      Absolutely not.
Dr. Strange as a plot-device to justify this poor attempt to mimic _Into The Spider Verse_ , by itself, makes this movie unforgivable...
This is just a cartoonish production made to capture audience through the psychological weakness of the crowd.
Also a clear signal that MCU is undergoing to its creative declining phase, regardless of any financial factor that proves to be successful.

My favorite small detail was in May’s death. The first thing she says after she gets hit is “ I just got knocked on my ass.” The first thing May says in Spiderman 2002 is to Ben“ be careful you’ll get knocked on your ass”. Ben tells her that he already is. The screenwriter in me knew her next line was gonna be about power and responsibly. Love the subtle nod that she was taking over the archetype of Ben.
MJ waving at the Ned behind Peter was a nice callback to the MJ wave in 2002 as well.

The Loki variant comparison is so true when you put it that way! I like how Andrew’s and Tobey’s entrances aligned with where their Peter variants are in life. Andrew’s is energetic, ready to go, in his costume. We later learn he spends more time as Spider-Man, no time for Peter stuff. Where as Tobey casually strolls through the portal. He’s kind, quirky, wise. He gave me the Steve from Blue’s Clues viral video vibes. Like his whole demeanor felt like a warm hug with the advice others needed to hear “You’re amazing!”🤣We later learn he has more balance and making it work with MJ. I got the feeling he’s kind of retired and doesn’t suit up unless necessary.

I love that with this film, the "Homecoming" trilogy essentially becomes a reverse origin story for Spider-man; the inexperienced kid with powers being drawn in to a team with mentors showing him the way, but only now really coming into his own, finally getting the power and responsibility moment that had been lacking. That final swing at the end in a hand made costume to tell the world (and the audience) "I am Spider-MAN!" Tony Stark Jr is finally all grown up and finally his own man.

Even though I loved seeing Tobey back and it put a big smile on my face, I was surprisingly more impressed with Andrew Garfield. I always said he was not the problem with those movies, I just didn’t like the writing for the character, but here you can tell he was so happy that he got a second chance to play this character and actually gave him good material.
Hell even as someone who didn’t care when Gwen died in TASM2 (I know I’m heartless), I thought when he saved MJ was a great redemption arc for him and gave him closure and him making sure Holland’s Spidey didn’t go down the same path as him, same with Tobey once he stopped him from killing Green Goblin.

So much I can say about this movie. To me, Uncle Ben had always been a part of Peter’s life in the MCU, but it was never dwelled upon like in previous iterations. People have to remember that when Holland’s was introduced, we were merely two years removed from Andrew Garfield’s version, where a major complaint was that they covered the origin AGAIN. I like that they took the “Incredible Hulk” approach, in that they alluded to the origin, without outright saying specifics. Any fan knows the origin. I thought his dialogue with Tony in “Civil War” was perfect. The complaint about Tom’s being so intrinsically connected other Avengers never sat well with me, because this was the third time we were seeing a new version of Spidey. I thought it made his era more unique among the others. If you’re gonna do this character again, why tread the same ground? But now in hindsight, it’s clear to see that the “Homecoming” trilogy can be seen as an extended origin story. Yes we know the parameters of Uncle Ben’s death, and how it motivates him to be a hero. But with each movie (as well as appearances in Avengers movies), we see him go from this wide-eyed, innocent kid wanting to be the best hero possible; to see him experience the tough reality of how it affects his life and relationships; culminating in him coming to the cruel realization that the people he loved will always be the ones who pay for his life as Spider-Man. So we see him progress and become the “traditional” Spider-Man that we know. We always associate the “With Great Power” with Uncle Ben. However for THIS version, while his death plays a role in Peter becoming a hero; it’s Aunt May’s death and her giving the mantra that results in Peter becoming SPIDER-MAN. Honestly, I thought it was extremely well done. He’s not separate from the MCU, but now he’s in a position where he can truly redefine his place within it. Perfect metaphor for transitioning from teenager to adult. Much like how we had to wait a decade for Steve to get his dance with Peggy, maybe we’ll have to wait and see Peter reunite with MJ. Can’t wait to see the movie again, and can’t wait to see where his version of the character goes within the MCU! Okay, rant over. Sorry lol. Can’t express how much I’ve loved y’all rewatching these movies. Great crew, great talks! Loving the channel. Looking forward to continuing with the Matrix with y’all.

