Massive AoW fan. Been playing since #1. But I'm gonna give this 12 months to mature and ferment!! (Also, it's a lot more than $50 in my country!)
I've been playing computer games since Pong, and I have played every Civ; every HoMM; and every AoW, but THIS game just blew me away. 40 hours in, and so far, it's my top all time 4x game.

This is the game I’ve wanted for so long. I wanted a fantasy game like Civilization and this is that and more.
I would just say it's a mix of Civ and Heroes of MM. Chef's kiss combo

I have been playing Stellaris almost non stop but this game has dragged me away. I had a few bugs at first but now I am playing on the beta release it seems perfect.
It is incredible fun and so much customisation. I did not try to min max and just aimed for some Death Frogs and it just happened to work out. Cannot wait to play another game with Cat Barbarians and Mole Dwarf Rock people as well. SO many different play styles and no idea which one I will like the most.
Great review. Was wondering if I should get this game as someone who loved age of wonders 1 when I was really young and played hundreds of hours of warhammer total war. I still think it’s a little bit expensive so might wait till it’s on sale
I'd say looking at this it's more of a marriage between Civ and Heroes, saying it's DoS2 it's far too much of a stretch... looks awesome nevertheless!
It’s like Games Workshop of the 1980s jumped in a Time Machine and made a modern game! It feels like fantasy did when it all got going in the late 70s. For me, this is way more Warhammer than the Total War series, and the tactical battles feel way more satisfying and cinematic than Codemaster’s. The really big battles, against high level leaders, feel so epic and dramatic! It’s not just GOTY…it’s one of the greatest strategy games of all time.
Game Billet has it for around $42 right now. I’ll probably wait a little bit before I grab it. Thanks for the review!

The original from 1999 is my favourite and most played game of all time.
Been addicted to this on my ps5 and I’m sure I will eventually have more play time than the first.

Great review, thanks much. I've been a fan of these games since "Lords of Magic" which was the predecessor of these games. If you ever play it, you can see where the whole concept came from. It's probably dirt cheap on steam. The music for the "Chaos" and "Order" factions in that game was superb. Although the AI.. once you figured it out - you could bury it in like 10 turns, lol.
Look forward to this game beating me. Love games that are a good challenge with a lot of depth and atmosphere.

Age of wonders 4 won me as soon as i saw gameplay in youtube. I thought wow so cool but Its way more fun than i expected when i actually played it!! it has taken the best elements of games i love and mixed them masterfully creating such a fun game to play!! Havent felt this happy with a game purchase for a while!!

I've wanted to try Stellaris but $117 for an incomplete Ultimate Bundle at 54% off is crazy, Paradox DLC practices are an abomination. I'm definitely picking up AoW 4 though, it looks great from the start.

Good job. Nice review. Finally, after decades of watching/reading AoW reviews, I have found a reviewer who actually understands that this game is almost nothing like Civ. Sure, it has turn-based empire building and hex grid maps (which AoW had back in 1999), but that's where the similarities end.
In truth, the game is a spiritual successor to Master of Magic, with a heavy dose of Total War and generic RPG elements. I get so tired of lazy ass "reviewers" who call AoW "fantasy civ"--because it's such a stupid description, and shows that the reviewer has no clue about the history of 4x games.
It's interesting to hear people compare certain elements of AoW to Stellaris or Crusader kings, when AoW has had these elements for a very long time (i.e, quests, heroes, etc.)

Those are very different games. But it's a strategy so 100s of hours guaranteed, well, if you like stategy
Its good, but gets repetitive 3rd map in. Need more quest variety. Its complexity is is superficial appearance only. Core is pretty simple if you don't care much of how your race looks.
One more update. The latest patch has fixed so much in this game. It is now one of my top games in my life. They really worked hard to fix and improve so many things.
Game feels so choppy hopefully they update the game to make the performance better

My first playthrough i made a race of druidic halflings who embrace their animalistic nature and whose goal is to grow the entire world.
I called them Druids of the Hearth
This is such a weird title, a masterpiece yet is it worth it? So confusing lol
This game looks appealing to me, but i dont have much experience with 4X games. And there's SO many titles this year so i cant afford to just risk it on a $50 game. I mostly play games for the story, but i cant really figure out how much story/campaign there is in this game.
Some of the best games i played lately, Octopath Traveler 2, Hogwarts Legacy, God of War, Xenoblade Chronicles, Zelda, Fire Emblem, Persona 5, Elden Ring etc... Based on those, would i like this game? :)
No, this is not a story driven game. It’s more of a create your own adventure type game. There is a story but it isn’t anywhere like the games you listed and the gameplay is far slower. This game is perfect if you like games like stellaris, civilization, total war. I wouldn’t risk it if you don’t like strategy much.

You make your own story and the game really builds it with you. Make your aggressive cat race dominate those pesky orcs or whatever you want. AoW series is well worth it in every way.

Wasn't for me, but might be for some.
Its simple, but has a lot of features.
It directs you to what you need to do. Like you move a unit and the hit next, and you learn a spell then hit next, then advice a city and hit next, etc. it walks you through each turn very nicely so you don’t miss anything

That is a weird question. Dead Cells is a platformer, this is a strategy. How the hell can you compare an addiction factor here?!

I don't agree, The races feel bland.... the campaign even more so. No racial units to name a few. However the music/Audio, Graphic and art style greatly improved, I returned it after 1.5 hours.

First, Gamepass is NOT free, second, it is not an excuse for the crap they released, third, there are a bunch of free games that are 1000times better
