A Grail among Grails; Michael May Knives Sheffield, Ettrick in Bog Oak!!

  • Salutations, Ladies and Gentlemen! Today, I'll be discussing an absolute 'Grail-knife' of mine; the Michael May Ettrick Wharncliffe in beautiful Bog Oak!
    It's no surprise that this Grail is made in Sheffield, and an Ettrick at that! I have fully accepted that I am a hopeless addict when it comes to these knives...not that I mind!
    This particularly exquisite piece features a C70 carbon steel Wharncliffe blade, unlike my other Ettrick from Mr. May, which featured a Peach-pruner blade. The bolsters, pins and liners are all brass and the handles are fashioned from gorgeous 5000 year-old Bog Oak. Everything aside from the blade is polished to a glossy finish. The spring has a nice level of tension (5) and features Michael's signature, elegant filework. The overall craftsmanship is excellent, in my eyes. There are certainly things I could complain about, but when it comes to a beautifully functional, artistically made knife, I can't be too nitpicky, particularly at this price, as £82 is extremely reasonable for a custom, handmade knife!
    All in all, I adore this piece more than I can express. Yes, the fit-n'-finish isn't quite on par with many $500+ custom knives, but for it's cost, I am still incredibly pleased with it. The style of this knife is timeless and it's aesthetic is unmatched. I am speaking with substantial bias, as I adore Sheffield made knives, Ettricks, specifically. Even so, I'd still happily recommend a Michael May Knife to those who desire a handsome, custom, (handmade) traditional knife at a fair price.
    And I won't take back what I said...this knife IS sexy!

    Michael can make a good knife. I have a few of his names including a couple of Ettricks. Mine have all been as close to perfect as you’re ever likely to see. I do like the brass double bolsters.

      You prompted me to get an Ettrick Pruner from Michael. I recall yours being really well made!
      You and me both, when it comes to brass, it feels so refreshingly different.
      Cheers as always!

    You really have a thing about Bog Oak don't you? It is a beautiful material. You just need some Stag Ettricks now.
    I'm glad you mentioned natural materials shrinking and swelling with atmospheric moisture. People should be aware that, particularly in modern centrally heated homes, this can cause cracking. Please do not store your knives anywhere that is too hot and dry. You need some humidity!

      @TheKnifeRaven  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I sure do have a thing for it! And yes, Stag is likely my next target.
      I never have to deal with cracks, but granted, I always keep my knives oiled before storage. (Handles included) It tends to keep them in good condition.
      Cheers, as always!

    Congratulations on getting the grail knife, bog oak is very interesting to work with I worked in a Craft Shop doing wood turning so know how nice it is. I also love Elm and it is great to turn sadly not much around now and Michael May is the only knife maker I have seen using it, others might know differently in which case please shout up, great revue and happy new year to you and your family and Alice of course. 😁

      I don't know of many makers who use Elm, but I'll be sure to share if I do!
      Thanks for the congratulations!

    Firstly, I've just found this video by chance,, ,, no idea why it didn't
    "pop up", like all your other videos, 🤔
    Anyway,, hope your bog oak doesn't shrink like on my Ergonomic,,, I've still got to get round to fixing it,,
    Also, I found the edge was a fairly basic belt ground finish, which I did fix, and is now beautiful..
    Sadly, due to the very poor communication skills of Mr May, I won't be buying any more of his knives..
    All the best,, John

      No worries! Sometimes TH-cam's notifications are erratic.
      So far, the handles have been okay, but who knows if that'll change?
      I'll give the edge a touch-up, hopefully that will help.
      It's unfortunate that your experience with Michael wasn't the best. I've encountered similar problems, but maybe I'm willing to overlook them as I like his knives so much! 😅
      Cheers, as always!

    I liked the way you spoke of imperfection but being perfect to you. Brilliant mate and could totally relate.
    Lining the Ettrick collection up...😮brilliant😮.
    What do you use on your wood covers? Because your olive wood Ettrick looks fantastic 👌.
    Cheers mate

      I use either camellia blade oil, or plain mineral oil on all my wooden handles. No beeswax or fancy polish. Just oil. Surprisingly, the knives look great, as well as being kept in prime condition!
      My colllection of Ettricks is getting a bit ridiculous...not that I mind! I'm aiming for Stag as my next material, sometime this year, I hope.
      Cheers, as always!

    Pleased for you getting your grail knife 🙏🏻
    Bog oak is a fantastic material and looks stunning.
    Great line up of Ettric’s… is this a pattern that you carry and use?
    Thanks brother, 😎🙏🏻

      Hey, Sean! Thanks a bunch!
      I adore Bog Oak, and I'm convinced Michael's is the nicest.
      I love Ettricks, enough to both collect *and* carry them...they're shockingly useful!

    What is the weight difference between this and the Arthur Wright Ettricks?

    • @TheKnifeRaven
      @TheKnifeRaven  28 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The exact weight, I sadly don't know. But I can say with certainty that the Arthur Wright models are lighter, due to the smaller, singular bolster.
      Sorry I couldn't be more of a help!
      Cheers!

      @GurtTarctor 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@TheKnifeRaven Thanks. Is the balance point different? It seems like it might be back-heavy but maybe it's about the same as the A. Wright?

    • @TheKnifeRaven
      @TheKnifeRaven  28 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@GurtTarctor You are correct regarding the balance. The M. May is a bit back heavy. Not uncomfortable, exactly, but it is something worth noting.
      Cheers!

      @@TheKnifeRaven Good to know, thanks again. I wish more manufacturers tried the Ettrick pattern, one day I'll order a really nice custom one I think.
