      I ride bikes from 50-80s, from Czechoslovakia and it has no ABS.. It has only drum brakes and its two stroke... I got my motorcycle license for year now (I did it at 16) so Im still beginner and I have no problem withou abs, but in driving school Ive riden Honda 125 CBF and it was fun and whole new world to me... But I rather be on my 70s little two stroke :)

      I used to genuinely believe that good old fashioned pulse braking was better than ABS, then I tried both at the same time and stopped so quick I barely had time to put my feet down. Sure ABS sucks on ice, but then ice is always going to be tricky on a bike.

      @@davidbesant The issue is not all bikes have the ABS calibrated the same. I have several bikes, only one has ABS. It is set at a very intrusive level where routine stops with a small bump become eye opening experiences. Its not even on the radar on the non ABS bikes that I have taking the same route. You may be lucky and have a nicely calibrated bike or you are testing it where traction is off the chart bad, then of course ABS is better. Mine is calibrated bad enough that I am seriously considering bypassing the system with some direct brake lines and this is a bike with Brembo M50's, It really should be much better than it is..

    A panic stop is not controllable. ABS has saved many rider lives worldwide. When you're truly surprised by an imminent danger, you'll grab a handful of brake, lock-up and fall. Period.

      That is why, if you dont have an ABS bike, you simpley dont put yourself in that situation. Have plenty of space to break...dont speed, common sense.

      You don't understand. A dog or deer or some kid jumping in front of you can't be planned for. ABS can keep you upright when you stop hard enough to lift the rear wheel and weren't planning for that stoppie.

      The key is to never panic in the first place.
      Of course ABS is great(maybe....never have a bike with ABS) but it cannot replace training and experience.

    Everybody here said if you know how to brake you dont really need ABS well maybe riding during rainy and someone cut front of you I want see how many valentino rossi they can immediately stop the bike without losing the front end its not that easy in emergency brake........so ABS can save your life!!!!

      In the last 40 years of using the bike as my primary transport (for most of that my only transport), and working as a courier for 3 years, that hasn't happened, but I'm assured by many that I'm going to panic and fall off. Still waiting.

    I've ridden drum/disk bikes with no abs off and on road the key to not locking the wheel is simply understanding the bikes breaking ability. It's not really that difficult to get used to imo

Nah I learned on a drum and am guilty of locking the rear, drum brakes are also extremely inconsistent bike to bike (quality of brake shoes and how tightened the brake is and also tyre pressure) they also have a habit of becoming stiffer during rain. They are very prone to low sides.
      The key component is understanding the bike you're operating, sports, dirt or classics you have to adapt to what you're operating and know the limitations of said motorcycle and become accustomed to it gradually.

      Abs is very, very useful in certain condition, but considering i live in asia which mean i'm not always get to ride big cubication bike (and also traffic jam lol) i didn't see the very need of abs. The key is maintain your awareness on the road and know when it's good to speeding

      It would have been fine, and still stopped quicker, because the rider wouldn't have clamped the brakes on full and held them there for the demo.

    I've been riding for 30+ years. Dirt and Street. I've riden everything from dirt bikes, crusiers to track day race bikes. I'm on the first bike I've ever owned with ABS (2020 GSXR-1000) and I find myself asking, "where have these brakes been all my life?" YES! Develop the skills you need to brake and brake hard but it's never a bad thing to have the backup in case you need it.

    I had a pretty minor crash in 2010 on a bike without ABS. Broke my elbow and got some road rash on my body. ABS definitely would have kept me upright and more in control, so any bike I own now will definitely have ABS! Thanks for showing its effectiveness.

    I truly believe in ABS System, but you don't need to put more sand on the TURNED OFF ABS example to demostrate it. Just make a fair test, anyway ABS TURNED ON is better.

    Anyone that's ever been in an accident/crash or near miss knows they never intended to get into that accident/crash when they chose to ride out that day. ABS will definitely help for those situations.

