That’s better to says - how lucky we are too had met him and saw and heard his music message and messages in music - We ain’t lost him. He’s gone for a brand new place for an amazing new planet, man🚀
Dear Chick Corea, I was a young boy at the age of 15 when I tirst heard this piece on" light as a feather". This music touched me immediately and so I started to buy many of your records. My love to Jazz has allready started and the adventure is still going on! At the age of 48 I started playing piano(much to late!!) and now I`m 54 and started playing "Spain" in an easy version. But I am very abmitious to play it (nearly!) as you do! My teacher says it would be possible, if I work hard. And I will do so!! Thank you for your music, it has changed my life in a beautiful way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! kind regards Theo
Damn, 6 years and at the best you could play an easy version? Guess this song must be some kind of difficulty that i cant even coincive....i wish you will play this piece! Best luck my friend!
@@mlggodzilla1567 I've been playing for about a year and I'm about halfway in after maybe 14 hours of practise in total. I don't play it like chick though, needless to say
@@Mrissecool yeah me too, i had some problems with the rhythm but now i can do the main part without problems, it was all about practice, maybe i should make a video.
just yesterday I was watching this video without knowing that one of the most important musicians in history had died. I have never experienced such an important death in my life as a musician, and now that he is not among us, the world is falling on me. This world will no longer be the same without him
I was very high one night during my college days. I'd smoked some strong weed that made me very high, but gave me an exaggerated sense of awareness. I was alone all night, listening to a number of Chick's piano masterpieces, including his seminal album "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs". The music sounded magnitudes beyond angular and supremely atonal. Many notes were out of place and out of tune, yet the music was blowing my mind. That night, I fully grasped Chick's genius and how deeply Thelonious Monk had influenced him. Said influence can be appreciated in spades in his second and third improvisations of this video. My favorite musician, and I shall play with you in paradise!
I've always marveled at the level of peculiar dexterity in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th fingers of Chick's right hand. Never seen anything quite like it. Respect and RIP.
I've posted many comments expressing my grief at the loss of this musical genius leprechaun. I'm tired of the grief. I just want to bask in the joy that he shared when he played with his band. Look at the many youtube videos of him playing live. There's always a moment when he looks at the guys, and smiles. That is the joy of Chick. Thank you for creating the music magic, the complex bebop rhythm's of our life. RIP Maestro.
What a beautiful gift for us! Your virtuosity is overwhelming and hypnotic! Something I must share: I've been a disciple of your music through the decades. When my son was 7 years old, I was playing an Elektric Band CD in the car and when he heard Charged Particles, he became obsessed with it and your music! It was an amazing, life-changing moment! On 8/12/17, we went to Detroit (he from Orlando and I from Columbus, OH) to see you in concert. It was his present to me for my 69th birthday. When you opened the show with Charged Particles, it was indeed a very special, cosmic moment for us! Thank you for the continuum of astounding compositions and performances you continue to bestow on humanity! You are truly an anointed maestro and a beautiful human! God Bless always!
The days we live in.. you can not only see and hear in great detail what this great master is playing, But he also shares a lot of beautiful insights of his playing. There is no excuse to not evolve incredibly fast as a musician with all this benefits..we only need perseverance and, taking things from easy to this and beyond. I am closely to intermediate keyboard player but this still looks kind of hard to get my head around it. so i will save this 'lesson' and get back to it after i get better a understanding of the language and the voicings.
Man oh man! Talk about talent? I've been playing for 4 decades. His effortless mastery and style is without peer. The fact that he's doing an overhead tutorial is incredible. Thanks a bunch chick!
What we're looking at is a master pianist, especially during the second phase of his video, showing us mere mortals (slowed down a lot) how this song was chord & melodically constructed. There are lots of budding pianists who may have hear the tune, but need a 'visual' blow-by-blow as to how to follow. Chick is a master of innovative "Jazz". Therefore, those who are interested in this (relatively) complex piece, should point their eyes forwards.
Today is a sad day in our music world. The legend has transcended to another realm where he returns to forever... but the legend’s legacy will never end.
I love how the original spain is kind of dramatic and deep and Chick's version makes people clap together whenever they hear the solo. Amazing work! Hope I can play it eventually!
"Friendly" is a synonym for "genial" not a translation or meaning thereof. "Genial" translates as "characterized by genius", among other possible translations, hence a non-native English speaker Samir got it just right.
I can't believe you're gone, Mr Corea. I can't believe you won't play again for us. Thank you for sharing your knowledge here while you could. I'll never forget your concert at La Défense, Paris, in the early summer of 2012.
Not sure about "correctly" - he is more doing a theme and variations, no two versions the same. New real book has the original version, this is the master reinterpreting his own masterpiece.

It's such a double-edged thing. It is so, so beautiful, but it makes you instantly give up trying. I find the acoustic piano version of Spain my favorite (esp. Akoustic Band).
Rest In Peace to a musical genius who completely changed the way I look at music, both as a listener and piano player myself. I’ve always had a deep appreciation and admiration for Chick Corea. His music has accompanied many of the best days I’ve had, as well as some of the worst nights. I will never forget hearing this Spain for the first time. Something about the environment and color that his chord and voice selection made just hit me right in the face. His talents were otherworldly and I will forever appreciate the chance to hear this man’s music. Thank you Chick, may you Rest In Peace.
After finding out of his passing, this is the first song that came to mind and that last phrase @8:34 is what I heard. Thank you for all the compositions which opened the door to higher places.
One chord melts into the other just so beautiful. A real classic! Thanks Chick for showing every detail, how to harmonize and work out the rhythmic aspect!!
Thank you. I have a lead sheet for Spain sitting beside me on my bench and a Slow Downer app. I’ve been working on those breaks and chords for months. This video is a great gift. All the best to you.
If any artist who made such a piece like this is reading this comment, model Mr Corea's kindness, this content is a major contribution in the quality of learning of everyone
Wonderful to see his fingers instead of his face when he is playing his music. I would really like to hear him explain his thinking behind his playing. His harmonic and melodic concepts combined with classical technique makes him an absolut master musician and pianist. What is so refreshing about his playing is that he is not a lick player like so many. He can play this song a thousand times, and every time his solo would be completely different; different motives, lines and shapes, different rhythms. And still, it will always sound like Chick. still, there are explainable concepts behind his playing. If he would only share them with us. All we can do is analyze his music and guess. Which is a good start of course.
Having watched people like this for decades and studied on my own as much as having a full time job allows…..I have concluded that they are just much more talented and intelligent than me 😊. These guys could do amazing stuff at 10 years old. Sure they learn harmony and practice a lot but they’ve just got some innate ability that allows them to master the keyboard (or whatever instrument) in a particular way.
@@roddykennedy9476 Agreed, except that I wouldn't necessarily assume that a talented person is also an intelligent person. And as talented as Chick obviously was, he was also a very hard worker, and was the sun of a jazz musician who had connections to some of the best musicians at the time. So, just being talented may not lead to brilliancy as it did with Chick. I would have given my last shirt for the opportunity to take a lesson with him!

These reharmonizations are simply genial! Thank you, Mr. Corea, for unselfishly sharing this treasure with us.
The word "genial" means "friendly." However, I've never heard of friendly reharmonizations. Perhaps you meant "genius."
or he may have just used the german or french term for genius, which is genial/génial
Exactly what I meant. Thank you. In my Bosnian language, ''genijalno'' means ''genius''.
