I like to follow kayak adventures on TH-cam. Your's has become a favorite. Personality and quality of content are the most important things. It's pretty clear you've put a lot into improving your equipment and skill. I find myself looking forward to the next video.
Great video. I'm headed over the Pulaski bridge tonight to get some gas in Greenpoint. I'd stay away from Gowanus for now. I'm sure you saw the recent headlines this week that they're testing for cancer causing fumes coming from the canal. Probably not a good idea to breathe that in, lol.
I did read the articles. I think the testing is more of the air from the industrial sites / land vs. testing air due to the water from the canal. Either way, the industry in the area has polluted a lot around there. There's an organization called the Gowanus Dredgers that canoes the canal regularly.
It's all one sheet of plastic with internal supports. So, nothing to seal, it's all one piece. The plastic is very strong. They say the folds can handle 20,000 folds. Thank you for watching and commenting.
3:51, the word your looking for is moored. I hate it when I can't think of the right word. The interaction with Esaw at the scrapyard was wholesome. Thank you for this video, very interesting.

I don't think I could handle being hemmed in like that the whole time.I couldn't help but be scoping an emergency exit the whole time, and probably ruin what appears to be, for the most part, a pleasant little paddle. Thanks so much for sharing...
@JohnCompton1 I'm always looking for emergency exits. It's a good practice. Sitting in a kayak for a long time can get uncomfortable. It was a pleasant trip, though. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
@@TwoFeetOutdoors btw, are those sailboats occupied, maybe like the homeless in S.F., it's hard for the authorities to eject the occupants? They sure looked worse for wear, and the solar panels led me to believe there was some occupancy. And what a strange place for the boats to wind up.
@JohnCompton1 I believe you are right about your theory about people living on them. I didn't really didn't see many people, though. I don't know if they were down in the boats or away from them or what. It's very interesting but I can't confirm the situation behind them. If people are "homeless" living on them, it doesn't seem the city is doing much to stop it. Maybe that's why there's so many. 🤷

It’s interesting that businesses seem to have been allowed to hijack the public access to the water over the decades. I may be wrong, but I believe that most of the streets of the 5 boroughs were built right up to water’s edge so that the citizens had easy access to the water. Now many businesses seem to have gates there. (Maybe it’s “adverse possession”?) Not that I see the Gowanus or Newtown Creek as ideal swimming holes…😬 but, as you said, look at the little bit of peace and quiet you’ve been able to enjoy by just being off the streets. You have had to scramble to find some access. In a massive city, any little bit of respite can be gold. Thanks for interesting content! I ❤️NY!
Yes, obviously shipping and industry is so important to NYC and the area. Currently, it's sad that during heavy rains, there's solid waste that get released into some of these waterways because of overflow at treatment plants. Thank you for watching and commenting.
@@tomroggero Great point. A lot of these properties will...or should be, depending on the bureaucracy...rezoned for bigger residential buildings and public spaces even for new flooding resilience.
@dfrost6573 Historically, in NYC, it was considered poor to live by the water due to the amount of industry/shipping business that occurred there prior to roads and cars being the main mode of transportation. Most residential property was as far from the water as possible. Only the very poorest lived near the water. This is why 5th Ave (as far from the water as possible before hitting the park) has been considered one of the wealthiest streets.
Matt my good friend NYC tourism board should hire you as NYC ambassador because you make any NYC waterway into an amazing kayaking ride . Your videos are a feast for the eyes specially for those of us that been living in NYC and take our waterways for granted . 🫡🫡
0:13 -2:04 I'm pretty sure is L.I.C. went to H.S. there. amazing how they build up last 10 - 25 years. all the waterways in NYC were factories / manufacturing etc back in old day's & still is, until city change zoning laws & developers take advantage. on the other side opposite where you started 46:09 East River along the 50's - 90's once were all beer breweries. 27:46 my H.S. best friend lived there 3 blocks away Western Beef.45:09 I can already envision developers eyeing that large warehouse. another good one!🍺🍺🍺 Cheers

