Didn't know where to put this but I can't make the cleethorpes meet and greet barring some sort of a miracle. I do end up in Healing a lot on a Wednesday morning so fingers crossed I might meet you in passing tomorrow. Keep up the good work. I'm loving the east lindsey series as well.

Cheers Gavin! If you're there, great, if not pleasure to have seen you back in Scunthorpe :D

I know the town very well, having started my first career there in 1968 on Eastgate, which gave a fantastic view of the Minster. Revisited a few years ago, staying in the Saracens Head and I am delighted to report that not much had changed in the intervening 50 years. A great town, well covered in the episode - thank you Andy and Nicky.

Lovely place. Went to the Workhouse, then a part of the town, Seeing this I didn't realise there was so much more there, we missed loads. Definitely need to re-visit

Oh yes indeed! Southwell Minster is easily the best landmark I've recorded this year. And I've seen a few!

What an interesting town. Never knew Southwell was the home of the Bramley Apple.

We didn't until we visited, my mind was blown! I think its one of those things Southwell likes to keep to itself, or so it seems. Either that or the Minster just overshadows everything else

The building in Easthope the two storey house was for the worker the lived on site for the gasworks behind the property next door was the office for gas works and coal merchants and Allan's haulage

I've heard so much about Southwell that I was expecting it to be much larger than it is. Population 7400 was a huge surprise to me.

Yeah not a big town by any means! Our route covered a good 70%-80% of it

@@TheVillageIdiot This video did make me remember another man with a UK-traveling mission: Lawrence Edmonds, who drunkenly accepted a bet requiring him to lick every cathedral in the country within a couple of years. Southwell Minster is actually one of a few cathedrals where he got caught in the act by a stranger. He's blogged about all of his adventures and got officially recognized as a pilgrim by the Anglican Church after he successfully completed his quest, including him in an exhibition in York Minster. It's truly one of the greatest pieces of non-fiction I have ever read.

What? That's MENTAL! Love crazy stuff like that so I'm going to have to look into that one! :D

@@TheVillageIdiot You'll love it. Lawrence writes in such a hilariously poetic way to describe his adventures, the emotions he felt and even what the cathedrals taste like. There's something beautifully British about the way he words everything.

noting that you put a disclaimer in for pronunciation, good idea too, even locals pronounce this in one of two ways, no mention of the workhouse though

    • @TheVillageIdiot
      @TheVillageIdiot  ปีที่แล้ว +1

That's because the workhouse isn't in Southwell's boundaries. It's in Upton's. See that episode for that

I did wonder if that would be the case @@TheVillageIdiot

Thanks for this vid. I usually cycle through Southwell and continue along trail to Blisthorpe…a seven mile delight. I have noticed howarm and friendly people are here.

The old NT Victorian Workhouse is near Southwell. I'm surprised you didn't mention that.

I'm not. It ain't in Southwell. You need the Upton episode!

For the uninitiated two 'old' pence is the equivalent to 1p, that's inflation for you😢

Indeed! I may have to make a video on old money I think. A lot of youngsters won't understand how it used to be
