Brooklyn Kayaking Adventure: Exploring an Abandoned Submarine & Coney Island Creek

- Come with me as I paddle along Coney Island Creek in Brooklyn NYC, cook lunch with a view, and take in the sights and sounds of the natural beauty of the city. Coney Island Creek is home to amazing wildlife, many burnt out ships and barges, and even a yellow submarine named the Quester I! I had to stop and explore the sub up close and see what it was all about. The Quester I was made from salvaged metal by a shipyard worker in Brooklyn, but failed to launch during its first attempt and has been stuck ever since.

Hey Matt!
I have to give a huge shout-out to you!!
Your Bronx River video woke something up inside of me and inspired me to get my own foldable kayak (I went with Tucktec) and get out there on my own. I watched a lot of different videos and did a lot of research to prepare myself. I've never kayaked before in my life nor did I ever have any interest until I saw your video.
Basically I've been sitting home on my days off watching TH-cam videos... cooking, van life, and recently I found your kayaking videos which led me to think to myself, why am I sitting here watching this when I could be living it instead???
So.... Matt, thank you!
I visited Coney Island Creek yesterday and it was beautiful and awesome! I had so much fun!
I'm embarrassed to post my video because I don't have the skills yet and it didn't come out like your videos, not even close. But I'm learning.
Thanks again and I hope you post more videos soon.
Today I'm thinking about checking out a creek in Staten Island I saw on go paddle.com
Wow, I love every bit of this! So amazing! Now that you are living it, please don't stop watching! This made my day. Thank you. I appreciate it more than you know.
I will definitely keep watching your videos, very cool!!!
Today I launched out of Gerritsen kayak launch inlet and it was great 👍👍👍
Parking right next to the entrance.
If you haven't been there it's nice to check out
Keep on keeping on!!!
That building to the right is a storage unit business.
Same here. I've never kayaked in my life and I asked my sister if I can join her the next time she does! 😆 I told her about these foldables and she didn't even know about them.
@@DannyJustiniano That's really cool 😎. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it. Kayaking is a lot of fun. You'll enjoy it.
From a Coney Island native, thank you, for a great video👍👍👍👍❤❤
@marilynt-smalls1094 Thank you so much. I really appreciate you watching and commenting. Have you seen my most recent ship graveyard video? 👍👍👌👌❤️❤️
My father who has lived in NYC all of his life and knows nearly every street (having worked as a NY cab driver) was intrigued and sat down to watch this with me and he loved it. He didn't know this creek existed and was in awe of the submarine.
That's really awesome. If you haven't watched yet, check out my newest video, the Staten Island Ship Graveyard. You'll enjoy it with your father too. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
Many years ago, a friend and I went on a hike from the amusement area, through the neighborhood of Coney Island (so many fruit trees in people's yards) and into the area I knew as "Six Diamonds" behind the new Home Depot. WHen my son had played little league at the ballfield, I remembered wandering towards the creek and seeing so much trash thrown into the creek -- refrigerators, washing machines. But that day we were looking for weeds -- or plants -- and we found amazing plants growing in the border around the balllfields above the creek. There was someone living up there, in a sort of dugout, on the emabankmet, with a few fishing lines permanently laying in small trenches in the creek bank, so we skirted their space. A memorable day. So much to see in the city.
@@megfeeley2559 Thank you for sharing this story. I appreciate it. Thank you for watching and commenting.
I was born in Brooklyn 80 years ago, left in 1976 and never heard of that Submarine. You have gone to places I never went to. Thank you for these videos in areas I knew of but never went to. It makes me nostalgic. I did visit my mom there until 2015. Isn’t it terrible how people have such disregard for other peoples property and the pollution they create. 👍👍😊❤️
Thank you sir for watching! I really appreciate it and appreciate the detailed comment.
Dude I really enjoyed this video to see Coney Island from another perspective great job 👏🏾 sir