Yes, the clouds were def dark. Original forecast showed it would be more sunny. I would have preferred a more sunny video but I think the clouds contributed to the grungy theme a bit but I found the creek to be pretty nice. I try to have a positive outlook. 😀
This is awesome man. I live right near Newton Creek off the L train. Is it possible to list out your gear list? I'm really interested in doing this myself but I'd need to start from scratch.
Let me start by saying thank you for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it. Let me work on a basic gear list when I have a little more time. Thanks!
@@TwoFeetOutdoors Also how often do you get splashed by the water? Just because the water is home to one the largest oil spills in US history (Greenpoint oil spill). That would freak me out a little bit.
@dtegg91 Rarely if ever get splashed. Especially in those very calm conditions. The paddle drips but drips back down in the water. No concern for me. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
@@TwoFeetOutdoors Sorry to keep leaving comments, but just nerding out hard as I watch this video (been watching it in pieces). I've studied North Brooklyn history for years but have never seen a video like this from the water. At 21:20, you mention Empire Transit Mix: they were caught years ago (maybe 2002) for having built a pipe that dumped tons of ammonia-treated concrete sludge into the river. But more interesting is the "stairs" you mention are actually the old Plank Road (technically in Maspeth, Queens) from the 1830s, which ran across the creek. There's a historical sign there if you stop and visit the area you pass at 35:00. Even back then, the area where Empire Transit Mix is now was described as a "hellish expanse of Fuhrman’s Island (home to Peter Cooper’s Glue Factory and Conrad Wissel’s Night Soil and Offal Dock, amongst other notorious or malodorous occupants)."
@dtegg91 I REALLY appreciate the wealth of knowledge you are contributing to the comments section. I provided the basic visual tour, and you are providing amazing information and details. Thank you so much. I hope you check out and comment more info on other videos of mine.
You're welcome! I try to go to interesting places that people might like to see but may never go. Such a cool perspective of New York City. 😎 Thank you for watching and commenting.
Great video Matt! That creek looks clean to me. Cleaner than some other areas you have been in. I was amazed by the Bronx River. That creek would be a river in my part of Texas!
My father fell in Newtown Creek in his first communion suit in 1935. According to the New York City Library it was already very polluted. Good thing he was the youngest of four brothers and there was no one else to pass the white suit on to.
There's so much great work to do with the NYC waterways and coastline - even Newtown and...yes...the Gowanus lol. I hope I get to see more of it done. The K-Bridge at night is a beautiful sight.
My heroooo! I want to do that too! I carefully followed your trip on the map while watching the video! I will definitely go and try kayaking there and in Gowanus!
Picking up my Eddyline Kayak Saturday. Spoke with lady who is Kayak instructor today. She will give my wife and I lessons. All we need to do is hit the water.
Awesome!! You're going to love that kayak! Great to get lessons and learn more to build confidence. Be safe out there. Good luck. Thank you for watching and commenting. Happy paddling. 😊
Another great video. Despite the clean-up efforts, not sure I would venture into the Gowanus Canal -- there are still days it stinks to high heaven -- probably a good thing you were unable to find an access point.
Interestingly, there's a group known as the Gowanus Dredgers that paddles the Gowanus regularly. Access is challenging. They have a private launch. I may do one of their free paddles to check it out 1st. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Another great video! If you were contemplating doing the Gowanus Canal, your bravery is commendable (it is anyway). I read things about how polluted these waterways are-things like 14' of "Black Mayonnaise" on the bottom. Interestingly, the two people you spoke to were very friendly. There is a club called "Liquid Sky" who periodically circumnavigate Manhattan. You seem to have strong paddle skills, and you could make the best Urban Kayaking video ever on that trip!
Thank you so much for this awesome comment. I really appreciate it. The polluted waterways are intriguing to me, and I've definitely heard of the black mayonnaise. I find that I have a desire to see these places for myself but really want to see if there's still a hint of beauty and any wildlife still present in these areas. It always seems like the people I run into are friendly and want to talk to me. I'd be more comfortable circumnavigating Manhattan in a full on sea kayak rather than my Oru. Oh, by the way, I did go to the Gowanus Canal on Saturday and recorded a video. You're the 1st to know. Stay tuned. I'm editing it this week. Some fun stuff!! Hope you'll check our some of my other videos when you have time. Thank you for watching and commenting.
I wish you have a little image to show where you are approximately on a small map on the corner of the video. Kind of like how racing is televised. Keep it up man! Bronx River one was great.
Every once in a while I hang out at one of the dead end streets (overlooking the creek) on the Brooklyn side. It's pretty cool to see the creek from this perspective.
That's awesome! Coming from someone local to Newtown Creek, that means a lot to me. Hope you'll checkbout some other videos of mine when you have time. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Wow, thank you so much!! Means a lot to me. Thank you for watching every video. You could be the 1st person to do so. You get a Two Feet Outdoors trophy 🏆.
I can see how it might be a little "daunting" to see how difficult it would be to get out of the water should the boat sink or be damaged. Steep docks and piling would be hard to get up in an emergency.
@ralphwatten2426 Yes, definitely. It did appear that the businesses along the creek had emergency ladders down to the water. Probably required by OSHA. You kind of get a trapped feeling, though. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
I love these videos you're doing. You're passing through places I've lived... although I'm more of a land-lover so you're showing me a new viewpoint..... LOL Western Beef. Yeah, that is a small chain that I'd never heard of until moving to that area. It's uh.... unfancy. Keep up the good work.

