    This is a common argument when people talk about Korra vs. Aang. Aang was about a child facing and overcoming impossible odds (the idea that with hard work, loyalty and love any child can achieve greatness) while Korra is a more realistic look at what happens when a young adult is thrown into the real world (the reality that no matter what training you have, what your name or background is, who you surround yourself with, sometimes you just get folded and have to find the will to stand back up). SHEERA!!! your commentary is spot on about Korra. She was a reckless, headstrong teenager who was thrown into the adult world. Always running into things without thinking. She was out of balance after every single challenge that she went through. Korra’s character arc is that she needed to learn compassion, patience, and empathy. If she didn’t, she wouldn’t have shown Kuvira mercy after all that she has done. She definitely grew into reasoning skills that resembled Aang’s in the end. She stepped up and tried to fill Aang’s shoes as best she could, but she wasn’t prepared for how difficult it would be. Being the Avatar would be a lot easier in theory than in practice. So we see her in season 1 as a brash, overconfident, headstrong girl, and as the show goes on she learns from her mistakes and begins to learn from the people around her and this rounds out her character. It just sucks how Nickelodeon Butchered Korra. S1 was supposed to be it, a 12 episode mini-series, which is why S1 has no fluidity with S2, not to mention the budget dropped in S2 and Nickelodeon changed animation studios for Korra. Then S3 and S4 were promised and then Nickelodeon decided 1. To air S4 on their website only and 2. to cut S4's budget halfway through production all the way down to the amount of money it takes to produce 1 single episode (which is why S4 has that mock episode that is completely recap [and why it has 13 episodes instead of 12 to make up for the mock episode). Then Nickelodeon gave Korra some funds to finish up S4 and we ended up with what we have now.
      It's so sad because what was supposed to be a 12 episode show that could never stand up to The Last Airbender (due to ATLA having 3 seasons that were contracted and supported by Nickelodeon) BUT could still be fulfilling turned into a 4 Season cash grab that Nickelodeon wanted to stamp out. Had they contracted 4 Seasons and supported the show, we could've had something EVEN MORE amazing than ATLA.
      4 Seasons of Fluid Character Development; more impactful romance, better layered/designed villains and general plot. More flushed out characters, better animated fight scenes. No Mock recap episodes. lmaooo Could've been perfection.

      I love Korra more than Aang, only thing I wish they could fix is season 2. If they redid that season with different plot but same outcome it would be so much better. They should’ve never cut her connection to the previous avatars. If they change that, they could add little bits and pieces of Korra talking to the avatars in season 3 and maybe at the end of season 4 since we never got that

    • @prinstyrio0
      @prinstyrio0 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Last Airbender felt complete and really got its full potential, Korra felt like it had so much more to give, which the writers hinted at through Korra in the end and ofcourse everything we know with Nickelodeon screwing up season 1 to 2 cause they didn't know if they got more seasons and then the end where their budget got cut.
      There's also how despite how amazing and grounded Aang's story was, it was ultimately a kids show. The grown up weren't as competent or focused on, it was a kid's power fantasy. Korra while it got some teenage power fantasy, had a lot more realistic tone where there was plenty of grown ups taking the steering wheel and showing the turmoils being so young thrust into so much danger, and then by the end the main cast turning into adults. It felt more real, less a power fantasy and the whole cast felt like real people.
      With Aang's ending you wanted to see the cast grow up, but with Korra's cast you just wanted to be alongside with them more, knowing that life will continue for them with new challenges.