For me, this is my favorite Spider-Man movie, barely edging out Homecoming because it delivered on an arc started in Civil War that I always knew they were going to get to. I let a lot of things slide in Homecoming (like him not swinging through skyscrapers, the Iron Man Jr. suit, being Tony's protege, etc.) because It was different but had the Spidey feel, and I always felt like they were going to lead up to him becoming the traditional, on his own Spider-Man eventually, and they delivered on that.
I even predicted around Far From Home's release that a 3rd movie would end with him in a traditional homemade costume going out to stop a crime, and they did just that 😊

Also, Dr.Strange can make Spider-Man not escape or hold him in place without escaping or kill Spider-Man without even trying. Don’t y’all see what’s going on here? This film demonstrates that MCU has been spoon-feeding us a Spider Man origin story all along: they just did it over 6 movies rather than one.
The narrative role that Uncle Ben played as a first mentor/father and whose death sends Peter on the path of responsibility is divided among Tony Stark, Dr. Strange, Tobey's Peter, Garfield's Peter, and ultimately, Aunt May. It's pretty ingenious planning.
In fact, there are a lot of narrative parallels between the Homecoming Trilogy to the Star Wars prequels (I am NOT comparing quality, just thematic/storyt structure)
Homecoming - Phantom Menace: sets up main character and introduces a first lesson
Far From Home - Attack of the Clones: develops main character and extends first lesson
No Way Home - Revenge of the Sith: characters must make an culminating choice of great import that hammers that lesson home.
Civil War, Infinity War, Endgame - Clone Wars: in-between development
Which means the next MCU Spider Man trilogy has so many possibilities. Like Anakin Skywalker, we have broken Peter to down to his most basic components, taking everything away from him. He is now entirely alone. The next films have the opportunity to build him up again.
PS. To Winston's quibble with Matt catching a brick, we live in a movie universe where an unaugmented Shang Chi trained by punching a wooden pole for decades. Matt Murdock can catch a brick in this universe XD.

35:44 I see a lot of reactors/reviews making this connection and I don’t get where everyone is pulling that from. In Civil War, the woman in hallway scene by the elevator with Tony Stark is played by Alfre Woodard (on her IMDB the character’s name is Miriam) and she says “I work at the State Department in Human Resources. It’s boring but helped me save enough money to help my son go to school.” She specifically calls out where she works. The admissions officer in No Way Home is played by Paula Newsome (on IMDB the character has no name, just listed as MIT Assistant Vice Chancellor). They aren’t the same. It’s a completely different actress and character. I only point it out because I remember spotting Alfre Woodard in Civil War when I first saw it so I thought I missed her again here but nope it’s different.

  • @Playhouse76

I get why they pulled further back from Ben and giving that significance to May, but a acknowledgement of him in the rooftop scene and/or seeing his gravestone would've been good. It's clear that Ben didn't serve the same role in the MCU as he did in the comics or in the Maguire and Garfield films, but he did exist. They obliquely reference him in 'Homecoming' when Peter tells Ned he doesn't want May to know he is Spider-Man because she'd already gone through a rough year. (The guys hitting on hot May because she's recently single also speaks to it.) And, in Far From Home, the suitcase with Ben's initials. The focus clearly needed to be on May and her relationship with Peter, but just owning that Ben was still there would've been nice. Maybe we'll see him in the 'Spider-Man: Freshman Year' series.

    I have a theory.
Before the pandemic the original schedule was for Dr. Strange Multiverse of Madness was supposed to be released before Spiderman No Way Home.
I think originally the Dr. Strange in this movie WAS supposed to have been the 'Evil' Dr. Strange from What If.
I think once COVID hit and they were forced to flip flop the two releases th6ley basically had to re-write a lot of that plot point on the fly which is why some of the dialog is clunky with him and Peter and why stuff shown with him in the trailer (like the wink) was removed in the final cut.
Granted I have little to no evidence on this but-- my Peter sense is tingling..... ✌🏾✌🏾

33:30 Gotta say, I really dislike when people say this movie “fixed” Peter Parker or the other Spider-Man movies like the creators regretted what they made or something... Coy sounded like one of those “Iron Boy jr.” people and I didn’t realize he seemed to feel about this way about the MCUs Spider-Man🙃 Also, I don’t think the reference to the “Iron Boy jr” joke in the movie wasn’t to acknowledge those fans and then saying “we got you” or whatever, I think it was to make fun of those people.
1:39:55 Also saying we finally have Spider-Man🙄 We HAVE HAD SPIDERMAN THE WHOLE TIME. Now he’s just the Spider-Man that we recognize the most. I’m not loving this “Tom Holland hasn’t been Spider-Man these past 5 years type of dialogue going on. Just feels like we are invalidating the other movies.

