Sadly, Martha and many other MOTOWN groups were ripped off by the record companies. But, damn, Martha sure could sing. What a powerful voice.

There wasn't hardly any "groups" it was mainly individuals supported by The Funk Brothers. The Funk Brothers are the sound of Motown. Unfortunately hardly anyone is aware of their contribution to popular music. Fucking geniuses. And you say Motown groups were ripped off. These poor dudes turned up for work in 1972 to see a sign saying "no work today". Motown had fucked off to LA. Over, just like that.
      Live forever Motown!!!!

I so wish our young singers today could learn to sing in harmony with multiple backup singers like these ladies. This is the way its supposed to sound like, I mean these ladies make today's singers look foolish and amateur. 70% of the music today would not have been good enough to play on the radio back then, musicians and composers were simply more sentimental and creative. Even their clapping and their "go ahead girl" is so incredibly cool. I just played this video like 20 times in a row.

I met the women on the far left while doing workat her home in Detroit a few months ago and I knew she was something big because she had all this memorabilia in a room and pics of the three of them with Marvin Gaye. It made her day that such a young person knew who she was. I didn't know until I saw all the pics but it's all the same. These guys were huge.

Lucky you. These black artists from Detroit were some of the very greatest social revolutionaries in the history of the USA. They changed our country and also the world- just by being themselves and telling the world it is to be a real authentic human being, and that deep down, were all the same. Growing up I was from the white suburbs of Detroit, but my soul was formed by the Detroit's black ghettos. And I think that is true of everyone from my generation. Amazing, profound music from the soul of humanity.

I have to reply to your 4-year-old point! I have thought the same, and the #1 energetic song I heard from the early '60s, with only The Beatles' "She Loves You" and "Light My Fire" by The Doors (July 1967) having that same intense level of excitement and energy! Those three songs are tops in how they transmitted the desire for love in one's life, and the centerpiece of the entire.reason for Rock 'n' Roll! Another one, only slightly less exciting for me in hearing all the great Top 40 songs then was "Surf City" (June 1963) by Jan and Dean.

Oh, this always got everybody up and out on the dance floor. People loved dancing to this. When the Vandellas turn sideways facing Martha, put their left hand on their hips and start pointing at Martha, "Go ahead girl. Ain't nothin' but love, girl..." I just love it. I grew up around a lot of older black women and that's the way they would scold you, one hand on their hip while they pointed their finger for emphasis. I always found it endearing.

Go ahead girl yeah yeah! sing it ladies. This song and probably "My Girl" by the Temptations personifies the greatness of the Motown vibe perfectly.
Even though they weren't there long the writing/production team of Holland-Dozier-Holland left an incredible legacy of music in the 60's at Motown. This was obviously one of their very best recordings.

Out of Motown's three main girl groups during the early 1960's, "The Supremes" were sweet and sophisicated, "The Marvelettes" were playful and flirty but "The Vandellas" had sass and attitude.
It's clear from Martha Reeves soulful voice that she could throw it down. She puts the *heat* in "Heatwave" and delivered a terrfic lead vocal performance that just makes you want to sing along with her and dance!
