....oh, this Band has SO much Trivia, I'm gonna need an ENCYCLOPEDIA! ...ha-HAA!! ..I'll TRY to keep it short... ***WHISPERS TRIVIA TIME!!*** ..let's 'go on...', to iiiittt.... (cont.) - ...This is one of THE most important Soul tunes of all-time...ALL-TIME!! ...It was the FIRST BIG Soul tune of the 1980's, and, it kick-started the "post-Disco" era, where Groove & Funk were pushed forward, and the "Boogie-Oogie" mindset was left behind...It ALSO started the 'barbecue" generation, where Black people wanted to have cookouts, and certain Songs were played for the WHOLE Family to enjoy....It REMAINS one the top 'Cookout' tracks of all time... - "ATBGO" was produced by Leon Sylvers (Shalamar), for the Whispers' 11th(!!) Album..they were ALREADY Soul legends by then, and have STILL been together, since 1963!! (they've lost 3 members, due to passings, tho...RIP) - ...As EVERYONE knows, Will Smith sampled it famously, in his 1998 smash, "Miami"; and it's been sampled RELIGIOUSLY....They had a HUGE 'comeback' Top 10 Pop record (although they NEVER went away), in 1987, with LaFace's "Rock Steady"......both tunes are their ONLY #1's, on the R&B charts...
This #1 classic jam was produced by the great Leon Sylvers who produced Shalamar and many other great artists including his family group the Sylvers. The Whispers also worked with LA Ried & Babyface as well; they produced their hit Rock Steady.
I remember this coming out in 7th grade a lot of older people couldn’t believe this was the Whispers because they had reinvented themselves. Leon Sylvers gave them a whole new sound🎶
1979 Radio bop - crossover hit that even got heavy air play on bubble gum pop music stations. Classic late 70s soul w an early 70s vibe (1970-1974 was the golden age of soul music - the peak). This 1979 bop gave 1973 vibes - which is the biggest compliment ever. Bros who grew up sangin' on the corner (1955 thru the 1960s) gave us an era of music that will nvr be surpassed. Luv & honor to the giants of the past.
I've always felt The Whispers never received enough accolades, considering the band was formed in the early '60s and has withstood several iterations. A couple of '80s fire bops of theirs worthy of a listen are It's A Love Thing ('81) and Rock Steady ('87). Great reaction Empress -- this one is a perfect example of why you need a wireless headset so that we can see you get out of that dang chair when you groove, your moves deserve being viewed from the toes up. 💃🕺🤩
You go, gurl, wit dem moves tho!!! When this sh*t came out, there was no song on the airwaves that could compare to it -- A mega hit on R&B and pop stations, alike!!! Yes, I also love that the song seamlessly weaves elements of Disco, R&B, Pop and even Hip-Hop! You can't help but move and groove to this gem!😆
It's double excitement for me! Enjoy this awesome song and watching you groove to it! 😁🎼🎵🎶🎵 I was nine years old when this song came out and did a dance called the freak in 1979! 😁
I remember this song being a big hit in 1980. That was a great year for music, where disco was in decline in popularity but R&B had advanced into wonderful songs. Other examples: "Stomp" (Brothers Johnson); "Upside Down" (Diana Ross); "Celebration" (Kool & the Gang); "Feelin Free" (Jermaine Jackson).
I was smiling the whole way through that! Lol Love that tune. As you probably guessed, ....it was a massive HIT! And you were right Empress, about the hip hop influence. It's been sampled quite a few times!
Empress you need to check out more Whispers. Iconic 80s R&B. Can't miss Whispers: "Keep on Lovin Me", "It's a Love Thing", "In the Raw" and "Rock Steady".
One of my favorite songs when I was younger still listen to it all the time, the intro keyboard part always reminds me of Madonna , Get into the groove when you say baa baa that's the money making part of the song is what I'm talking about lol thanks Empress for reacting to this great song! BTW they have another great song that's more popular called Rock Steady!
Great 70s R&B classic that immediately makes me think of my father who loves all the old school soul groups and also makes me think of the Will Smith song “Miami” which samples this song… “bienvenidos a Miami” 😊
"Whosever decision it was to include that "bamrmm bamrmm" that was the money making sound of the song" - Empress. 100%! You said it better than I could, cuz the whole time I was watching this, I was like, how am I gonna describe to her my favorite part of the song?! And then you did! I remember hearing this in middle school circa 1993-1995 in the suburbs of NYC. Our school bus played the local R&B/Hip Hop Station, but they'd occasionally throw in a throwback, and this was their FAVORITE. I heard this weekly, like almost 15 years after it was a hit. Still love it!
There was nothing quite like the SOLAR sound. Try the Scott twins and The Whispers doing "Rock Steady", "It's A Love Thing", and "I Can Make It Better For You". Produced by Leon Sylvers who also produced Dynasty (Love In The Fast Lane and I've Just Begun To Love You), The Sylvers (Boogie Fever), and Leon Sylvers the 3rd (Misdemeanor). That funky bass line is Leon himself. Whenever you hear a SOLAR song and the bass line is funky, that's Leon.
I've watched the Unsung episode about The Whispers. What was said is true, they were never appreciated by the Grammys or the Soul Train Awards. It's black people that kept supporting them. Kept them going strong. I'll never figure out why The Whispers still haven't won a Grammy or a Soul Train Award.
Whispers are one of the greatest r&b groups ,many billboard #1 hits. The group lead vocalist are identical twin brothers.

Classic club song. We rocked to this big time.

The writer of the song and the one playing bass is none other than Leon Sylers
Keep on loving me is the classic jam and in the mood is a quiet storm jam
Just from the look of this video you can see where Bruno Mars and Soul Sonic may have gotten some of their inspiration from❤️❤️
💯
LOOOOVE this song! 🥰😍 And their dance moves were stellar! Thank you for keeping great music alive! Hugs, from Mesa, AZ 🌵
Yeah!

Another epic Bassline from Leon Sylvers iii. Also responsible for Shalamar
