Urban Kayaking on Westchester Creek NYC | Hidden Gem or Hazardous Waters?

  • Join me on a unique kayaking journey through the heart of the Bronx, exploring the hidden gem that is Westchester Creek. This waterway offers a surprising blend of urban grit and natural beauty. Discover lush green banks, diverse wildlife, and the city skyline as I experience unexpected sights, sounds, and odors. I even stopped for a peaceful lunch on the bank of the East River where a surprise critter makes an appearance. While the creek faces environmental challenges, its resilience and the surrounding nature create a truly unforgettable adventure, leaving me with a sense of hope for its future.

What you are doing is a tremendous public service. Every public official in a 50 mile radius should see what you are doing. Millions of us pass by these waterways every day totally oblivious to it all. Officials should not simply say they are for the environment. You are giving them a long laundry list of goals to set and complete to leave this world better than they found it. Everybody, wherever you are: flood the mayors' offices with phone calls demanding them to watch all these videos and start projects to clean these places up and bring people to them to enjoy them.

OH my Goodness!!!!!! I can't believe you went under the Union Port Bridge. You are in my stomping grounds. They built a new draw bridge and overpass for the cars. The Amazon Building used to be the Whitestone drive in back in the 70's. The Shell gas station is closed. They just opened Dunkin Donuts next door to it. I graduated from that High School. Gross in that water😵‍💫🤮🤢. My kids and I used to walk our dog along where you had lunch. He loved going over those big rocks. Brings back memories and I have a picture there, my daughter and our long gone dog, Chewy. Thank you for this vlog and stay safe. Oh I hope you sprayed alcohol and used antibacterial soap.

I grew up in the Castle Hill area and know this creek real well, I remember the working draw bridge long before they built the cross Bronx and the Bruckner express way. A lot has changed can't believe how many sunken barges and boats there are in the creek. There was only one when I lived there. I lived three blocks from those Sanitation incinerator stacks on Homer and Havenmyer ave. Thanks for the vitual trip home, beats 24 hour flight from where I am now. Cheers!

If you want to do some great paddling through undisturbed nature with no nearby traffic, airports, etc., come down to the Pine Barrens in NJ! There is the Wading River, Batsto River, Mullica River, Oswego River and more! If you are coming from NY, it may be best to plan an over-nighter. Plenty of camping!

Even graffiti artists are sailors. Lots of people have boats in the area he launched from.

Spent most of my life in that neighborhood. The 3 tall smoke stacks are a no longer in use NY Sanitation incinerator. , The construction is the Unionport drawbridge. It had become a major chokepoint in traffic and was being rebuilt ( while keeping it open ) . I left The BX in 2020 but I think it had been under construction since around 2016. At the end of the creek there was once 2 home heating oil companies who used to get deliveries via barges and small tankers. as a kid, I grew up watching airplanes and watching tugboats from my window. Schildwachter Oil used to receive oil from barges and small self propelled tankers on Westchester Creek. They were located at the head of the Creek. Now there is a marina above the Bruckner Interchange fixed bridges. NYC DEP will also deploy trash skimmer vessels to the containment boom at the head of the Creek.

Omg the rat at the end 😂 typical NYer. I came across your videos a few weeks back when u kayaked the Bronx River. I’m a lifelong NYer born in Manhattan raised in the Bronx and I never got to appreciate the outdoors with the exception of hanging out in front of our building or the local park ( mainly in the 80s and 90s) and now with my young nature loving son we live in Westchester and I’ve discovered that I too love the outdoors. I try to make the most of nature on the weekends with our son and I’m not sure if I could kayak any time soon I hope to try it someday. Thanks for the new to me perspective on NYC’s nature.

Perhaps you can do a multi day kayak packing trip up or down the coast to whichever destination and vlog each day as a new episode? Can maybe also by up the Hudson and camping along the way or along the Connecticut coast or down the coast to the mid Atlantic or something. Definitely extreme and you'd need to plan, but maybe a small tent with a few small supplies in your kayak and time it right.. just thinking it would def be a journey we'd all follow along!

Equipment reviews are interesting to anyone who's interested in kayaking.

I don't know if you have enough gear for a whole channel. I mean, what happens when you've reviewed your kayak, your cameras, your paddles, etc? Do you want to go out and buy new stuff so you can do more reviews? Otherwise, you might end up with a channel that has ten or twenty videos, and that's it.
You might be better served with a playlist on this channel about gear instead. A gear playlist. A how-to playlist, etc. I think some short videos in the mix might be helpful. I would definitely keep gear review videos on the short side (like under 15). idk

There are a lot of inlets and bays to explore in and around the Hudson River and Long Island Sound. Some of them are in urbanized areas but still contail lots of wildlife hidden from the average person. Annsville Creek, Mianus River, Norwalk River, Fishkill Creek, Hutchison River, etc

Pugsley Creek and the surrounding park, which Matt sort of skipped over quickly, is one of the most bio-diverse places in the city.
