I love that you are saving the A.P.C. dress for your daughters! A couple of years ago my mother gave me a few of her old dresses when she was cleaning out her closet. They were simple day dresses she had fitted to her. They fit me like a glove! ❤️ They are high quality and some of my absolute favorite pieces! I wear and treasure them. They always remind me of her and the really happy feeling in our home when she wore them. When you mentioned saving them for your daughters it tickled my heart, what a special gift. ❤️

Your comment about “I don’t have to prove how minimalist I am” really struck me. I feel like a lot of the time, people (myself included!) can get caught up in a sort of “get rid of everything” sort of mentality with minimalism, like it’s a challenge to have as few things as possible. This can lead to a lot of guilt over owning things, even things that you do need! That’s why I really like the ten item wardrobe- it’s about finding what works for you and loving everything you own. It’s not about some competition with others, or with yourself, to see how little you can own; it’s about improving your life and bringing more joy into your life through the things you do own.

These ten item wardrobe videos are my favorite! I was recently assessing my spring and summer wardrobe (a process that I appreciate and find enlightening) and learned that during the summer I gravitate towards very flowy and cool items because it gets so hot here. My favorite items to wear are cotton midi skirts with a tee shirt or a knee length cotton dress. I think I would also be better to have an almost separate wardrobe for each season as well because the weather is very different. Going into fall I can see the temperatures where I live staying very warm until at least October and maybe November. Maybe I’ll focus on colors at that time so I don’t feel like I’m still wearing my summer clothes in the fall (even though the weather feels summery). This is something I struggle with every fall. I love writing down notes about what I most wore and why after a season and learning from my choices.

I am seriously right there with you in the same boat, I was actually planning to make a very similar video because the items I thought I’d wear this summer I hardly used or not at all, and my core favorites were on heavy rotation and even got damaged from use! I am so excited for the Fall season + the beautiful colors + prints that come with 🍁💛

Jennifer, all I can say about my previous wardrobe improvements is that I have shed all T-shirts that I possibly could. I kept a few to do house work in, but with your encouragement, as soon as possible, I'm going to begin wearing my best with an apron for cleaning house. This is something I've always wanted to do, but was always hesitant. Thanks for the encouragement.
I think I've mentioned that my depression-era mother often spoke of her three dresses and two pair of shoes growing up. That merged into my life to having only one or two at most Sunday best dresses. I taught the 4,5 year old Bible class on Sunday morning for a while and one pretty little girl who came from a family of beautiful girls and women asked me why I wore the same dress every week! HA! For a little four or five year old to notice that!! I think I turned to stone for a few seconds because I was kind of surprised to hear her fashion critique at such a young age. I didn't feel in the least bit offended. I well remember my mother's favorite dress when I was six and loved it when she wore it. Little ones notice much more than we ever think. :-)

Embrace the fall colors! I transition to rust, mustard, chocolate brown, hunter green, etc. around Labor Day, and keep it up until Thanksgiving, regardless of the weather. In Texas, fall may never happen, so I create my own seasons! I also do it around the home. The Leaves candle is burning daily come September.

We have a friend, who, when he has gotten all the wear and enjoyment out of something he owns, and decides to retire it, has a saying: "These shoes don't owe me anything anymore!"
And so it is with your Rebecca Taylor and APC dresses. They don't owe you anything anymore!
It will be fun to update & switch things up a bit.

For myself I discovered many of my summer clothes were looking shabby and bought a few pieces recently. I have 2 tops that after watching this video I know I need to return one isn't me and the other I bought in two colors and have only worn one.

For me, it's not that I just had a baby, but the Fall season here in Texas is very hot until November, however, I want to enjoy the season wearing fall/winter colors. It is very helpful to hear how you asses your pieces from the (almost) previous season and I am excited to see your process as you choose the new pieces for this next season! 💛🤗💛

I always love your capsule wardrobe videos, and the inspiration you have provided in my own journey. Thank you! I love that purple short sleeve print dress! And I enjoy reviewing trends solely for the purpose of identifying timeless items/colors/cuts that are having their moment, and knowing I might pick up a piece for the long term. I heard another capsule wardrobe person point to this notion, and I like to keep an eye out for this reason. I am buying far fewer items, as I enjoying what I have much more. Shopping the closet! Getting creative putting together new combos. Thanks again for your lovely channel!

