Lhurgoyf is a creature type that is original to Magic: the Gathering. These strange looking monsters tend to feed off of the contents of the graveyard. In this video, we take a look at Magic's 10 Lhurgoyfs, and rank them based on how they've performed in competitive Magic.

Tarmogoyf is one of those cards that is so efficient at what it does. It is already so roided with stats, it is hard to even truly powercreep as it is unlikely we will ever see a 2-drop with as many raw stats that is so easy to fuel. With so many decks relying on the graveyard for the decks to function, it will never be "bad." Just not always meta.

  • @DiverseCurse

I've played Magnivore in Modern R/B Land Destruction decks. Stone Rain, Molten Rain, and Pillage as well other nice sorceries like Thoughtseize, general burn spells and Angrath's Rampage among other things. It was fun before the advent of insane amounts of extremely efficient removal in Modern. Totally a meme deck that won with sometimes when an opponent simply had no resources nor significant board presence, and was a frankly unfun to play against in some cases.
Here's some matchup analyses to consider and also give you an idea of what timeframe I was playing this in.
**Burn** suffered heavily. The density of land destruction cards made their resources quickly dwindle by turn three. Creatures wouldn't stick around for very long. If I lived until turn three, which was reasonable, I pretty much had the game. I could get caught off guard on rare occasions though.
**Control** had a rough time. Be it Azorius, Jeskai, or Temur, I could still be a problem. It was the days of Path to Exile, and if the control player didn't have it or had it Thoughseized away, Magnivore could swing a few good times before they found another. Counter magic then wasn't what is today, but could still prove to be a probelm. Burn and Discard spells had to carry some extra weight in that match.
**Storm** was a pretty fast deck, but if could consistently keep the enabler off of the board I could manage. They don't run removal spells, so once Magnivore hit the field the clock was ticking. That matchup was still mostly a coin toss. If they stuck an enabler and went off on the same turn, I couldn't do anything.
**Infect** could be rough. I needed that early removal spell. No instants meant that the Infect player never got two-for-one'd by a removal spell since I had to play them on my turn and during my mainphases. I could get there, but I had to get lucky and didn't have many turns to do so.
**Tron** suffered. You know damn well why.
**Death's Shadow** was a weird matchup. We both suffered from the same problems and had very similar strategies. Clear a path for a big creature while denying opponent resources. It became even worse for me when it was Grixis and they had counter magic. However, depriving an opponent of their lands was pretty devastating. I think this matchup favors Grixis Death's Shadow decks, but is a coin toss against Rakdos versions.
**Humans** was a pretty bad matchup for me. I had Anger of the Gods in the sideboard, but that sometimes wasn't enough. They went wide and I would find I couldn't keep up with the creature density. Humans decks can function well on low land counts especially if I didn't have the Pillage or sideboard artifact hate for the Aether Vial which had often already cranked out one or two creatures. It was a bad matchup.

Nethergoyf seems like it's being pulled in two different directions, it seems like it wants to be in a turbo self mill deck, but there are better things you can do for 3 mana than bring it back. At the same time, if you are trying to use it as a resilient threat in a midrange deck you are gatekept by whatever the least frequent cardtype in your deck. Honestly the most interesting part of the card is that you can exile any number of cards from your graveyard when you escape it. Maybe it can help make inverter a playable deck in modern?
