Baby goose saved from territorial black swan

- This summer, we had our first (and only) greylag gosling of the year. Geese are flock animals, so need the company of other individuals to do well. So, as all his flight feathers are fully developed, and he's big enough to fly, we decided to release him now, so he can be with other geese.
We found the perfect lake, with a healthy population of greylags, Canada geese, ducks, coots, and swans, and knew it would be ideal for him. However, one resident of the lake was not very happy with the new arrival! Swans are very territorial and this one wanted to show the 'new boy' who the boss was! Simon came to the gosling's rescue and explained the situation, face to face, with this rather annoyed swan...

I love how the baby goose was like "HALP I'M BEING MURDERED" when Simon came to release it at the centre.
And then when it was being picked on by the swan, it still recognized/knew that Simon meant safety, and came to him for protection.

Funny comment, but I think it was trying to get on the land because it realized that was the black Swan's territory, and then saw Simon, stayed in the water and tried to get away from them both
It's so funny how he tells animals off like childred and they listen!?
Yeah, many animals are pretty good at sensing aggression in other animals voice/growls/etc. It might not have understood what he was saying, but it could put to and two together when the large dangerous creature 'growled' at him in a warning like manner (/sound) after being aggressive towards the goose.
Folk often forget that many animals can sense (if not panicking) from the tone of one's voice (and sometimes body language) if it is angry/aggressive, calm or in-between. And since his voice was in-between, the swan took him (most likely) as an animal protecting its (adopted) offspring.

Great job! In a sense, it's way better that the baby met the swan right away, while Simon was there. So, it didn't turn into a drama, and the baby will probably keep a safe distance in the future. So he'll be ok.

This is by far one of my most favorite releases. I adore Simon, man. I love how he talks to the wildlife that they're his children, and is always amazed when they disobey him. Like the baby pigeon who got lost in his car. XD

you are wrong. if you behave in the manner that an alpha would and you are convincing, any animal would back down, given youre not up against a pack a wolves and an ACTUAL alpha. the swan backed off bc simon approached him without fear, spoke loud and with a stern voice, and kept eye contact. the swan didnt know what he was saying but knew simon wasnt going to have him bullying his goose. and we arent even talking about breeding lol.
Thanks for showing us the rehoming. I feel so sorry for the little goose when the black swan got after him. He's had a tough little life. I hope he's fiting in well now.
When I get sad, I just watch videos of Simon scold swans and it cheers me right up. :D

I had a friend who purchased a pair of trumpeter swans for their pond they did ok until the female got sick so he had to to row out in a small dinghy but the male swan nearly sunk him and battered him pretty good. They can be very mean and they beat you with their wings whilst trying to pinch you and hiss at you. He was just barely able to get the ill swan to the vet and back. I give those big birds a wide berth! Yes impressive that the black swan decided to heed your warning. He looked as if he were thinking hmmm maybe I better not cross that human!

I wish I could find an organization like yours here in the states. I have handled many birds & have lived with 4 parrots for better part of 30 years. I have rescued a few seagulls, a baby quail, a goldfinch standing on a busy road divider and 4 swallow chicks whose nest fell from the rafters of a neighbors garage. All successfully survived but one of the seagulls who had a flail chest and had to be euthanized.
Your organization looks really quite well organized and dedicated to the wild birds & beasts. I especially love the device you created to carry the swans with!