      The Promise - Aang and his friends (except for Zuko) stop a new 100 year war after Earth King wants his colonies back. At first Zuko agrees but after 5 assassination attempts and a few meetings, he then disagrees. Aang is forced by Zuko to make a promise saying Aang will kill Zuko if he becomes cruel leader. Aang asks Roku for advice and Roku says that Aang should kill Zuko. Aang disagrees and says goodbye to Roku as Aang cries and destroys his connection to Roku (purposefully). Zuko visits his father since he has no idea what to do which causes him and Mai to break up.
      The Search - Zuko frees Azula to find their mother. They eventually find their mother with the Gaang but she has taken a new face. A spirit called The Mother of Faces (who is Koh's mother) changes Ursa's face and deletes her memories. Zuko finds her and asks the mother of faces to turn Ursa back into who she previously was. Azula runs off
      The Rift - Toph is reunited with her father although her father is pissed since he thinks she is unappreciated. Later, Toph, Katara, a few others, and Toph's father get stuck in a mine and the mine collapse. Toph carries the entire mine for a long period of time. Eventually Aang and Toph's new metalbending students save her. Aang sees visions of Avatar Yangchen. Aang then talks to Yanchen and she explains that a powerful spirit called Old Iron is coming to exterminate the human kind. Aang fights this spirit to a stalemate. Toph talks to her father because her father thinks she is weak. Toph then resolves her quarrel with her father then helps Aang defeat Old Iron. Old Iron and Aang's fight comes to an end with Aang talking to Old Iron and asking for peace. Old Iron ignores him and decides to destroy humankind anyways so Aang "kills" him. After, he talks to Yangchen and reunites with Roku.
      Smoke and Shadow - Zuko and his family are coming home. His family consists of Ursa (his mother) Kiyi, (his new half sister) and Ikem (his mother's former lover who is now Ursa's husband). On the way back, Zuko is attacked by a group that wants Ozai back in power. He fights them off and uses a really cool fire vortex featuring purple and green flames. He returns and finds out that little children have been getting kidnapped. He finds out that the people kidnapping the kids are Azula and her friends. Azula dresses up as fake spirits and kidnapps Kiyi. Mai and her new boyfriend, Kei Lo help Zuko with the conflict. Eventually they turn to Aang. Zuko and Azula fight multiple times and Azula learns lightning redirection. The fight one last time and Azula wins. Aang finds the kidnapped kids and it is revealed that Azula is no longer insane. Azula kidnapped the children to force Zuko to become a ruthless ruler. He proves her wrong by apologizing to the entire nation.
      North and South - The GAang except for Zuko and Suki are in the south pole. They meet Hakoda who has plans to improve the south pole. Hakoda has a new love interest who is part of the Northern tribe. They plan to rebuild the city but a rebellion starts. a man named Galik (im not sure if that's the right spelling) starts a rebellion. Sokka calls upon Zuko and the EArth King. They talk it out in a meeting but are interrupted by Galik. Galik kidnapps the earth king and they are forced to rescue him. While rescuing the earth king, they must go to a bridge and trade the earth king for Hakoda. On the rope bridge, Galik cuts off one end of the bridge which sends Hakoda and the earth king + some others like Hakoda's love interest falling to their deaths. They are holding on to the bridge, Zuko and Katara work together to save the two. Zuko uses jet propulsion and KAtara uses an ice ladder. Galik dies trying to kill Hakoda as he was being saved.
      Imbalance - The Gaang except for Zuko is at cranefish town ( which will later become the United Republic) They meet multiple extremists who believe that bending is superior to nonbending. Toph meets an earthbender interested in metalbending called Yaling. During their conversation, Toph reveals that she tried to teach Aang metalbending, but he couldn't do it. Yaling is a spy for the criminal mastermind liling. Liling has an army of chi blockers. Aang and his gaang eventually find out. Toph fights Yaling and Toph loses. Sokka saves her. Aang defeats Liling and goes into Avatar State to remove her bending. However, katara tells him not to
      Turf Wars- A new criminal called Tokuga appears and takes control of the gaangs in Republic City. Korra and Asami are in the spirit world. They return home to tell Korra's parents that they are together. Korra's parents are supportive but they worry since the city may not have the same supportive reaction. This causes Korra to storm off. Back to Republic City, the president promises that people will return back to their homes (that were destroyed by the new spirit portal). They try to take back the land but the airbenders stop them. After a few more days, there is a riot at the spirit portal. Tokuga attacks and the spirits defend the portal. Tokuga fuses with a spirit and gains super strength. He retreats because of his hideous new form. Asami is then kidnapped and Tokuga threatens Korra using Asami as leverage. Eventually Korra fights Tokuga to save Asami but his new spirit powers proved to be too strong. However, ASami will surprise attack Tokuga. Meanwhile, Zhu li runs for president and is elected. She fights Raiko for president and wins. She stops everything going on about how Raiko wants to take back the spirit portal land.
      Turf wars- Kuvira has surrendered. Her army hears and one general doesn't want that to happen. They start brainwashing people and when an election comes to elect an earthkingdom leader, Suyin refuses to cooperate. Korra finds Toph and Toph agrees to run against the General. However, the general captures many civilians including Mako, Bolin, and Asami. He brain washes all of them. Toph loses the election. Kuvira reunites with Bataar, who isn't so thrilled to see her. Kuvira goes to fight the general but she can't take on the General's full forces. Kuvira asks a hesitant Bataar to help develop technology to counteract the brainwashing. They find the technology and Korra manages to save everyone who was brainwashed. The general is imprisoned.

