Gen 4 is VERY overrated. it's slow, ugly, the new pokemon look stupid and ugly, all those unnecessary cross-gen evolutions, way too many legendaries, a boring region, stupid uniforms for the evil team, worst box legends ever. Gen 4 has the most forgettable pokemon ever. Do you remember Cherrim? Or burmy? Or Ambipom? Snover? Chatot? Carnivine? Of course not, because they looked like generic, forgettable animals. The starters were great and the underground was a neat concept. I'll give them that, but that's it. It's the second worst gen of the first five.

Gen 3 is about 20 years old, gen 5 is about 12 years old. The kids who grew up in that range of games are in the biggest social media demographics currently, therefore it makes sense that gens 3-5 were remembered so favorably. I'd be interested to see how/if the results differ in about 10-15 more years

Gen 4 is my favorite. But I started as a gen 2 kid. Gen 4's Legendries actually felt like legendries. Gods and very powerful creatures. The events for many of them were not just given away like legendries today, but once you received your event items, you actually had to go locate and capture them. Too bad the Arceus event never did get released officially.

eh idk, most of what you say also applies to Gen 3 except the legendaries were more like forces of nature or just other powerful living beings living in the world rather than almighty gods controlling the universe.
One felt a little too comically powerful for me to be able to have as a pet and battle others with.
But then again, I started with Gen 3 (though the remakes first), so I'm probably just biased.

This video and these results perfectly reflect the landscape of the Pokémon fan that consumes Pokémon content on TH-cam and engages on Pokémon discussions on Twitter. The top three Gens, 3 4 and 5, are simply the most mainstream generations of the TH-cam/Social Media side of the fandom, and it has to do with mostly two things: insanely good replayability and the perfect pinch of nostalgia.
Most of us grew with Pokémon, and most of us have nostalgia for the games we were born and grew with. Most of the people around the age that consume videos and talk about Pokémon on Twitter and etc started on one of this three generations. Plus, the replayability of those three generations is insanely high, being games extremely easy to pick up again and re-consume. And I don't mean this exclusively on the game themselves, not at all! We are constantly replaying these games everytime we watch a video of them. We are re-experiencing them! And it is a fact that most Pokémon content on TH-cam that is mainstream, easily consumable and re-makeable stems from these three generations. Think of every nuzlocke video, every ROM hack video, every challenge video, every viral video from Alpharad or JaidenAnimations, and notice how 90% of them are played in these exact three generations.
I'd honestly love to see if there's a way of record the opinion of the "Pokémon player that doesn't consume Pokémon content online" and see if they align in any shape or form with this opinion, which is OUR opinion, the Online Pokémon Content Consumer Opinion.

      Also one word: Emulation
Gen 3 is by far the easiest to emulate to the point little timmy on his phone can start playing pokemon "charizard version" like the one he saw on TV, this also applies to gen 4 and 5 since DS Emulation can be ran even in a potato. Meanwhile gen 1 and 2 also can run in a potato but are seen as Old and clunky, something rarely said about gen 3 bar the phys/special split but like half of the fanbase doesnt even know what a special attack is.
Gen 6 and 7 can also be emulated but they require a stronger machine and are harder to set up on phone, little timmy wont find a Pokemon Y Iso. (And let's not mention switch emulation).
In the end, emulation is what many fans play especially the casual ones, and gen 3-5 happen to fit the perfect quota of being super easy to emulate while still holding up to the average viewer.

    • @maximumbeans9310
      @maximumbeans9310 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think you're right and there's a little bit more to it, too. There's a ton of 'older' fans like me who started with Gen 1 when they were old enough to pick up the games, I was about 5 or 6 years old when I got hooked on the series. So when Gens 3, 4, and 5 rolled around in my region, I was about 11, 15, and 18 respectively. While nostalgia does play a slight factor in how I remember these games (I'm 30 now), I still replay them and have just as much fun.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that those Gens get the double whammy of having fans who grew up with them as entry points, AND fans who played them as established series veterans and enjoyed them for their quality coming on in leaps and bounds from the beginning Gameboy titles, if that makes sense. It's like they get the sweet spot of overlapping types of favourable opinion.