      ​@@Near-22 ABS was first developed for airplanes and later applied to cars. These days it comes with every new car, in Quebec it's even illegal not to have one (unless it's broken or you have an old car without it). It's probably going to be the same for the motorcycle in a few year, it's safer in an emergency and the only useful case where it should be out of racing or in motocross. So on the road it's always better to have ABS

    currently don’t have ABS on my Ducati but I’m definitely pro ABS as it’s saved my life in a sudden maneuver. Yes, practicing can make you skilled to learn to stop quickly but when it comes down to life or death needing to react, those wheels will lock up if you weren’t ready.

      ABS? It's a waste of money and overly reliant on complicated technology, as this video clearly shows. All you need is two giant outriggers, one either side of the motorcycle. Added bonus, you can keep your feet up at traffic lights, you don't need a side stand.

    Ride a bike with ABS, but ride as if you don't have it.
    Never start to depend on technology, it will make you complacent.
    If you have ABS, make sure it is serviced properly.
    And never ever forget the Golden Rule - always drive such that you can stop safely within the distance you can see to be clear.

      I had a ninja 400 that would freakin slide violently if it hit a patch of gravel. I transitioned to a 2022 hayabusa and can ride MUCH more aggressively and feel safer than i ever did

    ABS saved my life once. My bike was pushed out into the edge of the road/ditch where there was tons of gravel and dirt by a grandma not checking her mirrors as she pulled out right in front of me. The Combined-ABS system on my Honda CBR600RR kept the bike upright, controlled, and I managed to stop before I smacked into the rear side of her car. The situation came out of nowhere, and if I even spent half a second to do a "controlled braking" I would have smacked into the rear of the car. This situation happened at around 80-90 mph. Do you want to do a controlled braking? of course. But sometimes you will not have the time or ability to do so before it's too late. Your skills does NOT control other unskilled drivers.

    Ive had my front wheel lock up once. Needless to say I found myself gone from vertical to horizontal in like 0,5 seconds. Ever since ive always been pulling on that front brake lever nice and carefully.

    Choose ABS over non-ABS. I learned the hard way on how important it is to ride a bike with ABS. I was going about 40 miles per hour and the traffic light abruptly turned red. I pressed on the brakes and suddenly I found myself skidding on the road. I got a fractured foot and some road rashes on my left hand as a result of this. I am not sure what caused my wheels to skid really badly, either it was sand or oil on the road, but if my bike had an ABS this wouldn't have happened. Just get ABS. You will be forever grateful when it is needed the most.

    A tire length longer braking distance with ABS and remaining rubber down and not potentially highsiding/lowsiding in to oblivion ill take it! Such a great piece of engineering. Wonder when airbag vests will become more mainstream. Coming really close to buying one.

    I'm just a cyclopathic bike rider who happened to run onto the sort of fine rocks \ pebble surface on an asphalt road like the one you see on the video. An unfamiliar road bike with carbon chassis,... meant for speed, not for break, going downhill on a mountain with extra short brake run that went from zero to hero in what seemed to just a millimeter. -> Almost 60 days later I was still swapping bandages with a hole on my left side, at that was just 40 kph. No broken bones, but neither any skin left on my body.

    I've seen this style of testing before . It was with an Italian bike company back in 1979 . The ABS did work but it always took a greater distance to stop . Even if only a yard or two . The non ABS bike was driven by an experienced motorcycle racer , clearly the man had a lot of experience he really knew how to pound the brakes down . The average rider would not have been able to do what he had done .

      In 79 computers when infinitely slower than today. You can't be faster than a computer. Even computers can't calculate how to hard to brake in order to not lock the wheel. Locking and releasing dozens of times per second is the most effective they can do, something humans just can't.

      @@juliansoto2651 That works only on dry tarmac. And even on it maximum grip you get at 30% wheel slip. And even at full lock you have about 70% of max grip, while ABS usually brakes only 50% of time.
      But that on tarmac. On sand or snow full lock is much more efficient than any ABS, because you need to scratch it off to reach the tarmac, and not to roll over its surface.

      As I see here, this experienced driver just locks the wheel and falls. He don't even try to keep bike stable. Also the conditions are not realistic, nobody will ride by such a tin track of sand where you can't steer. Look at bikes riding in real send, e.g. in Dackar, they don't fall on every breaking, even they lock the wheels.