North and South Brother Island, and or even execution Light house off city island. Hope you can check these out.
Very cool that you do this. Wish i had the time to see what you see. Very cool. You give me inspiration to do this with my two young boys. Hopefully when there older. Keep on paddling buddy!!
I'll look into those. I did just paddle yesterday at Pelham Bay Park and Hog Island as well as a few other small islands. So beautiful! Thank you for commenting and watching. I really appreciate it.
@@TwoFeetOutdoors amazing keep up great work. looking foward to that video.
Thanks for another great video.. It's a mini history lesson on things mostly forgotten to time. New York has a lot of forgotten history, but not to be surprised, as it was one of the original 13 colonies back in the day. I laughed to myself, as you are continually seeing so much debris in the water., but at least no E-Bikes to pull out of the water this time. Keep up with the cool videos in spirit of exploration. As always, love the videos and narration.. Well done 👍
Thank you for watching. I really appreciate it and appreciate the compliments.
Anyone else can’t stop watching this channel? I thought I was a life-long New Yorker. I’ve ridden every train line to every part of the city, but this channel has led to new discoveries as I never have been able to explore these waterways. Thanks for your original, fascinating content that has opened the eyes of this 60-something year old New Yorker. 😮 🔥 😮
WOW!!! Thank You SO Much!!! 😊 I appreciate you saying that! Means the world to me! Thank you for watching and thank you for this amazing comment!
this only my 3rd vid of his, love this content. lifelong nyer too, 50 yrs. never knew there was a stranded submarine in nyc. The new york waterway, little explored, great avenue for this channel.
also want to add.,,what a time to be alive, the technology ...a foldable kayak that folds into a back pack...amazing
@dyl923gonz7 Thank you so much!! I really appreciate you watching and commenting.
@dyl923gonz7 So cool right!! I enjoy it. 😉
Amazing the amount of ships around New York City. I realize it’s a large Seaport, but it’s hard to believe so many were just left to rot.
@Mag_Aoidh Thank you for watching and commenting. Did you also watch my ship graveyard video?
That was a fun little trip. I live very close to the area for the last 35 years and have ridden my bicycle over the Cropsey Ave bridge to Coney Island. The water below is very polluted which I'm sure you have already known. It was fun to see the same view as I have seen for many years but thru a boat ride. I so enjoyed taking this little relaxing trip with you. I am happy you did not go underneath the second "grate" as I too felt it was a little low and did not want you to fall into the water, that would not have of been fun.
Thank you again for taking us on this little excursion.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate you watching and commenting.
As a New Rochelle resident in Westchester county, Id love to see you kayak anywhere around here :)
Here's a link to my video at Pelham Bay Park. It's incredibly beautiful. You have to see the whole thing to appreciate ALL the views. That's the closest I get to New Rochelle for now. I have a few ideas for the future. Hope you'll stick around to the channel and check out some other videos. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Please go to Staten Island Boat Graveyard. I have taken pictures with a drone but would like to see it from your perspective. There is so much to see in that location. Even on the jersey side. Wish I could film your journey via drone shots. I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS.
The water way that splits staten island and new jersey, has a boat graveyard, it's by the Lowe's. I believe the water way is called ""Great Fresh Kills""
Thank you for the suggestion.
I have no idea how I stumbled on your videos but actually very good. I was wondering I watch a lot of moto vloggers and sometimes they'll put up a map of where they are or where they're going. Some people use relive app IDK if it works with rivers. Nothing crazy, You've half convinced me to get a kayak and you never know if I might want to recreate the adventure you're on.
Keep up the hard work.
I'm working on adding additional items (like maps) etc potentially in the future. Thank you for commenting.
Do Wallabout Bay or Maspeth Creek. Nice call with the Nathan's at Coney Island.