Gen III will always be my favourite, and I've been a fan since the beginning. I honestly do think it's the best generation. Hoenn is probably the most diverse/experimental region, the new pokemon introduced were excellent, and they introduced a lot of staples that are still used to this day - the legendaries playing a huge part in the story for example, which did admittedly start getting stale, even in Gen IV, but as a new concept in Gen III it was amazing.

I was born with gen 1. I think it's unfair to compare it to anything that came later. You really had to be there to feel the excitement of the cards, anime, games all releasing for the first time. I was about 7-8 when my older brother gave me my first card (tangela) and I was obsessed. Made my parents buy me red version at target and not only that, we had to pay for it before we could resume shopping so I could play it in the store.
Gen 2 had a similar build up of excitement while we waited for its release. Same going into Gen 3. That's kind of where that feeling stopped for me even though I bought every main series game after that.
I'd really like to know the age and which Gen all the people who voted were born with. I guarantee most adults in their late 20's & up didn't "dislike" Gen 1 they just didn't participate in your poll.

I’m in my late 20s and grew up with Gen.1 and it hasn’t aged well for me. In comparison to newer regions, Kanto feels bland and basic. LGPE didn’t even add to the story or history of Kanto. The nostalgia I had has been killed by the overemphasis of Gen.1 in the past 3 generations with most mega evolutions (until ORAS) and Gigantamax forms being Kanto Pokémon. I get that it’s important to the franchise because it’s how it got started but we don’t need to have it shoved down our throats every new generation. It made sense for Gen.7 being the 20 year anniversary but Gen.8 didn’t need to shove down our throats more. I’m glad that Gen.9 so far appears to be moving on from this and giving love to Gen.2

I'm in my mid 20s and started with Gen 2 and soon after that Gen 1. The first 3 Gens were my childhood but I'm playing all the other Gens at the moment and only 8 and 6 are left.
I have to say that it's hard to compare new Games to Games that are older than me.
Gen was amazing and still is, the original games didn't age well with their bugs and lack of good gameplay but it was the base of every other game and the story and Pokemon are the best to this date.
My beloved Gen 2 isn't as holy as it was. I love Typhlosion but today I think he's only mediocre and also the story is only ok.
Though the soundtrack is the best in the first 3 Gens.
Of course there are many improvements but we mostly like Pokemon because of several reasons and two of the most important are nostalgia and the Pokémon themselves.
That's why the older Gens are so good, because they just were amazing.
My ranking(I included the best game of every Gen.
      Hoeen > Johto > Alola > Kanto > Unova > Sinnoh > Paldea
Kalos and Galar I never played but would be up to place 6-9.

I feel like the Gen2 fall is just a result of the age shift in the fanbase. I could be wrong, but I foresee a similar thing happening with Gen4. As my older age group continues to age out (being around since Gen1), the Gen4 fans are in that nostalgic sweet spot we were in a decade ago. We’ll see how this all shifts in another decade

Sun and Moon (by and large the Ultra Games) were so refreshing to me. Had a good story, mechanics were at their peak (mega evolution and z-moves), world design was inspired and fun to explore (I collected all Zygard cells and totem stickers). It was just a great entry in the series, and while base Sun and Moon's post game was lacklustre, it was improved on with Rainbow Rocket. Overall, I think the Ultra games are the better iterations, but I bias towards certain narrative elements of Base S/M (not to mention that I spent so much time in them working on competitive builds that I wasn’t bothered to transfer over to the Ultra Games).
But as a straight-shoot Pokemon game I’d recommend that embodies the franchise, I think HG/SS are the quintessential entries. Has so much high quality content, 2 regions, tons of post game content, etc. After that, ORAS or B/W2.

