. It's another off-pick type for me, but the main starter I've done Grass with is Snivy [having been between both them and Oshawott in the Gen 5 games]. It's possible that Sprigatito will win out as the preferred Grass starter for me, but I don't really have a strong opinion on the Gen 9 starters beyond that because we have yet to see any of their evolved forms, right? So time will tell on that one-
Hilariously, my problem with both of those pokemon is the same: Their line works so much better as females, but the male bias on starters kills it.
It's kind of like seeing a male Gardevoir or a female Mr. Mime..it just rubs the brain the wrong way.

I like most the starters I feel gen 4 had the best selection. I barely even played Gen 4 but Infernape, and Empoleon are both really good, and Torterra is plenty good for a playthrough at least, even with the big ice weakness.
Yeah i wish more Pokemon had a balance like them. True Torterra despite being my favorite of the 3 has a ton of weaknesses, but it was a good attempt at adhering to the RPG aspects. Torterra weak to fire has ground to beat Infernape, Infernape has fighting to combat Empoleon's steel despite being water too, Empoleon... well steel doesn't beat grass or ground, in fact steel is weak to ground, but every water type in existence (unless gimmicky like Magicarp) can learn ice type moves so I don't think it's a big deal. I keep hoping they do this for a new set of starters.
I personally really like the Gen 5 starters the most. Emboar is decent but Samurott is my 2nd favorite water type starter and Serperior is my favorite grass starter.
I used to think samurott was lame but then in conversation someone mentioned his swords. Having not watched the anime I had no idea until I googled it that day that samurott is actually a total badass.

Ready to fight over a lot of this list. Totadile is precious and the anime just amplified how endearing it is for me every time Ash’s would jump out and started excitedly kicking and waving its arms.

At first i was like "Oh, this tier list isn't too controversial", but then everything kept getting ranked above the Hoenn starters. Even the Gen 6 ones - it's hard to grasp that opinions can diverge that far

Finally! Someone who agrees with me on Black and white and it's starters! Oshawott is my all time fave starter line. Though I like Dewott better then the final form, I still love them all.
Wow...you have some opinions alright, lol. But in all seriousness, here's my rankings by Gen from least to most favorite. Based only on first stages.
9. Gen 5 - The only gen where I like NONE of the starters (worst is Oshawott)
8. Gen 4 - Piplup's cool, but Turtwig & Chimcar both suck.
7. Gen 6 - Fennekin's great, but Froakie's just not. And Chespin is worst overall starter.
6. Gen 1 - They're kinda boring. I like Squirtle & Charmander, but Bulbasaur does nothing for me.
5. Gen 7 - Popplio's the best by far, though I love Litten too. Not big into Rowlet.
4. Gen 3 - Not huge into Treecko, but still like it. LOVE Torchic, & like Mudkip.
3. Gen 8 - GrookeyGang, but I do love Sobble. Okay with Scorbunny too.
2. Gen 9 - Not sold on Quaxly, but I love Sprigatito & my fave is Fuecoco
1. Gen 2 - The only gen where I genuinely love all three starters (fave is Chikorita)

Small detail, but I love how the colors in the gradients of the starter trios simulate the games they come from.
Got my respect for putting 5's at the top. I agree I think they're first stage designs are really good, what type of animals they are and also each being uniquely different from each other in design and represent their types well!

A list ranking each INDIVIDUAL starter rather than the trios would've been a lot more interesting.
Snivy is my favorite starter and Pokemon in general. The first game I played and the other two just didn't look appealing (and still don't to me). Also I love Popplio. I got a really fun circus vibe, and I was hoping it would stick with the circus vibe. Then it turned into a pop-star and I was confused and disappointed-

I recommend a ranking of each region's Pokemon designs instead of just starters to find out which one has the best overall Pokemon designs
So cool to see what someone else thinks of the generation I grew up with. I did find myself wishing that all the numbers above the trios would have also shown us which generation they're from too/after.
ex. 5, 1, 4, 8, 9, 6, 7, 3, 2
Gen 2 are all the best. None have been as good and I think they’re even superior to Gen 1.
Edit: I just remembered that EEVEE was a starter Pokemon. Eevee is always the best choice.
Chikorita is objectively the worst starter in the series when it comes to battles, Cindaquill is literally just Charmander with worse moves while Totodile depends if you play the original or remakes on how good it is as it's a physical water type with like no good physical moves in the original Gen 2 games.

Totodile is adorable and a total gremlin and spazz and I think all the Crocodilians in the Pokemon games are great. Chikorita I think is such a sweetheart with a smile to melt hearts and I like her big leaf on her head.