I just pulled up the map to check out this sub in my old neighborhood-which I knew nothing about until just now-and there's the sub! Very cool. But the fact that the city has left the sub and the other vessels sitting there all these years, is not cool. ...Thanks for sharing.
Check Google maps satellite images. So crazy! Thank you for watching.

would you ever consider paddling out to the pier of the bridge? I'm sure a bunch of us would love to see that POV.
Paddling out to the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge? Likely not, too much of a shipping channel. I try to avoid big moving objects with big wakes.
Thanks for a great video! Shame that they blocked your progress with that very low screen, I wonder if it was placed there for a purpose and what that purpose might be? Keep the great content coming!
Thank you. Not sure why it's there. You can probably pass it at lower tide.
Good job! Somehow you showed up in my youtube feed. I wish youtube would bring back hashtags or something because i get so much crap in my feed and new cool channels like yours rarely pop up. Have a good one!

Review of your Oru Kayak would be really appreciated 👍
Yes, some reviews of products are in the works.
I was thinking the same thing. Also if you can show how you put together the Ori and take it apart. Don't forget to review your stove.
I just took possession of a Oru Coast kayak. I got the basic bundle. As I am still a bit big but working successfully losing weight and feeling much better I am acquiring more gear life vest, sump pump, etc. I am taking swim lessons. My wife insists on this. I have thought about more stuff as my wife and daughter are also interested too. I am even considering giving this Oru kayak to daughter as she has a Toyota Camary and I think she is not ready for idea of roof rack! I am looking at the Eddyline Sandpiper 130 for myself and wife. We will see bc a lot can be said for convenience of the Oro!
U ever thought of putting a go attached to the bottom of your kayak to capture underwater life
I actually have an underwater case for my camera. I'll try it in my next video very soon.
Would like to see a kayak review as well.

There is a pier as well. I wish that you would have showed it!
@marilynt-smalls1094 Where? I didn't notice one. This was my 1st time paddling the area so I wasn't familiar with all the little details but the main goals was the submarine. 😀
@@TwoFeetOutdoors It is on the same side where you sat to eat. The pier is pretty small compared to others. It's on the side where the rocks are. It doesn't go far out. If you would have gone to the top of the rocks, you would have been in "Kaiser park". The park has all the information about the yellow sub, horse shoe crabs, and more. Maybe next time👍👍👍👍
@@marilynt-smalls1094 Ahh, okay, yeah, I didn't go close to Kaiser Park. Next time. Thank you.
Congrats on you tube milestone! I have a curious question: Do you know on TV, who Number 6 was?

My ex girlfriend lived right across the street from the yellow abandoned submarine. we would go to the park and see it.
I bet it looks really cool from Kaiser Park at low tide.
Excellent! I just discovered your videos. Love them, inspiring. Could you tell me what make of Kayak you use and if it might accommodate a 6' 4' guy? thanks.

That submarine use to be owned by someone. I completely forgot who the person was. They wanted to ether tow it out or actually use it to get to sea. But something happened and it was run aground. And was left where she is there today. I could be wrong. Please, correct me if I am.
I did talk about some of the history, etc. during the video.
This is from Wikipedia "Quester I is the name of a 45-foot (14 m) submarine built in 1967 by Jerry Bianco,[1] a shipyard worker in Brooklyn, New York City. Bianco built the submarine from salvaged metal, with the goal of either raising, or salvaging valuables from, the wreck of the Italian passenger liner SS Andrea Doria, which sank off Nantucket Sound in 1956 after being hit broadside by another liner." In 1967, after three years of part-time construction efforts, Bianco prepared to launch the submarine. While lowering it down with a crane, the vessel tipped sideways and became stuck in the mud. Bianco tried to recover the vessel, but was unable to raise sufficient funds for the effort. However, one source[4] claims that the vessel was eventually unstuck and was sailed up and down the bay before sinking at its mooring in the bay.[5] Another story explains that the launch failure was due to the crane operator's disregarding the builder's directions; since only partial ballast had been placed inside the submarine (to save money), it was unstable, and thus was to be held in position by the crane while the ballast would be properly repositioned. Placing it completely into the water, the unstable craft rolled onto its side. This story states that "Bianco later refilled the ballast and tethered the sub, but his backers' enthusiasm waned, and he could never return to the project. Eventually some of the sub's parts were stolen, and it got loose from its moorings in 1981."[2]

