Absolutely! I love how people try to find modern expressions of shanties and similarly vocally oriented songs, incl. The Longest Johns and Nathan Evans. But David Coffin is extraordinary in all these songs, really expressing their core often through just his own voice... Very impressive! :)

This song holds a special place in my heart. I work in forestry in central Ohio. We have rare Burr Oak, Blue Ash and Washington Hawthorn. I sing this song every time I call the birds to come eat.

Every version of this song I’ve heard gives it a totally different feeling. The Longest Johns sounds like a pirate party in a tavern, Peter Bellamy’s sounds like a bunch of mournful ghosts in a graveyard waiting for “judgement tide”, and this one makes me think of a powerful tree spirit singing proudly of his home.

      Something else funny
In the Anglo Saxon futhorc rumes (old English runes, ᚠᚢᚦᚩᚱᚳ) a bunch of the runes are named after/signify trees
Including of course, Oak ᚪ, and ash ᚫ, ᚪᚾᛞ ᚦᚩᚱᚾ᛫

Spectacular! I’m posting this for when I listen to this another million times!
Of all the trees that grow so fair, old England to adorn
Greater are none beneath the sun, than Oak & Ash & Thorn!
Sing! Oak & Ash & Thorn, good sirs
    All of a Midsummer’s morn
Surely we sing, of no little thing
In Oak & Ash & Thorn!
Oak of the Clay lived many a day,
    Or ever Aeneas began
Ash of the Loam was a lady at home,
When Brut was an outlaw man
Thorn of the Down saw New Troy Town
    From which was London born
    Witness hereby the ancientry
Of Oak and Ash and Thorn!
Sing! Oak & Ash & Thorn, good sirs
    All of a midsummer’s morn
Surely we sing, of no little thing
In Oak & Ash & Thorn!
Yew that is old in churchyard mould,
    He breedeth a mighty bow
Alder for shoes do wise men choose,
    And beech for cups also
But when ye have killed, and your bowl is spilled,
    Your shoes are clean outworn,
Back you must speed for all that you need,
To Oak and Ash and Thorn!
Sing! Oak & Ash & Thorn, good sirs
    All of a midsummer’s morn
Surely we sing, of no little thing
In Oak & Ash & Thorn!
Ellum she hateth mankind, and waiteth
    Till every gust be laid,
To drop a limb on the head of him
    That anyway trusts her shade
But whether a lad be sober or sad,
Or mellow with ale from the horn,
He'll take no wrong when he lieth along
'Neath Oak and Ash and Thorn!
Sing! Oak & Ash & Thorn, good sirs
    All of a midsummer’s morn
Surely we sing, of no little thing
In Oak & Ash & Thorn!
Oh, do not tell the Priest our plight,
Or he would call it a sin
But we have been out in the woods all night,
    A-conjuring Summer in
And we bring you news by word of mouth
Good news for cattle and corn
Now is the Sun come up from the South,
With Oak and Ash and Thorn!
Sing! Oak & Ash & Thorn, good sirs
    All of a midsummer’s morn
Surely we sing, of no little thing
In Oak & Ash & Thorn!
Sing Oak and Ash and Thorn, good Sirs
    All of a Midsummer's morn
England shall bide till Judgement Tide,
By Oak and Ash and Thorn!

I just found out you had a account on here after listening to your great songs for so many years! I’d absolutely love to hear you live! Your are a huge inspiration for me I started singing in little town places- all sea shanties- most of them you have sung- the Bonnie ship the diamond, the dreadnought. And then some from Ewan Maccoll.