My answers change on an almost daily basis, but for now, here's how I'm feeling. I'm also gonna rank all the Starters from favorite to least favorite:
9. Kalos: Froakie, Fennikin, Chespin - None of these Pokemon really grabbed me. As someone whose favorite Pokemon type is grass and who more often than not goes with the grass starter, Chespin is the only Grass starter I actively dislike and was a major disappointment for me, this gen. Froakie was more so chosen out of not really liking the other two.
8. Galar: Grookey, Scorbunny, Sobble - As a Legends of the Hidden Temple fan, I had to go with the green monkey! The others are whatever.
7. Gen 9: Sprigatito, Fuecoco, Quaxly - Will most likely change as I get more acquainted with them, overtime. A solid group, but don't have much of an opinion on them, yet.
6. Hoenn: Treecko, Mudkip, Torchic - I feel like if this gen came out today, Mudkip would be my favorite. I still like Treecko, but everything I like about it is done better with Snivy.
5. Kanto: Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Charmander - Bulbasaur is also my favorite Pokemon of all time! I also love Squirtle, but Charmander (more so Charizard) is one of my least favorite Pokemon, which is why Kanto is ranked as low as it is.
4. Sinnoh: Chimchar, Turtwig, Piplup - By far the hardest decision I had to make, when choosing a starter. Nowadays, it's no contest. Chimchar is my favorite Pokemon of all time in the anime and I adore it in the games, to this day. I still love Turtwig, but Chimchar will always be my number one for this gen. I really loved Piplup at first, but have since grown lukewarm to it. I still like it, just not on par with the other two.
3. Unova: Snivy, Oshawott, Tepig - All incredibly solid. I flat out couldn't pick between Snivy and Oshawott when Black and White first came out, so I picked up both games on launch so I could go on a journey with both (and then B2W2 came out... *sigh*)
2. Alola: Popplio, Rowlet, Litten - Pretty much tied with Unova. I adore my precious clown princess and I'll continue to defend the entire Popplio evolutionary line until the end of time! I love the ball owl, as well. I honestly couldn't choose between the two of them when playing Moon for the first time and had to do some trading to get both of them on my team (and then USUM got announced... *SIGH*). Litten is great as well, but I adore the other two LEAGUES more than it.
1. Johto: Cyndaquil, Totodile, Chikorita - I think Gen 2 overall has the best designed Pokemon. The devs had the experience from working on gen 1, but still had a plethora of ideas that have yet to be explored. While I think I like Popplio and Rowlet more than these three starters, all 3 of the Johto starters have great designs and have personal stories attached to them. Totodile is one of my favorite Pokemon in the anime for its adorable voice and great personality. Chikorita's evolved form Bayleef is also lovable in the anime, but I got even more attached to it when playing Pokemon Colosseum for the first time and it really got to shine in a way that only would've been possible in a game that's entirely double battles. And Cyndaquil... it was the Pokemon I became when diving into the world of Mystery Dungeon for the first time, which was a very monumental and emotional experience for me, first time around. It's my go to partner in Gold and Silver, it continues to have great moments in the awesome Pokemon Chronicles anime spinoff and in Legends Arceus. All around, I adore these starters. And I look forward to creating even more memories with Pokemon I've yet to go on a journey, yet. That's what makes the world of Pokemon so enjoyable for me.

I really enjoyed this type of format. Really good idea for filling in those gaps for a while too. Just use stuff like this and top 10s and such to temp fill the gaps. If you use this ranking idea, you can poll for the topic via patreon, Twitter, etc and ask for what to make it about. Example. If you say best jrpgs ranked. Your poll could be to have dragonquest, Final fantasy, etc listed (or have people add to the list) then you take the 8 to 10 biggest ones and rank them like this. I actually prefer this ranking method you did over a standard top 10 video because it just felt better. You were able to compare the new entry to the existing ones more clearly and place it where it ought to be. I would like to see more of these for sure. Idk what the content of them would be. Best versions of link? Best games of a series (megaman (x) games, final fantasy games, resident evil, any series really)? Idk. That's for you to decide since it's your channel. But this format was actually what drew me more than the content of the video. Idc about pokemon as much as some folks but it was still interesting to watch because of HOW you did it rather than WHAT it was about. If that makes sense. Hopefully this helps in some way. I was curious as to what you'd be doing after NG+ wrapped up to keep the schedule going. Another idea for generic filler videos would be to tackle dlc on previously completed titles and you can open a video saying what the old rating was and adjust it based on the dlc addition. Sometimes dlc knocks it out of the park. Sometimes it just adds more grind than it's worth with a list of new crap to do with varying levels of payoff. Idk. Again. Just spitballing