Perfect timing - inspiration for my Aussie spring and summer wardrobes. For the past couple of years I have been doing three wardrobes - summer, winter and spring/autumn which works best for Sydney weather. My absolute favourite colour combination for summer is actually navy and white with tan accessories, my summer wardrobe is endless blue which brings me so much joy. This spring and summer my wardrobe is going to be endless colourful versions of a dress I love that comes is dozens of different prints in a comfortable and flattering cut with pockets and a breathable yet crush resistant cotton. As my season of life is currently so busy between work, study and running another business I am just owning this as my ‘uniform’ as this dress suits me to a tea and it’s so versatile.

    • @MsDianaJean

So, I "watched"😉 this video while I was unloading the dishwasher etc, so, mostly listening. You know what I noticed? You gave so much attention to the importance of assessing the climate we live in; our current lifestyle; and blocking out others' opinions. I just LOVE this, Jennifer, and I couldn't agree more. I am slowly learning this skill, coupled with accepting imperfection while I patiently figure it out. I am a big fan of layering! It's helped me immensely with living in a temperamental climate. One suggestion I will make when layering. Watch carefully with blouses and t-shirts with any bulk like ruffles or fullness in the sleeves. They can end up looking "bunchy" under a cardigan or sweater. Same with layering over a dress, I guess. But, YES, you'll know what you love when you see the outfits you return to over and over. Next summer its a-line dresses and skirts for me. I agree with lighter colors, too, as we Canadians so embrace our summer weather when it arrives!

You rock the bolder looks like dark colors, the "peacock" red floral blouse, the brush strokes dress, the bold floral print on your maxi dress. The lighter tints, tones and shades don't reflect your bold nature. You say you want brighter colors for summer, so try pure hues (still bold to reflect your nature) like green, white, yellow, dark pink.

I've been on the same journey, I went super minimalist, but I find with dresses and in particular printed dresses that I prefer to have more to rotate through because they are more "memorable" than a ten item capsule with all neutral colours, or separates. I've also reintroduced sets of handbag/belt/shoe colours so that I have ones to suit pale spring colours or darker outfits. I'm gradually building them up to have tan, black and blush sets. Each year I get a bit closer to my true style.

I always admired that you wore navy colors in summer. I went out and bought a few navy colored items because I thought that was so unique, and different. Wonderful, as always, J! I’m up north in the (San Francisco for non-Californians) Bay Area, and I really find it necessary to have a different selection of clothes for each of the four seasons. A lot of my wardrobe can work for multiple seasons with layering, too, especially my beloved sleeveless knit dresses (jumper dresses, or “skirts” with sweaters over them in cold weather). I think a knit midi dress (cotton or viscose) are the single most versatile item in the wardrobe. The one feature that they often have that doesn’t work for me is 3/4 length sleeves, they are too hot summer, but my lower arms get cold in winter. My, not-optimal, solution is to wear thin arm-wearers with them when it’s cold.

I’m all for the thoughtful ways you assemble your wardrobe, Jennifer. You might enjoy J.Jill clothes... quality fabrics and great styles with reasonable prices if you choose from sale items that have an additional discount below the sale price. You would probably wear an XS, but the live chat rep can tell you exact item measurements to be sure. Shipping is free via Shoprunner, which is free for the first year.

After seeing your speech a couple years ago I fell in love with the idea of a capsule wardrobe and after the experience for two years I have decided that having two wardrobes (winter and summer) is the best fit for my "love of fashion" personality. I use layering for fall and spring but for the most part there are items that are defined by summer or winter. There is something exciting about unpacking for the upcoming season that is much like a shopping spree.

Great ideas!! Honestly, this spring and summer colors are actually the favorite part of my wardrobe this time of year. There is something about pastels and bright colors that make you feel so cheery when you open your closet! Have you considered having the coral top shortened in the sleeves? It would look adorable and very summery with a flutter sleeve.

Hi again, you and I have very similar wardrobes, so I thought you might like this cold-weather tip: I wear a silk/viscose (60/40) knit slip under my dresses. Not only does it provide a little extra warmth, it smooths the shape a bit and prevents the dress clinging to tights. Amazon has these at very reasonable prices, so I have three that I rotate.