    What I learned from this video,
    With abs: you will occasionally under specific circumstances have a longer brake distance than someone who is an expert on riding
    Without abs: if you want to do this emergency stop you need training wheels to stop you from falling over.
    I know which I want...

      That's why EU made it mandatory for all cars to come standard with ABS and ESP, because not all situations are ideal(good weather, good pilot, proper tires, etc) like the people in the comments talk about.

    ABS works and is a great thing to have. I’d like to point out that I owned a 1986 BMW K100RS and a 2003 K1200RS, both with ABS. While it worked great, the system was so complicated even dealers didn’t want to bleed the brakes and they were to be bled yearly. When you could find someone to service it, it took hours and was expensive. I’m guessing, and hoping, that ABS systems today are far less complicated.

      I have a 2015 BMW S1000XR which uses the ABS evolved from the K1200s, the ABS on the K1200s had massive issues including loss of all braking in the event of ABS pump failure, by comparison the XR is a doddle, 3 calipers to bleed as normal, then with a 100 quid diagnostic device you can run through a quick ABS bleed sequence taking less than 10 minutes. Or you can have a dealer do the whole lot for you for 50 quid tops. And this is on a bike with the most advanced ABS system you'll see on a bike, stoppie prevention, lean angle sensitive ABS that doesn't stand you up and off the road, and linked brakes. I've tried and on an average dry road at 30mph it's impossible to even make the tyres chirp.

    ABS is especially good for smaller road bikes, learner bikes because they often have smaller wheels. That means less grip. Learners are more likely to panic brake and ABS (if it works) will help dial back rider error, but only to a degree. It's not a miracle worker though, and if you turn hard while braking hard it won't keep the bike under control

    I’ve actually hit a sand patch on a back round, car pulled out in front of me. Bike I was riding had no abs.
    I didn’t lay it down.
    The key is in the technique of braking.
    Everyone should learn how to break without abs. Same technically can be used on a bike with abs.

      Let’s be honest, you are in the minority here. Sure an experienced (cautious/defensive) rider should be able to ride without the need for ABS but it’s always useful for the « what if » situation, where it can be the difference between life and death, so if you can, choose a motorcycle with ABS.

      @@vissla8084 yes that is the technique your looking for and that will give you your best stopping distance. I have a bike with abs , your not looking to engage abs but should the front break traction you'll be glad you had abs equipped motorcycle

      They're plastic sliders, with almost no friction. It stopped quicker because it cut through the loose stuff to the hard base. Which is why you turn off ABS on the dirt.

      @@gasdive The bike not using ABS stopped a bit shorter but lurched to the side the instant the front wheel locked up. Without the safety struts that bike would have been on it's side, sliding passed the other on it's paint and panels!

      @@glynhannaford7332 it was a "test" designed to show exactly that. In reality the rider wouldn't just clamp down hard on the front and let it slide out. However they would be able to brake hard enough to cut through the loose sand and grip the hard road below.

    You should always ride like you don't need ABS. That said: it's a lifesafer. It's crazy how hard you can brake in case of an emergency without crashing.

    I've been riding street bikes since 1982. I won't ever ride one without ABS again. It's the most important safety innovation since the helmet, and it's saved my bacon a number of times.

    I'm using my first non abs bike for 15 years now. I've fell only 3 times on slippery curvy asphalt road with this bike. Thanks god im still alive. Now im thinking about getting a new bike soon with ABS. With extra cost its worth your safety and live, guys.

    When I first learned to ride, I was taught that only using the front brake could cause the rear wheel to push against the front wheel that is slowing down, making it more likely to wash. I think they said you should brake 70% front, 30% rear. Additionally, by using both brakes you are utilising 2 tyres worth of traction. I've always followed this training. I ride big sports bikes on road and track days. It always surprises me how many people I meet who NEVER use the rear brake. I've never had ABS on a bike, I'm sure it helps, but if you ride without it, 70-30 has always worked well for me.

