This is the type of reaction content that actually matters. It’s always fun to get some insider info, really adds depth to this already incredible video
Salt is legendary. This was cool to get the co-sign from you on how accurate his reporting is. Salt videos are essential record imo for speedrunning and I am always stoked when he tackles a new game.
His writing his out of this world. His pacing is flawless, he keeps you on the edge of your seat all throughout, while making you learn a ton of interesting stuff as well. We are so lucky to have him in the community
@@DesTr069 The last couple of years has seen a rise in popularity of what I refer to as "Speedrunning Debate and Documentary Presenters", or SDDPs for short. These are TH-camrs who talk about the history of speedrunning, usually about the WR Progression of a specific category of a specific game, but also about specific topics that affect speedrunning as a whole, like the allowance of glitches, emulators, and pausing mid-run. Or the history of cheating, how it's done, and how it's detected. They also discuss the arguments for both sides when it comes to controversial topics, such as the aforementioned allowances. Examples of such TH-camrs that come to mind are Karl Jobst, RWhiteGoose, EZ Escape, AverageTreyVG, and Summoning Salt. These channels are all unique in their own ways, but they share the aforementioned attributes in common. However, one thing that becomes noticeable after you watch many of their videos is that some of them apply what I call "dramatization." In other words, whatever they talk about, they make it sound like the most epic story ever told, something reminiscent of a work of fiction (or heavily romanticized real events, in the case of Historical Revisionism). Whether this is a positive or a negative is up to a viewer's opinion. Personally, I like there to be variety. I wouldn't want every single TH-camr to sound exactly the same. Now, not every SDDP does this, nor do they do it all the time. EZ Escape and AverageTreyVG don't make use of dramatization as far as I'm aware. Karl Jobst and RWhiteGoose make moderate use of this narrative technique, but not all the time. Summoning Salt, however, seems to have taken this technique to its logical extreme. His videos make sensationalist journalists look tame by comparison. Every detail, from the editing to the word choices, to how the background music briefly goes mute when he says "...but then..." make any topic seem as exciting and tension-filled as a handwritten novel or screenplay. I seriously wonder what else could benefit from Salt's narration, if he ever decides to talk about other topics with the same genuine excitement as he talks about speedrunning. It would be interesting to see how it would turn out.
This was cool, I enjoyed seeing your insight with some of the knowledge that has come about since the creation of SummoningSalt's WRP of SMB3 Warpless. It would be cool to see more speedrunners of today review Salt's other videos! Cheers Mitch and Salt
I love how Summoning salt includes the "You cant beat this" part. He did it as well in his SMB: The Human Limit when Kosmic uploaded a video entitled "The closest 8-4 will ever be to perfect" and here both Mitch and Kosmic reacted to Summoning Salt's videos of it
I watched this live on Twitch. I then watched Summoning Salts video w/o Mitch's commentary and it was all so interesting that I just watched it again now that it was posted to TH-cam. I got lucky and found Mitch on Twitch's front page 3-4 years ago and it opened a whole new world to me. Half my follows are now some form of Mario speed runner because of him. The entire community has essentially replaced my cable watching habits. Including Summoning Salt who I never heard of before last week. I have been able to catch so many world records live like the first TAS WR a few years ago, the current WR and the more recent unofficial no EH "WR". He does such a great job of explaining the mechanics so all viewers know exactly whats going. HB's facing a certain way, sub pixel manipulation for clips, TAS, routing (like new 5-1 strat), music boxes, EH, hands, etc. So much going on that if he didn't explain it all it would be too confusing to know what's going on. But he explains it all which makes it more entertaining cause now you know why he last or gained those couple seconds or had to reset. Even the variety like Paper Mario is great content. Keep up the awesome work!
It's funny, some games see insane time saves over the years, where 100% runs that start at like 4 hours end up coming down to 1.5 hours over a decade later (without the discovery of game breaking strats). SMB3 wasn't quite like that though, only dropping by about 10 minutes over a decade. Still incredible, and a ton of work to pull off. Summoning Salt does make great videos.
This is a really cool idea, Mitch. It is really interesting to hear the behind-the-scenes commentary on what was going on in your mind back then, and in the scene in general.
Mitch: "Salt's got my back!" Salt: "but it [Cujo's record] would stand a lot longer than Mitch's record." I mean, what's another jab between friends. :P
I think we can all agree that now we need summoningsalt reacting to your reaction of his video... lol. I remember watching that video right when it came out, SummoningSalt work is fantastic and his smb3 warpless video is one of the best he has ever made IMO. Thanks for the insight mitch, is always nice to hear someone who knows a lot about the strats of a game like you do with SMB3 :D
I think I've come up with a spelling for mitch's between runs word: "batich-ka-bazing!". Totally saving that for when I achieve a feat beyond my station lol.
Love Summoning Salt. Also, I didn't know you lived in Utah now. You've been less than an hour away essentially the whole time I've been watching you. Amazing! 😎
That video is what got me onto you, you seemed like an unlikeable villian during the video for some reason, having followed you for a while, ive come to se you as a passionate and great person who just loves the game. Well done on your records, you're the people's champ
Yeah Summoning Salt's stuff is amazing and should be watched by any speed running fan. Thanks Mitch for adding some clarity to some of the stuff at the time.
Just hit subscribe now brother! =) Watched it right through. Amazing work by you guys. With SUCH talent and gifts from God Himself you should beat the level 100%! Every hidden ship, every level, every powerup, as fast as humanly possible!!! Most I ever saw was /w whistles so mostly world 8. Glad to see such gifts.
I'm glad speedrunners are taking the histories of their passions seriously now. As we've seen from 60's music the history is almost as good as the product. Someone should try and track down Blackhasu...
44:59 was it intentional that your 2020-self just perfectly alligns the shoulders with the chair+back of your past-self? You speedrunners.. always looking for perfection :-)
Hey @mitchflowerpower if the hands rng is deterministic, bump strat might be mathematically bad just sayin. Sure i guess youre 12% likely to win 3 heads or tails in a row on the same rng seed but on different seeds you might get no-hands more often in practice but idk
fuck this is inception: i only know about mitch because of summoning salt's videos (videos i watch over and over again cause of covid), and now all his classic mario progressions are outdated and I cant watch it anymore cause of mitch's (and kosmic's) advancements cause of his (their) updated WRs through youtube.
He’s speedrunning the game, so he has extremely intricate routing and hammer bro movement stuff to worry about, among other things. He’s not saying the world is intrinsically bad in the game, but rather that it has many pitfalls for speed runners.
I was watching your stream and... Shouldn't you make it so you have green visual squares in the start menu to help you out where to start the game? Shouldn't you grab your rom hacked video to help you see the top part of the level in 7th world to skip it?
You compare those two things like they’re both equivalent and that’s just…not true. The reasons for not liking keyboard playing on a console vs using an offscreen TAS guide aren’t even in the same category of concern.
I'd personally like to see a trend of using modern tools to upres the videos. Reduce it back to the original NES resolution, apply color filters to get it looking normal, then use a high quality upscaler. And I don't just mean for videos like this. It would just be nice in general. It would be like how we restore old film. Sure, this is how it looked on stream, but it's not how the game looked to the person playing it. Also, I'd love a trend of using pixel scalers when zooming in on blurry footage, so it doesn't make it more blurry.
I played smb3 for the first time today on the switch online SNES I managed to do a shell jump on the third level. I do play MM2, felt accomplished and took a screen record and somehow my joy con got disconnected couldn't figure out how to connect it
When I saw the thumbnail. I thought this was a fake. When I was a kid, I painstakingly got a hammer bro suit to Bowser, and the hammers just pass right through him. I wanted to test the myth that he was one shot by them. He is not. As far as I could tell, they didn't affect him at all. It was tricky to even get the suit into the castle. Your run speed is not fast enough in a hammer bro suit to get past the laser statue. You have to use a star.
I don’t understand your comment. Hammer kill on bowser is extremely fast, the hammers don’t simply pass through him without dealing damage. And you don’t need a star in bowser’s castle. What are you on about in this comment?
Mario moves ever so slightly faster through the dry Utah air. As SMB3 gets more and more optimized, you need all the time saving strats you can get to stay at the top.
Get your facts straight. The first speedrun of SMB3 was in the 1989 movie The Wizard.
That Summoning Salt video is the reason I started watching Mitch in the first place, and I'm so thankful for having found this wonderful community!
Same here.
Same
Me too!
Exactly

