Make a GIANT Router Sled | Overengineered Slab Flattening Jig

- Here I build my third router sled and finally get all that I was hoping for. This slab flattening jig uses roller skate 608 bearings on EMT conduit to give a smooth ride and keep the router from jumping around. I have a bunch of giant slabs, table tops, and boards to flatten and I wanted something a lot better than the typical plywood box router sled I have been using.

I've had my router for about 10 years now and it is starting to die. What routers do you all recommend I check out?
From my research the Bosch 2.3hp unit with the wooden handles is a great buy. That's what I just picked up but haven't used it yet, making the router sled. That being said the Triton make a good big boy, but from reading on forums they may have fallen off a bit in terms of quality. The large Dewalt unit seems to be what is suggested now. If you are using your old one still you could get a big boy for slab flattening. You could leave the old one in a router table setup or you could keep it handy with an 1/8th round over bit or whatever bit you use most. I'm not sure of the condition of your router but it's nice to have an extra router with a different bit to save time from what I hear. Not necessary but convenient.
@@MrT-dn5hm this is great thanks. My current router is ok but it would be great to not have to switch all the time and have something with a bit more power. I noticed the triton used to get tons of love but I am not seeing so much the past two years. I’ll certainly look at the dewalt, I didn’t even consider them so good to know on that.
That sled looks awesome.
Thanks, i just used it to flatten an entire table top yesterday and it took like 5 min for setup and 10 to do the flattening on both sides. I should have made this years ago.
If you build another table let me know and you can bring it over and ill flatten it for you :)
@@BuildItMakeIt No plans to build another one but I have thought about reflattening the one I have. I did it with a belt sander initially and it's not very flat.
One suggestion would be to make the base that the router attaches to out of 3/4 acrylic.
Oh, that is a nice idea. I like you could see better what is going on incase you are veering off to one side or cutting too much.
Adorei o seu trabalho!
Parabéns!
Obrigado, fico feliz que tenha gostado.
I've had trouble finding a circle cutter that will cut the smaller circles. I found a 2-blade cutter at Harbor Freight that will go down to 1-1/4. I think if I take one of the cutters off I can get down to the 1-13/64.
Thanks for the tip on the Harbor Freight one! I updated the link to point to the different cutters on amazon. The General Tools model 4 (amzn.to/3iMMlPd) should cut all the way down to 7/8 of an inch.
Very nice.. I have one issue, I think HDPE panels would work better, last longer & smother to use.. Thank you for sharing.. I very much enjoyed watching..
Thanks for the tip! I used some HDPE in my last project and I really liked it. Cuts great, and should be super stable.
Great hybrid build! How do you adjust the height for different slabs?
Thanks, I should have showed that better. The rails on the side I have three holes 1 inch apart so I can raise it up if I have thicker, or really warped stock.
Anyone that has built this, What would you estimate your cost to be? Not counting a router
It cost me just north of 100 dollars when I made mine. There has been a bit of inflation since which has pushed up the price, but I have found the larger conduit to be ~25 dollars at actual electric stores vs when I bought mine at the local home improvement store for 40 so that can save. My guess is about 125 these days.
How do I get the plans?
I have them on my website at www.builditmakeit.com/store or you can get them at my Etsy shop www.etsy.com/shop/BuildItMakeIt
Ok. This design might move to the top of the list, although those fly cutters make me nervous 😬
Yeah, I can see that. They can get pretty big. Luckily it is hidden under the plate so your hands stay nice and far away. ✋
LOL, no I mean the fly cutter for cutting out the circles! Almost done the build. I made the mistake of getting the heavier duty 3/4 conduit so the dimensions of those runners are different but since they are beefier I only needed 3 supports. I might re-build it again and make it prettier once I get it all together.
@@ramaroodle oh yeah I totally agree the circle cutter is scary! I’m glad it’s coming along. That’s good to know the thicker conduit you don’t have to support as much.
Cannot help noticing that you don't have a riving knife on your table saw and you often put your fingers too close when cutting small parts. Please take care of yourself.
Great job . Great idea
