I recently found out that geese are unconditionally, with NO exception, afraid of the sound of a Craftsman S205 chainsaw starting up. Every time I turn it on, every goose within audible range, no matter how angry, immediately stops what they’re doing, gets up, and flies away. It’s just a consistent thing.

Born 1952. There had been fear Canadian geese were going extinct. Much earlier (before my birth) a guy named Jack Miner stepped up; but I remember people talking about it. Established feeding grounds, started banding birds, keeping records that formed the basis of the U.S. / Canadian migratory bird treaty. He was very successful.

I worked in an urban irrigation project for a few years and we had a lot of geese and ducks. The old timers carried spray bottles with a diluted mixture of water and ammonia with them, when the geese got aggressive they would spray the attackers on the chest of back with the smelly stuff. They would immediately stop and retreat. After a while the aggressive birds learned to avoid the guys with the bottles.

Fun fact: geese fly in V-formation because their wingtips generate spinning vortices, and by positioning oneself in exactly correct spot behind the leader, the follower goose can ride the updraft of that vortex - which is a lot less physical effort to stay airborne. Headwind resistance is actually slightly more, because the leader pushes the air backwards and the follower has to fly through that, but being in the updraft more than makes up for it. Due to the same effect geese can sometimes enter formations beside moving vehicles with particular aerodynamics.

Growing up in southeastern Virginia, the Canada Geese migrated back and forth. Now they stay year round. I read an article a couple of years ago that some Americans concerned about the Canada Goose might become endangered, so they raised many of them domestically. This, as well as the vast number of detention ponds built in housing areas, have contributed to these Canada Geese not migrating.

On the last few weeks of her life she learned how to get on our porch and constantly honk till we came out and pet her/feed her.

And it just stared at me for like a minute, it wasnt looking at me but my food, i decided not to risk it, to just sit the poptart down and back away.

i watch this as my canada goose is beside me like... what is that honking daddy?. snuggles head and soft neck against my leg and rubs me. shes my angel. 14 months old as of 2 hours and 55 mins ago. she is one of the dogs in the house but more. have 4 mini white shnauzars and she will fly ahead of them and usher them away from the road if she feels they get too close. then loves to take a bath in the 15 inch by 6 foot wide pool for her in the front yard. she is spoiled rotten. she got hickups for the first time today and omg it was 15 seconds of the cutest thing ever. she paniced and drank more water and it blurted up with air and she would try over and over but like i said, was only 15 seconds. she had to have some daddy loving. she lives inside with us and has doggy pads tapped down in her area due to wing flap and she wants to go to bed from time to time with wife and me but we have to prep. huge human pad (cheaper and better) and she snuggles neck to neck but geese spend a max of 15 mins asleep due to taking turns watching over flock.... so i get get woke up a lot if she sleeps against my neck. i know her warning sounds so if anyone ever walked into our house... i would know immedieatly and between her and my 9... i think we are covered minus the 4 dogs and wife with 380 and bro with 9.... people drive by our house super slow to watch her when we are walking her and dogs. it trips them out. her wings arent clipped or anything. if she ever wants to leave, she is welcome to. but she wont stay more than 10 feet of me unless wife is home and then its her torn between who she will follow to the kitchen or stay by their side. just know that a goose biting you doesnt really hurt that bad at all. we let her play with our fingers at times and she can really go ham if we let her but rarely does she break skin unless we are being dumb. the thing with them is... if you play dosile, sit down. get a handful of grass (not roots) and present it... 9 times out of 10, they will come up and eat out of your hand after some time
just talk nice and calm. talk like its your kid and want them to come to you. thats all it takes. dont move to them and dont rush. take your time. and omg, dont be an A hole and grab the neck. never ever do that. thats like kicking a 90 year old woman down the stairs. you are that person. canada geese have super memory. if you are nice to a group... they will be your family forever and bring more if you stay that way. if you are ever mean... word spreads and you will be attacked. thats how they work. they are super smart

Never forget my first playground experience. Canadian geese were sitting in the rut around the merry go round just chilling cause it was cool there i guess. These kids my age at the park convinced me to go practice running around the merry go round to turn it while they all went and played. I charged over thinking they'd fly away like crows do in my backyard, and got mugged by geese. They took my pb & j (yes i guess i was going to run spinning up the merry go round with it), and just mercilessly attacked me until this park ranger came over and helped me 😂. Now sometimes when i go down to the local park and sit by the water, if geese start to walk up to me i chase them away. And i think they know me now, because one time i grabbed one by the neck and threw it in the water because as i was walking back to sit on the drain. It charged after me