      After season 1, how many fights did she lose when she wasn't handicapped? Villains went out of their way to avoid fighting her directly while she was at full power.
      Even against Vatu and then Unavatu, she was dominating those fights until someone she was relying on dropped the ball. When she was about to seal Vatu, the boys let Unalaq through the portal and he attacked her from behind and fused with Vatu. Against the Dark Avatar, she dominated that fight completely until Raava inexplicably allowed herself to be sucked out of Korra by Vatu. Raava didn't even fight back for some reason. Then Korra went 1 on 1 against Unavatu on her own, without Raava, and was able to hold her own. I repeat, she went up against the most powerful being in the universe without Raava empowering her and was able to hold her own.
      Zaheer never fought her while she was at full power. In their first encounter, he drugged her while she was still in her bed. Second time her arms and legs were shackled and she was still able to fight back. Third time, when Zaheer was at his most powerful, she was poisoned with Mercury and she nearly destroyed him before the poison finally took her out.
      Every time she went against Kuvira and most of her opponents in Season 4 she was still poisoned and was also suffering PTSD. The second she got better she took down Kuvira and energybent the equivalent of a nuke.
      Her real challenges and her actual loses came in the politics and international relations department, but that's just how it generally goes for kids that get involved in politics. The Avatar power-up wasn't made for that. Politics is the arena most Avatars would regularly lose in as well because it really shouldn't be their job. Avatars are normal people with access to cataclysmic levels of powers and abilities. They really shouldn't be getting involved in politics except to prevent massacres. Basically, an Avatar should be that world's version of MAD.

She was raised behind walls as the avatar. It was always duty, train, you will change the world. Of course as a cocky person who was only in the training goes into the real world is gunna get knocked down. Especially if you’re training them for past threats lol. Korra was overconfident and needed to be humbled throughout the seasons. Also you guys said about how Korra was at the start then she became more like Aang at the end and yet you guys don't see the point that Kuvira was basically past Korra, overconfident, headstrong, believed her way was right, do anything to get the job done... well obviously Korra wouldn't go to the extremes Kuvira did but think of it this way Korra had all elements and Avatar state Kuvira got a mech to compensate, thats why Korra said she sees herself in her. One more thing the KorrAsami thing was intentionally ambiguous because having openly gay characters was not widely accept during the airing of this show.
    You guys probably won't see this but hopefully someone else explains it to you. Was fun watching you guys react to Korra getting her ass beat lol.

      There's a lot that is understated in this show; Kuvira was an orphan who desperately wanted structure. Su was only able to figure out her life on her own, so she trusted Kuvira (and later, the Earth Kingdom) to be able to do the same, not understanding that without guidance Kuvira's headstrong nature became destructive. Korra had the same nature, but had a ton of guidance that helped her grow to where she was, which is exactly what she needed even though she didn't particularly want it.

      i could have done without the ass beating part and just had her meet the fire sages in some way that ties the plot together. like her scene when she was meditating in the box when she was kidnapped by amon was a really dope scene, got some lore dropping, lots of exposition, and it was her first spiritual breakthrough, and it illustrated she was learning to panic less, and she was in a position where she had no choice but to reflect. wish more mystical avatar stuff like that happened to her.

    Korra and Asami didn’t kiss because gay marriage was illegal in some countries the show aired in. It was left out of the show and they only had the romantic hand holding.
    In the books, Turf Wars Part 1, the two kiss, come out to each other, come out to Korra’s parents, and later come out to their friends.
    Aang and Katara’s daughter, Kya, came out as bisexual. Aang was very supportive of her as the Air Nomads were very progressive in love.
    Avatar Kyoshi was also revealed to be bisexual in the LoK comics and the Kyoshi Saga/Chronicles of the Avatar. She had a girlfriend but also had interests in men; she also had a daughter.

      I agree 100%. Obviously for Aang’s age, his journey and feats were impressive, but so is Korra’s. For 3 books she was 17/18 and only now she’s 21 after a time skip. I feel like people tend to dumb down on Korra’s losses as if she lost a game like tic tac toe. First we got Amon who felt the need to take her bending away, then Unavaatu that unexpectedly took Raava out of her, Zaheer having to poison her while she was in platinum chains, and finally Kuvira forcing Korra into their first fight while knowing she was rusty. Like these are some heavy stuff along the lines of when Aang got killed in the avatar state by Azula. And I get that Ozai was powerful, but the most he had when it comes to aces up his sleeve was him seeing Aang as a child and noticing how Aang didn’t want to kill him.