For me what I like the most in a pokemon game are:
-the region, designs and exploration of the routes, cities and locations.
-the sence of adventure and freedom.
    -the gyms puzzles.
    -a well balance pokedex.
    -side activities (pokeacthlon, PWT)
-cool thing to find after the game ends.
Which are all things that Gen 5, Gen 4 and to a certain extent Gen 3 have. Most of this things are lacking in the recent games

My ranking would be (only counting main series games and no remakes) I also don't hate anyone for liking any of the games below. I don't hate the games per se in the lower ranks I just hate playing through some of these games because it feels like a chore (ultra sun would propably be the worst offender on its own but I took my aggregated feelings for the whole generation)
      1. Gen 5 (they are just too good story and gameplay wise it's so much fun playing through them)
      2. Gen 2 (pure nostalgia and I just love Johto as a place in the pokemon world)
      3. Gen 7 (I really hate the ultra games but the OG sun and moon are awesome)
      4. Gen 1 (it's fast and easy to play through and is a nice breeze of fresh air mechanic wise and the bugs give it a nice charm)
      5. Gen 3 (I like the battlefrontier the rest aged badly spacially the story)
      6. Gen 6 (I enjoyed playing it but it's story is a dumbster fire)
      7. Gen 8 (it's boring but it had at least some good quality of life changes for competitive play)
      8. Gen 4 (diamond and pearl are the worst pokemon games in a gameplay and story perspective its a hazzle to play through. Platinum is fine except for the excruciatingly long loading sequences. One thing they did well with these games is the physical special split and the some of the pokemon designs are awesome)
      Slots 6,7,8 are interchangable.

I really liked gen 4 because I think that’s when the franchise made big game changes like the physical and special split, pokewalker, wifi trading and battling online and bringing that in to hgss (gen 1,2) really helped modernize Pokémon. Gen 3 was also great for Pokémon because they included Pokémon colosseums and gen 1 remakes really exploring how they continue to grow Pokémon
I would say those two are my favorite, gen 5 being third also, the newer gems haven’t been as good as they have been pretty easy to beat and not as difficult as 4.3,5

I’m not sure whether I would give that as reason I like gen 4 itself though. It was obviously important in the same way that X and Y were important for modernising Pokemon. However making big steps in the right direction also generally result in a lack of refinement in other areas. I find that even though Gen 4 was a huge step up from Gen 3, I think Gen 5 did what Gen 4 did right, while improving in other areas. At least that’s how I justify why I have the most fun with them

Grew up with Pokemon Gold as my first and recently finished Legends Arceus. Generations 1 and 2 were great for their time, but generations 3 and 5 were absolutely the best in my eyes. Art direction, music direction, Pokemon designs, etc. were all on point. I liked 4 a lot, but Sinnoh had pacing issues and they never fixed the scaling issues with the HGSS remakes. Generation 6 was when it started declining but I do think that SM/USUM are very underrated once generation 7 launched. Sword and Shield were decent with all DLC and I liked L:A a lot so generation 8 was solid. I won't even talk about S&V though...

If I'd just look at the region and the Pokemon design it would probably be gen 3 but the physical/special split is the single best new feature any generation has brought to battleing, imo. I think gen 4s superiority over other comes from the fact that it was the best time to be an actual Pokemon fan with amazing content overall. Even though dp was sluggish, it was quickly fixed with the Platinum's release, physical special split made all 400 Pokemon at the time feel brand new due to the major switch in viability. HGSS is still considered as one of the best games ever created. Anime, even though had way too many fillers were still hitting hard with Paul Ash dynamics and having some of the best characters overall like Dawn and Cynthia. And who can forget the goldmine of spinoffs such as PMD series and countless others. We were genuinely happy with the overall time period of gen 4 in whole unlike gen 7 (which started solid but ended weak) or gen 8 ( which started weak and ended great with LA)

