Denise, I finally got how you hide the yarn tails. I have tried and tried, but this video did that for me, plus I also learned how to add a contrasting yarn for the heel without cutting the working yarn. How awesome is that!!! You are so dear and such a sweetheart!! I love your lessons and I will continue watching and knitting and learning from you. You have such a pleasant voice - you are THE BEST!!!!!
Hello Denise! I am a complete beginner knitter and have recently discovered your channel. I absolutely love it! One day when I was feeling down, I was watching one of your videos, and your gentle voice and laughter/giggles really lifted my spirits. Thank you for all that you do. You are such an encouragement to many. Blessings!
I just wanted to thank you Denise. Based on this video and the detailed shadow wrap heel video, I decided to implement this heel on a second sock of a pair. And to make it harder, I needed a contrast heel to match the first sock ( which was done toe-up with an afterthought heel). So I went for it: cuff-down, contrasting shadow wrap heel AND without cutting the main yarn! Your videos are so good, I was able to do it in one go and it looks wonderful! Only 2 negatives and both down to my choices: 1) the two socks have a pretty different tension which is due to one being toe up and the other cuff down (and done a year apart 😂) so I learned a fact about my own knitting tension. And 2) I wasn’t able to bury the contrast heel ends as I knitted. This is because I didn’t take the time to watch the appropriate video on this and the heel end kept wrapping up onto the right needle, so I ended up just leaving them loose and will weave them in later. Wish I could show a picture as I am very proud of this sock. Thanks again. I think this will be my new sock baseline technique.
Thank you for these tutorials. I got your DK sock pattern with the shadow wrap heel and watched the videos and feel 100% confident to do my first heel.
I’m so grateful for your videos! I started my first ever sock, just finished watching your shadow wrap heel video, and see this video. Thank you for all your time in putting these videos together! 💖
Thank you for the clearest tutorial of the shadow wrap contrast heel! I’m knitting my first shorties ever and am using the shadow wrap heel for the first time. Love your podcast too.
Look at that beautiful face. Just the help I needed to remind me how to do Shadow Wrap. I couldn't pull it up in my rust memory banks! Thank you, darling Denise!
I love everything about your tutorials. Your intro music is happy, your face is beautiful and your smile makes me smile. This tutorial specifically is fantastic. I’m working on a pair of socks with contrasting heels and toes. This video has helped so much. I had a confusing moment when I reached the end of the first heel. You explained so perfectly how I needed to work that particular area. The matching sock will be much better thanks to you. Keep the tutorials coming!
Ooooh! I just came across this video and I went back and watched classes 9 & 10. Thank you so much, I love this heel and will incorporate it into the socks I currently have on my needles. Now I also need to go back and watch more of your videos!
Thank you so much for the lessons on the shadow wrap heel. It got my socks mojo back on track. I am currently knitting my fifth pair of socks so for for 2022. I plan on making 2 pairs per month this year.
I am a little late to this party but I’m glad I finally showed up. This heel is fabulous and you did an awesome job teaching it. I watched all the videos on the Shadow Wrap Heel and I appreciate all your tips and tricks. I just finished my first SW heel and it is beautiful and fits so well. Thank you.
thank u so much! i’m off to find the whole heel tutorial, i always use a flap and gusset because i’m just awful and short rows and afterthought heels usually end up looking too strange (to me) i love how your showing real time knitting and explaining the how and the why of what’s going on. So happy to find you!
Denise, you are the absolutely best knitting teacher ever!!! I watch your videos over and over. I do have one request...would you do a wrap and turn heel for us to see. I love shadow wrap but would also like to learn the short row wrap and turn heel. If you do not want to do that, fine, but would you recommend one for us to watch. Most are too fast.
I found you on you tube en I love your way of teaching. The next heel I wil use The Shadow Wrap Heel and later with my next sock I will use the way I saw on this video. I dont speak English but I can easely follow you .Thank You
I just discovered your TH-cam channel thanks to the Tricolibri podcast and I love what you do. I'm not super good in English but your videos are so well done and filmed to perfection and your voice very pleasant and luckily there is Google translation for me. Thank you for the video of the shadow wrap heel, a new heel to try for my next stockings, currently I use the Fish lips kiss heel which I like a lot too. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work. 🥰🧦🧶
I love knitting socks and am looking forward to written instructions for the shadow wrap heel. Your tutorials are great, but I could use a book, pamphlet...to cement the process in my mind.
Hi Lee, the written instructions for the shadow wrap heel can be find in my Soxploration Shadow Wrap Heel pattern, which is available on my website as well as Ravelry. There are links to both sites in the description box under the video.
Hi Cheryl, thank you for your emails and your message here. So glad you enjoyed this tutorial!! I added a mini tutorial for a shadow wrap short row toe on Instagram. A full tutorial is coming soon. I do not have a date yet!
Thank you for the video! As always, I love how detailed they are. I followed your tutorial on shadow wrap heel with contrasting colours and have finally managed to get a sock without holes. Yaaay! :) Learning to weave in ends as I knit was also super helpful. Presumably I can cut off the tails after the six stitches? I wasn't sure if they needed further weaving in. Should you get the chance, I would love to see a tutorial on a toe up sock :) Much love, Appu xx 💖💖💖
I did the shadow wrap heel on a Christmas stoking, it turned out beautiful, thank you for sharing your knowledge. I also would like to know what brand of knitting needles you use.
Question…I have watched both of these tutorials about the shadow wrap heel WITH breaking the yarn and without breaking the yarn, both with contrasting color heels. Why would you ever break the yarn if you don’t have to? If you have self striping yarn, is it better to NOT break the Yarn or to break it? Your tutorials are PHENOMENAL by the way! Thank you! 🙏
Ultimately It is really knitters choice. There is no right or wrong way. In my experience, I choose to break my the main because it make much cleaner corners and reduces the chance of forming a hole.
Thanks again for a wonderfully clear tutorial. I've learned so much from you! Bought my first knitting book - Saltwater Classics - based on traditional items from Newfoundland, Canada. For socks, tradition is to darn inside the heels, toes etc to form a second layer and increase strength. Love it but I don't know how to darn! Possible video?
Hi Valerie, Thanks so much for watching my tutorials. I"m so happy they've been so helpful. It is a great idea to darn your socks right from the start. There are so many daring tutorials right here on TH-cam that you may find helpful. Truth be told I've never darned a sock. I prefer to use slipped stitches to reinforce the "weaker" areas of a sock.
Wow this is interesting. First never did a short row heel and going to try this . Going to do Crazy Sox Lady Summer Sock Along this year 2022 And this is one I will attempt. Thank you.
@@EarthtonesgirlPodcast Turned out beautifully! I wish I had learned this heel sooner. The moment I made a mistake (inevitable when using black yarn...) I was able to tink back and fix it easily. That experience solidified my never going back to a GSR heel. Thank you so much🙏🏽
Denise…..thank you for another wonderful tutorial. Your videos are always so helpful and easy to follow. What type of needles do you use when using 2 sets of circulars? Thank you, again.
thank you for your videos! I knit socks on 9" circulars, and usually use a heel that I think you have referred to as copyrighted. I'm trying to figure out why you use two sets of needles rather than one magic loop. Does this help get rid of the hole where the heel starts? I am going to try the Shadow Wrap heel on my next set of socks on 9" circular, hoping to eleminate the hole. Even with the copyrighted heel, I often get a small hole that drives me crazy, I often go in with a small crochet hook and tighten the stitches up. Am I possibly not tugging tightly enough. Thank you again your videos are awesome
Your very welcome Nancy! To answer your question, I don't like the magic loop method and simply prefer to knit on 2 circulars. I learned from Cath Bordhi long before magic loop "showed up". And I love it. Regarding holes, as you said you may not being pulling tight enough at the "intersection".
Great video! Thank you. Are you creating your own colour pattern for this sock or using a self striping or self patterning yarn? and where can we find this?
Hi Denise, I'm very new to knitting socks, I was wondering what needles you are using in this tutorial? I only have 2 9" circulars but I'm interested in the ones you're using.
Hi Alejandra, You can stick with magic loop. Don't feel like you have to try this but if you'd like to add to your sock knitting bag of tricks then go for it!! I prefer 24" circular needles. 16" feels a bit too short and 32 is to long (for me).
I’m so sorry you can’t get the second part of the heel. You might want to watch the basic shadow wrap short row heel tutorial (class 9) and then revisit this one with the contrasting heel. And if that is still not working for you then maybe my teaching style is not for you. There are many other tutorials available here on TH-cam. I hope you do find the one that works best for you.
Yes and no. You can duplicate stitch over it when knitting it in a constrast color pull the ends a bit tighter. I find that gets rid of the blip. Truth be told though the finer the yarn the harder it is to hide.
Hi. What is your favourite ever sock heel? You mentioned once you didn’t want to do a tutorial on it out of respect for the creator, Can you tell me who or what it is called so I can look it up, please?
Then you knit the other half of the heel which is made by eliminating the twin stitches and creating triple stitches. All instructions can be found in my Shadow Wrap Heel tutorial and in my Soxploration Shadow Wrap Heel sock pattern.
Hi Nanette, The method that you were using to knit your socks does not matter. This can very easily be applied to DPNs. You are just distributing your stitches over the number of needles you are using.