Amon was already an enemy to Republic City before Korra even left the South Pole. which is why Tenzin had to go back within the very first episode and couldn’t stay with her to teach her airbending. For getting her bending taken away, Korra mainly furthered her plan with Mako in the finale because of the truth about Amon. Also with Tenzin and the kids being captured. In season 2, Unalaq manipulated her as her uncle, chief of both tribes, and spiritual mentor. Adding to the biggest opening of this manipulation of finding out Tenzin and Tonraq lied (which Tonraq himself even felt guilty about considering it was for 13 years) about her isolation. For having Raava taken from Korra, nobody saw that coming unless u were one of the writers. Similar to how people didn’t know Aang was gonna die by being struck by Azula. And it's not like the spirit world is heavily populated with "evil" spirits. Like unalaq said, there really isn't an evil spirit. There are dark spirits which are imbalanced by Vaatu (or darkness). Even Koh isn't truly evil, he stole Kuruk's fiance because he was arrogant (giving him such much needed humble pie), and helped Aang on his journey to be the Avatar, even though a previous incarnation nearly killed him. And for the most part the spirits only seem territorial over the spirit world and the vines, so we can easily assume since the three years that there is some sort of "environmental" protection (we see that the airbenders give tours so they may be protected by the airbenders) to make sure none of the spirits turn dark and try to kill anyone.
      Unavaatu's death caused a lot of spirit vines to pop up, so that's as inevitable. Korra's decision to keep the portals open increased their growth. But these same vines were already present in the Foggy Swamp attached to the Banyan Grove tree that Toph lived in. That's where Kuvira got all of the vines she needed for her weapon, so it didn't really matter if Korra had closed the portals or not. Unavaatu's death vines would still be around, though not as big, but still enough for Varrick to tinker with and for Kuvira to substitute it with the swamp vines.
      The spirit portal was the byproduct of stopping a weapon that was draining all the spirit energy out of the vines in republic city. Had Korra not done what she did, the city would've been completely destroyed and no one would've been able to go there for a while since there's an active spirit cannon blasting off every direction.
      And Kuvira got real power by steeping up to lead the Earth Kingdom when no one else would. Even without a mech, she had the largest, most heavily populated nation behind her.

Also the Avatar whose wife he killed was not arrogant, he was just a "go with the flow" kind of guy. That's literally how we described himself. Also why did the earth Kingdom need a new ruler? If you look back throughout the series they actually did hint to their relationship multiple times but of course it wasn’t as noticeable or prominent because we have to remember this series was aired years ago when same sex relationships were still frowned upon on television especially on Nickelodeon. Regarding Korra being a “weak” Avatar, all I have to say is she was more hot headed in the beginning of the series than towards the end of the series and we can’t just ignore all of the trauma she had to go through and the consequences that followed like her PTSD. She may not have been the most efficient and logical Avatar and I like that because it shows that not every Avatar is meant to be perfect, they’re still human at the end of the day that go through human things.

    Korra being so rash and easily caught off guard isn't the problem, it's that (largely but not entirely thanks to the instability of working with fickle Nickelodeon comission executives) the actions of characters were often based on our understanding of their existing personalities, with the solution to problems usually being some Deus ex machina. Whereas it would have been much more satisfying to see characters demonstrate growth and creative problem solving that calls back to earlier struggles and realisations. BTW, regarding the shows setting, I think it was right not to go to the fire nation as it reinforced the firelord's attempts to stay away from all conflict. It made sense to stay in Republic City as, in lieu of more than one remaining Airbender, Aang considered it his legacy. Plus I think you're overlooking the importance of colonies (including Zhao Fu) and the spirit world as locations.

