Your videos are still informative some 6 years later. I just bought a Rose Medallion cup and saucer with CHINA stamped on the bottom. Now I know the year! Great.

Nice video that answered some questions that I had regarding an 11” dia. bowl that I inherited some years ago that has no stamp on the bottom. I now have an idea as to it’s age. Thanks again for posting.

i found a couple plates that look like rose but the marking looks different from the ones you showed..its a circle marking that says ‘Japanese Porcelain’ around the outside circle and ‘Decorated in Hong Kong’ on the inner circle and finally inside a diamond shape says ‘acf’... is this anything? thanks in advance for all your info and help!☺️

What about made in hong kong? I have two stamped like that with with images that look like 1920s in your reference photo. I would assume its modern concidering you said modern peices have a variety of different marking. But figured it would be worth asking. Thanksd

The earlier pieces were made in Jiadzhing and exported from the port of Canton. Pieces marked decorated in Hong Kong are from the 2nd half of the 20th C or newer.

    Hi
Thank you for the video, bit I've got a question. I've got a plate with a "da qing" (during the reign of emperor qianlong) stamp on the bottom, but you said they're most likely modern, so it's unlikely that it was made before the 1950's? Or could it still be authentic? (Btw, the plate has goldleaf on it)
    Thank you.

Use of a reign mark was forbidden to be used on export porcelain.

@@oltedders so how would you explain a piece with a reign mark that is in the US.

      @m.a.jensen2415
Do you have an actual example of what you're talking about? Authentication isn't that difficult for most 19th century pieces.
Certain concessions were made for using the reign mark after 1863, but actual examples from that period are extremely rare. The majority of porcelain remained unmarked until 1891, when the country of origin was required on all imported items. "CHINA" written in English appears on everything after that. Reproductions of older styles made in Hong Kong during the mid 20th century generally are marked with a spurious Chien Lung reign mark. Those were readily available worldwide. Mainland China is churning out fakes by the ton now. eBay is full of them. Genuine marked antiques were brought out of China when the Imperial lineage ended in 1908, so there are genuinely old pieces available.

I have a 14" Rose Medallion Vase signed: Andrea in an Oval then under that is: Japanese Porcelain Ware Hand Decorated in Hong Kong. Absolutely beautiful in great shape. Any idea the age and what it would be worth. I'm assuming it's Andrea Sadek??? Thanks so much for any information you can provide.

I have a 26cm rose medallion from Macau with round red stamp on it. Paintwork looks like 1920s...I understand the Macau did not actually have factories and all the plates were exported through Macau. I bought it for 1€

I have a 10" rose medallion plate with a red quianlong mark. The detailed outline & coloring is very carefully done. What seems unusual is the painting design continues right onto the plate rim without a separate defined gold or brown painted rim. Also the opposing panels are mirror images of one another (not just the same image around the other side). Any ideas?

    • @oltedders

Any RM with a red seal mark on it is modern, an usually hand decorated, not hand painted.

Nice video! Thanks for posting. I have a rose medallion plate which is mostly typical with birds and butterflies but also includes pink green bats and small red vases (with gold decoration) around the plate. I have not been able to find another example where the same was true. Have you seen any examples or are you familiar with those design elements?

Thank you for the comment and kind words. An exorbitant amount of Famille Rose porcelains were made in China during the second half of the 19th century, and with that came hundreds of pattern variations. Sounds like you have a lovely example. Feel free to email us a photo and will let you know our thoughts. All the best.

The so-called 1860 example is definitely NOT 1860. About 25 years later than what he dates it. The earliest reference to the rebuilding of the kilns in China is 1863. RM from that period would have melon shaped reserves, not the typical C scroll reserve. Overly ambitious early dating of RM has plagued the post WWII collecting community for decades.