I wouldn't say I have a 10 item wardrobe yet but I'm getting closer. I can say I've learned to add far fewer pieces each season. I've also let things wear out and not replaced them - just to see if I really need to rather than the more knee jerk reactionary purchase. I've noticed I'm much happier with my closet, getting dressed is definitely easier and I'm much more appreciative of any new additions. Thanks Jennifer - keep up the great work!

I always enjoy your wardrobe videos, especially the thoughtful recaps and reviews. I now live in SW Idaho, where we have brutally hot summers and brutally cold winters, so I definitely have a 4 season wardrobe rotation. It's actually pretty fun, scooting things in and out of rotation, though not so minimalist as my former southern climate allowed! We are just starting to get into the cold nights, and still hot days of early autumn weather here, and I find myself excited for the layering that will be necessary in the coming weeks.

Jennifer I loved your insights. When I first started watching you I lived in Missouri where there are 4 distinct seasons & the temp can range from below 0 to above 100 during the year. But last year I moved to Florida where there are 2ish seasons 🙃 I definitely changed my wardrobe styles! It’s different to see people wear the same clothing all year long, but weather-wise it makes sense! I decided I want to look for some fall-colored or fall-floral t-shirts like those you got a few years ago from Zulily. I know you’re sick of them, but I LOVE those LL Bean dresses on you. They were so elegant yet functional for daily life. I bet if you kept one for each season you’d get some space & more variety & fall back in love with them. I think of them as the Jennifer dress. 🤣

I really appreciate your videos. I have learned so much from them, thank you! I made the same discovery this year regarding the spring/summer items. I live in Northern California (snow country) with four distinct seasons and realized I had to set things aside as the days grew too warm and I became limited in what I was left with. At least in fall/winter I can add layers to my fall clothing. The main goal for me is to actually wear the things I own and you have helped me accomplish this. I have more than 10 items each season but I wear them all :)

The colors of the florals you’re wearing in your intro is so lovely with your skin color. I hope that doesn’t come across other than as I Intended it, a compliment on the item you chose and of your taste, . Sometimes it’s hard to express meaning in a comment.

Gant and Ralph Laurent have great cotton jeans skirts which are knee-length!
Usually a lot of good jeans skirts will go into sale now when the autumn hits. Scoring high quality items in the summer sales, which you intend to use next year, is actually a great way to stay within your budget. As long as you know what you like and what criterias to look for it will work out beautifully.
I think it's wonderful that you are looking over your wardrobe in order to find what works the best for you and your life. Actually that is precisely what you have been teaching all along (having a seasonal 10-item wardrobe) so don't feel bad about it. You're doing great!
PS: Saying ankle boots sounds much more sophisticated than booties.

I loved this chat! Things I will be looking for at end of season sales- 2 skirts. One navy, one a lighter color in a cool material. Also- need a pair of nude sandals with a heel. Looking towards fall/winter, I need a good wool coat. I have a down jacket, but it’s way past time to replace my old coat. I’ve been seeing a lot of long denim skirts in the stores, like Gap and Ralph Lauren. Knee length or just past the knees. I saw a cute one on ThredUP from Banana Republic too. Love your recap. I think getting more “capsule ish” one of the joys is being a little bit more seasonal, which I never used to do.

    • @cocoanino
      @cocoanino 5 ปีที่แล้ว

By the way I’ve been doing fall shopping on ThredUP and it’s been GREAT. I search for items that are “like new,” if not “new with tags.” I use filters to search for items made of things like cotton, silk, and cashmere. Prices aren’t always dirt cheap but still a fraction of shopping new. I’m also in hot Florida so my fall clothes reflect that, and I’ve got nautical tops, a burgundy tee, camel color and black cashmere and wool sweaters with 3/4 sleeves, and more. All secondhand but like new. And they take returns. I usually return about 50% of items if it’s a big order. With so many brands everything fits a little differently. Maybe I’ll even make a video. 🙂

I am currently living in those LL Bean dresses! I love it but understand how you can get "done" with it ;) I think the green one or the floral one might be an easy comfy (presentable) option for next spring and you might like it more isolation of the others. I have often wondered if you were hot in your SS wardrobe as I know I am in North Carolina! It gets hot here, but I was sure it was hotter where you live! I actually like dark colors in summer, sometimes, like an indigo with a busy pattern paired with white or a simple, short black linen dress-- very Mediterranean! But I crave lighter colors as well. I love that you were true to your 10-item wardrobe and having just a little more variety is still very much in a minimal/intentional mindset. You do not have to explain yourself to anyone! Love your wardrobe and I'm looking forward to seeing FW! Oh BTW for denim skirts I've been doing flowing, knee-length knee-length a-line chambray skirts... I was afraid they might look too "little-girl" but they work out nicely with a pretty blouse and are very light and comfortable!