      I hv always used 80% rear break and 20%front break... In delhi city busy
      And my bullet doing good in breaking except gets slow or delayed breaking by this method.
      Unlike what you said here to use 70%front and 30% rear break...
      Will follow your advise nowonward

      On retro bikes like bullets, you should use 50-50 or even 60 - 40 in favour of back brakes. Here he is talking about sports bikes.

      ABS by itself has close to zero overall negative effect on fatal crashes. It has shown to reduce injury in non-fatal crashes by around 6%. ABS is also over-involved in run-off-the-road fatal accidents. If you add up all the figures, ABS causes more deaths than lives it saves.

    ABS on a bike has some benefits but it can also be a crutch. Good for beginners, but also learning that controlled progressive pressure on the brake lever is a critical skill to know.

      ABS is a safety net. Its not replacement for skill. Its meant to catch a rider if they mess up. Its not meant to replace proper braking technique.

      Controlled breaking helps you to the point when the tires block. It's only then that the ABS kicks in. You can perfectly learn how to break good on an ABS bike.

      @@TheOcco99 I agree abs is great but ABS systems differ a lot. I had some systems where the ABS kicked in way sooner than needed and was not as fancy as it is on the newer better stuff. I'm not anti abs but I do have friends who do stoppies on accident when they get onto a non abs bike

      Yeah I forgot to do that once, went down at around 70mph.
      Even though, I think I'd rather not have the ABS. Maybe on newer bikes the system is a whole lot better, but you can slow down much quicker without the ABS.

    bikes with abs are great, to me that's not even an argument but the thing that always comes into mind when i see videos like this is the safety for today's abs riders when they get on non-abs bikes

      Thought the same. I learned to ride without ABS and every bike i owned came without it. The bike in driving school had it and it's fantastic for emergency situations and bad road conditions. I had some emergency stops over the years even with a locked up front wheel but if you learn to ride without ABS you'll learn how to brake without it. If you feel the wheel locking up in a straight line you have to release the brake and push it again. Sounds a lot easier than it is but riding the same bike for a long time gets you enough time to really learn how to handle it. Braking while turning is another thing but hey, riding is dangerous as it is so i might just enjoy the amazing old bike i have.

      why u need brake at all , if you are skilled stop the bike gradually slowing down without accelerating or with low gears. after all brakes are safety feature like ABS. makes any sense to you? ABS is must, in emergency only ABS can save you. It doesn't matter how experienced you are in emergency all we tend to do is slam the brakes.
      I suggest you to watch how ABS is able to stop without locking the wheels and compare it with your skill in an emergency scenario.

      ABS is just added safety features,If it's available It's great if it isn't just work on your Braking skills.
      And You said In emergency situation, You just slam the brakes but that's completely wrong.
      It's not just slamming the brakes, It's also about putting Right pressure on both Hand brakes and Leg break.
      And There's further training and that is the training of presence of Mind,even with ABS if your presence of mind isn't good,it can cause accidents.
      I have seen People with modern super bikes causing accidents and they have ABS.
      Yeah ABS is better than normal brakes but right now I don't have it so I'll have to adjust
      Many people say that automatic transmission is better because you can drive freely even in traffic but people are driving manual transmission in traffic for decades and they got no problem.

      @@TheFiretiger20 I have had many emergency situations and you are wrong, if you know how to ride and brake you wont lock up your brakes in emergency situation, only newbies do that. I can guarantee you that i would stop quicker on a bike without abs than you on a bike with abs, it might keep you from falling down but abs will actually increase your braking distance, ofc this is from experienced point of view, if you are just going to lock up your wheels like your brakes are on/off switch then abs will stop you quicker. I tested this on polygon with two identical bikes, one with and one without abs, im always able to stop quicker without abs.

    Abs is a good feature under certain circumstances, but is no substitute for good braking discipline. Its great for panic breaking. Not so great for hard driving where wheel slippage is part of steering.

