  • Got a stored motorcycle that won't start? Or even scarier - thinking of buying one? Here is how to get it back on the road. I will be using a 2009 Honda Rebel 250 as an example, the bike sat for too long and it doesn't start, lets start it together.

Wont start after sitting? Almost always a gummed up carburetor. I believe you could have just cleaned the carb and it would have started. All the other steps were nice, but unneeded. Original battery sounded fine, air filter looked fine, sparks looked fine and the gas just needed to be replaced with fresh gas as the Seafoam. The ports on these small carbs are so tiny, any dried gas goop will significantly change the carburation. This is why we all love fuel injection :)

I just bought my first bike, a Rebel 250.
It's been working and I had it checked out by a mechanic to make sire it was good.
He adjusted the idle to give it less RPMs because the previous owner had set it too high and the mechanic said it wasn't as good for the bike that way.
It took some getting used to but I'm fine with it.
Anyway, watching videos it looks like I've been choking it backwards to start up. I start with the choke all the down and then move it up to start and then back down to ride, which looks backwards.
Today I wanted to try it the way people do it in the videos so moved it down all the way and then moved it back to the top.
As soon as I got onto the road it stalled even though I gave it plenty of throttle. Then it wouldn't start again.
I trued every choke position, starting in neutral, even putting it on reserve tank just in case, everything I could think of.
Any thoughts? I'm still new at this but it ran fine yesterday.

Thank you so much . But you engine sounds great but doesn’t start . I just bought a bike today it started up kinda right away but when I stopped to get gas it rattled alot . I had to let it set before it started. The rattle sounded like it came from the transmission???

You're using a single PZ26 piston carburetor with a manifold. What main jet and pilot jet do you recommend using? It's a 1986 model.

Hey man, when you said checking if the fuel is on, it was pointing downwards, isnt that the reserve?
I just got a Honda Rebel 1999 and I'm having difficulties figuring out how to make it run smoothly, as it has a shock/jump starter (i dont know how it's called, it's on the left handle, you were adjusting it after you started the bike in this video).
Could you make a small video explaining how it works and how is the bike supposed to be used?
Edit: it's called choke. Problem with mine is that the motorcycle will turn off after turning the choke off even if it was on for 2+ minutes. Any ideas what the cause could be?

My father has a 2009 Honda rebel with about 250 miles on it he’s the original owner bought it and never got his MC license got pulled over by police while nine yards never used it and it’s been sitting in my garage ever since would it be best to just replace the carb?? Fuel tank is also rusted but bike and all looks brand spanking new I wash it every year around summer time and have preserved it for years. I’m just wondering what’s the best way to go because I took it to a bike shop they told me I needed a whole new gas tank and that it’s around $2k for a new one and it’s not worth fixing it that they’d take it off my hands for $500 I said no and took it home. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you ever put fuel in the spark plugs whole to make it start

You really shouldn't. Too much can damage rings and cylinder wall and even cause a hydraulic lock up.

it means your carburator is overflowing with gas so the only way out is from the overflow tube, which is the one underneath. Chanves are the float valve stuck, or a faulty float needle valve. Its happening to mine too

Hi bro, my bike started but wouldn't stay at idle. Got off the carb, cleaned it (lot of gunk), adjusted the fuel screw, and then it stayed ok at idle.
Few days later and it didn't wanna start, spark plugs were very black, so my guess is it was too rich, and it drowned in fuel. Any idea?

    • @NYDStories
      @NYDStories  ปีที่แล้ว

My guess would be it got dirty from the fuel, thats why most guys recommend cleaning the fuel tank:fuel lines to avoid getting the carb clogged right after cleaning.

@@NYDStories I already cleaned the tank with ethanol, drained it, and put new fuel filter before reinstalling the carb. Could be a vacuum leak tho, I miss one necklace from one of the air intake boots and it might take more air

This is too obvious tips if you cant figure them out by yourself u shouldn't touch your motorcycle at all... i got one tip that is not so obvious for everyone, if your motorcycle wont start, backfire through carbs, pops a lot, your pistons stop or even reverse when cranking. Your timing is bad because of bad wiring in ignition coils. Check your ignition coils wiring, you probably switched them accidently is what i did.