Summoning Salt makes the best stuff.
a true legend

Nice pfp. I love MtG

I like when Summoning Salt includes old janky VHS captures, helps put context around the timing of the progression.
The best Mario 3 speedrunner reacting to the best documentary on Mario 3 speedrunning? An hour of solid gold!
Sir/Ma’am, I think you mean platinum.
Salt is legendary. This was cool to get the co-sign from you on how accurate his reporting is. Salt videos are essential record imo for speedrunning and I am always stoked when he tackles a new game.
Mitch: hahah frubrurury
Also Mitch: how aboat that
Dig the insights. I like how you get excited about people being your times as much as you beating theirs.
My favorite part of any Summoning Salt video: “But then...” 😄
His writing his out of this world. His pacing is flawless, he keeps you on the edge of your seat all throughout, while making you learn a ton of interesting stuff as well. We are so lucky to have him in the community

Me, who has trouble with faces: They're the same picture.
As someone who only follows speedrunning casually, this was a _very_ insightful addition to SS's video.
Cheers, and Godspeed!
Summoning Salt makes 10/10 videos
getting on sda is the nerd equivalent of a jock in high school getting a division 1 scholarship!

Summoning Salt makes really good videos.

Your reaction to "it stood....for one month" it priceless
I like how Mitch's hat bill is chromakeyed out so the video actually plays in it.
59:00 looks like that run was beat by Zikubi within a day of this video coming out
Oh man, how awesome is Summoning Salt? I watch those videos over and over.

the whole (disclaimer) best run ever bruh, cant beat this bruh, and then it stood, .. for one month.. killed it! like well earned

Wondered if I missed a video of his. Now to watch the rest of the video.
Fascinating watch. Would love if SS could include some comments from the runners in his videos. "I almost lost it here." "This run was so crazy..."
I wish the SMB1 gods like AndrewG and Kosmic played SMB3 Warpless. They could be very good competitors for our boy Mitch.
Smb3 is big boi game, Andrewg has actually been trying smb3 but it seems he has stopped :( around a 54 time or so
