  • This is was one of the most fun projects I've yet to tackle. This video will take you through all the steps I took to build this machine that has taken the place of my old router sled. And so far it has been very fun to use and it is incredibly fast at flattening large slabs of wood. This machine was designed with the intent to make it fully cnc operated, but this video focuses only on the mechanics and the machining of the parts itself. This is an ongoing project and there will be more videos in the future that will focus on the cnc aspect. I hope you find this video enjoyable and if this is your first time on this channel, let me say welcome and thanks for tuning in.

Taking nothing away from the Huge Skillz you have - my brain glazed over after a bit when stuff began to involve precision milling, electronicals & whatnot. If it commands precision beyond "looks ok from 6 feet" chances are it's going to turn pear-shaped if I attempt it and I have few illusions about the extent of my talents - so I'll quietly wander off & watch you hit stuff with axes/chainsaws/hammers instead & file this one under ^ "Magikery Others Do" or suchlike. If I drill a hole & it's c.a the right size in roughly the right position/not quite the right position but you can hammer the bolt in using a medium hammer, I consider that an excellent day out on the "precision" front.
Still - looks pretty amazing, the flattener - Kudos.

Came across your channel a couple of weeks ago while researching slab miliing. I recently purchased land here in Arkansas, USA and have some decent size logs I want to slab myself. You do a great job of story telling and video production. Love your sound tracks as well, you have a great style. Enjoying the videos immensely and learning a ton. Please keep the videos coming. Best Regards

Leo, thanks for your comment, and congrats on you pruchase, owning a piece of land is such a nice and liberating feeling. That sounds really cool, I hope you get to have a lot of fun cutting the logs into slabs. I have a few milling videos in the works featuring some of the largest logs to date. Maple and elm, should be pretty interesting. Comments such as yours really keeps the motivation going, again, thanks a bunch.

I have been a machinist for 5 years and i can hardly complain about your milling skills. Also, i really like your videos, its very obvious you put alot of effort into filming and editing. Very entertaining to watch. Greetings from the Netherlands.

Thank you Thomas! That’s really cool of you to say. And it means a lot coming from a machinist 👍

Nice, looking forward to the full CNC version. May as well automate that slab flattening now you are mostly there. Good robust-looking gantry BTW. Great that you could get it machined flat and all the holes done for you - if you've seen my CNC build vid you know that's a good move! You show so much work and skills here, the machining and design side, but also your videography, editing, and storytelling - big respect boss!

I am mesmerised by your super chilled out but incredibly precise manner, and I hope your hand is ok!. I have rescued an old oak tree blown over on our road from getting chopped up for fire wood, had the trunk slabbed up an they have been drying out in my garage for the last 2 years, with the idea of building a solid live edge table. (even sweeter knowing its from a very old tree from our road) So here I am doing the research for building a router bed/sled to flatten them out, but I feel now like the day I looked up to the top of Everest, wondering how am I going to get there!! Thanks for your videos, they are inspiring! Unfortunately for me, I do not own the skillset you have, but I will give it a go, one step at a time. Any advice would be much appreciated

Beautifully done out there, would you mind posting a list of the parts you bought to make this sled or if you have a plan. I am new into wood working and also doing from cutting with Panther Chainsaw mills, drying and doing live edge table.
I recently made my own sled using linear guide rails and Makita router. Had pretty much the same issue the router hit a wood cookie on the side and the bearings must be changed I guess, its still working but very noisy. Well long story short.
Need to make a professional one using a powerful motor.
