  • In this video, we will setup the RG-350 to allow dual-stick game-play for games like Robotron 2084, Karate Champ and others. We'll go through how to set it up, a brief game-play and we'll even take the RG350 with us to Rocket City Arcade and meet Ben. Ben has never heard of the RG-350 but is a big fan of Robotron! This was my first trip to this location and took my son there for a Fortnite tournament.
    If you live near or are visiting the Huntsville, AL area - Definitely check out Rocket City Arcade www.rocketcity... ! They have lots of fun retro, VR and modern gaming machines. Good thing I brought the RG-350 along.
    Special Thanks to John C. for sharing this tip with me, if it wasn't for him this video likely would not have happened. Thank you John!

    I used to own the actual Robotron Arcade machine when I was a lad. My Uncle had a bingo hall with this in it, and he said he was getting rid of it soon and getting in a new machine, so I bought it from him for a few hundred pounds back then.....I killed this game. It has 100 levels before it clocks back to level one, but that didn't make it any easier. This game is mental. The levels get busier and more frantic every 10 or so, to a point where you need to build up so many spare lives to make a path out of the swarm. eventually broke the joysticks, and didn't have the resources to get it fixed back then, and when I moved house, had no where to store it.....So I left it in the garage.....So, so regret that decision..its worth a small fortune now, and I miss playing the game.....Ive been looking for a decent home duel stick emulator to play on a large screen at home....If anyone can recommend, then that would be appreciated.

      You're asking at the right place! I also own a Defender from 1981, though it's currently down (monitor needs re-capping). I would love to have an original Robotron too, it's one of my top 5 favorite games. Anyways, on to your question... I designed a 3D Printed Arcade console called OpenCADE. Also designed a control panel just for Robotron. It may be connected via USB to a PC or you could install a Raspberry Pi in the unit itself if you want it fully self-contained. Lots of options. One of my viewers was Manny and he sent me some photos and provided input on his build, here are the results: wagnerstechtalk.com/opencade/opencade-up-001/
      This seems to be pretty much exactly what you're wanting. You will need access to a 3D Printer or someone who can print it for you. All the models are free to download on my website/Thingiverse wagnerstechtalk.com/opencade
      Hope this is helpful to you!

      @@WagnersTechTalk Probably a bit accessive to what I'm looking for.......I neither have the time, patience or skill set to build that!!... I've seen those duel 2 player joystick units with 2000 or so games built in....plug and play units.....would one of these have this sort of thing built in to it?....They look pretty solid.....

    Hey Jon! I was playing some pac-man and mr. do on my rg350 and had some deaths caused by accidental diagonals (8 way stick playing 4 way game issues). However, I came up with a control settings scheme that I think is better than using a joystick or d-pad for directional control. When I mapped my directional control to the a, b, x, y buttons and practiced a bit to develop speed and precision, I started doing pretty good in those games. I think both the joystick and the d-pad have too long of a travel distance to be able to just practice and "get good" with them on 4 way games. I will say one bummer is that in mame4all you can't decide with way the screen rotates for vertical orientation games, and this can affect how comfortable it is to use different buttons/pads/sticks for control, and your ability to comfortably be able to use your left or right thumb for movement. But I was able to use my left thumb (in this case above the screen) controlling directions with the abxy buttons, and left hand for movement is what I'm used to. I'd prefer to have the direction control using my left hand but *below* the screen the screen, though.
    Another idea would be to 3d print a shorter joystick and see if that makes joystick control any faster/easier/better. Haven't tried this yet, but I did get a 3d printer so may give it a go soon. I found a link to print rg350 thumbsticks here: www.thingiverse.com/thing:3963163
    Perhaps it would be possible to 3d print a 4 way restriction plate for the Rg350 joysticks, the same way you did for the Opencade project? That would probably be the very best solution if it's feasible!

    • @WagnersTechTalk
      @WagnersTechTalk  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John, great ideas about mapping the buttons for pac-man, ms pac-man, etc. makes total sense. That's awesome that you got a 3D printer, how are you liking it so far and which one did you get? I've been using my Flash Forge Creator Pro going on 4 years now and it's been great. The thingiverse models you mentioned I added to the tips page here: wagnerstechtalk.com/rg350tips/#Helpful_Accessories but honestly, I have not tried any of them yet so I don't know how well they work. It may be possible to design a small restrictor plat that slides in from the left-side. That's a great idea actually. The tricky part would the to not disrupt the L1/L2 buttons because it would need to essentially snap over the left-side and have a cut-out to allow the base of the joystick to slide through. It's probably doable though.

      Awe, thank you my friend! Really appreciate your kind comments. So happy to hear I had a small part in helping out. I don't profess to be an expert on this stuff. This video was inspired by another viewer, John C. who basically gave me the information he used to get it working. The RG-350 tips page is growing due to community support and the participation of others sending me tips/tricks, etc. I checked out your FB page ( facebook.com/scenescapeshop/ ) , dude you are REALLY talented! I'll try to think of an arcade concept but here's a quick one that comes to mind... a close-up of someone inserting a quarter into a game, dither a bit and see a row of Centipede, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, etc. and maybe show the characters coming out of the machines (monitors) or somehow interacting with each other. Dunno, just a quick brainstorm.

    Robotron and Smash Tv using the second analog stick on xmame ;) Another reason to prefer the RG350 over the pocketgo2/playgo. You just have to copy your ROMs to the internal SD card in this directory: /media/data/local/share/xmame/xmame**/roms (where "**" is 52, 69, or 84 depending on the roms version you have). MAME .37b15 is MAME 52 (37 plus 15 = 52). Then you use the R1 shoulder button in Xmame to select the version of MAME. Press Start to force a refresh of the roms list.
    It is not unusual for the ROMs to change for a game between releases of MAME. Oftentimes, better or more complete ROM dumps are made, or errors are found in the way the ROMs were previously defined. Early versions of MAME were not as meticulous about this issue (which is why some sets still may work as is on some later mame releases), but more recent MAME builds may have different rom sets and why they may show roms missing. This version of XMame seems mainly to use .37b5 romset (available on archive dot org) but some games require later versions and zipped roms greater than 3mb may not work due to size. To see the instruction manual press select on the xmame icon, then choose Show manual and press A. Clrmamepro is what I used in the past to use to make romsets compatible, it uses dat files and can modify a later romset for example to the proper files/names it requires on an specific earlier romset. mamedev.emulab.it/clrmamepro/.

    My Mame4all in RG350 does not allow me to enter the games, I am left on the OK screen, and when I press the button on the left, the emulator exits. Can the buttons be reconfigured so that this does not happen? The problem is that the configuration screen can only be accessed on the screen next to the OK screen and I do not have access.

      Try moving the left stick right-left a couple of times, should continue. The only way to get rid of the warning (AFAIK) is to find an updated .OPK which removes it. There is one floating around for mame4all, but not XMAME that I'm aware of.