I don't know if you seen a videos couple that finds a safe with almost $100,000 in it that is my wife and I maybe you want to try magnet fishing one day off of these bridges! I do hear they're extremely polluted though lol
That's so cool! Yes, I actually recently read that story and saw it on the news. I'm not super worried about the cleanliness of the water. I def think I'd enjoy magnet fishing and I'd love to join you guys one day. You want to avoid Newtown Creek and the Gowanus Canal after a heavy rain fall. There's more raw sewage after heavy rain. When / how ofter do you guys go out?
Was doing some research on the creek itself and the boats. Unfortunately due to massive dumping and raw sewage over the years while the creek looks clean it does not test that way. And there’s a whole history on the boats. Thanks for brining me along.
Exactly! Did you see the family of Canada Geese 🇨🇦 near the end of the video? Simply amazing! Just gotta get out there and look for it. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it. I would have loved to check the sailboats out a bit more but you never know what you might run into. Thanks again for watching.
Just a safety tip. Here in Maryland on waterways, we have a pole with an orange flag for adding visibility . Just like kids have a flag on their bicycles.
I’m a Steamfitter, and I did a lot of work, there at the water treatment plant. I used to hang out with the DockBuilders there, for coffee and lunch. They had a floating dock, and their workboats, there. At that time ( several years ago ) that water was so foul, I was more afraid of getting sick from that, than any of the water at the plant.
I would be so afraid that I'd touch that water, or worse, fall in! Especially when you pointed out whatever that was that was bubbling in the water. This was a fascinating video and thank you so much for bringing it to us. I'm glad I found your channel!
Thank you for watching and commenting. The bubbling as I'm told is an aeration system. I believe that water stays very stagnant in that area and lacks oxygen so the aeration system helps the water. I'm glad you found my channel too. Hope you'll check out other videos of mine when you have time.
What an awesome channel we get to see parts of the city that no one thinks about. Never heard of Western Beef , they,re all over NYC good supermarkets.
I spend too much time on the water and in the woods and somehow Western Beef Supermarkets went under the radar in my brain. I can tell you where all the outdoors stores are. 🤣🤣🤣
That was EPIC! So amazed how you are in one of the most densely populated areas and you only see a few people. Just surreal! Glad you didn’t encounter and black mayonnaise! 😢
I heard of that black mayonnaise. 🤣🤣🤣 I didn't try to scoop the bottom. So amazing to be surrounded by millions of people and only see a few. Very peaceful and quiet. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Thank you so much for the video- we have inflatable standup paddleboards and live in the area, where New town Creek is the closest waterway. I've been a little nervous to try paddling around the creek because of pollution concerns, but your adventure has inspired me to give it a shot :)
Awesome!!!! Just try to stay out of the water. That launch is nice! The east river is nice to when the conditions are calm. Glad I inspired you. Thank you for watching and commenting.
those wet weather drains are only storm drain discharges for rain. they shouldn't have sewer or septic drains into waterways hopefully. i know some areas stink and they may be very polluted areas from commercial runoff and the water is probably toxic.
@COPPER71 Yes, I believe you are right. There are, however, CSO's which are Combined Sewer Overflows that flow raw sewage into our waterways during rain events (including in Newtown Creek). Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
a bit depressing. all that shoreline and effort for independent business. Nobody uses the water much anymore.. the steel people are very smart. Way more tonnage across the waters. Thanks for the ride. We used to go to container docks in the 80s..sometimes smaller places than expected. These water ways made me wonder. It was much worse back then. I am up in northern half of maine with a ten foot kayak. I paddle alone all the tme. it is more dangerous there.. yelling for help where there is no people, let alone cellphone..I am a bit crazy like that. I visit islands in the big rivers that have no interference, straight oaks colonials could not cut..and bald eagles...lots of wildlife... and a deep breath that feeds the soul. New york city area had an even bigger habitat as a warmer welcome place...once upon a time.
How do you maneuver the view on your camera while paddling? Another cool video. That little park you were wondering about was the remnants of an old toll bridge from the 1800's called Plank Rd Public Shoreline. You paddle right past some of the remaining wooden piling structure.
Yes, you might have missed it but I put a little title pop up on the screen with the name there. My new editing technique. Lol. I appreciate you watching and commenting. Oh, my main camera is a 360⁰ camera so I can edit to change positions and pan etc. Pretty cool.
Once upon a time, Newtown Creek flowed through wetlands and marshes. It must have been beautiful. Then industrialization in the 1800s came along, the wetlands were filled in, and the creek became an industrial sewer. You're brave to kayak a Superfund site.
@AK-ey2uy I've watched a few videos regarding this history of Newtown Creek. You're completely right about the wetlands and marshes. It's unbelievable to imagine that at one time, there was natural beauty before it was influenced by industrialization by man, massive oil spills, raw sewage, etc. I just want to see these waterways with my own eyes and show them to others.
I live in NY and I often bike over all this bridges. Thank you for showing us what it looks like from bellow. Amazing video !!!

A folding kayak, amazing! How does it seal it's self. Love watching u and hearing the water. Be safe.
It's all one sheet of plastic with internal supports. So, nothing to seal, it's all one piece. The plastic is very strong. They say the folds can handle 20,000 folds. Thank you for watching and commenting.

Not just about swimming in it, but also being able to SEE it usually helps with keeping it clean. When it's not so visible people care less.
@@tomroggero That's true! I agree.

@@TwoFeetOutdoors Also how often do you get splashed by the water? Just because the water is home to one the largest oil spills in US history (Greenpoint oil spill). That would freak me out a little bit.

I can see how it might be a little "daunting" to see how difficult it would be to get out of the water should the boat sink or be damaged. Steep docks and piling would be hard to get up in an emergency.

those wet weather drains are only storm drain discharges for rain. they shouldn't have sewer or septic drains into waterways hopefully. i know some areas stink and they may be very polluted areas from commercial runoff and the water is probably toxic.