    ABS is smart braking tech. Its also how you brake. Panic breaking will make you slam the breaks. You have to roll off the throttle and progressively brake

    As what ive seen in this video you can clearly see that the sand is more on the non abs side than the abs side. In a couple of takes if you read the non abs riders body, he expects to fall down thats why his body is reacting to it in a different way. I dont know whats on the head of the non abs rider but i have a partial conclusion that he leans the motorcycle side ways unconsciously do to him expecting to fall.

    My wife I came up over a hill in Colorado years ago on my BMW LT, a deer 🦌 ran out in front of us. I slammed on the brakes. Came to a dead upright stop. Had to pull over and put my head between my knees. She did not understand, we stopped and did not hit the deer, she said! What the matter with you? I had been riding all my life at that point and explained to her that since we had ABS we are still alive, if this was a normal bike with normal brakes we would have skidded across the road and probably would be very injured. We were going 50-60mph. My new Triumph Has ABS, I wouldn’t drive a bike without ABS again. Just saying

      Thank-you for the personal story. It really hit home. I have never had abs and have put my bike down locking the front wheel on gravel. Luckily low speed thus no injuries, but disaster happens quick.

    *Warning* If you happen to encounter 6 inch deep sand while riding your favorite street. Full braking the instant you hit the sand will almost always end up in a crash. Keeping the front end light in that situation is your best bet for staying upright. I can't count how many times I've seen guys fall over in dirt parking lots because they grab a fist full of front brake.

    Having the technology is great. One of my bikes is an antique (47 yrs. Old) No ABS, no traction control. I ride it accordingly. Give myself stopping distance. Ride it mellow. If you ever watched ,”Jay Leno’s garage” he talks about this often when he’s riding one of his antique motorcycles. To lessen the odds of a mishap, ride the machine accordingly.

    20 years r8de experience, never locked a front wheel thats had me off , never had a bike with abs , trusted in the bikes standup braking to tell me the limits , wheelied off the back more than once , but never done a stoppie too far , skidded front wheels without loss of control too

    Most of the comments are missing the most important point. Although the non ABS stops more quickly it can be clearly seen that the bike is being kept upright by the stabilisers that are fitted., without which it would be skidding down the road on its side for a considerable distance. The ABS bike is able to brake without spilling it's rider.

    Abs or not, its still the driver. One of my friend rides an ABS CBR and he fell down in the rain because the ABS system makes him nervous and lost control of the steering even tho he had been riding it for a year and half. ABS does help a lot, but if you cant ride it, it wont do nothing. I just wanna say for riders out there, master your bike and keep control of yourself.

      @@michaelradan8022 from what i've seen, its probably because of how he cant turn his bike and it just brakes straight into the curb. But from his pov, he says that the handlebar was shaking a little bit that he pumped the brake and eventually losing control of the steering and then the wet tracks combined with gravels dropped him down. It was a 20km/h crash. Both him and his bike was ok. And yes, that's still the same question i've been asking cuz so far abs for me are controllable and helped a lot. Not even hard to control.

    Reading these comments shows me 1. How many riders don't know how to emergency brake (or have never experienced it) and 2. Don't understand what abs is for. Ride safe folks. A few things to save you life, the front brake is your friend, learn to use it properly, don't lock up the rear wheel, leave your clutch out and let the engine slow the rear, panic/emergency braking is very different than non life threatening hard braking. For instance, in my opinion, the MSF class style of braking will cause you to crash in an emergency.

      The red one has ABS, look How much sand the Black one has spread, thats because the wheel got block.
      Also the weird structure on the black one is there to prevent the Rider to fall when the wheel get block.

    You can see abs bike rider fighting to keep bike up. Non abs bike rider didn't even try.
    Edit: You can also see how there is a significant difference in the amount of gravel between the two sides. The non-abs side looks like there is nearly double the amount of gravel.

      @@weary6118 rear brakes is only important at the first part, in a fraction of a second, most of the weight is transferred to the front and rear brakes become almost useless after that. It's why cars with 4 wheel brakes have electronic brake distribution system or rear brake much less hard than front brakes. Otherwise the rear will lock up after the weight transfer.

