Speaking as someone who grew up and lived on Maui for 25 years, I can attest that, at least in capturing the essence of daily life in Hawaii…..the dress, the casual nature, the house decorations, the goat in the front yard, the yard plants, the opening of the neighbor’s door and simply walking in as if it’s your own home, the general laid back vibe of local and island culture…..they absolutely nailed it. Sid, especially, was an accurate casting….he reminds me of more than a few local kids at my high school.
It is a surprisingly accurate representation of what life in the islands actually feels like. Whenever I’m asked what living in Hawaii is like I always refer to this film, as while there are nitpicks here and there, for the most part it gives a very good general gist. The only notable thing I would say is the local slang and pidgeon has been largely toned down, but that’s understandable in consideration of accommodating a broader audience who would be left clueless. But otherwise, you can tell they had a local advisor in their employ, and not someone who was operating on what they assumed living there was like, but who actually did.
All true ... but the overuse of the Hawaiian music ... (Clooney running down the street, etc, ... RUINED the movie!!!

The woman who wrote the book is born and raised.
Subtitles for the native dialect would’ve sufficed.
@@Sophty85 I haven't watched the movie so I'm not sure how much it suffered the lack, but slang/pidgin can be a little hard to subtitle, depending on context. It did catch a lot of flak for being historically inaccurate - between major businesses & the US gov't, the Hawaiian royal families had their land yoinked out from under them pretty comprehensively, back in the day.

At one hour and fifty-one minutes, the movie shows beautiful bright sun rays coming through the gray clouds.
That is exactly what I saw several times over the next few months after my beautiful young wife passed away in 1995.
Whenver i want to feel peace in life, i watch this movie alone.
True... almost all Alexander Payne's movie have same thing... whether Nebraska, Sideways or About Schmidt..brings a kind of Sweet yet Sad feeling...teach us to celebrate simple joys of day to day life and much more which are beyond description...you gotta watch his movies to feel this kind of emotion

Not everything you know is underrated
This movie was far more depressing than I expected. The trailer makes it look somewhat lighthearted and funny but I found it very sad. It's been a while since I watched it but I haven't been able to make myself watch it again so maybe I would have a different opinion now. The backdrop for the film was fantastically beautiful, of course!

I love this movie. It’s so crazy, but you just go along. When I first saw this, I couldn’t relate to why they were sad, yet angry at her. But now, I lost someone a while back now and at first, I was glad they died. They were awful to me, but then, they were very caring to others. It was complicated and still is. I’m glad they can’t cause any pain to me, but I’m also sad that they can’t care for others anymore. Death is complicated, but death is still death.

It actually showed places in Hawaii that exist. Not just a hotel every tourist goes to (looking at you Sarah Marshall).
It is Drama and Comedy at the same time.

This movie has such advanced humor for 2011 it’s kinda unbelievable
This film was planned weeks before to be shown on Dutch TV (NET5) on Saturday 12th of August 2023, while the Maui fires came on 8th of August 2023. The selling of (family)land is a huge connection between the film and the aftermath of the fires.
Watched it today. Cried. So achingly beautiful.

I spent a week before New Years visiting in Hawaii with my b.f. who was living there for a few months surfing. Mostly, I spent my days w/ neighbors black Labrador on the beach. He was always busy w/his friends so I just minded myself. On New Years eve he invited me to a island party but said " I don't think you'd like it" so I said cool I'll stay here with "Blacky" my new found dog friend. After this trip I realized if you have bad instincts in a relationship, JUST RUN. If they are incapable of feelings, that will never never change. I PLEDGE MY ALLEGIANCE TO ALL ANIMALS whom have loved me for who I am, a really nice cool person who by the way can surf.
Oh by the way it helps when his friend tells me that I'm great and beautiful and he is an asshole.... just saying on New Year's day.

I liked it that was a good very relaxing kinda movie...Clooney and rest of the Hollywood crowd should just do entertainment and give people good times not involve with politics at least not in a hardcore way

Sooo I'm a great great great + grandson of King Kamehameha and a friend who although sometimes is a sweetheart suggested this movie for me and in turn other people who have native blood ...I can't even pretend to imagine of having a dream about remotely even not being filled with ire and wanting to bury the very idea of any and all pac islanders seeing yet another one of these things

I really appreciate the trailer for telling me at least 75% of the movie and I can just warp the ending and no longer have to watch it.
From the cover I always thought the film was like The Beach or Swept Away. When I later read a plot synopsis I learned it was actually a drama about the inheritance of an estate, like Downton Abbey or something. Now I've seen the trailer I'm again baffled and still none the wiser.

Some can be a very good guy but not a husband or a father. He was a busy man and hardly have time for his wife and kids. Like his father-in-law said she got a good woman but he never spoils her when he has the capacity to do so. He never does what every good husband do. He did not object and did not tell about the affair to protect his wife coz he realized he is somehow to blame, he just never saw it coming.