I love your 10 item videos! I am my own kind of minimalist in my home and also my clothing.
For winter: black Zella live in high waist leggings from Nordstrom (thick, stretchy, comfy, high quality)
    For Summer: white leggings.
Summer Tops: pretty pastel tops that come over hips
Winter Tops: pink, white, cream, tops. Same color of sweaters. All cover the hip area.
Shoes: ballet flats, sandals, or high heels.
Some dresses for actual occasions in MY life!!
Coats are either cream, pink, white, or grey. Dark clothing seems depressing to me, especially in the winter.
I LOVE your books and videos. So classy!! Lovely! 😊❤️👠👛💄💕👛👍

Consider cropping the sleeves in your maxi dress and in that red floral blouse too. I did the same with my "not so flowy and breathable" pieces and it worked very well.

Love these look back videos! Orvis has some very cute Autumn and Winter patterned skirts on sale. I've also recently rediscovered Stein Mart. Not sure if there is one in your area, but they have such cute dresses, cardigans, etc. and wonderful sales. Thank you for your inspiration. I've been dressing up each day in nice dresses, skirts, etc. for a month now, and I couldn't imagine ever going back to my previous unpresentable lounge-wear while working from home.

I was so excited to see this video up today! Thanks for your honestly. It’s refreshing that, no matter the critics, you stay true to yourself and so what’s best for you.
I had planned out my summer wardrobe with cute dresses, but ended up having foot issues that required me to wear athletic shoes daily. Those don’t pair well with dresses so I pulled out my old denim shorts and t shirts. I didn’t look nearly as presentable this summer as I would have liked. Oh well! Next year I’ll wear them. Have you ever considered a denim jacket for layering?

You are taking a very logical approach to your wardrobe. We are always evolving! Thank you Jennifer I'm looking forward to your new choices! We have very distinct season hear in Missouri and I have to dress accordingly, I couldn't wear long sleeves in summer ether. And the same in Fall/ Winter when temperatures go from 50's in Fall to the 20's in Winter and in deep Winter below zero. I have to be ready for anything!

Here in Tennessee we have four distinct seasons and need to change out 4 times a year. Although it is still hot until October I like to remove the white pants and most summertime things. I have several tops that I use as transitional pieces in spring and fall.

This is one of my favorite parts of 10 item wardrobe. I do each of the 4 seasons. A lot of my spring from the previous year didn't fit due to postpartum. I made due and only had 1 new t-shirt. For summer a few things from the previous also didn't fit, yet again I didn't purchase anything new. I am retiring a few items due to wear and tear. I also found navy blue to be too dark for the warmer months. Moving forward, I will need a couple new bottoms for fall. Looking forward to seeing what you decide for fall. Best wishes

That's the first thing I always think of when I think of wearing a jumpsuit! "Man...but then I'll have to pull it all the way down every time I have to go to the bathroom!" I guess if I just LOVED the look of a jumpsuit, I would probably not care so much, but I've never been enthused to wear one! And I do think they look super cute on some people. Just a personal preference, I guess.

Loved this video! I really relate with so much of what you said. I’ve been on a journey and this summer realized that while I love having a more minimal wardrobe I don’t like wearing the same things all year and although I stick to a a few colors, occasionally I want to mix it up and that’s ok too. I don’t have to stick to a set number either, I can add or subtract as I see fit and according to what works for me. I really gave myself a hard time about adding “too many” pieces or adding a color when all my other clothes were neutrals. It’s a journey and it’s going to change as I change. Love all your tips and can’t wait to see what you get for fall!

This was helpful Jennifer. I too, got in a navy and black mode this spring summer and had the same feelings as you... I just felt too somber. I too am going to brighten it up next year with my tops. I will use my navy and black tops for fall though and they pair nicely with my sweaters. I do like a navy top with white pants for summer, that works. I enjoy you sharing your thought process as it helps me assess my wardrobe and articulate my feelings. Thanks as always.