    Technically, a great brake modulation done manually can rival ABS. The thing is, you need to be a *really skilled* rider to do that, and even with that skill when you do a panic brake, those skills could easily go out the window. I have about 10 years of experience of riding (no exotic, just a small cc bike) and even I want to have ABS as a backup. After experiencing some near-crash skids, you would have the same thought.

      For most bikes, it's not a backup. It's always on. Dual sports do come with on off abs. That is because, on loose surfaces, abs can get you hurt. Most off road riders don't want abs because they know their bikes capabilities instinctively. Abs forces you to panic brake while it reduces braking force when it anticipates wheel lock up. The problem is wheel lockup can't be anticipated by a system that can't see sand ,gravel or loose dirt/mud. A rider can anticipate, by sight and learned brake feel. Abs can't learn and can't see to anticipate. It WILL keep you from skidding and going down, but it MAY NOT stop you in time to avoid that threatening obstacle you were trying to avoid in the first place. ABS doesnt calculate how much stopping distance you have available.

      But then again, most riders are not off-road riders, so let's talk about road conditions only. For those who know they don't need ABS, choose a bike wth no ABS (may not apply anywhere, but in my country, ABS is not a necessity).       Well, It's there if you panic brake, but if you can anticipate the condition, you can brake and not trigger the ABS.

      Until they can't. Of course a cautious and capable rider is the ideal condition, but conditions on the road are not always ideal. People are not ideal, people make mistakes.

      If you have any data that said a non-ABS bike is safer than one with ABS, please provide us here with that information. Personally, I would like to know.

      @@paceyombex In America, I don't know where your from, the vast majority of the "research" has been done by ABS industry proponents ( the guys that make money off the systems) and U.S. government agencies. The U.S. government has taken the position that it is great for untrained drivers/riders and are "mandating" ABS equipment on vehicles. Personally, I think it's a wonderful "option" for those who want it. I wouldn't mind having it. "If" It can be overriden. But it can't. IN MOST CASES. As soon as you apply enough brake pressure, it activates. You lose potential Stopping power. ABS cannot, more often than not, stop your vehicle in the shortest possible distance. The industry and the government's argument was that ABS was always superior. They have been proven wrong. Now their position is, since most drivers are not professionals, ABS should be required on all vehicles. If you have ever ridden sport bikes, there is nothing worse than losing control of your brakes to a computer that has no clue how fast you need to stop. The fact that Dual Sport riders and moto GP riders WONT use abs, should be enough "evidence" that the system is more fallible than the industry would have you believe.

    For the ppl that say you have to have abs or you'll crash. Ive been riding for years had many situations that required threshold braking. some even momentarily locking the front wheel requiring me to adjust pressure on the lever. I have still only hit the 1 deer (at 65mph) i was trying to avoid and i have never dropped the bike because of it. Including when i hit the deer. That being said yes abs is a great thing and is nice to have but it is no substitute for practice and muscle memory. You do not rise to the occasion you fall to the level of your training.

    Brand new rider (have only worked on very beginner stuff in the driveway), my husband made sure my new bike (Honda Rebel 300) had ABS.

      @@francescocalvanese6235 In moments of stress people usually go to what they know works. If you use progressive braking all the time, then it is more likely you will use progressive braking when startled. I have been riding for over five decades, startled many many times, and have not once slammed on the brakes. A new rider would likely slam on the brakes but, with experience it is much less likely.
      EDIT: I don't bother rev matching or shifting when a deer pops up out of nowhere. I just pull in the clutch and use progressive braking to slow down or stop safely. I pull over change my underwear and continue on my trip. 😂

    Esses braços de apoio seria interessante em caso de acidente evitar da moto cair. Elas ficariam retraidas e em caso de acidente elas acionariam com algum auxílio de giroscópio que detectaria uma mudança brusca de inclinação que caracterizaria um acidente.

      Não funcionaria, ele precisaria de um espaço muito grande pra abrir. alem de ser tipo airbag que se estourar vc compra outro pq nao tem como rearmar.
      O ideal mesmo é o ABS que evita muitos acidentes de parada brusca.
