  • The starter motor of a Honda CB 750 RC42 did not turn sometimes. When hitting the start button the relais clicked but the starter did nothing. Hitting it with a hammer sometimes helped but not always. So we took the starter motor out and before buying a new one I wanted to find out if its possible to repair. My thought was that the brushs were worn out and usually you can easily replace these parts. To dismantle it we take the 2 long screws out and pull the 3 main parts apart. On one sind we find a gearbox and on the other side sits the plate with 2 brushes. After 70.000 Kilometers on the bike and MANY starts the starter is really dirty inside. We clean the gear parts and the electric side and mount a new brush plate.

Awesome, I'm going to rebuild my starter this evening, for a 1987 Honda TRX 125 all terrain vehicle. Mine has four brushes instead of two, and it doesn't have the gear reduction that yours has. My brushes have split into pieces, and I got the new parts in the mail today. Thanks.

A very useful video. Can you please tell me, which parts will be at fault if you have a lazy starter?

Best buy a service kit for your starter or a new one

How did you buy that specific part inside the starter motor? Is it a generic part? I'm assuming you can't buy that from the Honda Dealership as they'd want to sell you the whole starter motor.

I bought it on eBay and it's a original Honda part

You get the starter part number, and then find a starter alternator repair shop, or go online with your part number and find a starter brush plate rebuild kit

He did not show us if it indeed worked (??) ;;)
What did you use to clean the inside of the starter? WD40?

What is the part you replaced called? Or key words you used to find it?
I have a bad 1985 gl1200 starter motor I haven’t cracked open yet but will be hoping this is the problem

German word is "kohlebürsten" translated brushes. Maybe that's the key word.

With reversed polarity it does spin backwards

@@LordPenny95 You probably connected the starter relay (it connects the starter switch to the battery) backwards. It is usually found under the seat.