I understand where people like Coy are coming from, due to reading the comics growing up.
But, non comic book people? Hell no.
I didn't mind the MCU going in a different direction with Tom Holland's Spider-Man from the start.
At the end of NWH, Tom now a "traditional" Spider-Man made sense because of his character arc.
Hell, the combination of the classic suit and the snow and the orchestral version of Holland's theme and the final swing made me proud to have witnessed this growth and appreciate what the previous two films accomplished.

I think Ned's ease at magic is explainable. First, the slingring portal is some base level magic, that's why in Dr. Strange its the first thing they teach him, they also explain its mental as well. Strange was a medical doctor for years, rigid, only one way to do things, strict, makes it hard to learn magic something existing in defiance of logic and reason. That's why Strange had the block, but once hurdled just destroys magic knowledge because now that he's accepting his skill and innate ability comes out. But for Ned, he's probably heard for years and years his grandma saying their family is magic and it's cute or whatever, but then his best friend becomes Spider-Man, then aliens become real, then he gets space magicked out of existence, then fights fake elementals made of drones, and then knows Dr Strange is real and can do magic, I feel all this makes him mentally much more compatible with doing magic, giving him a faster grasp on a base spell, it doesn't mean tomorrow he could use the time stone to defeat Dormammu or whatever. It's pretty reasonable honestly

  • @Cognizant1

Kristian, the thing about Ned being able to open portals is that Ned already believed in magic, due to what his nana had told him. Strange absolutely didn't believe in magic, and he believed that his "power" lived in his hands, which were broken. Strange had a harder time learning to wield magic because he was so psychologically opposed to the idea of it. Ned wasn't. I thought that was brilliantly handled.

That wasn't the same lady that talks to Tony in civil war. Unless it was the same character played by 2 different actors. Alfre Woodard was the mom in civil war

I love the straight up movie talk. The live show works for many people but I'm not one of them. Listened to your Matrix reviews, and subscribed back up. Then this review? This is what I'm talking about.

Thanks for this Rewatch series Kristian, it's been great. You guys definitely caught a lot more in "No Way Home" than I did.
The one problem I have with this movie is that MJ and Ned no longer know who Peter is, essentially "One More Day"ing it. I thought that they would know Peter and Spider-Man as two separate entities, but them not knowing who Peter is is a bit much of a stretch for me. Were they no longer in the same classes at high school??
But MJ is still wearing the necklace that Peter got her during "Far From Home" in that last coffee shop scene - might be too much of a nit to pick - could be a continuity goof.
I realise that .that Spider-Man has always been a tragedy,, but in this movie, he loses Aunt May, essentially his mother, his best friend, and the love of his life. (And maybe his Avengers membership??)
This definitely felt to me like a modern day comic run coming to an end, where the current creative team clears the decks for the next team to pick up with a new Number 1 issue.

Pretty sure electro never found out Peter Parker was Spider-Man. As goblin (Harry) didn’t realise Peter Parker was Spider-Man until after the end fight with electro in which Harry arrives after electro is already defeated and then only finds out once he sees Gwen standing next to spiderman

You're 100% correct. I've theorized that Dr. Strange might've not realized that the botched spell didnt just transport anyone who knew Peter Parker was spiderman, but anyone who felt they knew Spiderman on a personal level. Because even though Max didnt know Spidermans name was Peter Parker, he still felt like Spiderman and him were best friends with each other.

The spoiler review I was waiting for, especially after all the rewatch videos. Saw NWH in IMAX experience and it was incredible. A comic book movie's comic book movie. I need to watch it a couple more times.

I used to do sidewalk demolitions and plant sidewalk trees. I could catch a brick. Daredevil could definitely catch a brick with both eyes closed.

I loved this movie. The only thing that bothers me is that I think the whole reasoning for Peter & Aunt May wanting to cure the villains is kind of selfish. These villains are from different realities and them being there could potentially cause severe consequences in the universe as a whole. I was on Dr. Strange’s side… they just dealt with a reality/time altering event w/ Thanos in Endgame and now they’re doing the same thing bc Peter’s friend’s couldn’t get into college? I know Peter’s just a kid but you’d think after dealing with Thanos would give you more awareness of doing actions that could have universe-altering consequences. To me, it’s essentially Peter’s and May’s fault for all the bad stuff that happens in this movie…. Still love it though! But there are plot holes

Well I was cool with it because they really just saved these particular variants in order to save their lives.