I feel gen 1 and 2 to be overrated and I was 8 when blue and red came out. It was amazing for the time but they did not age well and are difficult to enjoy these days.
I think gen 3 was absolutely amazing and it’s the earliest gen I can go back and enjoy to this day, I thought emerald was the best game for a long time and it still holds its place up there for me. I felt gen 4 was slow and tedious, and that was with platinum. I played gen 1-3 many many times over but after platinum I couldn’t do it again. The story/lore and legendary designs were awesome. HGSS were probably the best of gen 4, I very much enjoyed them.
Gen 5 is absolutely incredible, they are my new all time fav games in the series. I just played black 1 and white 2 recently and my god they are def the peak.
I didn’t play x and y yet, they are on my to do. But I did play omega ruby and it was pretty cool, it was a good remake but I don’t see myself replying it.
I didn’t play any of the sun or moon games yet, so no opinion on them, but I loved let’s go eevee/pikachu. I know they get a lot of hate but I’m also a huge pogo player and it was a great fun twist on the genre.
Gen 8 is complicated I feel. Sword and shield were wayyyy too easy while leveling but the wild area was super addictive for a long time. I think that was a great piece of content. I don’t think a play through of these games even compared to gen3,4, and 5 but the best thing is the entry into competitive is made as easy as possible which is an amazing thing on its own. I just wish they kept all those candies from raids till post game. It ruined the play through when I was effortlessly higher level than every gym after sometime. I beat the game with just mr. Rime basically lol.
I didn’t finish bdsp, but it’s cute but too bad they didn’t do platinum content instead.
Legends arecus is one of the best Pokémon games I have ever played. I have never completed a dex before this game. I hope they do more of these. And also a let’s go jhoto games would be nice too
Black/white 2 is hands down the peak though

Hot take - it’s unfair to hold gen 2 to the same standards as later generations. GSC are regarded as one of the greatest RPGs ever (google it).
I know move pools suck in Gen 2, and many of the most powerful Pokémon are only available in Kanto. But bear in mind these games are 25 years old at this point. GSC follows the blueprint of RBY, encouraging players to immerse themselves in the world of Johto, rather than focusing the plot around taming a legendary. This may be why GSC isn’t as popular with younger gamers, who grew up with more “plot focused” Pokémon games.
If you were a boy who grew up in the early 2000s, you know that GSC was EVERYWHERE. Some of my fondest memories from childhood are play dates with friends where we battled and traded Pokémon.
GSC have aged very well; the games have great replay-ability. I’ve just started replaying Pokémon Crystal and am absolutely HOOKED. About 12 years ago, I replayed Pokémon Sapphire. The game was 10 years old at the time. I’m a fan of the Hoenn games and enjoyed the replay very much, but nothing compares to GSC.

Pokémon designs got weaker, the OST got weaker, the games didn’t have the same charm or personality, the hand holding started, the rivals got too nice, all this gimmicky crap like contests got added.
Pokémon gens 1 and 2 are among the greatest games of all time. I wouldn’t put anything past Gen 2 anywhere near the same ballpark, though Gen 5 comes the closest to recapturing that original Pokémon experience (even though it’s still not even close to being as good).

Generation 7 is, right now at least, the most underrated generation. These games took great strides to change Pokemon up from the previous games. Gyms are absent and replaced by trials, all of whom have their own unique gameplay quick. Weather it's finding a certain pokemon, selecting the right ingredients, or a puzzle; all of the trials have gimmick that is more pronounced than the gym puzzles.
It is also worth noting that these trials, as well as totem pokemon have inspired more recent ideas. Trials became a part of the gyms in SWSH and SV, whereas totems inspired Alphas for PLA and Titans in SV. More so than the Wild Area I can feel Pokemon iterating on systems from these games without holding said games back.
The only weak gen 7 game is Let's Go, but one weak game can't hold back a stellar gen. That is why
Generation 5 is the 2nd best. Black and White 1 is such a creative refresh for the series in terms of storytelling as well as Pokemon. Having only original Pokemon in Unova gives BW1 it's own unique flavor. While some of that is lost thanks these mons appearing in future gens; it's still great to have a game where every pokemon is native to that region. That is why I don't care for BW2 that much in comparison, I don't like Lucario in Unova
Generation 4 and 8 are tied for me, since they are mixed bag. Sinnoh is slow, but for Platinum at least the story is competent. Galar is the opposite where the main game is fast paced, but the story is not the strongest. Platinum and SWSH are still fun times though
Generation 6 is just cozy. It's forgettable, but a decent romp
Gen 3 is at the bottom for no other reason aside from some outdated mechanics.