Could you keep the red blouse for fall? The colors would be nice for fall under a blazer or jacket. Also, the maxi dress would be great under a denim jacket for fall. You like them and have them, why not change them to a cooler season? Just a thought.

I'm excited to see what you get for fall, especially because I have a month old son and am also breastfeeding right now...one thing I've found that works well for me is wearing my belly bands under a non-breastfeeding friendly top so that I can lift up the top to feed and still be covered. Gives a lot of options when it comes to choosing tops, and pulling the shirt up makes me more comfortable in public since he doesn't like nursing covers and that way the top of the breast is covered. Thanks for your videos!

I know you have already worn those darker colored dresses so much this summer but maybe set them aside for your fall capsule 2020. The colors would be lovely for fall and since you have milder temperatures they may work perfectly as is with ballet flats or you could layer longer sleeves over them for cooler days. Just a suggestion.

One thing I'm realizing is that I need to get some really bright, solid-colored cardigans to wear in the summertime. I only have a gray, black, and navy cardigan and I wear them often because I get cold in the AC, but what I would really love are some bright colored cardigans! So I will have to be on the lookout for some.:)

Love hearing your feedback about this season's wardrobe and things you will consider moving forward. Living in the south, I totally understand the need to wear items that will work in 100+ degree weather! It depends on whether it is cost-effective, but have you maybe considered getting alterations made on your long-sleeved items? Maybe change them to short or 3/4 length sleeves so you can wear them layered or with a cardigan in spring and by itself in summer?

Thank you for your comments. Great insight! Your video came at the perfect time for me! Just yesterday I was preparing a list for my fall wardrobe. I'm noticing my eye goes toward dark colors. Perhaps looking at prints with a white or light background would help me "lighten up" my wardrobe. I'm taking a second look at the option of layering - something I have not taken advantage of yet. Also, I love cotton, yet so much polyester knit is available and attractive! Your comments help me think through my choices and tendencies. Again thank you for your 10 item wardrobe postings.

I discovered the same thing you did, Jennifer: I had two long sleeved tops that I seldom wore this summer. I will be using separate spring and summer wardrobes next year. Another thing that did not work for me was leaving two much-loved tops in my summer wardrobe that had become too large. I hated to remove them, because I like them so much, but I found that when I wore them I would feel “sloppy.”

I had to get honest and reassess my capsule wardrobe this summer. I had a baby around the same time as you, and so we have three kids now. With three kids, my lifestyle is much more active and my normal uniform of dress + flats just wasn’t working. I need more separates that look put together but also allow me to get on the floor and be active. It’s important to dress for your lifestyle.

I’ve also been thinking about wanting season-specific colors! Recently, I’ve realized that I need to switch out my wardrobe seasonally; here in Washington State, spring and summer (and, similarly, fall and winter) have different enough weather that I can’t quite use the same wardrobe for both. Although I expect to have a lot of crossover in my fall and winter wardrobes this year, I’ve given myself permission to think of them as two distinct wardrobes. Maybe that added flexibility will finally enable me to create a ten-piece wardrobe! (I’ve embraced more and more minimalism in my wardrobe, but never actually managed to whittle it down to less than 15 core pieces. I’m excited to try to reach that goal this year!)

  • @kamloopscruiser874
    @kamloopscruiser874 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Love the look back analysis of each piece. You’re right, understanding why something isn’t working- why it’s left on it’s hanger a lot.
The red blouse maybe belongs in the fall winter season for a bright happy touch.
DH is one who detests if I use the same thing or too similar things. I prefer my small neutral core but I have had to deliberately add a range of accent colours. The “audience” has a say too. 😂

As always a very good and informative post. My turnover cannot start before Tuesday next week, as I am on holiday right now , but I have some ideas. This fall will have a stronger lean to jewelry and other accessories, which I already have. Shoes will have to be bought, as I only have summer-shoes right now. Maybe one other shirt. But I am have to check the ones I have.

Your reflections on your end of the season wardrobe are great. Really gives me some ways to tackle my closet clean out for fall which I’ve been hesitating on. On your blouse and maxi dress, why not take it in and have them made into short sleeves? Most dry cleaning places do basic hemming like that inexpensively.