Thank you so much. I really appreciate you watching and commenting. I'm happy you enjoy them!
Great video! I was raised within walking distance of the creek. A couple of suggestions; Some historical data would be interesting. Coney Island creek did at one point connect with Sheepshead bay thus making Coney Island an actual island. The creek was filled in along the route where the Belt parkway currently runs. Also, for those who reside outside the area, an overview of a map. or nautical chart that depicts your travel route would be helpful and interesting.
Pinned your comment for the added history. Thank you. I'm better at exploring and adventuring than being a historian but I'm improving. Lol.
I'm originally from Carnise and stayed with my grandmother-Brighton 4th-the building that's up against the boardwalk-while attending SVA. I didn't realize the creek once ran to Sheepshead Bay. I Love NY/American history!...I also thought that it would be cool if he showed us his route.

That fence wasn't on the side of the subway bridge when I retired in 2015. I'm puzzled why it was put there. There are a bunch of old train radios in the water next to the bridges where the subway runs. I used to park in Coney Island Yard, and my day ended at Stillwell Avenue terminal. I used to walk the tracks across the creek and into the yard in the middle of the night. Certain times of the year there were things that looked like shrimp swimming near the surface in such great numbers that the water looked like it was boiling. I have seen nice sized blue fish in the creek as well, probably chasing baitfish. The creek used to smell awful down near where it ends, but some years ago they cleaned it out so it is not as bad. It was nice to watch your video. I left Brooklyn after living there for 60+ years. I miss salt water. I'm south of Niagara Falls now in a small town. The 'driver' of subway trains is called a motorman, or more recently a Train Operator. The Conductor is in the middle of the train, he opens and closes the train doors and makes announcements.

You should try Jamaica Bay it's a Oasis in the city nature reserve very shallow
My Brooklyn video goes through Jamaica Bay.
Just found you. From Staten Island always wanted to do what you're doing being that I love on a island water everwhere. Safe travels.
Thank you for watching.
Thank you for doing the Coney Island creek. I live in Coney Island and always wanted to see from the creek level. To bad you didn’t get past the D, N train tracks, there’s a big field to the left where a lot of birds and swans lay eggs. The creek ends at Shell road and really stinks over there at low tide. The end does have a lot of fish in it loaded with small fry and fluke.
I hoped to make it to Shell Road. I didn't like that 2nd spot unter the train bridge. 😕
Hay there is the Coney Island Creek Fresh water or is it Salt water
Salt water.
This was so cool, Matt. Thanks for taking us along! PS The small geese are called Brants.
Thank you for teaching me something! Looked it up. So awesome.
Congrats on the TH-cam thing. The way you blew through those 2 chili dogs shoulda made 3 or 4!
That's called editing but I could have had 3 or 4. 🤣😂
Love this! You take excellent advantage of kayaks' ability to go where few other boats dare. Speaking of dares, how about the Fresh Kills Ship Graveyard? ;)
I def want to check that out!! Thank you for watching, commenting and making that suggestion.
Taking a train over Coney Island Creek while in John Dewey high school In the mid 1970's students nickname the creek "Perfume Creek" due to its Putrid smell of rotten eggs. A nice video of you exploring Brooklyn's waterways
@jarniotes Thank you. I've heard that nickname in the comments previously. So funny. Thank you for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.
I think those small geese are called "brant" - they are kinda neat to watch etc... Like your videos...
Thank you!
Would have been awesome to see some metal detecting Along the beach after lunch, see if you find any cool things. And have you ever found anything scary or horrific on one of your kayaking trips, like say something dead floating in the water?
No, I haven't. I don't own a metal detector, but I'd like to get a magnet for some occasional magnet fishing. Thanks for watching and commenting.