And sure, she got her ass kicked all over the place, but Aang got his ass kicked just as often, especially in the later seasons. And UNLIKE aang, the big bads korra faced regularly were all extremely powerful masters in their own right. It can be argued that by far the most challenging opponents aang faced were Azula and Ozai. Whereas with korra, I'm all but certain every one of the big bads that korra faced could have taken out Azula or Ozai fairly easily. Like I said, korra faced threats no other avatar faced. The stakes in her story were often much higher. Like her preventing the entire world from falling into darkness for ten thousand years, for instance. She freaking tanked and resisted what is essentially the ATLA universal equivalent of a Nuke, AND she defeated an empowered dark avatar with no help from either her past lives OR Ravaa, since she had been destroyed. I 100% support and understand people who hate on season 1 korra, because she was literally written to be a bad character at the start of the show. She was meant to be literally the opposite of Aang in every way. What's baffling is how people can watch korra go through all she went through over 4 seasons and still claim she is a weak, badly written character. Because she is an entirely different person by the end of the show. She's compassionate, patient, level headed. She grew so much as a character because of all those times she failed. If Korra was too strong and won too often, then what conflict would there be? And it would just validate her headstrong approach and other bad tendencies. By power/violence NOT being the solution (and showing it CAN'T be), it opens growth in the areas Aang was already strong in, just like Sheera said. I also like that the end points are NOT just unambiguously "good". This series is more about adapting to change and making the best of it. It's not "have to break a few eggs in ORDER to make an omelet", but rather "if life gives you lemons, make lemonade". Republic City's "changes", spirits and spirit portals, return of airbenders, it's all neutral. In contrast, forcing/wanting things to stay the same is a hinderance.

      THANKYOU people are always saying that Korra is trash because she lost all her fights. But if she won every time the show would be boring. Her growth both physically and spiritually is what should be given. Unfortunately, some people don't see this and it is so infuriating.

      @@HiDefRonin (I just saw this )Yes but the purpose of her losing those fights was to learn restraint and discipline. Her PTSD was the result of her not taking time to understand everything that happened /why it happened /and what could have happened. I'm not saying that her hotheadedness went away forever completely as seen in turf wars (after she comes out to her dad and she takes what he said the wrong way.)But when you look at how she responds to problems in season 4compared to season 1 you can tell she's matured a ton. And although she may have been folded a lot the fights were still really good. She stopped someone who could literally take peoples bending, guided the world to a new era when she kept the spirit portals open, and allowed them to interact/stopped the red lotus and brought back the air nation, and stopped a fascist dictator who really was what Korra could have become if she didn't learn from everything that happened to her throughout season 1-4.

      One analogy that relates to the last point I made about Kuvira and Korra is that aang was a human who had to learn to be an avatar while Korra was an avatar who needed to learn how to be a human. Kuvira got so caught up with her goal to the point where she lost empathy and could mercilessly kill tons of people. If Korra wanted to she could do the same but she knew that was not the right thing to do.This also applies with kyoshi.

  • @kipperly
    @kipperly 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Korra’s character arc really mirrors Zuko’s more so than Aang’s. She does battle with herself, and act before thinking in order to meet some greater purpose assigned to her, and had to find herself before she could responsibly lead.

  • @InevitableVitare
    @InevitableVitare 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    "Korra keeps getting beat up"... I mean... Amon is one of the most dangerous benders who's ever lived, Vaatu is the closest thing this world has to a god and the Red Lotus are stated to be a match for any Bender, and unstoppable together. The calibre of her villains is on another level to Aang's.
    Also, you can't blame Korra for blowing up the city: If she hadn't bent the beam the gun would have destroyed everything anyway.

    Roshi Idk if ur ever gon see this but im a small music producer trying to spread my sound with the world. Honestly during the pandemic I have found myself lost and lacking in motivation of doing anything. I struggled to find joy and happiness in life. At the same time I began watching old childhood shows to think back to them good old times and for one I started watching Avatar again.
    I remember watching the show back when I was 7 and being like damn this so underrated crazy how it took another 15 years before it would pop off again. After finishing that and Korra I wasn't satisfied with the show and around that time I started looking for reaction videos, which is where I found ur videos. Honestly I watch too many reactions on Avatar, but out of all them u guys were the ones I stayed for. Like bruh your reactions made us old fans happy that someone was appreciating this show like how we did.
    Sheera with her mind predicting connections, Lupa being goofy all the time and Roshi hyping up the squad. Like you guys would laugh at the parts that were funny, get hype over the battle scenes, figure the message of the episodes and overall ur reaction reminded me about watching that show for the first time. I mean like shit I watched over hundreds of Avatar and Korra episodes and right now I'm on the last one like man Imma miss this for real. I just wanted to let you know that the reactions you have done makes us fans love the show for eternality. Idk if imma stay watching this channel but I hope for the best for your channel in the future bless up brother!