Sun and Moon were the absolutely worst for me. Not against progression- but def. against the non-stop, interruptive cut scenes and hand-holding. It was extreme! And took hours and hours, it didn't stop. Not to mention it was the least challenging of all, the graphics were subpar, and mechanics they included like the pokemon groups and z-moves were just dumb as hell.

I’ve only ever played: Fire red, Emerald, Omega Ruby and Moon. I like them all.

Gen 5, in my opinion, is the definitive way to experience generation 1. A completely new Pokedex with all the changes from gens 1-4.

Respectfully the definitive way is actually FRLG
      Gen 5 is a second

Pokémon community seems to have an agenda against Gen 1, but truth be told, it's always gonna be my favourite because of simplistic artwork of Sugimori which in my opinion only got worse with each generation, maybe with exception of Gen 2.

BDSP is gen 4, not gen 8 imo. It adds absolutely nothing to DPP and has no pokemon past gen 4, unlike ORAS which had many gen 4-6 pokemon

Gen 7 will and forever be 1 of my favorite. games to play, it introduce regional variants which remain staple throughout the rest of the series, interacting with many of the people of Alola and the battles against trainers, totem Pokemon and even the post game bosses in USUM. I have fond memories playing that game and it was my first time that I ever got a shiny starter Litten in this region. Plus there were the mini games such as Mantine surfing,A Pokemon snap version and of course travelling throughout ultra wormhole to catch legendary Pokemon.
Sure there were slow pacing that make it not so great but I manage to pull through and still have fun with it and I still cherished playing USUM to this day.

As a long-term Pokemon fan since the beginning or short after that I really loved Sun/Moon.
Really cool story, amazing starters and legendaries, totems were really cool and the region is just amazing.

Gen 3 is my absolute favorite and that's coming from someone who grew up playing pokemon starting from Gen 1.

Though this is how the community and the Pokemon Company now market everything, I feel it's difficult to judge Gen I and II as generations. At the time they were just games in a series, RBY introducing people to Pokemon and GSC expanding the world as a sequel. It's really Gen 3 onward that cemented a generational aspect to Pokemon because you can't revisit other regions in main releases from that point on like you can in GSC. It's more fair to look at the games for how they were presented at the time rather than how they have aged compared to other games, and the same can be said for other generations as well.
It's why I dislike Gen 6 the most because, though I agree it has modernized Pokemon, the lack of difficulty, lackluster story, and that they began what seems like carbon copies in future games from that point on by reusing Pokemon models in all the 3D games. Made me appreciate how almost every 2D game had its own unique sprites, even within generations and releases. Kanto Pokemon got new sprites in FRLG after the RSE releases, and even GSC had different sprites depending on which game you played. It added flavor to each 2D game that has mostly been lost on the 3D games. The one that has come the closest for me is Legends: Arceus because most of the Pokemon have separate idle and battle animations to give them more life in the game.

If including remakes and definitive third versions, Gen 4 takes the cake. HeartGold and SoulSilver are the best Pokemon games ever and Platinum is a worthy contender. If we are to exclude remakes and third versions, I have to say either Gen 3 or Gen 5.

I will always have a soft spot for gen 4, but gen 3 is my favourite. Maybe things would be 1% different if you mentioned Colosseum and XD: Gale of Darkness in the poll for gen 3