Hi Alejandra,
You can stick with magic loop. Don't feel like you have to try this but if you'd like to add to your sock knitting bag of tricks then go for it!!
I prefer 24" circular needles. 16" feels a bit too short and 32 is to long (for me).

Yes and no. You can duplicate stitch over it when knitting it in a constrast color pull the ends a bit tighter. I find that gets rid of the blip. Truth be told though the finer the yarn the harder it is to hide.

It is definitely on my top five but I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite. It’s the Fish Lips Kiss Heel.
Hello, how many number skewers do you use?
Hi Fatima,
I’m not sure what you mean by that question. What are numbers skewers?
@@EarthtonesgirlPodcast Is it possible to set the video to türkçe translation?
Can I use this heel in a toe up patten?
Hi Deb,
Yes you can! Just follow the instructions as written.
How would I apply this for DPN's?
All of the heel stitches would be on one dpn and the instep stitches would be on the other (2) needles. You would then knit the heel as instructed.
What happens when you get to the 11 double stitches done and the ten in the middle
Then you knit the other half of the heel which is made by eliminating the twin stitches and creating triple stitches. All instructions can be found in my Shadow Wrap Heel tutorial and in my Soxploration Shadow Wrap Heel sock pattern.
What if you use DPNs?
Hi Nanette,
The method that you were using to knit your socks does not matter. This can very easily be applied to DPNs. You are just distributing your stitches over the number of needles you are using.
